I'm a week late, but October is Calypso History Month.

For the last twelve (12) years the Trinbago Unified Calypsonians Organization (TUCO) has been commemorating Calypso History in the month of October. This celebration is done to underscore the importance of Calypso as a local art form, and as a living and integral part of our identity, history and society. With a legacy spanning over a century, the art of Calypso itself remains an iconic element of modern music, as well as a foundational part of much of our local musical traditions and industry.
 
To share in the commemoration of this auspicious occasion, the Ministry of the Arts and Multiculturalism (MAM) in collaboration with TUCO and the Airports Authority of Trinidad and Tobago (AATT) are mounting two exhibitions during the month of October, to honour the music, the events, and the artistes, that have made Calypso the wonderful art form it has become. The exhibitions will take the form of both an interactive display in the North Atrium of the Piarco International Airport and a pictorial display on the façade of the Culture Division Building on Frederick Street, Port of Spain.
 
The Research Unit of the Ministry of the Arts and Multiculturalism will continue in its tradition of providing informative displays {50th Anniversary Exhibition, Indian Arrival Day Exhibition, Emancipation Day Exhibition} about the cultural heritage of Trinidad and Tobago. For its newest presentations for Calypso History Month, the exhibitions will include a combination of dynamic visuals, traditional elements and pertinent information to provide for the viewing public a nugget of the history, values and customs of the multifaceted patrimony of Trinidad and Tobago. The display would also highlight the Calypso Monarch Winners from 1939 to 2013, and the artistes who have upheld and in some cases positively transformed one of our most cherished and vibrant musical art forms.
 
These exhibitions will be open to the public, free of charge, from October 4th at the North Atrium of the Piarco International Airport, and will be visible to pedestrians and motorists from October 1st, on the facade of the Culture Division Building, Upper Frederick Street, Port of Spain.

Little known fact: The online transportation medium called Uber was pioneered in Trinidad & Tobago in the 1960's. It was originally called pullin bull.

Calypso History

What is Calypso?
 
Calypso is a style of Afro-Caribbean music that originated in Trinidad and Tobago from African and European roots. The roots of the genre lay in the arrival of enslaved Africans, who, not being allowed to speak to each other, communicated through song. This forged a sense of community among the Africans, who saw their colonial master’s change rapidly, bringing French, Spanish and British music styles to the island of Trinidad. The French brought Carnival to Trinidad, and calypso competitions at Carnival grew in popularity, especially after the abolition of slavery in 1834. While most authorities stress the African roots of calypso, in his 1986 book, Calypso from France to Trinidad: 800 Years of History, that veteran calypsonian, The Roaring Lion (Rafael de Leon) asserted that calypso descends from the music of the medieval French troubadours.

The History of Calypso:

The modern music history of Trinidad and Tobago reflects the ethnic groups which form the current culture—French, Spanish, British, the African and New World nations from which the African population derives, and subsequent immigration from Asia and India in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. A creole culture was formed, combining elements of hundreds of African ethnic groups, native inhabitants of the islands, Indian indentured labourers, and British, French and Spanish colonizers. French planters and their slaves emigrated to Trinidad during the French Revolution (1789) from Martinique, including a number of West Africans, and French creoles from Saint Vincent, Grenada, and Dominica, establishing a local community before Trinidad and Tobago were taken from Spain by the British. Carnival had arrived with the French, and the slaves, who could not take part in Carnival, formed their own, parallel celebration called canboulay.
 
Stick fighting and African percussion music were banned in 1881, in response to the Canboulay Riots. They were replaced by bamboo sticks beaten together, which were themselves banned in turn. In 1937 they reappeared, transformed as an orchestra of frying pans, dustbin lids and oil drums. These steel-pans or pans are now a major part of the Trinidadian music scene and are a popular section of the Canboulay music contests. In 1941, the United States Navy arrived on Trinidad, and the pan-men, who were associated with lawlessness and violence, helped to popularize steel pan music among soldiers, which began its international popularization.

