Canadian men face Dominicans in second leg of World Cup qualifier
Neil Davidson (The Canadian Press).

Members of Dominica''s national men's soccer team practise at BMO Field in Toronto on Monday, June 15, 2015 ahead of their World Cup men’s qualifying match against Canada on Tuesday. Canada won the opening leg last week in Dominica 2-0.

Farmers, fishermen, construction workers, teachers, students and the self-employed. There’s more than just soccer to the men who make up the Dominica national team.

“Most everyone on the team is working,” said coach Shane Marshall, a former midfielder and national team captain whose day job is driving a taxi. “Most of them are self-employed. We have a few guys that are going to school. So it’s kind of difficult to work around.

“Some of them have to say ‘Okay, well coach, I’ll not be able to make it today because I have class. I’ll make it tomorrow.’ ” From their modest home away from home, a two-star hotel in suburban Brampton, the team known as the Nature Boys – due to the natural beauty of Dominica – is hoping to score one for the little guy when it takes on Canada on Tuesday in the return leg of their World Cup qualifying series.

Canada, ranked No. 109 in the world, defeated No. 168 Dominica 2-0 last before some 6,000 fans on Thursday in the Caribbean island located halfway between Puerto Rico and Trinidad and Tobago.

The Dominica players, dressed in a lime green tops, took a moment to take in BMO Field on Monday before the match commissioner let them on the pristine field for their one-hour practice.

“It’s a lovely playing field. It’s conducive to playing good football,” goalkeeper and captain Glenson Prince, who was a standout in the first leg, said admiringly.

The series opener was played on a somewhat less hospitable cricket pitch in Roseau. Canada went ahead on a fifth-minute goal by Orlando City forward Cyle Larin. Vancouver Whitecaps midfielder Russell Teibert made it 2-0 on a 63rd-minute penalty after Larin was pulled down.

Canadian coach Benito Floro, while not complaining, thought Canada could have scored more.

“Everyone’s going to think it’s a walk in the park,” Canadian captain Julian de Guzman said of Dominica. “But these teams, they’re very tricky. You can’t take them lightly at any moment. They’re very physical, fast players and they’re playing for a World Cup too. They believe they can make it.

“We cannot judge these guys on rankings or where they’re from. So we’re not taking it any different than it would be if we were to play Panama in Panama or [play] the U.S.”

Canada will be without goalkeeper Milan Borjan, red-carded late in the game for handling the ball outside the penalty box.

“A lot of persons didn’t give us a chance coming into the game because of the [FIFA] rankings and what not,” Prince said. “But we watched a lot of tapes of the Canadians. We were confident coming into the [home] game and we are confident going into this game because we can believe that if we can improve on our performance we can turn that 2-0 deficit around.”

So a Dominica win is possible?

“Definitely. If not we wouldn’t be here right now,” said the 27-year-old ’keeper.

Prince is currently without a club after his contract with a team in Trinidad and Tobago ran out. Two of his teammates play semi-pro in Trinidad while the rest play for clubs at home.

Prince teaches physical education at a secondary school in Dominica, whose population numbers some 73,500 – about the same as Sarnia, Ont.

While Dominica stays at a hotel with a complimentary continental breakfast near the airport after commercial flights to Antigua and then Toronto, the fully professional Canadian side travelled south by chartered plane and stayed in a hotel featuring a fully equipped dive shop, its own jetty, rooftop Jacuzzis, infinity pool, gymnasium and spa.

Dominica beat the British Virgin Islands in a two-legged playoff in the first round of World Cup qualifying in the CONCACAF region, which covers North and Central America and the Caribbean.

The 10 second-round winners move on to the third round where they will be joined by Jamaica and Haiti for another home-and-away series.

The six winners will join the top six teams in the confederation – Costa Rica, the U.S., Mexico, Honduras, Panama and Trinidad and Tobago – in the penultimate stage which will see round-robin play in three groups. The top two in each group will advance to the final hexagonal round-robin.

The top three will qualify directly for the 2018 World Cup in Russia with the fourth-place team having a chance to join them via a playoff.

So Canada, in its quest for only its second ever World Cup qualification, could have at least 18 more games to go if it wins Tuesday.

“It’s a long journey, a lot of games ahead of us,” de Guzman said.

With the domestic soccer spotlight on the Women’s World Cup, the Canadian men are flying under the radar.

With no TV network interested, Tuesday’s game is being streamed on the Internet. Monday’s practices drew one reporter.

Bermuda 0 Guatemala 1: Cincotta sends visitors through
FourFourTwo.com

Stefano Cincotta's first international goal sent Guatemala into the third round of CONCACAF's World Cup qualifying.

Guatemala defeated Bermuda 1-0 in World Cup qualifying to advance, as defender Stefano Cincotta struck his maiden goal at international level.

