Brace!!!

A day of sorrow for Trinidad & Tobago football, and a sad day for players and lovers of the sport anywhere around the globe that learn this news. With football being a way of life, all with a passion for the game - whether on the sidelines or on the field or in the stands - would absorb that this is tragic. However, it doesn't have to be the end.

While it changes this man's journey inasmuch as it's a different journey and a new beginning, once there's life, there's hope, and Akeem we are backing you to pull through and forge ahead with a new beginning.

Battle on, warrior! Continue to fight the good fight you've been fighting!

Adams loses limb; but not the war
By Lasana Liburd (Wired868)

Twenty-two year old Trinidad and Tobago and Ferencvarosi defender Akeem Adams lost his left leg this morning after his fourth emergency operation since suffering a massive heart attack almost two weeks ago in Hungary.

Adams was given an artificial, mechanical heart on Thursday 26 September but there were circulatory problems, which led to the loss of body tissue in his left leg.

Doctors at the Varosmajori Heart Clinic in Budapest amputated his leg below the left knee this morning and stabilised his circulation. But Adams’ condition remains critical and his body still is not strong enough to endure the heart transplant that could save his life.

“Complications arose due to the collapse of his circulation,” stated a release on the club’s website. “This surgery was successful (and) the circulation of Akeem Adams is stabilised but his condition is still dangerous (and) life threatening.”

Wired868 has not received word yet on how the two-time World Youth Cup player and his family are coping with the devastating turn of events. Adams’ mother, Ancilla Adams, and older brother, Akini Adams, have spent the last nine days in Budapest. Ferencvarosi has provided accommodation and travel to and from the hospital for the family of their player.

As stunned as the three Point Fortin residents might be today, the reality is that every minute they spend together is a blessing.

When Ferencvarosi hastily arranged to have Ancilla and Akini flown to Budapest, the club was not sure if the stricken player would still be alive when his family landed. The damage caused by Adams’ heart attack was so severe that Hungarian doctors were amazed the young man lived through it.

Within hours of his family’s appearance at his bedside, Adams squeezed his mother’s hand and nodded in her direction, which represented a dramatic improvement to his medical condition. By the end of last week, he was conscious and chatting with his mother and brother.

But his condition never stabilised. Every day, he fights for his life.

This is a really sad story. And it makes me think that, while all clubs have new players undergo a physical before signing them, only the richest most elite teams give the kind of in-depth medical exams that can catch these kind of pre-existing heart problems early enough.

Look at Inter Milan. Not once but twice they managed to detect serious heart conditions in new players that their previous clubs had never noticed at all. In Kanu's case it was Ajax, and then later with Fadiga it was Auxerre.

Neither of those clubs are poor. So why did such serious problems slip past them? It really makes you fear that these kinds of cases are going to continue.

Some of these issues simply lie dormant and cannot be detected in advance.  I'm no doctor and don't know enough about this particular situation, but I won't necessarily put the blame on the club or it's finances.

Appeal for support as Adams loses left leg.
T&T Express Reports.

AMPUTATED

Trinidad and Tobago senior national team goalkeeper Jan Michael Williams is appealing for public support for Trinidad and Tobago defender Akeem Adams, who had his left leg amputated In Hungary on Monday night.

On behalf of the national men’s senior team, Williams called on members of the public to show support for the ailing Adams by coming out for next Tuesday’s friendly International against New Zealand at Hasely Crawford Stadium.

The Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) has pledged a portion of funds collected from purchases for the $125 section towards the “Heart of the Warrior” fund in support of the player, while “Heart of a Warrior” T-shirt priced at $100 are available at all Native Spirit stores.

Yesterday, Adams Hungarian club Ferencvárosi Torna Club announced that the 22-year-old player left-footed defender went through a fourth operation on Monday night, resulting in the loss of his lower left-leg.

“Akeem Adams, 22-year-old player of Ferencvárosi Torna Club, went through a life saving surgery this night, during which his lower left limb has been amputated due to the mortification of limb muscles,” Ferencvárosi Torna Club said.

“This unfortunate event is the consequence of the player’s massive heart attack suffered one and a half week ago and the complication arised due to the collapse of his circulation. This surgery prevented the immediate threat to life. The surgery was successful, the circulation of Akeem Adams is stabilised but his condition is still dangerous, life threatening,” Ferencvárosi Torna Club revealed on its website.

Adam’s condition was said to have worsened because of necrosis in the limb as a resulted of his artificial heart not efficiently getting blood to his extremities. Adams was fitted with the mechanical device just under a week ago to stabilise his life. But, he has not since stabilised sufficiently to undergo a further heart surgery.