Etymology:

It is thought that the name "calypso" was originally "kaiso," which is now believed to come from Efik "ka isu" 'go on!' and Ibibio "kaa iso" 'continue, go on,' used in urging someone on or in backing a contestant.There is also a Trinidadian term, "cariso" which is used to refer to "old-time" calypsos.The term "calypso" is recorded from the 1930s onwards. The word was bastardized into "Calypso" when the early European settlers put the word into print. (Best known from Homer's epic, the Odyssey, Calypso was a nymph who enticed Odysseus into a cave for seven years.)Origins

The first identifiably calypso genre song was recorded in 1912, by Lovey's String Band while visiting New York City. In 1914, the second calypso song was recorded, this time in Trinidad, by chantwell Julian Whiterose, better known as the Iron Duke and famous stick fighter. Jules Sims would also record vocal calypsos. The majority of these calypsos of the World War I era were instrumentals by Lovey and Lionel Belasco. Perhaps due to the constraints of the wartime economy, no recordings of note were produced until the late 1920s and early 1930s, when the "golden era" of calypso would cement the style, form, and phrasing of the music.
 
Calypso evolved into a way of spreading news around Trinidad. Politicians, journalists and public figures often debated the content of each song, and many islanders considered these songs the most reliable news source. Calypsonians pushed the boundaries of free speech as their lyrics spread news of any topic relevant to island life, including speaking out against political corruption. Eventually British rule enforced censorship and police began to scan these songs for damaging content.
 
Even with this censorship, calypsos continued to push boundaries, with a variety of ways to slip songs past the scrutinizing eyes of the editor. Double entendre, or double-speak, was one way, as was the practice of denouncing countries such as Hitler's Germany and its annexation of Poland, while making pointed references toward the UK's policies on Trinidad. Sex, scandal, gossip, innuendo, politics, local news, bravado and insulting other calypsonians were the order of the day in classic calypso, just as it is today with classic hip hop. And just as the hip-hop of today, the music sparked shock and outrage in the moral sections of society.
 
Countless recordings were dumped at sea in the name of censorship, although in truth, rival U.S. companies did this in the spirit of underhanded competition, claiming that the rivals' material was unfit for U.S. consumption. Decca Records lost untold pressings in this manner, as did its rival, RCA's Bluebird label.
 
An entrepreneur named Eduardo Sa Gomes played a significant role in spreading calypso in its early days. Sa Gomes, a Portuguese immigrant who owned a local music and phonograph equipment shop in Port of Spain, promoted the genre and gave financial support to the local artists. In March 1934 he sent Roaring Lion and Attila the Hun to New York City to record; they became the first calypsonians to record abroad, bringing the genre out of the West Indies and into pop culture. Lord Invader was quick to follow, and staying in New York City after a protracted legal case involving the theft of his song "Rum and Coca-Cola", a hit by the Andrews Sisters, made his home there along with Wilmoth Houdini, and became one of the great calypsonians of the USA.

Popular music

The first major stars of calypso started crossing over to new audiences worldwide in the late 1930s. Attila the Hun, Roaring Lion and Lord Invader were first, followed by Lord Kitchener, one of the longest-lasting calypso stars in history—he continued to release hit records until his death in 2000. 1944's "Rum and Coca-Cola" by the Andrews Sisters, a cover version of a Lord Invader song, became an American hit despite the song being a very critical commentary on the explosion of prostitution, inflation and other negative influences accompanying the American military bases in Trinidad at the time. Perhaps the most straight forward way to describe the focus of calypso is that it articulated itself as a form of protest against the authoritarian colonial culture which existed at the time.

Calypso, especially a toned-down, commercial variant, became a worldwide craze with the release of the "Banana Boat Song", or "Day-O", a traditional Jamaican folk song, whose best-known rendition was done by Harry Belafonte on his album Calypso (1956); Calypso was the first full-length record to sell more than a million copies. (Ironically, the music style on that album was mento.) The success of that album inspired hundreds of "Folkies", or the American folk music revival to imitate the "Belafonte style", but with a more folk-oriented flavor. The Kingston Trio would be a good example.

1956 also saw the massive international hit "Jean and Dinah" by Mighty Sparrow. This song too was a sly commentary as a "plan of action" for the calypsonian on the widespread prostitution and the prostitutes' desperation after the closing of the U.S. naval base on Trinidad at Chaguaramas.
 
