Karyn on mission to develop Tobago football.
By Kareece Nelson (Newsday).

Senior national women’s footballer Karyn Forbes is back in the seaside village of Plymouth where she is currently preparing for her fourth instalment of the “Kick it with Karyn” football tournament on Saturday.

Forbes, 26, is currently pursuing a Masters in Communications, Management and Counselling at Northwood University in Texas, however she returns home annually to do her part in promoting and developing football on the island.

The event will showcase several matches inclusive of under 12 boys and girls and a open match for men.

In an interview with Newsday, Forbes said, “The aim of this competition is really to give back to the community and also to raise awareness in youth football in Trinidad and Tobago. Every year, I continue to develop the tournament by increasing the scope of the event.

“In the first year of the event, there where only matches for men. In the second year, I introduced women matches, and in the third year I developed on those matches. This year, the under 12 boys and girls were introduced to the event. In the future I would like to establish my own league on the island.”

Forbes, being a national footballer since being a student at Signal Hill Secondary School, said there is a lot of room for the development of football.

She added, “We really don’t have a lot of events aimed at football development in Tobago. It is important to have the youth playing football consistently. There is even a need to improve the infrastructure and the equipment within the sport as it is lacking. I have noticed this within the sport from primary school all the way up to secondary schools.

One of my goals is to help the youth to become recognised not only in Tobago but in Trinidad as well.

This would afford them more opportunities to get on the national team.”

As the teams gear up for Saturday, there is more than bragging rights to be won, as Forbes told Newsday that there is over $10,000 in cash prizes, trophies and medals on offer.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Reduced $$prizes for TFA clubs Saturday.
By Walter Alibey (Guardian).

Stokely Vale FC, winner of the Premier Division of the Tobago Football Association Competition will on Saturday be presented with its earnings of $50,000 for the 2017 season, when the Prizegiving Ceremony takes place at the Fair Field Complex in Bacolet Tobago from 5pm.

The amount was reduced from the original $100,000 due to challenges with gate receipts, reduced allocation from the Tobago House of Assembly (THA), rescheduled matches due to unsuitable playing surfaces, unmarked pitches, waterlogged perimeters, inadequate lighting and non-functioning equipment among others, a release from the TFA stated yesterday.

TFA president Anthony Moore said the reduction in prizes was necessary and was communicated to the clubs.

According to Anthony, "As you are well aware, the 2017 season was envisaged as a year of transition to self-sufficiency for the Tobago Football Association, with proposed record-breaking increases in prize-money to clubs and gate revenue sharing arrangements with Premier Division Clubs." He said his association could not honour its commitment due to the reasons listed above.

"The full impact of the above factors resulted in a prolonged 2017 season and negatively impacted the ability of the TFA to achieve its budgeted gate revenues at our two main paying venues - the Cyd Gray Complex, Roxborough and Mt. Pleasant Recreational Ground," Moore explained.

He noted, "We are currently reviewing our proposed prize structure for 2018 in keeping with the new fiscal reality in Tobago and the intention is to achieve some degree of parity with other Zones in Trinidad."

Moore, a member of the Board of the T&T Football Association, said he was grateful that, in spite of the challenges, his association was able to complete its Premier, 1st Division, Tobago FA, RBL Youth Cup, NLCB Elite Youth, and THA District Games Competitions.

Apart from Stokely Vale, Signal Hill United is also set to walk away with $25,000 from its original $40,000 amount for placing second, while Sidey FC will collect $15,000 for third instead of the initial $20,000 prize.

Meanwhile, in the First Division, FC Goodwood will collect a $20,000 winner's cheque while Moriah Youths and Carnbee Mt Pleasant will receive $12,000 and $8,000 respectively.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Stokely Vale lifts $25,000 TFA crown.
By Nigel Simon (Guardian).

Stefano Wright scored a pair of second-half goals to earn Plymouth-based Stokely Vale FC a 4-2 triumph against FC Goodwood in the Tobago Football Association’s National Lotteries Control Board FA Trophy final at the Mt Pleasant Recreation, Mt Pleasant, last Friday. The tournament’s fairytale team, Goodwood, struck as early as the eighth minute through Mark Agard but then gifted Stokely Vale the equaliser when Clearance Rennie conceded an own-goal in the 29th for both teams to go in 1-1 at the half-time whistle.

Six minutes after the restart, Wright got his first to put his Stokely Vale ahead for the first time but Goodwood soon got back on level terms via Deon Thomas in the 58th minute.

Stokely Vale then took to the front again in the 77th minute thanks to L’Che Edwards and four minutes later Wright got his second to push the lead to 4-2, after which Goodwood struggled to mount another fightback.

With the win, Stokely Vale walked away with $25,000 while Goodwood picked up $12,000 for the second spot.

In the semifinals at the same venue on Tuesday night, Stokely Vale needed a 46th-minute equaliser from Edwards to cancel out Keanuo Brathwaite’s 33rd-minute opener for Carnbee/Mt Pleasant, before eking out a 4-3 penalty-kicks win.

And in the second semifinal, Kursel Vincent banged home a decisive4 74th-minute item to earn FC Goodwood a 2-1 triumph over Sidey’s FC.

Deon Thomas had given FC Goodwood a 1-0 lead in the 47th minute before Pavel Warrick drew Sidey’s level in the 61st, only for Vincent to strike and continue his team’s fairy-tale run. Before the FA final, Sidey’s also won narrowly over Carnbee/Mt Pleasant in the third-place match 3-2.

