Trinidad and Tobago’s female national hockey team edged Guyana 1-0 yesterday to rebound from a 12-0 whipping by the hosts Argentina on Saturday at the fourth Pan American Cup in Mendoza, Argentina.

In their second match yesterday evening, T&T gained three valuable points to be in third place in Pool A behind Argentina and Canada.

An own goal in the fourth minute secured the win for T&T against their Caribbean counterparts at the Mendocino Hockey Stadium yesterday.

Against Argentina on Saturday, T&T were 4-0 down at half time and the number two world ranked Argentinian team poured on the pressure with eight goals in the second half to rout the local squad and put themselves in pole position in the group. Argentina’s Carla Rebecchi notched four goals for the hosts.

The papers say the 3rd game is today. but it's actually on the 24th at 5:30 pm

T&T were 4th in the 2009 cup.

Jeez, 12-0. Them girls were shell-shocked. We have to improve. Again I think our women sport still get the shorter end of the stick when come to financial support, training and preps. for international tournaments.

That result against Argentina was not a disgrace. Argentina's women are ranked #2 in the world. USA at #10 and Chile at #18 are the next Pan Am teams in the ranking and they are in the other group. Canada are ranked #23 while we are #26. This team is the least experienced team we've had recently, which is saying something since we've not had anything close to full strength in years, and the coach will be shown up since he doesn't have the talent available as he did with the men. I would consider the tournament a success if the women finish 6th, but I feel like there's a mentality in the hockey community that to compete means you play open attacking hockey, rather than with a responsible, well structured approach. Today is Canada, so we'll see how they do. Good luck to them.

T&T playing Mexico now, to determine if they in the 5/6 placement game or the 7/8 placement game.
Guyana lost 6-0 to Uruguay to seal their spot in the 7/8 placement game.

Tied 4-4 after regulation time.

Lost 3-2 on penalties. So we'll play Guyana for 7th spot.

A decent performance I think, but meaningless if these girls don't play more international matches in between competition time.

Sounds familiar ...

Quote
Hockey team leaves for Uruguay without accommodation money

The national women’s hockey team finally left the country on Saturday morning for the World League two series in Montevideo, Uruguay.

The travelling party of 18 players and 10 officials, among them including a government representative, jetted out of the country at 5.35 am, aboard Ethiopian Airlines flight.

They team was to fly to Addis Ababa en route to Sao Paolo before picking a connecting flight to Montevideo, a journey of about 22 hours.

This means the team will arrive in Montevideo early Sunday.  The trip had looked in doubt because by Friday evening, the Government had yet to release the Sh5 million to cater for the team’s food, accommodation and allowances. The team, however, jetted out without the money following a firm assurance from the government that it would be sent before the squad arrives in Uruguay. Kenya Hockey Union vice chairperson, Elynah Shiveka,  told Sunday Nation Sport that Sports Cabinet Secretary Hassan Wario called her personally to inform her about the decision after waiting for the money for hours

We lost to Azerbaijan 5-1. We play Kenya today.

Of note: in the other group, the Italian squad includes 12 naturalized Argentines.

Steups. Went to ketch today´s game, only to hear only one game was played before play was suspended. According to one of the guards, supposedly 4 games will occur tomorrow starting @ 5:30pm. No explanation given.

Team won by default versus the ill-fated Kenyans and loss 3-0 to France. However, lots of hockey yet to be played through the rounds.

The squad is a U21 team playing in a tourney that is not a per se U21 tournament. In observing the team, I found several playing characteristics that are reflected in some of our (junior) footballers (lack of concentration, failure to read the game (or lack of will to move in anticipation of predictable passes until the pass is actually executed) - even in situations and moments that are replicated time and time again in the opponent's attacking movement. Notwithstanding this, it is encouraging to see a coach embrace a development and exposure policy.

The skipper (number 11, Lewis) was vocal and exuded several laudable leadership qualities. Saw her take the initiative to bear some of the weight in defence when one of her teammates was struggling physically. Overall, she did not complain and tried to deal with each challenge as presented.

With even a modest but consistent level of investment, T&T hockey can thrive significantly. I was encouraged by several items I learned and observed. Decision-making stakeholders, please note accordingly.

Dispite the shortcomings, you have  to give the participants of this game encouragement. Women hockey loss is football, volleyball and basketball gain. Girls looking to play a sport where they can get scholarships. It is probably easier to get a scholarship in the other sports than field hockey. I really don't know.  Siu-Butt went to AU in DC. Netball is the biggest loser of all. Good luck ladies.

Several players on this squad are on scholarship. That was news to me. True, field hockey is not available at many institutions, but less to choose from could be helpful.
