T&T downs Honduras to seal Gold Cup quarterfinal place.
CONCACAF.COM.

Trinidad & Tobago clinched a place in the CONCACAF Gold Cup quarterfinals, defeating 10-man Honduras 2-0 on Monday at BBVA Compass Stadium. Kenwyne Jones and Kevin Molino scored second-half goals in the triumph.

Despite the setback, the Hondurans still finished at the top of the Group B table with six points.  Even though they Trinidad and El Salvador finished level on points at four apiece and goal difference, the Caribbean side took second due to scoring more goals (4-3).

With a spot in the knockout phase already assured, Honduras (2-0-1) opted to rest regulars Andy Najar, Rony Martinez, Roger Rojas and goalkeeper Donis Escober against the Soca Warriors.  Alajuelense striker Jerry Palacios saw his first action of the tournament.

Trinidad also made changes of its own, presenting a more attack oriented team with Molino and Cornell Glenn being named in the starting eleven.

Kenwyne Jones was handed the captain’s armband in place of Densill Theobold and took the responsibility to heart, playing with vigor and a sense of urgency.

The Stoke City forward was in the thick of things as Trinidad looked for an early goal. In the first 20 minutes Jones had two chances that went close, heading over the crossbar and shooting the other just wide of the target. His best opportunity came in 33rd minute, when he was in alone on advancing goalkeeper Kevin Hernandez, but failed to push the ball past him.

Palacios thought his 29th minute volley had given Honduras the lead, but he was adjudged to be offside.

The odds for Trinidad got even better in the 37th minute when Jose Velasquez was sent off for his tackle from behind on Cornell Glen, reducing Honduras to 10 men.

Two minutes into the second half, the Soca Warriors took advantage of the extra man as they were awarded a penalty kick.  Glen was pushed down in the penalty area and Jones stepped up to power the ensuing spot kick past Hernandez to give Trinidad a 1-0 lead.

Molino doubled Trinidad’s advantage in the 66th minute, collecting a cross from Jones inside the six-yard box and placing past Hernandez.

NOTES: Trinidad’s Gold Cup winless streak was snapped at 11 games…Trinidad posted its first shutout in 22 all-time Gold Cup outings…Honduras has scored one goal or less in eight of its last 10 Gold Cup games.

Big losses, but that's what international football and competition is all about.  Birch will probably come in for Hyland and KD for Molino

Hond. only had 10 men and were 2 goals down. For most of the sec. half they didn't pressure our def.s due to the red card issue.

I hope so. I'm not a Theobald hater, I do believe he has warranted a place in the squad. I just can't see what he does better than the other MF's in the squad. He isn't an attacking or creative threat and IMHO most of the other CM in the squad can do as good if not better in the holding role. If Birchall can't get this oppertunity to play he must be doing real mess in practice sessions.

Congratulations, on this huge win, to the team and the coaching staff. Coach, you realize that when you lost against Haiti, Shabazz was laughing like Santa Claus and now with this win he cussing like a grumpy old man. Nevertheless, it's a great win against a team that must have given you sleepless nights before they named a "B" team to play the game. You exorcised your demon and came out on top.
Personally, all I wanted was for the team to play the game the way it's supposed to be played and to show the fans of the game the respect that is due. Not much to ask for.
I didn't see any of the games but from what I am reading it sounds like the fundamentals are still not 100%. You cannot go into the next round hoping to win the game with poor execution of the fundamentals of the game. The team has to be on it's game, 100%. The movements on and off the ball has to be precise and intelligent, control of the ball has to be perfect, your passes, accurate and weighted properly, shooting the ball should not be an after thought, each man in support of one another, every man's role in this mission must be made clear. The will to win imprinted in their minds and hearts and the desire to compete, indelibly written. Do those things right and Mexico can be had, hell, every team can be beaten.
You say you're not a miracle worker but I believe you and your team can win this tournament. Do that and you would be god. with a small "g" of course

Deese Honduras made 4 or 5 changes. TT made 5 changes. So if that was our A team playing Hondo B team, then we played El Salv. and Haiti with our B team. Look we got the luck of the draw. We got a team that did NOT HAVE to win to move on. We had to win to progress. We won. Did we play super. No! But much better than the past 5 years. Hondo also palyed with 10 men. The man who fouled Cornel deserved the red.

Haiti on the other hand, had only themselve to blame. They play attractive football. They are a more cohesive team than TT. If our squad can play more friendlies on a regular basis, we can get to the stage where Haiti, CR and Honduras have reached. We not there yet. We need a mass infusion of new and young talent.

Glad for the win. We did play Honduras B team after they had qualified and with 10 men But say what that is football. Our players were much more experienced professionals as well. best of luck for Mexico! This Mexican team not at their best either. So T&T has a chance!

This lineup wouldve definitely beat el salvador and haiti.

If molino is out the next rounds boucaud should replace his position and carlos should replace boucaud place on de right. Please no theobald!!!

Am...  I understand the sentiments and very happy.  But all this B team A team talk is schupid talk.  We are still a fairly weak team even with that squad last night.  I do have confidence in our tactical approach but anything beyond here is above and beyond.  Which is good for us.  Stay level.  If the ball roll nice and we get past Mexico, ey look we might win Gold Cup.

 :beermug: :beermug: :beermug: Realistic perspective.
Too many ppl getting carried away with a win. We need to take a step back and not look at our football with rose coloured glasses.

We need a mass infusion of new and young talent.
it was more like honduras C team, they did not take some of their top players to the gold cup.  about 5 or 6 players had less than 5 caps in the team that played us.

By de same token, T&T didn't have Peltier, Hector, Guerra, Mikeil WIlliams, Cordell Cato, Primus, or Bateau.

So dat make dis T&T team wha now?  A D team?

Nah, probably our B team vs their 10 man C team.

Technically their C- team.