In the Broadway-theatre musical Jamaica (1957), Harold Arlen and Yip Harburg cleverly parodied "commercial", Belafonte-style calypso.
 
Several films jumped on the calypso craze in 1957 such as Island in the Sun (20th Century Fox) that featured Belafonte and the low-budget films Calypso Joe (Allied Artists), Calypso Heat Wave (Columbia Pictures), and Bop Girl Goes Calypso (United Artists).

Robert Mitchum released an album, Calypso...Is Like So (1957), on Capitol records, capturing the sound, spirit, and subtleties of the genre.
 
Dizzy Gillespie recorded a calypso album "Jambo Caribe" (1964) with James Moody and Kenny Barron.
 
Soul shouter Gary "US" Bonds released a calypso album Twist up Calypso (1962) on Legrand records, shortly after returning home from his military post in Port of Spain.
 
The French and pioneer electronic musician Jean Michel Jarre released an album in 1990 called Waiting for Cousteau. The album has 4 tracks: Calypso, Calypso part 2, Calypso part 3 Fin de Siècle and Waiting for Cousteau. It was a dedicated to Jacques-Yves Cousteau in his 80th birthday. This album had a special participation of the Amocco Renegades (a traditional steel drum band from Trinidad and Tobago). In the first track is possible to notice a strong style influence.

Calypso had another short burst of commercial interest when Tim Burton's horror/comedy film Beetlejuice (1988) was released, and used Belafonte's "Jump In The Line" as the soundtrack´s headliner.
 
Calypso is part of a spectrum of similar folk and popular Caribbean styles that spans benna and mento, but remains the most prominent genre of Lesser Antillean music. Calypso's roots are somewhat unclear, but it can be traced to 18th-century Trinidad. Modern calypso, however, began in the 19th century, a fusion of disparate elements ranging from the masquerade song lavway, French Creole belair, and the stick fighting chantwell. Calypso's early rise was closely connected with the adoption of Carnival by Trinidadian slaves, including camboulay drumming and the music masquerade processions.

Early forms of calypso were also influenced by jazz such as Sans Humanitae. In this extempo (extemporaneous) melody calypsonians lyricise impromptu, commenting socially or insulting each other, "sans humanité" or "no mercy" (which is again a reference to French influence).
 
Calypso evolved very closely with other pan-Atlantic musical genres such as jazz, mento, compas, son and highlife.

The Calypso Craze boxed set

Nearly 60 years before Bunji Garlin and Nigel Rojas’ Differentology got a half-minute play on the intro to an American TV show, Trinidad’s indigenous music completely dominated American pop music for half a year.
 
Between late 1956 and mid-1957, calypso mushroomed so huge in the US that nightclubs refitted themselves overnight as “calypso rooms” with limbo floorshows, legendary American singer Ella Fitzgerald covered a kaiso, three feature-length calypso movies were rushed into production in Hollywood and advertising copy for cosmetics was copied from the lyrics and written to the tune of Lord Invader’s Rum and Coca-Cola. (“From down in the land of the sun and sea/ Comes your new fashion personality/ A new lipstick shade of happy cha-rac-ter/ Hi-Fi Calypso Beat by Max Factor.”) Indeed, the first million-selling LP in the United States was not a rock-and-roll record, as most people might reasonably assume, but Harry Belafonte’s 1956 album, Calypso.
 
That insane little period—the Calypso Craze—has now been preserved in the best modern way any old music can be: as a Bear Family boxed set, curated—it is the right word—by the Alaskan-by-birth, Trini-by-adoption musicologist, Ray Funk.
 
Bear Family, the world-respected German record label, last caught Trinidadian attention in 2007 with D!ck Spottswood and John Cowley’s labour of love, the ten-CD boxed set West Indian Rhythm (pre-WWII recordings by Attila the Hun, King Radio, the Roaring Lion and the Lords Executor, Caresser and Invader, amongst others).
 
