Was scoring 18 necessary?

yeah, if yuh receiving it and dont like it then put a stop to it.

So, would you be aboard with 40, if they could score 40?

there is a reason for scoring plenty goals....ask Carapichaima about that.

If we are honest, the title came down to the head to head between Caps and Chag North, rather than on who prevailed comparatively in trouncing Vishnu Boys ... if you can score 18 and still find yourself reliant on goal difference to put you over the top, you're not my champion.

well your mind and the rules are obviously different....i realize you just like to disagree.  the bottom line is goal difference plays a role so the goal should always be to score as many as posisble.  you sounding like those americans who talk about running up the score.

... I would agree if the facts were different.

(Caps went into that final game (or should have gone into that game knowing what they needed to do walk away with the title ... ultimately, the decisive goal was the goal that put Chag North a goal up in that final game. Also, to just state things would have been different had Caps scored a 19th v. Vishnu ... is to discount the 2nd goal Chag North scored versus Caps in the first leg in their 3-2 loss).

If you think that I'm contending merely about the value of an additional goal in a goal difference regime, you're wrong.

By the way, Americans talk about running up the score for a variety of reasons ... in the context of collegiate ball in the US, running up the score is frowned upon because goal difference typically isn't the deciding factor in resolving tiebreaker situations. In many conferences that comes down to head to head analysis as the first tiebreaker.

Pres tackle Speyside in SSFL Big Five.
By Roger Seepersad (Express).

The BG T&T/First Citizens Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Big Five kicks off today with South Zone champions Presentation College San Fernando taking on Tobago winners Speyside High School in the feature match of a double-header at Skinner Park, San Fernando.

The showdown is a quarter-final match-up, and will kick off at five p.m. It will be preceded by the Girls’ Big Four semi-final clash between South Zone winners Fyzabad Secondary and Tobago champions Bishop’s High School, Tobago. The Big Four match starts at three p.m.

Action in both competitions continues on Wednesday with another double-header at Larry Gomes Stadium in Malabar, where the best North Zone boys and girls teams will come up against the best the East Zone has to offer.

At two p.m., Bishop’s Anstey High School, who won their first North Zone title this season, take on St Augustine Secondary in a Girls’ Big Four semi-final.

That match will be followed by the Boys’ Big Five semi-final, starting at four p.m., featuring North Zone winners St Mary’s College and East Zone champions St Augustine Secondary.

The other Big Five semi is scheduled for Thursday at Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva, between the Central Zone champions Chaguanas North Secondary and the winners of today’s clash between Pres San Fernando and Speyside.

However, Thursday’s game is still in doubt after questions were raised over the eligibility of two players used by Chaguanas North in their 2013 campaign.

The SSFL officials will meet today to make a determination on that matter, and depending on their decision, second-placed Central Zone team Carapichaima East Secondary could be elevated to the top spot.

Carapichaima East and Chaguanas North finished on the same number of points after the regular season, with the latter taking the top spot based on a superior goal difference.

The Big Four and Big Five finals take place next Monday, but the venue for those matches is still to be decided.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Presentation, Speyside in Big-Five opener.
By Andrew Gioannetti (Guardian)

Finalist in last year’s competition, Presentation College of San Fernando will meet first ever Tobago Zone league winner Speyside Secondary, when the BGTT First Citizens Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Big-Five competition kicks off today with a lone play-off match for a spot in the semifinal.

The fixture will kick off at 5 pm, at Skinner Park, San Fernando, in the second match of a double-header, which is set to open with a Girls’ Big-Four clash between surprise South Zone champion, Fyzabad Secondary and familiar Tobago outfit, Bishop’s High School, from 3 pm.

The second semifinal of the girls’ competition will be played on Wednesday between North Zone winner, Bishop’s Anstey (Port-of-Spain) and East Zone powerhouse St Augustine Secondary, at the Larry Gomes Stadium, Arima.

Today’s Boys’ clash is set to provide sparks with one team, Presentation College of San Fernando seeking a return to the final and ultimately the title, and Speyside, aiming to prove its worth with a hoard of capable midfielders and forwards, including Marcus Caesar, Weah Adams, Brandon Benjamin, Simeon Skeete and others.

