Re: Shocking news about Akeem

Imagine then the potential for distortion when it's a cardiac situation implicated.

Regarding Fadiga: an acquaintance recounted to me a first-hand account of bumping into Khalilou at a mall in Ohio. He was Stateside for medical treatment and relishing the freedom of movement afforded through not being immediately recognizable to the American public. She didn't know who he was, but her Senegalese basketball player boyfriend, approached him right away and they ended up spending a fair quantum of time together, during which he spoke frankly about his situation.

In his case, it's said that there was dissonance between the medical opinion of the famed cardiologist Pedro Brugada (who comes from a family of cardiologists; 2 of his brothers are cardios) and the medical opinion of Bruno Caru. It's said that Caru got it right, and that Brugada did not.

(Caru is the same physician who opined that Ronaldo's alleged "epileptic experience" prior to the WC 98 final was not in fact epileptic, but rather cardiac in cause.) Go figure ... these are two profesionals at the top of their profession.

It's undeniable that finances are implicated in accessing the best outcomes ... access to the best doctors, but I would shy away from viewing that as decisive. Certainly, clubs lower down the hierarchy (the ones who benefit from sell-on clauses) are likely less positioned to diagnose some medical conditions. However, consider this: they are also less incentivized to do so as well. (They don't get $$$ if they point out problems on investments.)  Also, sometimes, at issue (for players and agents ... is the issue of preserving a player's marketability ... hence dampening scrutiny. I believe this to have occurred in the case of Wason Renteria when his move to Cruz Azul was blocked in 2011 ... and, as Cruz Azul rightly pointed out ... there are also the considerations of player privacy and medical ethics. (I am not stating that Wason's condition was heart-related.)

Of course, when a grave situation like a Fadiga or a Muamba arises, it has already garnered a lot of publicity because something has occurred to place more in the public domain than would ordinarily be the case. All of Khalilou's subsequent clubs were "undeniably" placed on notice of his condition. This isn't often the case in the "undiscovered cases".

The experience of the physicians in the specific context also matters ... and latency of condition isn't something to be dismissed.

Impressive response.

My thoughts and prayers are with Akeem and family at this time. Whatever happens, I ask for GOD's blessings to be abundant for them

Adams family coping despite footballer’s condition.
By Ian Prescott (Express).

KEEPING THE FAITH

ANCILLA ADAMS has had to be a strong mother in the face of trying circumstances. Her son, 22 year-old Trinidad and Tobago defender Akeem Adams, remains under deep anaesthesia after suffering a life-threatening heart attack in September on September 25. The family is making the best of difficult circumstances. The good new is that Akeem hangs on to life.

“We are coping,” Ancilla Adams told the Trinidad Express by telephone from Hungary yesterday. “We have to thank God for wisdom, and that he (Akeem) is holding on.”

Adams is in the clinical intensive care unit of Városmajori Heart Clinic, where he underwent a fourth life-saving surgery on Monday night, but lost his lower left leg.

The T&T footballer was hospitalised after a massive heart attack 15 days ago and initially had three life-saving surgeries, including the fitting of an artificial heart to replace the failed organ. With the permission of his mother, doctors performed a fourth surgery on the ailing “Soca Warrior” to remove his lower- left leg. Akeem developed necrosis in the limb as a resulted of his artificial heart not efficiently getting blood to his extremities.

This surgery prevented the immediate threat to his life and successfully stabilised Adams’s circulation, but his condition is still listed as dangerous and life threatening. He is awaiting a heart transplant once his condition improves.

Both Adams’ mother and his brother Akini have been in Hungary for 12 days, brought there by the Ferencvárosi Torna team, which signed Akeem in August. The family is unable to speak specifically of his medical condition, an agreement with his Hungarian club Ferencvárosi Torna, but appear to be comfortable and said they needed nothing at the moment.

“We need nothing right now. All we need is prayer,” Adams’ mother said. “Every day we have to go to the hospital....he needs our support.”

Likewise, Point Fortin Civic FC reserve goalkeeper Akini said: “We coping. We coping.”

Adams mother recalled the horror moment when she found out that he son had fallen ill.

“It was a shock,” Ancilla Adams declared. “But when things like this happen you have to keep faith in God. I have to thank God that I know God because he knows why this happened. We don’t know. We can’t understand.”