Anyone who bought West Indian Rhythm knew two things, the first, instantly, the other, discovered over many hours: first, at TT $2,000, it was expensive; and, second, it was worth it—and not just because in an age of hideous mass-produced tat it was a singular thing of real and valuable beauty; no, amortised over the ten hours it took to listen to West Indian Rhythm and the same amount of time, or longer, it took to read the inch-thick, LP-sized accompanying book, the person enjoying the experience was transported back in time to the calypso tents of old Port-of-Spain, hearing and “seeing,” eg, Lord Beginner sing Run Yuh Run, Hitler.
 
Calypso Craze could well be better; and, at TT$1,450 for six CDs and a DVD, it is certainly cheaper! For whatever it’s worth, the writing in Calypso Craze’s hefty, 157-page book (by Ray Funk and Michael Edlrige) is impossible to shorten—the surest sign of good writing anywhere outside of William Faulkner, Marcel Proust and James Joyce. Every page is crammed with practitioner-textbook levels of information, every word of it read and digested as easily as a newspaper weekend supplement.
 
The book is jammed with photographs and reproductions of memorabilia of the time, almost all from the personal collection of Ray Funk. Magazine covers, mail order clothing catalogues, concert tickets, record labels, party fliers, the Max Factor lipstick advertisement quoted above and more bring 1950 America to life in the reader’s hands. (The boxed set cover is a reprint of the menu of the then Calypso Restaurant in New York City’s Greenwich Village.) Calypso Craze also deepens and widens its visual dimension by adding moving pictures in a DVD.
 
As good as the words and pictures are, though, the boxed set would not be much good if the music wasn’t.
 
The “weakest” disc—disc two, The Reluctant Calypso King—collects 27 of Harry Belafonte’s best songs, starting with his cover of Man Smart, Woman Smarter and running through staples like The Banana Boat Song (Day-O) and Islands in the Sun before its crescendo in a five-minute-long, Ralph McDonald-arranged version of Lord Invader’s Don’t Stop the Carnival.
 
And that’s the “weakest” disc!
 
Along with that deserved focus on the man who, at the time, represented calypso in America and the world, the musical story of the Calypso Craze is comprehensively told in the five other CDs. The entire collection begins with the Lion’s original Ugly Woman (in which he dispensed the famously misogynistic advice to men that, if they wanted to be happy in life, they should make an ugly woman their wife) and ending, some 173 tracks later, with Jimmy Soul’s pop cover of the same song (titled, If You Wanna Be Happy).
 
Disc one, Calypso Comes to America, includes songs performed in Trinidad by Attila the Hun, Lion, Caresser and Invader as well as genuine calypsoes that hit big in the USA, the most famous of which was the Andrews Sisters/Morey Amsterdam barefaced theft of Rum and Coca-Cola, and the ersatz Brill Building/Tin Pan Alley copies like Sing a Tropical Song, which ensured the Calypso Craze would ultimately crash.
 
Importantly, the disc includes recordings by the best known Trinidadian or West Indian calypsonians in the US, such as Sir Lancelot and the Duke of Iron, as well as “calypsoes” done by huge American stars of the time like Ella Fitzgerald, Eartha Kitt and Nat “King” Cole. (Disc one contains, in Guests of Rudy Valee by Lion and Attila, the only track also on West Indian Rhythm.)
 
Disc three, Calypso Is Everywhere, might be the most impressive single disc of the boxed set, even if there are more fake calypsoes on it than real ones. In 31 musical tracks and one dreadful road safety campaign jingle (with Julie Conway’s terribly-faked Trini “ahk-sent”), Funk shows that the music of Trinidad was so pervasive, it drove country and western stars as big as Hank Snow into imitating it. Whatever musical weaknesses there might be elsewhere on disc three, it opens and closes with stunning recordings, the Tarriers’ haunting, definitive version of Day-O (itself introduced by a couplet from an old Maroon song) and many people’s favourite jazz tenor saxophonist, Sonny Rollins’ interpretation of Don’t Stop the Carnival.
 