Brandon Benjamin and Kyle Davidson netted in the 21st and three minutes into time added on at the end of the first-half for Sidey’s to lead 2-0.

Axel George pulled a goal back for Carnbee/Mt Pleasant in the 52nd, only for Pavel Warrick to restore Sidey’s two-goal cushion in the 66th.

But six minutes later, Navelle Roach netted a second for Carnbee/Mt Pleasant to get his team within one goal again at 2-3. In the end, however, Sidey’s held on for the win.

Meanwhile, Belle Garden FC and Carnbee/Mt Pleasant FC registered lopsided wins when matches in the Tobago Football Association Premier Division resumed on Sunday with a double-header at Mt Pleasant.

In the opener, Carnbee/Mt Pleasant FC hammered Lambeau FC 5-0 with a goal each from Darielle Alleyne (11th), Tyrese Sandy (29th), Kareem Agard (31st penalty), Lester Roberts (37th penalty) and Axel George (75th) to improve to 34 points from 19 matches, four adrift of Stokely Vale and Signal Hill.

In the other matchup, Henson Charles banged in six goals in the 29th, 51st, 55th, 66th, 80th and 87th minutes in Belle Garden’s 10-4 blasting of Bethel United.

Christian Job added a pair of goals for Belle Garden (31st & 84th) while Tyreece Taylor (70th) and Dillon Villafana (77th) also netted in the win as they also moved to 34 points, but from 18 matches, into fifth.

Adams double keeps Georgia ahead in TFA
By Nigel Simon (T&T Guardian)

Weah Adams netted a first-half brace to guide Georgia FC over Golden Lane 3-0 to maintain their comfortable lead at the top of the Tobago Football Association Premier Division at Mt Pleasant Recreation Ground on Tuesday.

TFA president Everton Alfred plans to boost football in Tobago
By Joel Bailey (T&T Newsday).

EVERTON Alfred, president of the Tobago Football Association (TFA), plans to boost the game in the island, during his four-year term in office.

Alfred, the former TFA general secretary, and his executive were elected unopposed last Wednesday, at its Annual General Meeting (AGM), which was held virtually.

Desmond Alfred, Carel Percy and Ronald Duke will serve as the TFA’s vice-presidents, but the three ordinary members, as well as a new general secretary, “will be named in due course to complete the Board”, according to a TFA media release.

During an interview on Tuesday, Alfred said, “We have to develop our stakeholders. We need better coaches in the island. We have to focus on development as it pertains to coaches. That will also redound to the development of our players.”

He added, “One of the things we want to focus on is a youth development programme across the island. One central programme that everybody is working with and doing the same thing. We’ll (go) through the ranks, starting from ages six (or) seven, all the way up to 17-19. That’s a programme that we’re going to work on.”

Another area which Alfred and his executive will be looking at is women’s football.

“We also need to expand the women’s game on the island,” he said. “We haven’t grown the women’s arm of the game. While they play at primary school and secondary school, we only have about three clubs on the island. We need to grow the game, even if it redounds to having our own league in Tobago, that will be worked out because the logistics would not permit six and seven clubs to be played in the WoLF (Women’s League Football).”

He continued, “I’m not against WoLF, we have to work with WoLF as well but, given that we’re separated by water, we have to treat with that going forward.”

Financial stability is another aspect which the TFA executive will be paying attention towards.

“It’s no secret, everywhere in football now there is debt, and then you have to depend on somebody for whatever you’re doing,” said Alfred. “So, we have to find a way to market the product of football that we have. The marketing is not just to get sponsorship. We have to market to get spectators to come out, to get parents and children involved in the sport because when this SoE (state of emergency) and lockdown is over, it’s basically like we’re starting over.

“We have to look at how we set those plans. The best players in Tobago didn’t have the opportunities of being exposed to higher competitions, except with a club that is playing in the Super League. All the players can’t play with the (few) clubs because the clubs are community-based.”

Alfred added, “We need to provide opportunities for our players in Tobago to be exposed to a higher level of competition, whether or not it’ll be in the form of a zonal competition or we try to invite teams from Trinidad to come and play against the best players from Tobago, that will provide them with the opportunity for growth and development.

“That will be part of our focus, to try to lift the standard of the game. That is not only for the players (but) for the coaches. If your better coaches are coaching the Tobago teams, it means that they are getting the opportunities to compete against a higher level of competition.”

Tobago has produced a few national women’s players, including the Forbes sisters Karyn and Kimika, as well as Kennya “Yaya” Cordner, but have hardly on the men’s team, except Daniel Cyrus and Kevan George.

Alfred said, “For a Tobago player now who is playing at the club level and trying to jump into the national team, there is no middle-ground. That is why we’re looking at having a Tobago team playing games. You’ll be identified as one of the better players in your club or on the island, and we’ll now put you in the set-up to play for Tobago. Coming out of that, it becomes an easier opportunity for you to get into the national team.”

He also touched on the obstacles faced by Tobago players who travel to Trinidad for national training sessions.

“He’s going to Trinidad, basically on a try-out, in an environment that he’s unfamiliar with,” Alfred said. “Therefore, he tends to be a little bit timid and circumspect in his actions. If we have the Tobago team playing games, therefore the coach can come and see a player in an environment that he’s comfortable with, and he can give off his best.

