Funny Old Game, Football (Part 2)

Police 3 = 0 San Juan Jabloteh

Not the most appetising fixture at a windy Larry Gomes Stadium today. But, again, plenty of incidents, and maybe, refereeing blunders?

Don't let the scoreline mislead you, Jabloteh, for me, were the much better team and had lots of possession. What they lack is a clinical target man. With a Caesar or Plaza today, Jabloteh would have scored a hat full.
Don't get me wrong, Police defended in their usual workmanlike, robust manner. Although this is the best season for Police in a long time, they have regressed since they peaked with a 4-0 drubbing of Central F.C. 4 months ago. There is just no flair to their game. They do, however, break well with the long ball and today, their 3 goals could be either pure luck or clinical finishing. I'll let you decide.

Jabloteh actually scored first with a great cross into the box from the touchline that was neatly tapped home. However, the ref's assistant said the ball had gone out of play. Not sure about that one.

First Police goal came from the right. Minutes before, Joel Lewis went on a maundering run and hit the side netting from outside the box. In the 38th minute he repeated the same move. As the Jabloteh players prepared for the goal kick, the referee pointed to the centre spot. Confusion was on the faces of the 50 or so supporters in the stand and all 22 players on the pitch. When the players realised that the referee awarded a goal, several San Juan players approached the fourth official asking how can it be a goal when the ball is alongside the goal net.

At half time, I was told that the net had a whole and the ball hit the stanchion and bounced out through the hole. Now I was never good at physics, but how can a ball coming from the right of the pitch enter the goal, hit the right stanchion and bounce through a hole in the right side of the net?

But it may well have happened and the ref gave a correct call.

Second goal was, pure and simply, a goalkeeping fumble. A bread & butter shot came in from Police, the diving keeper failed to hold it and it bounced off his chest into the path of Kenaz Williams. Good striking instinct from Williams. Maybe the keeper will say that the ball moved in the air, as it was quite windy.

Third goal was either a masterpiece of calculated shooting or pure luck. Jameel Perry was 25 yards out with no options and launched a shot/cross (he'll obviously say it was a shot!) which kind of ballooned towards goal and dipped over the keepers head. This one definitely moved in the air, but was the keeper in the wrong position?

Well, 3 goals are 3 goals, but I feel Jabloteh will feel very disappointed.  Statistics don't always prove a case, but Jabloteh had 7 corners while Police had none. I'm pretty sure they had more shots on target too.

Nearly forgot: Because of the wind, the corner flags kept blowing over and the ref stopped the game several times so they could be re erected. Quite frustrating for the flow of the game and in the end players from both teams assisted the ref and 4th official. Funny thing is, the flag at the other end was also virtually lying down, but the ref wasn't concerned with that one!

Also, if there was a hole in the goal net, why didn't the assistant ref spot it when he inspected it?

Funny old game (to be continued, I expect!)

This evening’s Pro League fixture between Central FC and Police FC has been postponed to a date to be determined due to protest outside Parliament in Port of Spain.

Central and Police were due to meet from 6 pm at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva in the first game of a double header. The second fixture, which pits league leader DIRECTV W Connection against fourth place Point Fortin Civic, will kick off as scheduled at 8 pm.

Funny old game, football (part 162!)

So, Central get a phone call just after midday saying that Police F.C. will not be able to field a team for tonight's game as they have had to report for duty to police the demonstration outside parliament.
More on that to follow.

W.Connection vs Point Fortin Civic  8pm Ato Boldon

Apparently, many people arrived for the 6pm fixture and turned away when they discovered that it was cancelled. (This is just hearsay from a security guard at the stadium)

But there was still the usual decent crowd following Point, probably around 4-500 (more than at the demonstration in town!)

Very wet, rainy conditions which made control difficult for both teams. Connection looked more like their old selves and were organised at the back. Point really struggled offensively but defended well. Connection had a free kick outside of the box in the 8th minute and Alvin Jone's bullet hit the wall, and deflected over the head of Marvin Phillip into the net.

Connection continued to pile on the pressure in search of a second goal but Point held on.