In related news, the Hungarian newspaper Blikk reports that Hungarian medical experts predict that defender Akeem faces an additional risk of contracting pneumonia as a result of induced deep anesthesia. Dr. Stephen Kóczán was quoted as saying: “The maintenance of artificial circulation can cause a problem, but the biggest problem is that the long-range deep anesthesia may result in pneumonia.”

“It is certain that the circulation in the limb did not work,” a cardiologist told this newspaper.” It is conceivable that in the femoral artery zárodott (sic), there came no fresh blood in the leg. It is also possible that the artery has worked, but the thinner the blood capillaries has not been delivered.

A third possibility is that the varicose veins brought to the service. In either there was decay in the legs due to lack of oxygen bacteria, toxins in production of this blood poisoning, and led to the death of limbs.”

However, cardiologist Dr. Andrew Papp, who is in charge of the footballer at the Városmajori clinic said that Akeem’s condition is under constant observation.

“The intensive care unit monitor your vital organs functioning 24 hours a day,” Papp said. “They need to respond to small changes, but certainly not (necessarily) in all cases serious intervention (is required). The key is to avoid potential further complications before transplantation.”

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Benefit match for ill Akeem

Benefit match for ill Akeem
By Sue-Ann Wayow (T&T Express)

PRAYERS are being said daily for the recovery of national footballer Akeem Adams at his alma mater Presentation College, San Fernando.

School principal Dexter Mitchell said since Adams suffered a heart attack in Hungary, prayers have been said for him every day during the school’s assemblies and support is being given to his family.

Adams’ lower left leg was amputated on Monday night in Hungary as a result of necrosis (cell death) in his limb.

The 22-year-old footballer suffered a massive heart attack last week and has been hospitalised awaiting a heart transplant.

Mitchell said even though he never knew Adams personally as he is new to the school, he had heard only good reports about the footballer who also played for Presentation College. The news of Adams’ medical condition came as a shock to many because he was always a healthy child at school, Mitchell said.

Adams’ family has received financial support from the school, he said.

Mitchell said on Tuesday, the school came up with the idea to have a “benefit football game” with another school in Adams’ hometown of Point Fortin.

He said: “We are also looking at some sustained assistance in the months and possible years ahead, because it is not a one-off thing. One of the things here at Presentation Collage is that they always look out for one another regardless of what year they attended the college.”

The school’s parish priest, Monsignor Christian Pereira, was asked to offer special prayers for Adams.

Mitchell, who is also a minister, offers prayers for Adams when he conducts his services during the weekend in Cedros.

Mitchell said: “We are hoping that he survives the whole ordeal but even when he survives, he will need a whole lot of support and encouragement,” Mitchell said.

Public showing support for ailing ‘Warrior’ Adams
By Kern De Freitas (Express).

There has been an encouraging show of support for Trinidad and Tobago footballer Akeem Adams, with members of the public stepping up to purchase “Support Akeem” T-shirts in the last few days.

The T-shirts are part of “Heart of a Warrior” fund-raising efforts towards medical expenses for the ailing player, who suffered a massive heart attack on September 25. The T&T defender, who only recently signed with Hungarian club Ferencvárosi TC, has since been fitted with a mechanical heart, and is awaiting a heart transplant.

Currently, the 22-year-old athlete is in the clinical intensive care unit of Városmajori Heart Clinic in Hungary, where he underwent four life-saving surgeries, including the amputation of his lower left leg, after he developed necrosis in the limb due to difficulties with blood circulation in his extremities.

The T-shirts are being sold at Native Spirit outlets at Long Circular, Gulf City and Trincity malls. The Express visited the Trincity Mall branch yesterday, and asked about sales of the T-shirts.

“Excellent,” Native Spirit sales representative Abigail Francis revealed. “They’ve been selling very well, people have been coming in and showing support, and we’ve had to print more T-shirts.”

Over 1,000 T-shirts have so far been printed for the cause, and Francis estimated that more than 140 of them are being sold per day at both Long Circular and Trincity since they went on sale early this week. Sales in Gulf City have not gone as well, but they are expected to pick up.

The Express understands that Adams’ alma mater, Presentation College San Fernando, is also showing strong support for its former football star with the purchase of T-shirts—ex-and current students, and teachers.

Patrons wishing to support can purchase T-shirts in red and black at the above-mentioned branches at the cost of $100. The T&T Football Association (TTFA) also announced last week that part proceeds from Tuesday’s match between T&T and New Zealand at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain will go to the “Heart of a Warrior” fund in support of Adams.

