Tyson Gay and Asafa Powell: Olympic sprinters fail drug tests

US sprinter Tyson Gay and Jamaica's former 100m world record holder Asafa Powell have failed drug

Gay, 30, the joint-second fastest man over 100m, was notified by the US Anti-Doping Agency on Friday that his A sample from an out-of-competition test in May had returned a positive.

The management company for Powell confirmed he had tested positive for a banned substance.
Another Jamaican sprinter, Sherone Simpson, has also failed a drug test.

The Olympic 4x100m relay silver medallist said on Sunday she had tested positive for a stimulant at last month's national championships.

Powell and Simpson's doping positives come a month after Jamaican Olympic champion Veronica Campbell-Brown tested positive for a banned diuretic.

The 30-year-old Powell was the last man to hold the individual 100m record before compatriot Usain Bolt broke it in 2008. He is still the fourth fastest man of all time.

Powell later helped Jamaica to win 400m relay gold at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
Gay, the fastest man in 2013, is waiting for the results of his 'B' sample.

He has already withdrawn from next month's World Championships in Moscow.

"I don't have a sabotage story... I basically put my trust in someone and was let down," he said.
"I know exactly what went on, but I can't discuss it right now.
"I hope I am able to run again, but I will take whatever punishment I get like a man."

More to follow.

Report: Five Jamaican athletes fail drug tests

Five Jamaican athletes - including two London 2012 medallists - have tested positive for banned substances, according to the Jamaican newspaper the Gleaner.

Two field and three track athletes reportedly tested positive for the banned substances following recent tests at Jamaica's National Stadium.

The paper reports that two of the runners who allegedly tested positive for the banned substances won medals at the Olympic Games in London.

The Jamaican Anti-Doping Agency said it had not received any independent verification of the adverse findings.

The revelations, a month ahead of the World Championships, come after the American sprinter Tyson Gay revealed he had tested positive for a banned substance.

Asafa Powell's hotel room raided by Italian police, with a stash of pills and medicine found
Italian police have reportedly discovered a stash of unidentified pills and medicines in the hotel room of Asafa Powell, the Jamaican sprinter accused of doping.

Carabinieri officers searched Powell’s hotel room overnight, a day after it emerged that he had tested positive for a banned stimulant, oxilofrine, at the Jamaican championships last month.

Powell and other Jamaican athletes have been training in the area, part of the Friuli-Venezia-Giulia region which abuts the border of Slovenia.

Police from a specialist drug and food safety unit found around 50 boxes and vials containing medicines and pills, according to Italian press reports.

“For the moment there have been no arrests,” a police source told the Italian press.

The Jamaican runner was staying in the hotel, “Fra I Pini” or “Among the Pines” in the coastal resort town of Lignano Sabbiadoro.
The searches were carried out after requests from WADA, the World Anti-Doping Agency.

Police were “surprised” at the quantity of drugs they found in the hotel room because it was “disproportionate” to the needs of one athlete, the Ansa news agency reported.

The drugs were sent to police laboratories for testing and identification.

If shown to be banned substances, they could prove to be “the smoking gun” in the doping scandal, Ansa said.

“The Jamaican squad has chosen the training facilities at Lignano Sabbiadoro for years and has always shown great appreciation for the town,” said the mayor, Luca Fanotto.

Powell, 30, has insisted that he never knowingly took banned substances. "I am not now – nor have I ever been – a cheat," he posted on Twitter.

He has called for an investigation as to how the oxilofrine could have entered his system.

Powell appeals for reduction in ban

Powell appeals for reduction in ban
Published: Wednesday, May 28, 2014 (T&T Guardian)

LAUSANNE—Jamaican sprint star Asafa Powell has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, asking for his 18-month ban to be reduced to three months.

The 31-year-old tested positive for the banned stimulant oxilofrine at last year’s national championships and was slapped with the suspension by the Jamaica Anti-doping Commission in April.

However, Powell subsequently branded the ruling as “unfair and unjust” and said he would appeal.

Fellow Jamaican sprinter Sherone Simpson, who was also banned for 18 months following a positive drugs test for the same substance, has also appealed to CAS for a reduction in the JADCO suspension.

Following the positive test, Powell blamed Canadian physical trainer Chris Xureb for providing him with the supplements, that included the banned substance.

However, a three-member JADCO disciplinary panel said the sprinter had been “negligent” and had been “at fault”, and banned him until December 28 this year.

The suspension was dated to the time of the positive test last year.

Powell immediately vowed to fight the ban, pointing out it was the first time in his 12-year career that he had ever tested positive.

ATHLETICS: Asafa Powell, Sherone Simpson Clear To Compete At National Trials

Leighton Levy, Gleaner Writer

KINGSTON, Jamaica:
Asafa Powell and Sherone Simpson are free to compete at the national championships later this month after the Court of Arbitration for Sport today upheld a stay of execution for the suspensions of the athletes until hearings set for July 7 and 8 have been held.

However, the 18-month suspensions could be reinforced should the athletes fail in their appeal.

“The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) upheld today the application for a stay of the execution of the suspension currently served by the Jamaican sprinters Asafa Powell and Sherone Simpson pending the resolution of the arbitration conducted before the CAS,” said a statement from the CAS.

“The athletes are free to compete from now on but may have to serve the remaining part of their ban later if the sanction is eventually confirmed by CAS.”

Both athletes filed appeals at CAS against the decisions of the Jamaica Anti-doping Disciplinary Panel Tribunal of April 8 and 10 2014 to suspend them for a period of 18 months, starting on 21 June 2013.

The athletes put forward that the offense committed is minor and request that the suspensions be reduced to three months.

The Jamaica Anti-doping Disciplinary Panel Tribunal sanctioned the athletes following a positive anti-doping test with the banned substance Oxilofrine.

The national championships are scheduled for June 26-29 to select Jamaica’s team to the Commonwealth Games set for July 23-August 3 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Powell is the 2006 100 metre champion while Simpson copped the 200 metre title that year.

Rumours is that Kelly-Ann has had her hearing with the TT NAAA and the date of her return to competition is to be announced this coming weekend at National Trials or right after.

Would be good if we could have her back for the Commonwealth Games but guess we will know how soon she will be back by this time next week.