Connection put on Neil Benjamin at half time to give them pace down the right. He immediately made an impact by skinning the Point left back, but after this, the defender just gave him an extra yard and he didn't really threaten. But Benjamin's appearance prevented Connection from defending as high up the field and this allowed Point to take hold of the game. Connection did get a useful one v one break, but Phillip was solid and made the save.

Point never really looked like they could score and Cyrus had Joseph in his pocket all night. Gerard Williams played his usual Captain Fantastic game and the game looked certain to finish 1 - 0 as Connection wound down the clock.

There had been a long injury delay when Connection's keeper saved from a Civic shot and this delay proved decisive. Teesdale had come on late in the game but he did prove to be an influence. Then, suddenly as everyone looked towards the ref for his whistle, a mistake allowed Point a two v two break. The ball was slid to Cooper who took an extra touch to steady the ball and planted it into the Connection net.
The crowd went crazy! As soon as Connection kicked off, the game ended to euphoria from the traveling Civic fans.
In my opinion, it was a fair result. Connection bossed the first half, but failed to get the crucial second goal, while Point kept on plugging away in the second half.
Plenty more Pro League excitement to come over the next 6 weeks!

Point really have to build on the supporters they have.

4-500 is really nice o hear.

Police pulling out last minute is the price we have to pay having government teams in the PFL.

Point will do really well with such attendance - I'm sure it'll be a big draw compared to other teams in the league for players - everyone likes to play in front of a crowd :p Also good financially.

Funny old game, football (part 162 The Sequel)

Defence Force 2 - 0 North East Stars

4pm Ato Boldon

Probably more people on the pitch than in the stands for this game, which had a huge bearing on the race for the top two spots.

Both teams started as you would expect, the resilient Stars defence and the persistent pot shots and charges by Army.

Defence Force took the lead through some unusually lax defending by Stars. Meanwhile, Caesar looked no match for the Army defence and never looked his usual dangerous self.

North East made two changes at half time, which reflected the desperation of Angus Eve to earn at least a point to keep in touch with Central. Second half was a much better attacking display by Stars and you expected a breakthrough to come as Army were forced to concentrate on defence. It seemed like only a matter of time before the equaliser when disaster struck.

Cleon John, who has been arguably the leagues best keeper along side Jan-Michael Williams took a goal kick. If he had made a list of all the players on the pitch to give the ball to, Devon Jorsling would have been No 21. Yet that's exactly who the North East captain passed to. Jorsling, standing alone 10 yards from the box, controlled the ball and thundered the ball goalwards. John, who could easily have frozen, remarkably got a hand to the shot, but it wasn't enough to prevent Jorsling doubling the lead.

As if that wasn't bad enough, in the last minute Caesar was red carded, apparently for an off the ball incident which will see Stars top scorer miss a crucial game, possibly against Central F.C. a week Tuesday. I'm not sure if Angus Eve is a Baptist, but I suspect he'll definitely still be shouting throughout Monday's holiday!

Despite posters such as King Deese still describing the Pro League as poor, todays fixtures again delivered up an exciting evening of football entertainment.

Police F.C. vs Caledonia AIA  6pm Ato Boldon

Ok, not the most exciting fixture on paper, but this game is played on grass!
Both teams are pretty much fighting for a 6th place finish, but you would have thought more was at stake by the way the game was played. Police haven't been too bad most of the season, but they did hit a slump which maybe prevented them challenging for 3rd or 4th spot.
Lately, they've been playing a bit like Constable Plod, eking out results without any verve, but tonight, especially in the first 20 minutes, they were more like the fabled Flying Squad. They must have had three decent one vs ones in the first 10 minutes. Sadly, all 3 attempts looked like pass backs, with the keeper not really threatened. But the point is, Police were actually producing free flowing attacking football!
Caledonia too, had some nice breaks and also fluffed a one vs one.
But it wasn't a surprise when Lewis put Police ahead and deservedly so.
Both teams didn't appear to field their strongest teams, but the game was well contested. Caledonia equalised in 35th minute with their Lewis jumping on the score sheet.
The game wasn't as riveting in the second half. Police brought on club captain Todd Ryan around 70 minutes but he didn't have much impact. Caledonia kept pushing and Keyon Edwards popped home the winner with around 5 minutes left.