“You’ll see the (player) in his natural environment. We hope that will redound to the best Tobago players getting the opportunities to showcase themselves at the national levels.”

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Tobago football screening resumes Wednesday.
T&T Newsday Reports.

THE Tobago Football Association will continue screening sessions on Wednesday and Friday, from 4pm to 6pm, to select a men’s team, to participate in a zonal competition hosted by the Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA). The first screening, which attracted 13 players, was held on Sunday at the Dwight Yorke Stadium, Bacolet.

In keeping with the recent sports policy announced by Government, where stadiums are classified as safe zones, only vaccinated players will be allowed entry.

Players are required to have red and white t-shirts along with a red or black shorts.

TFA technical official Harvey Jack said, “Following the final screening session on Friday, 25 players will be shortlisted to continue training, in preparation for the TTFA zonal competition.”

Jack said that all member clubs of the association were informed of the screening sessions.

“The national zonal competition is primarily...with the intention of identifying players with the potential to represent T&T, at senior and under-20 levels.”

National coach Angus Eve said on Monday, all six zones in T&T will be involved in the tournament, which is expected to feature one round of football.

He added, “We are anticipating to start the competition on February 28, but I am having a meeting with the coaches today, to ascertain whether they are comfortable with the intended kick-off date.

“There are no football leagues in Trinidad and Tobago right now, so we are using this window to give the local players an opportunity to train and build some match fitness, before league football commence.

“We are hoping that the local players will get in enough competitive game time, before a national team is selected for the Concacaf Nations League, in June.

Players are required to have red and white t-shirts along with a red or black shorts.

Are players being selected for a NT or for a fashion assignment?

Is there an emphasis on attracting talent or on disincentivizing participation?

Among other things ...

Tobago footballers urged to get vaccinated after low turnout at screening
T&T Newsday

SENIOR Tobago football coach Terry Williams is encouraging Tobago footballers to get vaccinated, as he lamented the turnout at screening sessions ahead of a national zonal competition. The Tobago Football Association (TFA) has held three screening sessions so far at the Dwight Yorke Stadium, Bacolet.

Williams said, “I think more players should consider their safety and take the vaccine. I was looking forward to at least 40 players at the screening sessions, but looking at the numbers, instead of screening, I have to coach.”

Newsday understands that just 13 players showed up for screening, owing to the requirement by the Ministry of Sport that only vaccinated players, coaches and administrators be permitted to participate in domestic sport.

Williams said, “We will have to coach what we have; the vaccination affected a lot of players who are eligible to play.

But we are still going forward. It is an opportunity for the vaccinated players to work harder and showcase their talent.” Williams does not think the Tobago team will be at a disadvantage in the competition, noting other zones will be facing similar issues.

Each zone has to name 25 players and six officials by February 21. Tobago Football Association (TFA) technical official Harvey Jack will manage the Tobago team.

Jack said, “Our team list should be completed by Friday, following two training sessions during the week, which will include the eight players shortlisted for the national under-20 team, along with other under-20 players who did not make the final cut.”

The national zonal competition is set to kick off on February 27.

Williams, the head coach at 1976 FC, will coach the Tobago team.

Ako George of Speyside FC, will be the assistant coach along with Richard Goddard as goalkeeper coach, and Kurt Jack will be the overall co-ordinator.

“There is still an opening for a physio,” Jack said.

Giving his assessment of the screenings, Jack said, “We were expecting some more of the quality players, but apparently they had some challenges. But the process was smooth.”

One official who wished to remain anonymou lamented the low turnout of players. “When I asked about some of the good players who were not present, I was told they were not vaccinated.

“It was disappointing because football is the most played sport in Tobago, and this is a good opportunity for them.”

Jeremiah Bristol, 20, of Canaan and Adiel George, 19, of Calder Hall were part of the screening sessions.

Both players said they are short on fitness and organised match play, but are willing to work hard in the process. Bristol, a central defender with 1976 FC Phoenix, said, “I am not fit right now, so I do not have any real expectations of being selected on the national team.

“I just happy to be part of the process, and Terry is the coach, so I comfortable.

“He coached me from young, so he knows everything about me.” George, who said he enjoys the central midfield role, is currently unattached.

“He said, “Tobago have way much more players than what I saw in the screening, more players should have been there.”

He said players are not as sharp as they normally would have been.

“The football standard all over the place, players need more time to get back into football.

“My aim is to have a career in football, so I just working hard and hopefully this virus thing will die down and I get an opportunity.” George said.

The national zonal competition is being used as a player identification programme. The intention is to identify players with the potential to represent TT at the senior and under-20 level levels.

National coach Angus Eve said all six zones in T&T will be involved in the tournament.

Not the most proactive policy, therefore unlikely to produce the most propitious outcome ...

See this thing? It's called a wheel. Your task, Ministry of Sport, is to [re]invent one.

Hmmm, what policy would result in higher turnout without offending public health objectives?

THE COMMUNITIES across Tobago, will have the opportunity to express their passion and camaraderie towards their teams, as the Tobago Football Association (TFA)-organised Ascension Premier league, kicks off at the Dwight Yorke Stadium, on Friday.

