Hart starts talent search in Guayaguayare.
T&T Express Reports.

Trinidad and Tobago’s senior men’s team head coach Stephen Hart was part of a TTFA contingent that journeyed to the Guayaguayare Recreation Ground to witness the Super League encounter between Westside Superstarz and home team Guaya United on Sunday afternoon.

It was the first visit by Hart to a local competitive match since he took over as T&T head coach a few weeks ago.

Hart was accompanied by TTFA general secretary Sheldon Phillips and director of communications Shaun Fuentes while executive committee member Sherwyn Dyer and Super League official Douglas James  also attended.

Hart explained that he would be having a look at the talent available throughout the twin-island state, not just in the T&T Pro League but also the lower levels within the regional associations.

“I thought it was important to see the first and second placed teams in the League and familiarise myself once again with local football. It was a good match to see. In front of a good atmosphere,” Hart said.

The San Fernando-born former St Benedict’s College student and player said he would be continuing his visits over the coming weeks. His next international assignment with the senior team is an invitational tournament in Saudi Arabia in early September.

“I want to go to as many games and be as visible as possible to try to get a feel and understanding from coaches and administrators in the various leagues and see how they all fit in with what essentially is our country’s football,” Hart said.

Hart and  TTFA director of football Leo Beenhakker also attended national Under 15 team training at Hugo Francis Ground (Woodford Lodge) in Chaguanas last week as well as a national senior women’s team training session at the Hasely Crawford Stadium. Beenhakker has a huge interest in getting a deeper feel of the local game, even managing to take in some action at the Queen’s Park Savannah.

“Football is played in all corners and sometimes there are gems waiting to be discovered,” Phillips said.  “And more and more it’s becoming a community sport which is why we will target these areas with greater interest.”

“We want to provide as much service and support that we can from the TTFA. We want to share whatever resources that comes our way to the League and the communities.

“At the end of the day it’s all about the players and the coaches. For us to be a strong association, we need to have stronger clubs, players that are well looked after and coaches that have access to resources to do their jobs properly. Whether it be the Pro League, Super League, the Secondary Schools or the other small leagues in the regional associations, we have to be facilitators to try and ensure they can do their jobs better,” Phillips added.

Among the players on display on Sunday included former national Under-20 and Under-17 captain Leston Paul who is back home after completing his tenure at the University of Central Florida, as well as former national youth players Qian Grosvenor and Jack Weedon.

Sitting on the opposite team benches were former national player and coach Ron La Forest for Guaya and Nigel Pierre for the visitors. Guaya triumphed in front of hundreds of their home fans by a 4-2 margin to go top of the table on ten points after four matches. The hosts got goals from  Russell Alfred (11th), Carlon Hughes (43rd) and Ryan Stewart (45th and 59th) while Kevon Piper and Akeem Ash got second half goals for Westside.

I'm all for a return of the north / south  classic , oh how i remember seeing the best players @the oval and @ skinner park  , can't  forget the not so long ago times....  it would certainly be great for the ttfa to reconsider returning to  the north / south classic as an independence day football feature ......  it may just be the right time to do so........  get the fans interested once more .....  sounds good to me :beermug:

This is an excellent way to start a talent search, why go looking abroad when we have it right in our backyard, from what i understand the best Football in the country is in that Super League,is not because it's free la d da etc it's just raw talent at it's best, that's what the good old days was all about.

It have some good Minor Leagues in the country like Santa Cruz,La Brea etc check them out too, imagine Jabloteh and Joe Public gone through where all those players gone?we always looking outside before we look inside,i give kudos to Hart for doing this because no foreign Coach will do that.

U know what's funny we does make them right here and everybody besides our local Coaches gets the credit for them.

There's a reason why sometimes coaches look abroad for players.

Not because they biased against local based players....but perhaps coaches not just looking at what players can do when they have the ball.  We have a lot of those kinds of players.

The players that we don't either tend to have or tend to overlook are those that can play & know what to do when the opposition has the ball.

The modern player has the package of technical ability, defensive discipline, fitness, and speed of thought and play.

How many of our players can we honestly say have that combination?

Way more than 200 people at the game

You will not find the finished product in the league

The idea is to find youth who have some ability and get them into an environment where they can then be  in a position help the team

I gave the same advice to a father of a 14 year old who wanted to send videos to coaches. I explained that there's plenty of players who can work well with the ball. What coaches want to see is how he plays without the ball, which will be at least 95% of the 90 minutes of each game. Does he keep shape? Does he make "blind" runs to free up space for others? Does he take players out of the game? Does he anticipate? Does he track back when required? Does he support his team mates? Does he fill in to other positions i.e. if he's a DM and a wing back makes a run, does he cover his position?

These are the things that makes a player stand out. He's already expected to have a decent first touch, good control, pace, strength etc

Hart can afford to take the time to scout at these levels and look for that 'diamond in the rough' because he's not in the middle of trying to qualify for a tournament. He has time to go looking for these young fellas with raw talent. People like Mats, Beenie, Latas and Pfister were too busy trying to qualify to go looking for talent to develop.

Maturana, one of T&T best coaches went and scouted.  He got hampered by some on that same list you posted there.

Under Maturana plenty were identified and some got the chance...unfortunately we are too short sighted to appreciate his contributions.

Different times

That was under Jack Camps and Groden

Maybe under Tim Kee and Phillips things would have been different

Remember Maturana had the blacklist to deal with as well

If I'm not mistaken, the senior men's national team coach's role is not to develop players.  His role is to have them functioning as a team, employing the tactics and formations he wants them to perform.

It should be a given that players coming into the senior men's national team will already have the fundamentals, technical ability, and fitness levels needed to perform at the international level.

I think player development is more a task and responsibility for youth coaches and the clubs.

Some of our local coaches have already said there are at least 15 local based coaches who can successfully perform the role of senior men's national team coach given the same resources and support as coaches not locally based.   Seeing that we have this kind of expertise in our midst, players coming into the senior men's national team should have no difficulty in displaying the required skill set for international football.

"Diamonds in the rough" will be extremely hard to find because our local based coaches will have already identified and developed them.

Granted. However, these scouting exercises give him the opportunity to see/find players whose progress he would like to track.
