All hail Pescado Ruiz, the recordbreaker

All hail Ruiz, the record breaker
FIFA.com

Carlos Ruiz will always remember 6 September 2016. After all, how could the Guatemalan forget the day on which he not only won his last cap for his country, whom he represented proudly for 18 years, but also became the leading goalscorer in FIFA World Cup™ qualifying history?

By grabbing five goals in Guatemala's 9-3 victory over St. Vincent and the Grenadines, in the final set of fixtures in the fourth round of North, Central America and Caribbean Zone qualifying for the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia, the seasoned striker took his tally in World Cup preliminaries to 39, surpassing former Iranian international Ali Daei's previous record of 35.

It is true that this emphatic win was not enough to take Guatemala into the Hexagonal, the final stage of CONCACAF qualifying. However, no one can deny that the Los Chapines captain did everything in his power to try to lead his country to the global extravaganza for the first time.

The forward, who is on the verge of turning 37, made his international debut on 18 November 1998. He went on to score eight goals in Korea/Japan 2002 qualifying, ten on the road to Germany 2006, six in the South Africa 2010 preliminaries, a further six in the battle to reach Brazil 2014 and nine in Russia 2018 qualifying.

El Pescadito (The Little Fish), as he is widely known, racked up his historic tally in 47 qualifiers, compared to the 55 in which Daei managed his tally. In all he scored 68 goals in 133 appearances in a Guatemala shirt.

Ruiz, who is currently without a club but intends to continue playing professionally, gave the following explanation regarding his decision to retire from international football: "I feel full of nostalgia when I look back to the beginning, but this is the right time to call it quits. I have to be sensible: I'm almost 37 and I know that I can contribute more off the pitch."

Having bowed out with five goals in front of his adoring fans, claiming a world record in the process, the veteran's send-off was certainly the stuff that dreams are made of.

Records fall across the globe
FIFA.com

A kid making national history in Kingstown and a veteran making global history in Guatemala City highlight FIFA.com’s latest statistical review, as well two on-song European superstars and the fall of defensive impregnability.

54 FIFA World Cup™ qualifiers without defeat is the stupendous sequence Spain are on following an 8-0 thrashing of Liechtenstein. La Roja last lost 1-0 in Denmark in March 1993, and have since won 42 and drawn 12 matches. Monday’s result left Spain having scored 31 times and conceded zero in seven meetings with Liechtenstein – all victories. David Silva’s doubles in that game and its preceding warm-up – a 2-0 win in Belgium – took him above Emilio Butragueno and Fernando Morientes into fifth on Spain’s list of leading marksmen. The 28-goal playmaker now trails only David Villa (59), Raul (44), Fernando Torres (38) and Fernando Hierro (29).

17 years and 349 days old was the age at which Christian Pulisic became the youngest USA player to score in World Cup qualifying on Friday. The Hershey, Pennsylvania native rose from the bench in the 67th minute and took just four minutes to put the Stars and Stripes 4-0 up away to St. Vincent and the Grenadines. The Borussia Dortmund forward then helped Jurgen Klinsmann’s side thump Trinidad and Tobago 4-0 on Tuesday – a match in which Tim Howard outranked Kasey Keller as the top-appearing American in World Cup qualifiers.

13 hours and 44 minutes without conceding in World Cup qualifying was the run that came to an end for Korea Republic on Thursday. Since Reza Ghoochannejhad’s unanswered goal earned Iran victory in Ulsan in 2013, the Taeguk Warriors kept eight consecutive clean sheets and, 3-0 up at home to China PR with little over 15 minutes remaining, appeared cruising towards a ninth. Yu Hai’s 74th-minute effort reduced the deficit, however, before Hao Junmin left the South Koreans hanging on. That they nevertheless did to win a ninth successive World Cup qualifier. That national-record run came to an end as Korea Republic and Syria finished goalless on Tuesday.

9 hours and 40 minutes: that is how long Luxembourg had gone without scoring against Bulgaria until Aurelien Joachim’s equaliser on the hour on Tuesday. Another leveller, this time from Florian Bohnert in stoppage time, meant Luxembourg netted three goals in a World Cup qualifier for only the fourth time since their first preliminary in 1934, and appeared to have earned them an historic draw in Sofia. However, Aleksandar Tonev’s even later goal snatched a success that maintained Bulgaria’s 100 per cent record in 13 instalments of the fixture.

7 goals in what could be his last two Guatemala games is what Carlos Ruiz sensationally hit to become the leading marksman in World Cup qualifying history. The 36-year-old bagged both his nation’s goals in a 2-2 draw away to Trinidad and Tobago on Friday, before posting five in the 9-3 rout of St. Vincent and the Grenadines on Tuesday. It left Ruiz on 39 goals in 47 World Cup preliminaries, three more than previous record-holder – Iran’s Ali Daei. If, as he all but confirmed before the latter match, Ruiz does retire from Guatemala duty, he will do so as the joint-15th all-time highest scorer in international football with 68 goals in 133 appearances.