The appetiser at 5.30 pm, will feature an eastern conference match-up between Sidey’s FC of Speyside and Roxborough Lakers. Bethel United versus Hill United of Patience Hill, will headline a western conference game at 7.30 pm.

The format of the 2022 competition, following a two-year absence due to the covid19 virus, will feature 21 teams, divided in three groups of seven, in the western, eastern and central zones.

The final, with a jackpot of $30,000, will be decided following a knockout round of games, among the top two teams from each conference, and the two best third place finishers.

While no reason was given for his sudden notification, in his letter to TFA president Everton Alfred, Pitt, a former Tobago House of Assembly (THA) Secretary for Sports and Youth Affairs, thanked the board and member clubs for the opportunity to serve as general secretary, and wished the association all the best in their future endeavours.

The eastern conference teams are Charlotteville Police Youth Club, Sidey’s FC, Roxborough Lakers, Belle Garden FC, Goodwood FC, Georgia FC and Youth Stars of Argyle, while the central conference will comprise Calder Hall FC, Mason Hall Police Youth Club, Signal Hill United, Stokely Vale FC of Plymouth, Golden Lane FC, Bertille St Clair’s Academy and Leeds United of Whim.

The western conference will feature Black Rock FC, St Clair Coaching School, Carnbee/Mt Pleasant, Bethel United, Lambeau United, Hills United and 1976 FC Phoenix.

Sidey’s edge Roxborough Lakers in Tobago Ascension Football
By Jelani Beckles (T&T Newsday)

SIDEY’S fought back from a goal down to defeat Roxborough Lakers in the opening round of the 2022 Ascension Tobago Premier Football League at Dwight Yorke Stadium in Bacolet, Tobago, on Friday.

Kyle Civilian opened the scoring for Roxborough in the second minute, but two goals early in the second half gave Sidey’s the victory.

Weah Adams knotted the score in the 46th minute, and two minutes later Chervol Lindow grabbed the winner.

Sidey's captain Kyrion Bishop told KairibelleSports: "It was a hard battle because the preparation was short."

On the team's game plan, he said, "The aim was to, from the whistle, go for it. We have the ability to hold the ball and play it around."

He said trailing their opponent did not faze his team. "It's not the first time, that is football. Being down gives you the drive to go hard."

Bishop said it was a nice feeling to get back on the field after two years lost due to the pandemic.

Prior to that match, Black Rock and Bethel played to a 2-2 draw at the same venue.

T’Jay was on target twice for Bethel scoring in the 46th and 69th minutes of play, but two late goals by Black Rock meant the points were shared.

Trevor Alleyne found the back of the net in the 83rd and Mickel Alleyne converted a penalty in stoppage time.
The Conquering Lion of Judah shall break every chain.

Unprepared grounds stall Tobago Ascension Premier League.
By Jonathan Ramnanansingh (T&T Newsday).

THE TOBAGO Ascension Premier League postponed its second consecutive match day at Shaw Park and Signal Hill on Tuesday owing to unprepared grounds.

The committee, in a statement issued on Tuesday, vented their “frustration” for the Tobago House Assembly’s “failure to have the field cut and marked” for competition.

They also highlighted that several other sporting grounds in Canaan, Mt Gomery, Plymouth and Speyside have poor lighting while those at Mt Pleasant and Goodwood remain closed. These additional issues have also hampered the match schedule.

The release said, “The responsibility of the venues (Shaw Park and Signal Hill) rests solely with the Division of Sports, which employs workers to cut and mark the recreation grounds. The league’s fixtures have been provided well in advance of the match days. To date, only games that have been played were at the Dwight Yorke Stadium which is under the responsibility of Ministry of Sport.”

It added that no conclusive reason has been given for this situation and both the administration and the clubs have been left in a quandary.

The league has requested a meeting with the Director of Sports to address this matter with the view of staging matches this weekend.

They remain hopeful a resolution can be found so preparation can be done in a timely manner to allow more games to be played.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Carnbee/Mt Pleasant end Sidey's quest for Premier treble
T&T Newsday Reports.

SIDEY’S QUEST for an unprecedented third consecutive Tobago Football Premier League title, ended in the quarterfinal round on Sunday.

The Speyside team held the only perfect record going into the Ascension Tobago League knockout round, and were heavy favourites for a repeat.

However, a resurgent Carnbee/Mt Pleasant outfit, who had to win their last three games to navigate the quarterfinals, had Sidey’s number at the Blackrock Recreation Field.

Following a goalless first half, where Sidey’s had the better exchanges, Carnbee/Mt Pleasant came to life in the second period, and their first goal resulted from a brilliant free-kick, in the 53rd minute.

After a small discussion, Jonathan Cadiz was given the responsibility to have a go from 25 yards. His powerful right-footed shot had enough elevation over the Sidey’s wall, and curled away from the goal keeper, into the back of the net.

Carnbee/Mt Peasant scoring machine, Nave Roach, was in the right spot to convert his team's second goal, following a loose ball scrimmage in the Sidey’s penalty area, on 72 minutes.

With their reign as Tobago champions slipping away, the usually-calm Sidey’s coach, Ako George, was most visible on the sidelines, urging his team for an all-out attack in the remaining minutes.

Carnbee/Mt Pleasant goalkeeper Trevis Noray's Man of the Match performance was on full display in the final minutes, as he withstood Sidey’s onslaught to preserve the 2-nil scoreline.