Presentation, which has been sound defensively and potent in attack remains with its top scorer last season, Shackiel Henry, as well as the in-form Anjel Williams. The team, coached by fellow T&T Under-17 headman Shawn Cooper, lost the Big-Five final last season in a 4-3 thriller to Carapichaima East Secondary.

The winner of today’s match will book a place in the semifinal against Central’s new champion, Chaguanas North in a fixture scheduled for Thursday, at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva.

Meanwhile, the other semifinal is set for Wednesday, between St Mary’s College (North Zone), which has made a return for the first time since 2009, and St Augustine Secondary, the most dominant school in the SSFL this season, which was held to only one draw, while winning all other league matches. The final is carded for November 4, at a venue to be determined.

Today’s Fixtures

Girls’ Big-Four semifinal

Fyzabad Secondary v Bishop’s (Tobago), Skinner Park, 3 pm

Boys’ Big-Five quarterfinal

Presentation College of San Fernando v Speyside Secondary, Skinner Park, 5 pm

Wednesday

Girls’ Big-Four semifinal

Bishops’s (PoS) v St Augustine, Larry Gomes Stadium, 2 pm

Boys’ Big-Five semifinal

St Mary’s College v St Augustine Secondary, Larry Gomes Stadium, 4 pm

Bishop’s Tobago into first national girls final.
T&T Express Reports.

Bishop’s Secondary, in their second foray into the BGT&T/First Citizens Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Girls “Big Four”, are now into the national final after a hard-fought win over Fyzabad Secondary yesterday from the penalty spot.

Kerrisha Simon, Lakita Hall and Player-of-the-Match Krystal Taylor each scored from the spot after a 0-0 regulation scoreline forced the shootout.

“Fyzo’s” Shaminka Rocastle was the only player for the new South champions to beat Bishop’s goalkeeper Nafeisha Radgman, meaning her team’s League campaign has ended.

The first portion of the encounter was played under a strong downpour that forced the teams off the field. After a significant stoppage the girls returned to the pitch, but struggled with their passing and shooting due to a swampy outfield.

Fyzabad had to overcome some late pressure, but made it to the shootout.

And after their triumph, Bishop’s will play the winners between St Augustine Secondary of East Zone and North champs Bishop’s Anstey of Port of Spain in tomorrow’s semi at Larry Gomes Stadium in Malabar from 2 p.m.

Five-Star Pres whip Speyside.
By Kern De Freitas (Express).

Presentation College San Fernando cruised into the BGT&T/First Citizens Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) “Big Five” semi-finals yesterday, taking full advantage of their “home” pitch at Skinner Park, San Fernando to beat debutants Speyside Secondary 5-0.

It was a regular day at the office for “Pres”, as the returning South champions sprinted out to a 2-0 halftime lead in the quarter-final. Speyside never looked like challenging. In the end, Pres won at a canter.

The southerners will now face either Carapichaima East Secondary or Chaguanas North Secondary, pending the outcome of the protest launched by “Caps” over the eligibility of Chaguanas’s players.

Pres was the only side that adjusted to the muddy conditions at Skinner Park that followed earlier afternoon showers, and they were able to make more of the space on a field smaller than Speyside’s usual playing grounds.

The Tobago champions did well to absorb early pressure by Pres and look for the counter attack, but just weren’t sharp enough to take advantage of what little they created. It didn’t help that Speyside’s regular custodian, Mackenzie Denoon, was injured when Pres opened the scoring, leaving the hapless Jellies Coker to collect the other four.

Shackiel Henry scored the first item in the 24th minute, dancing through two defenders and blasting past Denoon, who left soon after with what looked like a shoulder injury.

In the 41st, Jared Gordon doubled the lead with a vicious shot under the roof of the net from an angle on the left.

The goals kept coming in the second half for Pres. Coker twice kept out Henry, but couldn’t stop Kouri Cupid from slamming home after Angel Williams left his marker for dead on the right and played a pinpoint pass to Cupid in the 71st.

