France's national football team was further drawn into the sex scandal involving Franck Ribéry yesterday after two more players' names were cited in connection with an investigation into underage prostitution.

Unnamed judicial sources told the French media that Karim Benzema, the Real Madrid forward, and Hatem Ben Arfa, a striker for Marseille, are expected to be questioned in coming days as "witnesses" in the inquiry.

The scandal engulfing Les Bleus, which began when Ribéry was questioned by police in connection with a prostitution ring, also deepened after judicial sources said the 27-year-old had admitted having sex with a 17-year-old prostitute but denied having known she was underage. In France it is illegal to buy sex from someone under 18.

The Bayern Munich forward's lawyer, Sophie Bottai, has insisted that, while the footballer did provide witness testimony to French investigators looking into a ring allegedly run out of a Paris nightclub, he was being heard simply as a witness and not as a suspect.

No charges were filed against him, said Bottai, and he was not held in police custody.

However, the rumours swirling around the team have not ceased since reports surfaced at the weekend that Ribéry and his fellow player Sidney Govou had been questioned by French investigators.

On 12 April police had searched the Zaman Café, a restaurant and nightclub on the Champs Elyseés, and arrested a dozen people, among them prostitutes and a man suspected of being their pimp.

Refusing to say whether or not his client had been questioned by police, Govou's lawyer, Thierry Braillard, said the 30-year-old had "never set foot" in the Zaman.

But the player's name has been cited repeatedly in connection with the investigation being led by the investigating judge André Dando. A judicial source said that, while his married team-mate Ribéry remained a witness in the affair, "it is up to the judge to decided whether to formally investigate him [Ribéry] or not".

In France, prostitution is legal but several activities surrounding it are against the law. If found guilty of paying an underage sex worker, a client could go to prison for three years and be fined up to €45,000 (Ł39,000).

Yesterday the two other players drawn into the scandal vehemently denied involvement in alleged activities at the Zaman, which has now been shut down. "It's absolutely not me," Ben Arfa told L'Equipe TV. Even if his client were summoned by the police tomorrow, added his lawyer, "that would change nothing".

Benzema's agent, Karim Djaziri, also spoke out in defence of his client. "Karim has not been questioned. He has nothing to do with this affair," he told LePost.fr.

As speculation mounted in Paris, the French football federation (FFF) issued a terse statement saying it was aware of the investigation and certain players' involvement "as mere witnesses". But it said it would "refrain from all comment" until the police had done their job.

French media have reported allegations that Zahia Dehar, now 18, had paid sex with several football stars, including Franck Ribery, Karim Benzema, and Sidney Govou.

The players have testified to police and could face up to three years in prison and a euro45,000 ($60,000) fine if found guilty. Prostitution is legal in France, but prostitutes must be over 18 years old, and clients are liable if they are not.

The case is only at the judicial inquiry stage, and no charges have been filed, but the players’ reputations are at stake.

“I never told anybody I was a minor,” Dehar said in an interview published Thursday by the French weekly magazine Paris Match. She said she had been paid for sex since the age of 16 when she began partying in fashionable Paris nightclubs and that she charged about ?2,000 ($2,650) for a night with a customer.

“But I’m not a prostitute,” she said in the interview, arguing she was an “escort girl” instead because she didn’t belong to a network or a pimp, and sometimes chose not to have sex with customers she didn’t like.

Dehar claimed she met Benzema at a nightclub and he bought her services, and alleged that Govou had too.

Ribery flew her to a hotel in Germany for the night as a birthday present to himself, she alleged. “I’m a nice present, aren’t I?” Dehar was quoted as saying, adding that she wasn’t “a groupie” and that Ribery had paid the same price as the rest.

“Whether a football star or not, I don’t care, he’s a customer like any other.”

None of the players publicly commented on Dehar’s allegations Thursday.

Dehar also acknowledged she had given every detail to police because, she said, they threatened to revoke her French citizenship. Born in Algeria, Dehar said she and her family obtained French nationality in 2009. She said her family never knew she worked in nightclubs, thinking she was spending nights at a friend’s house.

Dehar said she initially became an escort to save money to buy a beauty parlor.

Ribery charged in under-age sex probe

France international footballers Frank Ribery and Karim Benzema have been charged with having had sex with an under-age prostitute, as magistrates cracked down on an alleged celebrity vice ring.

The indictments issued Tuesday are the first stage of a formal judicial investigation that could lead to a trial and, if convicted, both players face up to three years in jail and a fine of 45,000 euros (58,000 dollars).

Ribery, who plays for German giants Bayern Munich, arrived at the offices of the investigating magistrates at the Palace of Justice in Paris in handcuffs, according to several witnesses, but he was freed without preconditions after the hearing.

Benzema denies under-age prostitute allegations

French striker Karim Benzema denies the charges of soliciting an under-age prostitute that have been formally made against him, his lawyer Sylvain Cormier said on Wednesday.

"Karim Benzema formally denies the allegations made against him," Cormier told AFP, adding that he enjoyed the full support of his club, Real Madrid.

"He disputes what (the prostitute) Zahia D said. He has not had sexual relations with her. There is no reason why the player's words should count less than those of Zahia D."

(REUTERS) - The trial of French football stars Franck Ribery and Karim Benzema over claims they paid for sex with an underage call girl was adjourned for procedural reasons yesterday until 2014

Benzema, a Real Madrid striker, and Ribery, a Bayern Munich winger, are to be tried on charges of paying Zahia Dehar, a prostitute-turned-fashion muse, for sex in 2008 and 2009, when she was only 16, then 17 years old. Neither footballer showed up in court yesterday.
The pair, both players in France's national squad, have been under investigation since 2010 over the affair. They risk up to three years in jail and fines of 45 000 euros ($60 000) if found guilty of soliciting the services of an underage prostitute.
At yesterday’s hearing, Ribery's lawyer asked the Paris court to seize the Constitutional Council to interpret a clause in the penal code that forbids soliciting underage prostitutes. He argued that it was too vague to be used against his client.
The court found his objection serious enough to adjourn the trial until January 20, 2014, allowing time for the issue to be put to a higher court and possibly passed to the Supreme Court.
In France, paying for sex is not illegal but underage prostitution is, along with pimping.
Ribery and Benzema's lawyers had called for the case to be dropped, saying their clients did not know Dehar was a minor.
According to court documents, the Algerian-born Dehar became a prostitute around 15 or 16 but would tell clients she was 18.
Known for her ample curves and a mane of peroxide blonde hair, the case has won her fame and a new career as a protégée of designer Karl Lagerfeld, under whose guidance she has launched a lingerie line. She did not attend yesterday's hearing.
Ribery's lawyer welcomed the trial's adjournment but Benzema's lawyer said the wait was "painful" for his client.