Caledonia 2 - 1 Police F.C.

My main talking point was that the Police keeper wore an orangy-red jersey which was uncomfortably similar to Caledonia's jerseys. A couple of weeks ago a goalie wore a green jersey playing against Jabloteh. Again, the greens were different shades, but aren't keepers, like officials, supposed to clearly stand out? Only two or three seasons ago, Jabloteh forfeited a game because their red socks clashed with Ma Pau's!  ??? Spoke to the referee today. She said she ordered the keeper to change his shirt but he didn't have a spare so rather than call off the game she allowed the jersey to be used as it was similar, but not the same. Fair enough.

The main event tonight was Defence Force vs Point Fortin

Point needed to win to stay in touch with 2nd, 3rd or 4th place. Army needed to win to grab 2nd or even 1st spot.
People, this was a fantastic game. And let me say that the man of the match was referee Neil Brizan. I don't think he made a bad call. And the game was ferocious at times with heavy challenges all over the field. But Brizan recognised the passion in the game and mostly kept his cards in his pocket.  :beermug:
Both teams started of fast, but Civic looked the more dangerous and you could see that goals would be scored. Modeste put the Southerners in front with a neat header and you felt that Point would add to their total. Marvin Phillip made some important stops and looked unbeatable.
!0 minutes into the second half and Point doubled their lead, with a goal from former Central defender, Wesley John. That looked to be 3 points in the bag, but Army hadn't read the script. Less than 10 minutes later, Jorsling dragged a goal back. Momentum in football is a powerful weapon (as Central discovered when they lost a 2-0 lead to W.Connection)and less than two minutes later Josimer Belgrave equalised. Now it really was game on and both teams pushed for the winner. Joseph (I think) hit the post with a cracking shot and Phillip produced more heroics. Players were being stretchered off in all directions as the intensity continued. The game was settled with the exotically named Balondemu Julius finding the net for Army, but there was still 15 minutes of excitement left before Brizan blew his whistle.

Defence Force 3 - 2 Point Fortin

Now, that momentum thing could work for Army who are 10 points behind Connection with 3 games in hand and at least one game to play against Connection. Army are 3 points behind Central with 2 games in hand, while North East are tied with Point Fortin, but have a game in hand. This league could be won by calculators at the end of the season!

Another great night of Pro League football. Coming next this weekend - Lucozade Shield quarter finals (draw takes place tomorrow)

Another busy night of Pro League football and goals galore at Ato Boldon as W.Connection continue to hold top spot while Central F.C. continue their pursuit.

W.Connection 6 - 1 Police F.C.

Not as straightforward as the scoreline appears, but the goals tell the story of Connections ability to fill the onion bag.

Police F.C. are still having their best season for some time, having won 8 of their 19 fixtures before tonight. They started off quite strongly, but their lack of decisive finishing again let them down.
Connection seemed content to rely on their lightning breaks and were camped inside their own half for much of the first 25 minutes. However, it seemed every time that W made a break, they would score. First two goals were both penalties, which looked like the correct decisions and there was a decent call for a third which was declined. The Police captain, who had been booked fairly early in the game committed suicide by Police when he earned a deserved straight red for a late tackle. However, the Cops spirit didn't fade and they managed a token reply.
By half time, the score was 3-1 and, unlike their Lucozade Shield outing on Friday, the Savonetta Boys came out determined to add to their tally. Police continued to fight and the result was not a fair indication of the effort that  they put in, while Connections quality finishing exaggerated the margin of their superiority.

Central F.C. 5 - 1 Caledonia AIA

Another misleading scoreline as Central (who had put 4 past Cale on Friday) seemed to be half a yard short in all areas. Not a convincing performance by The Sharks, but clinical finishing by Plaza was the  key factor. In fact, Plaza should have had his hat trick inside 30 minutes, but he eventually put away his third. Goals from Guerra and Delice flattered the scoreline and Mitchell had a shot that bounced down off the bar but failed to cross the line. Caledonia actually played better than their Friday game and worked hard to contain the multiple threats from Winchester, Plaza, Guerra and Mitchell, with Jamal Jack playing almost as an attacking midfielder. Caledonia's goal came from a very rare mistake by Marshall and Caledonia could have scored a second when Oliver's bad pass fell to the opposition. Still, it's now 15 games unbeaten and 7 straight wins for The Sharks, two records that won't be beaten this season.