Williams himself wrapped it up with close range efforts that sealed a win that was never in doubt.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Anyone know the real score for the GIRLS big 5 game yesterday...

The Express say Bishop’s Secondary beat Fyzabad Secondary and into the final and the T&T Guardian saying its the other way around.

Second Big 5 semi still on tomorrow.
T&T Express Reports.

Tomorrow’s BG T&T/First Citizens Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) “Big Five” semi-final between Presentation College San Fernando and the Central Zone champions will go ahead as scheduled, even though “Pres” do not yet know who their opponents will be.

The San Fernando school earned their trip to the semis with an easy 5-0 semi-final win over Tobago Zone winners Speyside Secondary at Skinner Park on Monday.

But although Chaguanas North Secondary have been given the nod as Central Zone champs after they beat Carapichaima East Secondary on goal difference last week, a protest by “Caps” surrounding the alleged illegal use of players by Chaguanas to secure the title has stymied their chance at a first trip to the Big Five. If Carapichaima’s protest is successful, they will win Central once more and face Presentation.

It is not the first time Carapichaima have stalled Chaguanas’s title bid via protest. Last year’s Chaguanas’s first round 2-1 defeat of the perennial Central champs was quashed after protest by Caps, on the grounds that goalkeeper John Rodney was ineligible.

Rodney trained with Caps in the off-season, but was barred from playing due to his CXC results, following which he went to Chaguanas North.

The latest disciplinary matter has been drawn out, but is expected to conclude tomorrow according to Gerard Elliot, the SSFL assistant secretary and member of the disciplinary committee, who said the League is still “awaiting some information”.

The match should go ahead as planned tomorrow at Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva, with the winners of that contest and victors between St Mary’s College and St Augustine Secondary—who face off today at Larry Gomes Stadium, Malabar from 4 p.m.—set to meet in Monday’s final.

Today will also see East girls champs St Augustine and their North Zone counterparts Bishop’s Anstey High School (Port of Spain) clashing at Malabar from 2 p.m., two hours before the boys’ encounter.

Saints, Green Machine battle in Big Five semis.
By Kern De Freitas (Express).

Consistency versus audacity; structure against creativity; accomplishment meeting ambition. Any of those descriptions would fit today’s BG T&T/First Citizens Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) “Big Five” semi-final match-up that will see St Augustine Secondary’s “Green Machine” taking on the “Saints” of St Mary’s College.

“Gustine” roll out today at Larry Gomes Stadium, Malabar, the only unbeaten team in the 2013 season, after Speyside Secondary were humbled 5-0 by Presentation College San Fernando at Skinner Park, San Fernando on Monday.

Only El Dorado West Secondary, known as “El Do Brown”, have been able to keep out the rampant St Augustine strikers this season, and take points off the East Zone champions with a 0-0 result. For St Mary’s, their hopes of winning their first national league title in 22 years hinge upon stopping St Augustine’s super streak.

St Mary’s have had a more challenging season, with one loss and two draws en route to the title. But the North Zone has been the most competitive of the 2013 SSFL, and so, could quite likely have made it the perfect preparation for what seems an uphill battle.

The other ingredient that makes this encounter an exciting prospect is the fact that the last time St Mary’s progressed from the North in 2009, they faced the same opponents at the same venue, and put up a fierce, but ultimately futile battle in the first half before the “Green Machine” sped away with it 2-0.

It is a memory that motivates St Mary’s coach Jason Edwards all the more. His more seasoned opposite number Michael Grayson will be more focused on ensuring a talented squad lives up to its full potential against a team they met in the pre-season and drew with 3-3.

St Mary’s

Edwards is proud of his team’s achievements since it returned to the Championship Division, having been relegated at the end of 2006. Since then, the school has taken strides in the North, culminating in two zonal titles. His team, he believes, can compete with any of the other Big Five contenders. He is expecting regulation time goals from an offence-minded  St Augustine and his strong defensive team.

“(We will have to rely on) our ability to contain their attack and take advantage of any opportunities that come our way. We’re not too shabby in attack [ourselves], and we’ve been scoring quite regularly. Once we create enough opportunities I think we can win.”