There will be a special section at the match exclusively in support of Adams. It has also been announced that T-shirts will be on sale at the match venue.

Tickets for the match are available at More Vino Restaurant in Woodbrook and San Fernando; All Out Sports Bar, Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain; Law 5 Sports Bar, Chaguanas; The Fan Club Movietowne (Port of Spain and Gulf City); Tobago FA Office; and Fairfield Complex in Scarborough.

The tickets are priced at $75 (uncovered stands), $100 (covered stands) and $125 (Akeem Adams section).

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Akeem Adams responsive.
By Ian Prescott (Express).

AKEEM ADAMS is said to be responsive, but there is so far no confirmation that he has awaken from anesthesia after having his lower left leg amputated on Monday night.

Yesterday, there were reports that the  22-year-old Trinidad and Tobago footballer had awakened from the anesthesia and is off a ventilator. It was also said that he had spoken to his mother Ancilla Adams.

However, no official source has so far corroborated that the player regained consciousness. Information regarding the player’s health is being closely guarded by his Hungarian club Ferencvárosi Torna, which has made periodical reports on the player’s condition.

But yesterday, Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) general secretary Sheldon Phillip was in contact with the Adams family by telephone.

“The news that I have heard is that he was responsive,” Phillips said yesterday. “In speaking with his family yesterday, there was no mention of that (he had awaken). I had also heard the rumours that he had awoken, but we have not been able to confirm such.”

The T&T footballer was hospitalised after a massive heart attack on September 25 and initially had three life-saving surgeries, including the fitting of an artificial heart to replace the failed organ.

With the permission of his mother, doctors performed a fourth surgery on the ailing “Soca Warrior” to remove his lower left leg after the player developed necrosis as a result of his artificial heart not efficiently getting blood to his extremities.

This surgery prevented the immediate threat to his life and successfully stabilised Adams’s circulation. He is awaiting a heart transplant once his condition improves.

Since Adams suffered a massive heart attack, his operations and medical expenses were funded by insurance coverage when he signed for Ferencvárosi in August. The club also flew his mother Ancilla Adams and brother Akini Adams to Hungary and has taken care of their accommodation and needs since.

The family are under agreement that they will not directly divulge information about the player’s condition.

Meanwhile, the Hungarian club has also auctioned off an exclusive autographed Akeem Adams T-shirt, and are also selling special match tickets to raise funds for Adams and his family. The special tickets cost HUF 1,000 and can be purchased in unlimited quantities.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Adams family creates bank account for donations
By Lasana Liburd (Wired868)

Friends and well-wishers who would like to financially assist stricken Trinidad and Tobago footballer Akeem Adams can now do so directly as his mother, Ancilla Dick-Adams, has had a Royal Bank account set up for that purpose in her name.

The 22-year-old Adams, who is an employee of top flight Hungarian team Ferencvarosi, is in ICU at the Varosmajori Heart Clinic in Budapest after suffering a massive heart attack just over two weeks ago.

The former two-time World Youth Cup defender had his left leg amputated from below the knee on Tuesday morning after experiencing life threatening blood circulatory problems. However, doctors are happy with his improvement since then and Adams is said to be alert and in good spirits.

There have been several fund raising efforts for Adams to date. There will be an Akeem Adams section at Tuesday night’s friendly international game between Trinidad and Tobago and New Zealand in the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Port of Spain and $50 from each ticket sold for that area has been promised to the Adams’ family.

Native Spirit branches at the Long Circular, Trincity and Gulf City Malls are also selling Akeem Adams tee-shirts for $100 with all proceeds going to the family while DIRECTV W Connection has donated its Charity Shield winnings and football fans site, SocaWarriors.net, has also started a collection.

But now Good Samaritans can donate directly to the family by walking into any RBC branch and depositing money for Ancilla Dick-Adams at account number #100085172658914.

The donations can immediately help Adams’ mother to continue to care for her son in Budapest and also assist in the funding of the player’s health care when it becomes necessary.

Beyond Akeem (and certainly, let's help him as much as we can) the TTFF needs to take up Flex' suggestion and establish the 'Heart of a Warrior' fund as a permanent standing fund, a trust even, to be available to current and former Men's and Women's national team members in need.  It could be restricted to just medical expenses or just general assistance as funds are available.  This should be an on-going effort... but happy to see it being done all the same.