All in all, two below par performances from the leagues two top teams, but their ability to score repeatedly explains why they stand head and shoulders above the chasing pack.

Defence Force 3 - 1 Police F.C.

Police started out strong and hit the crossbar twice in first 10 mins. Meanwhile, Sebro had an open goal which he missed with a shot wide enough off target to ensure Coach Russell strips him off his marksman patch in the morning. Army's first goal should result in Police defenders being charged with criminal negligence! Great cross from the right pinpointed Jorsling who was literally squeezed between two Police defenders, while the keeper stayed on his line. Jorslings first touch was sublime and allowed him to slot away the opener. Army's second goal was also the result of sleeping policemen. But, on the whole, the game was fairly even, with Police looking surprisingly sharp on the attack. The boys in blue clawed back a goal before half time. Police fought hard and pushed for an equaliser, but again, were the cause of Army's third goal.
Police could still cause one or two upsets with games against Central and another vs Army on Tuesday. Just depends if they arrive with their SWAT team who could get a result or their white collar crime detectives who just go through the motions without upsetting anybody.

Caledonia 3 - 1 San Juan Jabloteh.

Not a remarkable game aside from a 5 or 6 minute spell in the first half. Both teams started fairly evenly, sparring without too much success until a San Juan jab caught AIA off guard. 1-0 to the green machine. But straight from kick off (and I really mean "straight from kick off"), The Eastern Stallions equalised. A rocket fired goal wards was palmed away by the Jabloteh keeper, straight into the path of another Caledonian and -BANG- the lead lasted for 60 seconds. But worse was to come when Jabloteh lost possession from their kick off and Caledonia scored a carbon copy goal to take the lead. This time, the rocket was so hard it flew between the keepers hands and hit him in the face. The ricochet was pounced on and despite a valiant effort by the keeper (who was probably slightly concussed and had no clue of what he was doing!) the ball was hit home.
You may recall that a couple of weeks ago, Jabloteh's first choice keeper, Shane Mattis fractured his shoulder during a game against W.Connection and had to play on for an hour, as Keith Jeffries had decided not to pack a spare? Tonight, Jabloteh's custodian (don't know his name, but I think he may be the U18 keeper) was injured early on and had 4 or 5 minutes of treatment and, again, there was no reserve keeper on the bench. (Note: If Coach Jeffries offers you a lift in his car, before accepting, check his trunk just in case he's decided not to bring a spare wheel)

The second half was hardly a classic and both teams seemed to cancel each other out. Caledonia scored a third near the end, but if you had left at half time, you wouldn't have been surprised if the game had ended in a draw.

A much needed win for Caledonia and more questions for Jabloteh.

« Reply #297 on: April 15, 2014, 06:21:04 AM »
I would appreciate if someone can clear this up for me.

Defence Force 3—2 Point Fortin Civic
This match was played on April 1st and was listed as a rescheduled match from Round 2 - Match Day 6. Point Fortin already played a Round 2 - Match Day 6 fixture on February 8th against San Juan Jabloteh. How can Point Fortin be assigned two games on one match day?

Defence Force 3—1 Police FC
This match was played on April 13th and was listed as a rescheduled match from Round 2 - Match Day 7. Police already played a Round 2 - Match Day 7 fixture on February 11th against St. Ann’s Rangers. How can Police be assigned two games on one match day?

Mods...please leave for a while before merging

I understand the double header at the Stadium times are now 7 and 9 pm...not 6 and 8pm as advertised  ...

I know is not like 10,000 of us rushing to the games but...just thought i would let you all know.

Rangers vz Cali ( going to keep tabs on young Kadeem Corbin of Rangers)
Central Fc vz NES  ( Tulla Tulla Tulla )

perfect timing...taking a night off from writing my new album...so what a better way to spend the evening...tnt tnt tnt