Savio Providence, Carnbee/Mt Pleasant coach was in a jubilant mood after the game. He said “I told you all we are winning this league.

“After a bad start right now things smooth, our structure is on point, the guys training hard, their energy is up and is a nice vibe in Carnbee/Mt Pleasant.”

Commenting on the game, Providence mentioned, “We changed the structure a bit in the second half, which made the difference for us.

“The spectacular free-kick from Cadiz helped to settle the nerves, and the defence and goalkeeper stood firm in the final minutes.”

Stokely Vale FC secured a 2-0 victory over Belle Garden SC, in the second game, courtesy of a first half double from L’Che Edwards in the 17th and 20th minutes.

In Saturday’s quarter-finals at the said venue, 1976 FC Phoenix eliminated Georgia FC via a 3-0 result.

Phoenix were always in control and were rewarded with two goals from Mickael Gem Gordon in the 32nd and 82nd minutes along with Jabarry Francis in the 37th minute.

Signal Hill United advanced via kicks from the penalty spot over Lambeau FC. Tee Jay Cadiz opened the scoring for Signal Hill on 32 minutes and Jean Pau Felix notch Lambeau’s equaliser in the 70th minute.

Signal Hill were perfect in their spot kicks and celebrated a 5-3 win.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

1976 FC Phoenix win Tobago Ascension crown
By Sean Douglas (T&T Newsday)

1976 FC Phoenix defeated Carnbee/Mt Pleasant 3-1 in extra time on Tuesday, to win the Ascension Tobago Football League final, at the Dwight Yorke Stadium, Bacolet. The Canaan/Bon Accord team took home $30,000 for the victory while the runners-up received $20,000.

Phoenix started the brighter of the teams and went ahead in the 43rd minute.

A freekick by Phoenix’s Mickeel Gem Gordon looked to be covered by goalkeeper Trevis Noray, but it somehow slipped through his fingers and into the back of the net.

The long season seemed to have its effects on both teams, as they were forced to make several changes due to injuries, which extended the first half by 12 minutes. Phoenix carried their 1-0 advantage into halftime.

Carnbee/Mt Pleasant lifted their game in the second half, and the flow of the contest settled into a more eye-pleasing affair.

Their impetus resulted in the equaliser 12 minutes into the second half. Nave Roach was fed a through ball in Phoenix penalty area and was brought down by a defender. Roach took the spot kick and easily sent goalie Duvaugh Daniel in the wrong direction.

However, Carnbee/Mt Pleasant suffered a game-changing setback in the 80th minute.

Their back-line was caught out by a perfectly weighted pass from the Phoenix midfield and goalkeeper was forced to leave his line to upend the Phoenix attacker, and he was given a red card.

Down to ten men, including a replacement between the uprights, the odds were always against Carnbee/Mt Pleasant in extra time.

Jariel Arthur headed home a right-sided cross to break the deadlock, ten minutes into extra time.

And Ethan Thomas’ right-footed volley just outside the 18 yards box, in the 113th minute, ensured there was no way back for Carnbee/Mt Pleasant.

Earlier, Signal Hill United defeated Stokely Vale 3-2, in the battle for third place.

During the prize-giving ceremony, Stokely Vale’s striker Lashawn Roberts was acknowledged as the league’s MVP and top goalscorer.

Phoenix technical director Terry Williams hailed his team’s resilience and commitment throughout the season.

He said, “I have to specially commend the players. Through all the ups and downs, they stuck it out – training was never an issue – and we were always confident of winning the tournament. The talent is that good.

“It was not one of our better performances, we had a lot of injuries, but we have the talent and fire-power to beat any team.”

Williams expressed disappointment with the award presentations. “You could believe these people? Imagine, we played unbeaten all season and a fourth-place team get most of the individual awards, including MVP. Like is politics.”

Looking ahead Williams has major objectives for Phoenix. “We will be participating in the Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation Elite League next season. We want to compete against the best players in the country.”
The Conquering Lion of Judah shall break every chain.

Tobago girls set to shine in Concept Coaching U-17 tournament.
T&T Newsday Reports.

FOLLOWING the recently concluded Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Championship, competitive football returns for girls in thrilling fashion as the Concept Coaching Girls Under-17 tournament kicks off in Plymouth, Tobago on Sunday.

Women’s football in Trinidad and Tobago has been sedately progressing since the covid19 restrictions were lifted. In 2022, there was the return of the Women’s League Football (WoLF) – TT’s premier senior women’s league – and the girls’ SSFL competitions. The TT Senior National Women’s Team also competed at the Concacaf Women’s Championship, which proved to be a forgettable campaign for the Soca Princesses.

Due to the lack of advancement in the local women’s game, coach and youth-football-lover Roger Smith believes that girls should be playing more football before they get to the national level – whether it is for the youth teams or senior teams.

He is currently the owner and head coach of the Concept Coaching Football Academy, which provides a platform for boys and girls to develop at grassroots level. The academy is based in east Trinidad and targets youth players from the early age of six to the under-20 level.

Smith began his coaching career in 2009 after attaining his first coaching license from the Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) – TTFA ‘D’ License – which was lectured by TT legend, Lincoln Phillips. In an interview with Newsday, he said “When I did my first course, he (Lincoln Phillips) asked the question – what is your reason for being here? I responded saying that I just wanted to change football in the country.