St Augustine

Andre Moses, manager of St Augustine, said his team is “quietly confident”. This year, a team with its core from last year is neatly interspersed with formerly under-16 talent. This has paid dividends, he explained, adding that the team and the entire technical staff have worked very hard to achieve what they have so far.

“All the teams in the competition are championship teams,” Moses said, “so we won’t be taking anybody for granted.”

In the last nine years, St Augustine have secured four Big Five titles, and numerous zonal League and InterCol wins. Still missing is a national InterCol crown in that period, which they hope to change this year. Only one match is on their minds at the moment, though.

“Right now we have to focus on this semi-final,” Moses stated.

Tried to go to the game, but left town late and was stuck in traffic. It was difficult following the commentary on radio. Ruskin Mark was horrible. Didn't update the time gone in the match, didn't update the scores regularly (we tuned in late and had to wait almost 10 minutes for the score update) and didn't describe the action with any detail. We're so accustomed to tv commentary these days that radio commentators forget that their audience cannot see what is happening so they need to be more descriptive and give updates more regularly.

Saints through to Big-Five finale.
By Andrew Gioannetti (Guardian).

St Mary’s College and its lively traveling support made its trip to the Larry Gomes Stadium in Malabar, Arima, count yesterday, when it persevered against the most dangerous threat in schools’ football, St Augustine Secondary, in a goalless stalemate before taking a 6-5 win from the penalty spot to advance to the final of the BGTT First Citizens Secondary Schools Football League.

The Saints were resilient, soaking up constant attacking threat late on from this year’s best team in league competition, including that from its topscorer Ricardo John, who had a night to forget after missing several clear cut chances.

In the end, it was a converted sudden death kick from Chinua Bernard, and a subsequent save from a massive Christian Attong in goal for St Mary’s, which sent the roaring supporters into a frenzy.

The win earned St Mary’s a spot in Monday’s final against either Presentation College of San Fernando or Carapichaima East Secondary. The latter two schools will contest the second semifinal at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva, from 5 pm, today.

To put the icing on the Saints’ cake, St Mary’s effectively exacted revenge against the same team it lost to (2-0) in the Big-Five semifinal, back in 2009, the last time St Mary’s won the North Zone league title.

St Augustine would have felt slighted by the result after having the best opportunity to win the match outright, particularly after the league’s leading goalscorer, John, who minutes left in regulation time, danced around a host of St Mary’s defenders and had just the keeper to beat but popped his tame effort into Attong’s hands.

Mackesie Quashie, a stocky defender for the Green Machine, also had a good chance with a distant free-kick but his driven effort in the first period, which may well have had Attong beaten, sizzled mere inches away from the goal.

St Mary’s through its top forward, Bernard, had a pair of chances to open the scoring for his team, which enjoyed greater possession in the first half. He missed an open net at full stretch midway through the first half after connecting with a right-sided cross from Aaron Noel. Noel also almost had his team in front when he smashed a free kick, goal-bound but the St Augustine custodian tipped it onto the crossbar.

The consolation for St Augustine is it remains the only undefeated championship team in all competition this season. Prior to yesterday’s Big-Five match, the Green Machine ended its league campaign with one draw, no losses and the rest, wins.

Pres, Caps clash in other semis today

In a replay of last year’s final, South Zone champion Presentation College and defending champion Carapichaima East will clash in the second semifinal match from 5 pm.

Only yesterday a verdict was reached as to which school from the Central Zone, Chaguanas North Secondary or Carapichaima East, would participate in the semifinal.

The SSFL, upon receiving a complaint on the fielding of one of Chaguanas North’s players during league matches by another team in the Central Zone, investigated and agreed that Chaguanas North fielded an ineligible player. The SSFL, as a result, deemed Carapichaima East, which originally lost the title on the final round of league action to Chaguanas North, the league champion, thus awarding it a place in the Big-Five semifinal.