Having been held to a scoreless draw at home in the first leg of the tie, Guatemala prevailed at the Bermuda National Stadium in Hamilton on Monday to claim a spot in CONCACAF's third round of qualifying.

Cincotta, who plays club football for Chemnitzer FC in Germany's third tier, scored in the 27th minute, overlapping down the left before firing the ball across Bermuda goalkeeper Dale Eve and inside the far post.

The result ended Bermuda's unbeaten run at seven games, with the Caribbean nation tasting defeat for the first time in 2015.

Grenada and Puerto Rico played to a 2-0 result today in the second leg of CONCACAF Second Round qualifying. The Grenadians were true to their word that they would overhaul Puerto Rico's 1-0 home victory. Aggregate score 2-1. Grenada moves on to the next round of qualifying.

I thought that Suriname was better. Weren't they supposed to  get access to a pool of  Dutch born players?

From what I gather, those players were not incorporated ... or better put, have not been incorporated yet. Requires legislation to pass

Canada downs Dominica 4-0 in World Cup qualifier
Neil Davidson (The Canadian Press).

TORONTO -- Tesho Akindele scored his first international goal and set up one of two Tosaint Ricketts goals as Canada dispatched Dominica 4-0 Tuesday for a 6-0 aggregate win over the Caribbean minnow in the first stop on the Canadian men's 2018 World Cup qualifying journey.

Canada, ranked 109th in the world, dominated the part-timers from No. 168 Dominica before an announced crowd of 9,749 on a pleasant, breezy 20-plus-degree night at BMO Field. A contingent of green-clad Dominica fans in the north stand did their best to cheer on the visitors whose roster included fishermen, construction workers and students.

Cyle Larin also scored for Canada, which could have padded its lead. Dominica goalie Glenson Prince saved a David Edgar penalty after a handball early in the second half and Canada's Jonathan Osorio hit the goalpost in the 89th minute.

It was Canada's first four-goal performance since a 4-0 victory over St. Kitts and Nevis in November 2011 in World Cup qualifying.

Benito Floro's team will find out who it faces next in qualifying at the July 25 World Cup preliminary draw in St. Petersburg. Canada, whose only World Cup appearance came in 1986, has at least 18 more games to go if it is to be successful in its bid to represent CONCACAF, which covers North and Central America and the Caribbean, in Russia in 2018.

The play of Larin, a native of Brampton, Ont. taken first overall in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft by Orlando City, and Calgary-born Akindele, MLS rookie of the year in 2014 for FC Dallas, bodes well for future challenges.

Canada went into the game up 2-0 from the first leg and wasted little time trying to add to its margin, testing Prince from all angles and distances. The Dominica 'keeper faced 14 shots, 11 on target in the first half alone.

At times, Canadian players lined up to have a go at goal.

Akindele, in his second national team appearance, opened his account for Canada in the fourth minute by hammering home a right-footed shot from the edge of the penalty box.

The Canadian defence was split open by a fine through ball in the 23rd minute but Kenny Stamatopoulos stopped Randolph Peltier's shot.

Larin, who had taken some punishment from a physical Dominica defence, pivoted outside the penalty box before curling a shot past Prince in the 41st minute. Larin has now scored in three straight games for Canada.

Ricketts made it 3-0 in the 52nd minute, tapping home a low cross beautifully delivered by Akindele before chipping home an Osorio through ball in the 77th minute for his 10th goal for Canada.

Canada made four changes from the team that won the opening leg 2-0 last Thursday in Dominica on goals by Larin and Russell Teibert. Stamatopoulos came in for the suspended Milan Borjan in goal with Edgar joining Toronto FC's Ashtone Morgan and Osorio in the starting 11.

Teibert, Karl Ouimette and Manjrekar James moved to the bench.

Canada, which skipped the first round of CONCACAF qualifying, will be joined in the third round of CONCACAF qualifying by Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Belize, Curacao, Guatemala, Grenada, Nicaragua, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and either El Salvador or St. Kitts and Nevis.

Those 10 second-round winners join Jamaica and Haiti -- the seventh- and eight-seeded teams in the region -- in six home-and-away series to be played Aug. 21 to Sept. 8.

The winners advance to Round 4 joining the six top-ranked teams: Costa Rica, Mexico, U.S., Honduras, Panama and Trinidad and Tobago. Those 12 teams will be placed in three round-robin groups, playing from November to September 2016, with the top two from each pool advancing to the final round.

The final six teams will face off in the CONCACAF hexagonal, to be played from November 2016 to October 2017. The top three in the group will advance directly to the World Cup with the fourth country taking part in an intercontinental playoff.

Dominica, whose population of 73,500 is roughly that of Sarnia, Ont., advanced to the second round by beating the 194th-ranked British Virgin Islands 3-2 on aggregate.

Dominica is located about halfway between Puerto Rico and Trinidad and Tobago.