“I thought that there wasn’t much meaningful, structured youth football being played. So after gaining some experience and attaining several licenses for a few years, I started my own academy in 2018.”

Smith also achieved success in acquiring the Coerver Coaching Youth Diploma 1, a license made specifically for youth coaches inspired by Dutch football coach Wiel Coerver.

The Concept Coaching Academy proved to be a positive step for aspiring footballers as it gave children and parents a place to foster development on the field of play. It also brought the communities of east Trinidad together for fun and competitive football.

Concept Coaching later added to its dynamism by also becoming a competition host and event coordinator for other clubs and academies to have a platform for competitive development at youth level. In this aspect, Smith is assisted by the SSFL president Merere Gonzales, who is the technical consultant at the organisation. Smith stated, “I want to have a product suited to TT’s progress; it’s the way we teach the game and getting coaches to buy into it. This (Concept Coaching) is an assessment platform and competition is the best way to assess players and coaches.”

“I don’t see other academies or coaches as competition because I look at the bigger picture where we (Trinidad and Tobago) are ranked in the world as well as our ability to battle other countries, and I see that we are a bit behind. So, I would wish to get the other academies on board to help fix that issue and bridge the gap at the national and international level.”

“Last year, I hosted an under-14 tournament where St Benedict’s College participated and reached the final. At the end of the previous school season (2022), their coach, whose team won the division, admitted that the Concept Coaching competition helped to develop his team for that title – and that’s what I want to hear more of.”

The upcoming Girls Under-17 tournament will be the 15th competition hosted by Concept Coaching – the third one for girls. One standout player from previous competitions is TT starlet Moenesa Mejidas, who played for Trincity Nationals in the 2019 edition of the Girls Under-20 tournament. She was regarded as one of the best young midfielders as the country, scoring over 100 goals for her school, El Dorado East Secondary.

Mejidas went on to represent TT for the National Under-17 Girls team, then at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games (youngest scorer in the competition’s history) and the 2022 Concacaf U-20 Women’s Championship. Her excellent performances landed her an opportunity abroad where she signed for American college team, West Texas A&M University. This year’s competition will be a one-day event and will feature six teams – Ball Blasters Football Academy, Cox Football Academy, Bishop’s High School, Black Panthers Women’s Sports Club, RSS Phoenix Football Club and Jewels Sports Club.

Whereas only one Trinidadian team (Cox FA) will be at the tournament, the Tobagonian teams were excited to participate and continue their focus-driven evolution on the sister isle.

“There is a reason why they are the National Under-15, National SSFL and National Intercol Champions. It is because they are consistently playing together and playing competitively”, said Smith. The tournament will be in league format where each team will play each other once and the team with the most points will be crowned champions.

The teams will line up in the usual 11v11 structure, each playing five 20-minute games (ten minutes per half) throughout the day. The top three will be awarded along with special prizes for various disciplines including Most Valuable Player, Golden Boot and Most Outstanding Coach.

Smith also announced, “I have a longer version of the tournament in store for the future and I hope that the participating teams, as well as more teams from Trinidad, will be willing to compete again.”

After closing the curtains on this tournament, Concept Coaching’s next mission will be to host a ten-team league for the boys under-8 division spanning across nine Sundays. An official date for the tournament is yet to be determined.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Phoenix, Lakers TFA Premier struggles continue
By Nigel Simon (T&T Guardian)

Former champions, 1976 FC Phoenix and Roxborough Lakers' struggle in the Tobago Football Association Premier Division continued after they were both held to drawn results in their respective conference matches at the Speyside recreational ground on Sunday.

In the opening match of the night's doubleheader, Roxborough Lakers was held to a 1-1 draw by Charlotteville Police Youth Club to leave both clubs stuck at the bottom of the seven-team Eastern Conference standings.

Ariel Walcott had given Lakers a 19th-minute lead, but Jerryon Chadband equalised for Charlotteville in the 76th to earn a share of the points which left both clubs on four points, the same as FC Goodwood, fifth on the standings.

Another pair of former champions Sidey's FC and Georgia FC lead the table with 12 points from six and five matches played respectively, two points ahead of Belle Garden SC and Goal City, a former TFA winner as well.

In the Western Conference, Phoenix missed a chance to move into the third spot on the six-club standings following its goalless draw with Black Rock.

The drawn result left Phoenix fourth on the table with seven points from five matches, six behind leaders Carnbee/Mt Pleasant while Eagles FC is second with ten points, followed by Bethel United, a further two points behind.

In the Central Conference, Stokely Vale and Bertille St Clair’s SA are in a two-way tie at the top of the six-club table with ten points each from four and five matches respectively, with Signal Hill United and Leeds United, next with nine points apiece.

Today at the Shaw Park Cultural Complex in Scarborough, Lakers will have a chance to move out of the bottom two when it faces Georgia FC, who can go top with a draw or win from 5.30 pm.

The focus will then shift to the TFA FA trophy final on Friday at the Dwight Yorke Stadium, Bacolet with Stokley Vale and Sidey's FC set to square off for top honours.

This after Quame Mc Dougall of Stokely Vale and Stephon Antoine of Sidey’s FC both scored hat tricks to lead their respective clubs to semifinal wins at the same venue last Saturday night.

In the opening match, Mc Dougall scored in the 25th, 31st and 58th minutes while Stefano Wright added another in the 29th for Stokely Vale to beat Georgia FC 4-2.