When asked why the player was ineligible, Azaad Mohammed-Khan, general secretary of the SSFL said he would prefer not to divulge more information as he was unsure if the principal of Chaguanas North was aware of the sanction. He said once the principal acknowledges a letter issuing the SSFL’s decision, he would issue a media release giving more details.

Today’s second semifinal is expected to provide thrills with Presentation College seeking revenge after losing out of the Big-Five trophy, following a 1-0 defeat by Caps, in last year’s final. The winner will meet St Mary’s College in Monday’s finale.

Yesterday’s Results

St Mary’s College 0 v St Augustine Secondary 0
-St Mary’s won 6-5 via kicks from the penalty spot.

Saints into Big 5 final
Green Machine lose for the first time this season...
By Ian Prescott (Express).

St Augustine Secondary boys lost their first match of the season but only beaten 6-5 on sudden-death penalty kicks.

This, after yesterday’s BG T&T/First Citizens Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) “Big Five” semi-final match-up against St Mary’s College ended in a 0-0 draw yesterday evening at Larry Gomes Stadium, Arima.

Yesterday’s semi was tame by any standard. The first half ended without any of the goals promised by “Saints” coach Jason Edwards a day earlier, and without much action, as play took place mainly in the middle of the park.

However, the North champions St Mary’s could still boast of having the two best chances of the half, both turned wide by striker Chinua Bernard in quick succession, half hour into the match. St Augustine keeper Romario Romain also had a nervous situation just before the half ended when taking a looping ball just before it entered his goal.

St Augustine offered little going forward in the first half, but could have been ahead early when a St Mary’s college defender stuck out a leg and almost turned the ball past’ keeper Christian Attong.

Facing a better organised team, St Augustine changed tactics and began looking better in the second half. The Green Machine defended in numbers and also had solid work from centre-back Makesi Quashie.

They also tried to catch the Saint up field when counter attacking with pace, and using the speed of national youth players Aikim Andrews and Akeem Garcia.

St Augustine almost had something to shout about in the 65th when striker Ricardo John isolated himself with keeper Attong by stealing the ball, when one of the Saint players over indulged.

John attempted to go around Attong, but the very capable Saint keeper did remarkably well to grab the ball. The very tall John again found himself racing towards Attong when the ball was kicked long into the CIC half, but Attong got to there first.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

7th heaven for St Augustine girls
By Ian Prescott (Express).

North champs Bishop’s Anstey High School Port of Spain were no match for St Augustine Secondary, who got a first half hat-trick from Laurelle Theodore to win their one-sided BGT&T/First Citizens Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Girls’ “Big-Four” semi-final 7-0 yesterday at Larry Gomes Stadium, Arima.

On Monday, St Augustine will meet newly-crowned South league champions Fyzabad Secondary, who advanced to the final with a 3-1 penalty shootout victory over Tobago winners Bishop’s High School, following a 0-0 draw in the opening semi-final on Monday.

Striker Theodore was a terror and netted a total four goals yesterday, before she was substitute in the 69th with the match already well wrapped up. The contest was essentially over by the end of the first half with the “Green Machine” leading by four unanswered goals.

Theodore completed the hat-trick by end of the first half, the best of her three goals saw her race past her marker in the box, before putting the ball low past Bishop’s ‘keeper Whitney Griffith for St Augustine’s fourth goal in the 37th minute. Theodore opened the scoring in the 17th, and also put in a free-kick with her knee for her second in the 30th. Ana Williams also netted for Gustine in the 22nd to make the score 2-0 at that stage.

St Augustine kept up the pressure in the second half, but Bishop’s put up a better fight. Theodore eventually broke them again with her fourth goal in the 61st, when beating the Griffith to the ball.

With Theodore off, St Augustine did not have quite the same bite up front, but still got two more goals, as Bishop’s also gave their second goalie a run. Ke’die Johnson headed in a corner-kick in the 73rd to make it 6-0 and Niaomee Guerra beat the substitute Bishop’s keeper Rowaldo James from long range for a seventh in the 80th minute.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

What was the procedure ... did the penalties immediately follow regulation time?

Again, the Express is saying that Fyzabad Secondary progress and it was instead Bishop's Tobago.