Williams, is specially touched by Adams’ condition, having played alongside the defender during the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches in 2011, and also has a significant connection with Adams’ club Ferencvarosi, having been a member of the club in 2008.

“This is much more than just a football match on Tuesday,” Williams told TTFA Media. “It’s significant in many ways because we’re all putting our shirts, as players on the field of play and as supporters in the stands in support of one of our brothers who continues to fight for his life.”

“Akeem played with us in World Cup qualifiers, he represented this country at two FIFA youth World Cups and he’s been a terrific guy on and off the field. I remember when I got the news that he signed in Hungary I was encouraged because I spent some time at that same club and I know they would have been impressed by him.”

Meanwhile, orthopedic surgeon, Dr Mario John, the medical doctor attached to the Trinidad and Tobago National Under 17 team in 2007, of which Akeem Adams was a member, believes that the player’s unfortunate position must serve as a wake up call to the local sports medicine community.

John worked with the T&T Under-17s during the CONCACAF qualifiers in Jamaica and subsequently at the FIFA Under 17 World Cup in South Korea. He has called on T&T to formalise a national sports medicine program with a policy of an “access to all” through our health care system.

“It’s extremely unfortunate what has happened to Akeem. Having known him from his days as a member of the national Under-17s, he was an extremely personable and affable young man. What stands out most is his humility,” John said.

“I am not one hundred per cent on the specifics, but cardiovascular tissues is something the sports medicine community should pay close attention to. FIFA is making strides in highlighting conditions in athletes but more could always be done in terms of prevention and bringing awareness to athletes and public alike.”

SHOW YOUR SUPPORT

Fans can show their support for ailing “Soca Warrior” Adams through purchasing the Akeem Adams “Heart of a Warrior” T-shirt, priced at $100 and now available at all Native Spirit stores. Proceeds from tickets sales will also go towards the Akeem Adams “Heart of a Warrior” Foundation from purchases for the $125 section, while there will be collection points at the stadium for patrons wanting to contribute to the fund.

Tickets for the upcoming friendly international against New Zealand are also available from this evening at Kenny’s Sports Centre nationwide, All Out Sports Bar, Law 5 Sports Bar (Chaguanas), More Vino (Woodbrook and San Fernando), Fan Club Movietowne PoS and Gulf City and Tobago FA Offices, Fairfield Complex, Tobago. Proceeds from this game will go towards the Akeem Adams fund.

I've been told that this comes down to practitioners who have developed an acute sense of probing subtleties in condition ... rather than those who probe generally reliably, but somewhat superficially and disassociatively.

There's variance in diagnosis, prognosis and treatment among practitioners even respecting sports-related injuries as routine as concussions or tendonitis. Imagine then the potential for distortion when it's a cardiac situation implicated.

Regarding Fadiga: an acquaintance recounted to me a first-hand account of bumping into Khalilou at a mall in Ohio. He was Stateside for medical treatment and relishing the freedom of movement afforded through not being immediately recognizable to the American public. She didn't know who he was, but her Senegalese basketball player boyfriend, approached him right away and they ended up spending a fair quantum of time together, during which he spoke frankly about his situation.

In his case, it's said that there was dissonance between the medical opinion of the famed cardiologist Pedro Brugada (who comes from a family of cardiologists; 2 of his brothers are cardios) and the medical opinion of Bruno Caru. It's said that Caru got it right, and that Brugada did not.

(Caru is the same physician who opined that Ronaldo's alleged "epileptic experience" prior to the WC 98 final was not in fact epileptic, but rather cardiac in cause.) Go figure ... these are two profesionals at the top of their profession.

It's undeniable that finances are implicated in accessing the best outcomes ... access to the best doctors, but I would shy away from viewing that as decisive. Certainly, clubs lower down the hierarchy (the ones who benefit from sell-on clauses) are likely less positioned to diagnose some medical conditions. However, consider this: they are also less incentivized to do so as well. (They don't get $$$ if they point out problems on investments.)  Also, sometimes, at issue (for players and agents ... is the issue of preserving a player's marketability ... hence dampening scrutiny. I believe this to have occurred in the case of Wason Renteria when his move to Cruz Azul was blocked in 2011 ... and, as Cruz Azul rightly pointed out ... there are also the considerations of player privacy and medical ethics. (I am not stating that Wason's condition was heart-related.)

Of course, when a grave situation like a Fadiga or a Muamba arises, it has already garnered a lot of publicity because something has occurred to place more in the public domain than would ordinarily be the case. All of Khalilou's subsequent clubs were "undeniably" placed on notice of his condition. This isn't often the case in the "undiscovered cases".

The experience of the physicians in the specific context also matters ... and latency of condition isn't something to be dismissed.