For Georgia, J’sean Washington scored a double in the 45+3, a penalty, and in the 90+1 while Deon Thomas got the other 55th.

Sidey’s FC had a much easier time against Golden Lane and ran out 6-1 winners with Antoine scoring in the third, 25th and 70th minutes with Weah Adams (47th), Kyle Davidson (57th) and Pavel Warrick (90+1) the other scorers after Aaron Clarke briefly drew Golden Lane level in the sixth minute from the penalty spot.

Sidey's, Stokely Vale rally support for TFA KO final
T&T Newsday

The east and west titans of Tobago football will be in a mega showdown at 8.15pm on Saturday, at the Dwight Yorke Stadium, Bacolet, to decide the Tobago Football Association (TFA) knockout champion.

Sidey’s of Speyside and Stokely Vale of Plymouth are both confident of taking the trophy to their respective communities.

Stokely Vale’s manager Quidel Joefield placed a high emphasis on the defence of their title, which was last contested in 2019, owing to the covid19 pandemic. He said, “We know it will be a tough game but we are confident of bringing the trophy back to Plymouth.”

Sidey’s coach Ako George is anxious to reclaim the silverware his team last held in 2015. “Our boys know how to play, so we are never concerned about the opponent. We are on a mission to win all the titles this season,” he said.

Both men are also expecting huge inspiration from their support base. “We always get 100 per cent support from our fans,” Joefied said.

However, George is weary of the detractors. “Our team always has a strong following. Most of the villagers are fully behind our team, but there are some who come to see us lose.”

To add credibility to the game, both teams currently lead the league standings in their respective zones. Sidey’s are at the pinnacle of the east with 12 points. Stokely Vale command the central division on ten points.

The headline for the game could easily read Kwame Mc Dougal versus Stephon Antoine.

The defences will be on high alert, as both strikers are in sublime form and may prove decisive to their respective team’s fortune.

Mc Dougal netted a hat-trick in Stokely Vale’s 4-3 semi-final win over Georgia FC. Antoine also scored three goals for Sidey’s in their 6-1 semi-final victory against Golden Lane FC.

To further enhance the atmosphere, Tobago’s soca diva Adana will headline the entertainment. Some spectators can also try their skills at the kick-for-cash initiative, and the rhythm section will keep the vibes electric.

Georgia FC will face Golden Lane FC for third place at 5.30 pm.
The Conquering Lion of Judah shall break every chain.

Stokely Vale triumph in Tobago FA final thriller
T&T Newsday

It was an evening of drama, entertainment and emotions as Stokely Vale edged Sidey’s in the Tobago Football Association knockout final at Dwight Yorke Stadium, Bacolet on Saturday.

The association would be thrilled as over 2,000 spectators turned out to see the teams in their quest for glory.

At the end of nearly three hours of football, the trophy will stay in Plymouth as Stokely Vale pulled off a gutsy 5-4 win, via kicks from the penalty spot, over their Speyside rivals, following a regulation time and extra time 3-3 stalemate.

Throughout the contest, Sidey’s transition from defence to offence was a thing of beauty and always appeared the more threatening.

However, like true champions, Stokely Vale kept finding ways to disrupt the rhythm and enforce their direct style of play.

Emotions flared a second time, when Stokely Vale’s goalkeeper Deshawn Robley went down following a collision with a Sidey’s player. Robley was on the ground for at least ten minutes before he was stretchered off.

His replacement Jonathan Thomas clearly has some experience between the uprights, as his composure and shot-stopping ability lifted the confidence among the Stokely Vale supporters and kept his team in the match.

Despite 15 minutes of added-on time and 30 minutes extra time, it was down to the dreaded kicks from the penalty spot to decide the champion.

Both teams were perfect after four spot kicks each, but Sidey’s cracked on their fifth attempt. The evergreen Pavel Warrick saw his shot which was heading for the right corner, pushed wide by Thomas.

While the anxiety was evident all over the stadium, Thomas, who was given the responsibility for the fifth kick, calmly stepped up and placed his shot away from the ‘keeper, to spark pandemonium among the Plymouth posse.

Sidey’s coach Ako George shared the inconsolable dejection among his players and congratulated the winners. “It is a bitter pill to swallow,” he said, “We were confident of winning, but we can’t fault the guys, everyone left it out there.

“It is harder for the young players who never experience this type of defeat. It was a tough game, but we dominated most parts, so it’s disappointing. But credit to Stokely Vale, they did not stop fighting even when they were two goals down.”

Winning captain Calvin Chapman said, “It is a good feeling right now. I put it down to the experience of our team. We started off a little shaky, but I pulled the boys together and let the Father do the work.”

Stokely Vale coach James Campbell said, “It is an exciting moment. I knew it would not be an easy win, but it will bring something to the young players and unity in the community.”

Georgia FC won the earlier third-place playoff over Golden Lane FC 7-1.

Goals galore in TFA Eastern Conference
T&T Express

GOALS flowed freely when the Eastern Conference of the Tobago Football Association League resumed at Roxborough Sporting Complex.

Goal City trounced FC Goodwood 6-1 with hat-tricks by both Hakeem Legall (1’, 38’ & 76) and Kino Proctor (60’, 63’ & 77’).

