Phillips: Sport Ministry has been helpful
By Ian Prescott (Express).

Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) general secretary Sheldon Phillips described as "disappointing" the failure of the Trinidad and Tobago Under-15 football team to compete at the ongoing, inaugural CONCACAF Under-15 championships.

The team were unable to travel to Cayman Islands for the tournament as they were unable to book flights at the last minute, which forced them to pull out of the tournament.

Phillips told the Express yesterday that the Ministry of Sport has supported the TTFA on many occasions.

"Not on the budget and still getting support and being able to go to places like Estonia and Romania.

Getting five matches in preparation for the Gold Cup. Our under-17 women, our under-20 women, and our senior women going on tour in the spread of a summer," he said.

"Yes, we are very disappointed with what has happened with the boys under-15 team, but overall the Ministry of Sport has been very supportive of us."

It is obvious the Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) is not biting the hand that has fed them several times in the past, and continues to feed them.

Only on Thursday, Minister of Sport Anil Roberts described the operations of some National Sporting Organisions (NSOs), including the TTFA, as incompetent. Roberts spoke specifically of the National under-15 football team issue, and presented documents to support his argument.

He specifically accused the TTFA and T&T Hockey Board (TTHB) of submitting very late requests for funding, and then blaming the Ministry for problems encountered.

“We cannot make (up) for the incompetence of officials in NSOs,” the Minister said at a press conference at his Abercromby Street office on Thursday.

Phillips’ response was diplomatic, rather than confrontation. "In spite of the comment (Roberts) made yesterday, I have to look at the entire picture and be sensible and sometimes philosophical," the son of former national goalkeeper and ex-technical director of T&T football Lincoln "Tiger" Phillips  said.

"The Ministry has been very supportive of us on the vast majority of our tours.

“So, as disappointing as the events surrounding the under-15 tournament are, I think people have to be fair and look at the total picture, and look at it with some perspective."

Phillips admitted that much of the TTFA events for 2013 had not been budgeted for. Phillips could not explain why because it was before his May appointment.

He, however, explained that the under-15 tournament was not planned for since it was a new concept that CONCACAF had come up with.

"The tournament was officially announced in June, and the budget was sent in later on in the month, " Phillips said.

"The July 31st submission (which the Minister spoke of) was in regard to our services level package. That was the omnibus package for all of our teams for 2014. The budget specific to the Under-15 tournament would have been sent in later on in June."

Phillips further added that he expected the TTFA's plan to move away from heavy Government funding to bear some fruit by mid-October. He said that there were very promising meetings with several corporate entities, and that some help should be coming to the TTFA when their new budgets are presented later in the year.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

This is why we will always get trample on.

Everyone playing the diplomatic game for their benefit.

I did not expect Sheldon to cuss Anil but why endorse the shit Anil is doing?

As I said, we deserve what we get, everything in T&T is a secret and a cover up.

So all these parents from the Under 15 team and the PanAmerican youth team could stick they tail between they legs and go back in they hole. I wonder if it was a family member affected if they woulda feel de same way. All these parents to spend they money and took time off for their kids lost it all.

Sam, what you want the man to do ? you have to put on your dancing shoes sometimes... The budget should be approved for next year and with the sponsors/corporate T&T getting on board next year should be alot smoother

every other concacaf federation and sports ministry faced the same challenge with the late announcement of that tournament. from refusing funding, refusing stadium use, and training issues, there is a pattern of animosity between sport officials and football administrators. no excuse is acceptable from either the TTFA or MoS.

the ttfa is reaping the rewards for decades of silence and collaboration with warner, and innocents are paying the price. just get your heads out of anil's backside, work hard for sponsorship dollars, and keep my u-15 and u-17 teams in training please!

The Ministry of Sports should have offered some money..while they can't and should not fund all requests like that as it sets a bad precedent some money should have been offered.

Unlike TT, football is their passion. The business community take up the slack after the gov't subventions in those country. So when Concacf make a dotish move, their business with a passion for the sport does chip in. Look how the Panamanian succeeding. I am almost sure the business community pumps more into their national team and their league. And we are supposed to be "richer than them".

The business community in TT are not into football. The don't do it for pro football at least. lil semi-pro etc, yes. They will give uniforms with their business logo. That is as far as it goes. Why Carib can't have a real pro-team. They could build their own stadium in Champs Fleurs. Them is Trini(at least so they say). That steel plant in Central sucking all we gas on the cheap and don't even sponsor a team in Central.

business people want to see tangible returns on investments. they are not obliged to sponsor sports or charity. and if they felt so inclined they would demand transparency and service, not silent, uncooperative administrators.

who would own a team when each game draws 200-500 people max? dead stadiums, no lucrative TV rights, nobody buying t-shirts or merchandise, selling players for chicken feed in the lower tier asian markets, and no prestige or glamour.

without government money the pro-league would fold like wet toilet paper.

for all jack's strong support among the business class, how come there is such a low level of corporate/business sponsorship in the game?

Trinidadians not very used to diplomacy, so many not recognizing the subtle chess move by Phillips.  By contrasting his reaction to the impasse with Roberts' own response he underscores what an emotive jackass Roberts is.  May not mean a whole lot for the moment, but given the over the top reaction by Roberts, I have no doubt that this episode will be filed away for future recall, and at the next impasse Phillips and the TTFA would have bought the benefit of the doubt.

Yuh know... Bakes yuh make meh goh back and read he statement again.. And now dat ah read it under ah calm head, ah realize someting.. He really playing he cyad and dem smart... he soften Anil all d way chroo, but he make sure and state d most important fact, that was actually contrary to what Anil boasts of.... d budget was submitted in June and not at d end of July like Anil pull out paper showing...  and if in fact it was submitted in June, then, dat was ample time for dem to allocate monies...  D one dat was submitted July 31st was for d 2014 budget...  So, maybe dis is passive confrontation on d part of Phillips..

Well done  :applause: :applause: :applause: :applause:

Absolutely Kiffy... he contradict Anil on the main point/s and did so without point a finger or calling a name.  I don't think this will be lost on those of us (the few) watching closely.

Exactly.

Phillips has to conduct himself like a professional for the benefit of his organization, compounded by the fact that there is no longer a JW to bail dem out.

Phillips simply did what any professional would do for the sake of diplomacy and a long term relationship with the MOS.
There's a time for diplomacy and Phillips shows that he's doing his job. Let Anil bluster in public and get some more money from him in the future.