Quick hits
139 matches is what Joachim Low reached against Norway to go joint-second on Germany’s list of record coaches, alongside Helmut Schon and shy of Sepp Herberger (169).

33 years is how long Brazil had gone without winning away to Ecuador until a 3-0 victory on Thursday. A Seleção had last beaten La Tricolor in their own backyard thanks to an unanswered Roberto Dinamite goal at the 1983 Copa America.

10 goals in his last 13 starts for Wales have rocketed Gareth Bale to second on Wales’ list of top scorers, four behind 28-goal Ian Rush.

CONMEBOL: Uruguay back on top, Brazil on the rise
FIFA.com

The Day Replayed
Uruguay eased to victory over Paraguay and made the most of Argentina’s draw in Venezuela to retake the lead in the South American qualifying competition for the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™.

The other side to make a significant move on Matchday 8 were Brazil, who edged out Colombia at home to climb up to second place in the table, ahead of the Argentinians and Colombians, who complete the four automatic qualification places.

Ecuador, who went down to a Peru side in desperate need of points, lie fifth. Neither Chile, who were held to a draw at home by Bolivia, nor Paraguay could take advantage of the Ecuadorians’ latest slip-up and remain outside the qualification places. FIFA.com rounds up Tuesday’s action.

Match of the day
Brazil 2-1 Colombia
BRA: Miranda 2, Neymar 74; COL: Marquinhos 36 o.g.

Despite failing to sparkle, Brazil recorded a second consecutive win under new coach Tite and moved into the thick of the battle for the automatic qualification places. Miranda’s early goal pointed to a comfortable night for the hosts, though Colombia had other ideas and pulled level in fortunate fashion.

The visitors pushed for a winner, but it was Brazil who claimed it, with Neymar scoring with a left-footed drive to give A Canarinha their first qualifying win over Los Cafeteros since 2003, when they recorded a 2-1 win en route to Germany 2006. The result ended a run of three straight victories for the Colombians in the competition, though they remain in the top four.

Elsewhere
Uruguay reclaimed top spot in the table with an impressive showing against Paraguay. La Celeste were three goals to the good at the break, thanks to strikes from Edinson Cavani, Luis Suarez and Cristian Rodriguez. Cavani scored a second after the restart to complete an emphatic win for the Uruguayans and take to four the number of games they have gone without defeat to La Albirroja in World Cup qualifying matches. Los Charrúas also maintained their perfect record at the Estadio Centenario in Montevideo, where they have scored 11 goals in winning all four of their games to date and have yet to concede.

Argentina needed a second-half revival to scrape a point against Venezuela in Merida. Juan Pablo Anor and Josef Martinez had the Vinotinto fans out of their seats with goals either side of half-time, only for Lucas Pratto and Nicolas Otamendi to pop up and secure a 2-2 draw for the visitors. It was only the second time that La Albiceleste have managed to come from two goals down to earn a point in a qualifying match, the first having come in 2001, when they drew 3-3 with Bolivia in La Paz.

Chile and Bolivia failed to find the target in a goalless draw in Santiago that does neither of them much good. La Roja have now gone three games without a win at home, their worst run in the qualifiers since the Germany 2006 campaign, when they went winless in Santiago for five games. Their biggest concern at the moment, however, is that they lie outside the qualification places. The Bolivians are also well out of the picture, but can at least console themselves with the fact that they avoided a seventh straight qualifying defeat to the Chileans.

In the day’s final game, Peru registered a vital 2-1 defeat of Ecuador in Lima. Christian Cueva, from the penalty spot, and Renato Tapia were the men on the scoresheet for the hosts, who had gone winless in their previous four Russia 2018 qualifiers. Gabriel Achilier headed home in between times for the Ecuadorians, who have collected one point from their last four games and have lost their last three, their first such run in World Cup qualifiers since 2007. Michael Arroyo’s sending-off completed a miserable night for La Tri.

Player of the day
Luis Suarez (Uruguay): El Pistolero had an evening to remember against Paraguay. As well as setting up Cavani for his brace, Suarez won a penalty that he converted for his second goal of the Russia 2018 campaign. It was a strike that took the Uruguayan level with Marcelo Salas as the second-highest goalscorer in the history of South American qualifying competitions with 18, just one behind former Argentinian front man Hernan Crespo.

Did you know?
Argentina usually struggle when Lionel Messi is absent, and they did so again against Venezuela in Merida. La Albiceleste have won all three of their games in which Lío has appeared in the current campaign. In the other five games without him, however, they have collected only six points, registering a win, three draws and a defeat.