In the first half, Legall found time and space on separate occasions to give the Castara Boys a 2–1 lead, as Keston Jerry pulled one back for Goodwood in the fifth minute.

In the second period, Goodwood started brightly as they went in search of the equaliser. But the introduction of former St. Clair’s Coaching School standout Proctor by the Castara Boys led to the floodgate being opened as Goal City added four more goals. Legall completed his hat-trick in the 76th minute. Proctor then followed a minute later in completing his hat-trick, in what turned out to be a forgettable night for the lads from Goodwood.

In the second game, Conference leaders Georgia found the opposition Roxborough Lakers very challenging and had to battle hard to come away 1-0 winners over the improving Lakers outfit.

Darelle Springer scored in the 75th minute from a corner kick to give Georgia the win. Charlotteville PYC and Sidey’s SC are yet to complete the round of games in the conference.

Georgia now have a five-point lead over Goal City and one more over Sidey’s which have played a game less than Georgia. Roxborough Lakers, FC Goodwood and Charlotteville PYC are now in must-win mode if they hope to qualify for the next round.

16 Tobago coaches training for TTFA C licence certification
By Clayton Clarke (T&T Guardian)

Sixteen coaches in Tobago are participating in the T&T Football Association’s (TTFA) C Licence Certification programme which got underway at the Dwight Yorke Stadium in Bacolet, Tobago, last Thursday.

Technical director of the TTFA, Anton Corneal, along with the TTFA’s head of coaching education Rajesh Latchoo, and coaching educator Paul Decle are conducting the training. The duration of the course is three months.

Corneal says during the initial week-long workshop, the participants looked at the phases of planning a training session.

“We are through things like Session Planning. We are going through Leadership. We did a demo session in Plymouth where coaches will not only be to see and why it is done but asked questions and then they themselves will have to design coaching sessions based on a specific topic.”

Corneal explained that over the 90 days of training, there will be theory and practical sessions.

“It’s a three-month course where it is divided into blocks. This is the first block which is really five days and then they go into a development period in groups of four where they will go back into their own environment and pretty much get to practise what was done.”

He added that the C License Course is being offered to Tobago coaches for the second time for the year. The former national player and coach further said that successful coaches can now vie for coaching stints at schools.

“Hopefully, this level license will be one that will afford them to coach in the (football) academies, in the school’s programmes, and Under-16 and U-14,” said Corneal.

He told Guardian Media that the successful participants can look forward to advance themselves further saying, “In the near future we will be doing a B Licence Course in Tobago over the next month or two.”

Corneal shared that the coaching drive by the TTFA is an attempt by the local governing body for football to increase the number of qualified coaches in the country.

“What we are hoping to do is that is get all our coaches certified whether they coach at the high school level, the club level, the academies or nationally.”

According to Corneal, A Licence Course is also currently taking place.

He said, “Our programme is one that we are able to facilitate A Licence Course. We have three of them so far. The first one is finishing in a few months. We have persons from all across the Caribbean taking part in this A Licence Course. It is just part of our pathway where someone is able to come into us from the C Prep, which is the D Licence, take part in our C and B Licence courses, and then move on to take part in our A Licence courses.”

Alfred: Tobago football before elections
By Walter Alibey (T&T Guardian)

Tobago Football Association (TFA) president Everton Alfred is staying clear of the coming elections of the T&T Football Association to be held tentatively in April until football on the island is the way it is supposed to be.

His board of members, comprising himself, Desmond Alfred- 1st Vice President, Carel Percy- 2nd VP, and Ronald Duke, the 3rd VP will meet with several items on the agenda to be discussed, including the elections and a discussion on the recent amendments to the football association Constitution which were all accepted at the Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) on January 28.

Alfred assured that he is one person on the island who is anything but interested in the election of a new executive for the T&TFA, however, he said he is more than willing to work with anyone who is elected.

“I am not interested in having any slate or being on any slate. I expect that the people seeking election will visit us and make their presentations. As far as I am concerned, I am willing to work with anybody once the interest of Tobago football is being taken care of,” Alfred explained.

“For me, I have to make sure that my house is clean first before I can go outside. On the island here, I know that we have to move Tobago football forward. At present, it is not where it ought to be,” Alfred said.

The longstanding Tobago football administrator is already tackling the regular issues of referee-bashing and ridicule in the game, by putting together a forum that will treat the issues between players and referees can be dealt with.

He described it as a critical issue in the sport that has to be dealt with. Another concern for him is the construction of a quality Tobago football team for both boys/men and women/girls that will help serve the interests of T&T football.

In addition, the Tobago FA will also focus on clubs being compliant, as well as the new Safeguarding policies. So far, the coming T&TFA elections, the final mandate given to the FIFA-appointed Normalisation Committee back in 2020, has generated huge interest with a few candidates making clear their intentions.

Already Keiron Edwards, the Eastern Football Association (EFA) president has confirmed his interest in being the new TTFA president, as well as businessman Dennis Latiff, the Southern Football Association boss, who told Guardian Media Sports that he is now in the process of putting together his slate.

Also expected to vie for the leadership of football in T&T is Selby Browne, the Veterans Football Foundation of T&T president, and Brian Jordan, the promoter and founder of the NLCL Community Youth Cup. Colin Wharfe, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the T&T Premier Football League is also rumoured to be a possible contender, but he told Guardian Media last week that he is consumed by the demands of the T&T PFL.