Discs four; Calypso Goes to the Movies, Broadway, Television and More, and six; Calypso Goes Global, cover the ground their titles suggest, and include gems like Mama ist aus Kuba, which translates from the German as, Mama Look a Booboo Dey, the famous American actor Robert Mitchum’s cover of Jean and Dinah and the even more famous Maya Angelou—yes, the Maya Angelou—singing Run Joe and (Shame &) Scandal in the Family. (Maya Angelou’s reinvention of herself as a writer and poet was not the most stunning for a calypsonian of the Calypso Craze: that honour goes to the Charmer, represented, on disc one, with Is She Is, Or Is She Ain’t?, a ditty about a male transsexual; the Charmer would emerge from his calypso cocoon as Louis Farrakhan, the leader of the Nation of Islam!)
 
Perhaps the most impressive musical disc, though, is number five, Calypso Across the Pond, which collects songs recorded in England. Lord Kitchener’s Keeetch (Small Comb) alone would have justified the whole disc but it also features several others of his best songs, including Kitch’s Bebop Calypso (which pointed towards future inventive crossover compositions like Sugar Bum Bum and Bees Melody) and London is the Place for Me (last heard on the big screen in the soundtrack to the film, Paddington).
 
Disc five also features Lord Beginner’s Victory Test Match (Ramdhin and Valentine); the Mighty Terror’s Chinese Children; the most famous Trinidadian musician nobody in Trinidad knows, Edmundo Ros; and Gossip Calypso by Bernard Cribbins, which came in equal parts from the West Indies and London’s East End.
 
But it might be the DVD that really lifts Calypso Craze into a must-have, even with a four-figure price tag. The movie itself—Calypso Joe—might make Adam Sandler or Ed Wood cringe. Low budget, with a clichéd romantic comedy storyline, it’s far less interesting than any of the four videos included to fill out the DVD (which include precious footage of Beryl McBurnie dancing in the USA as La Belle Rosette). The movie’s real worth comes in the dozen or so live musical performances strung together by its weak plot—particularly the four of them featuring Lord Flea of Jamaica, which by themselves redeem Calypso Joe in toto.
 
Look past Lord Flea in the straw hat and colourful shirt that became the calypsonian’s obligatory costume after its adoption by Madison Avenue and you see the first West Indian superstar, the forerunner of everyone from Jimmy Cliff to Rihanna; and the thing that makes Caribbean music in all its forms so easy to embrace: exuberance married to musicianship and delivered with showmanship; if we could bat now like Lord Flea performed half-a-century ago, the West Indies cricket team might be holding up the World Cup in a couple o’ weeks, instead of looking for their boarding passes today.

Calypso History Month kicks off in Tobago

 A live radio interview last week signalled the start to Calypso History Month in Tobago.

The interview on Tuesday by Radio Tambrin 92.7FM saw radio host and the knowledgeable calypso connoisseur, Claude 'Al Joe' Joseph, hosting the Trinbago Unified Calypsonians Organisation (TUCO) - Tobago Zone  Chairman, and TUCO's National Vice-President, Ainsley King on the morning show.

The discussion centred on the state of the calypso artform in Trinidad and Tobago and about its evolution.

This was the first salvo for Tobago in the celebration of Calypso History Month which will culminate with the ‘vintage calypso monarch’ competition on Saturday October 31 at the Pembroke Heritage Park, from 8.30 pm. During the month, which is dedicated to focusing on the evolution of the calypso artform, a number of activities have been planned by TUCO, both in Trinidad and in Tobago. A number of panel discussions are also scheduled to take place also on Radio Tambrin, as well as the Street 91.9Fm with hosts Brother B and Natasha Chance, and on Tobago's only television station Tobago Channel 5.

Then, on Saturday October 17, at 4pm, TUCO Tobago will stage a calypso demonstration in the form of the auditions for the ‘vintage calypso’ competition at the Anne Mitchell-Gift Auditorium of the Scarborough Library Facility. Singers will perform a calypso song which must have been recorded before 1985. According to the rules of the competition, the lyrics of the song must not be changed. Nine singers will be chosen to compete against reigning ‘Vintage Monarch’, Prince Unique. Singers will be judged on diction, presentation and rendition; because of the nature of the competition little or no emphasis will be placed on the lyrics from the original composer of the chosen song.
