RIVALS Thread: Central FC vs Point Fortin (22-Oct-13).

Central, Point Fortin in Digicel Pro League clash on Tuesday.
ttproleague.com.

Central FC and Point Fortin Civic FC will meet for the first time in an eagerly anticipated Digicel Pro League Round One Match Day Four clash from 8pm at the Ato Boldon Stadium. And that’s not the only exciting feature at the Couva venue.

League leaders, DIRECTV W Connection (9 points from 3 matches), will host third positioned North East Stars (6 points from 3 matches) from 6pm.

“It’s the top four teams at the venue, and the outcome of the games will say a lot,” said Point Fortin head coach Reynold Carrington.

Carrington’s side sits second on the table with 9 points from 3 matches, and only behind Connection by a lesser goal difference, while Central—fresh from lifting the 2013 First Citizens Cup last Friday with a 2-1 come from behind win over Defence Force—occupies fourth position with 4 points from 2 matches.

Simultaneously at the Hasely Crawford Stadium on Tuesday, Police FC will tackle San Juan Jabloteh and leading league goalscorer Kerry Baptiste—7 goals in all competitions—from 6pm, and from 8pm, last season’s winners, Defence Force, and runners-up, Caledonia, both winless in the league thus far, will do battle.

“The league [title] is a journey,” continued Carrington, a former Connection captain and Trinidad and Tobago midfielder.

“The result of the game against Central is important as every other game, and once we keep winning, and we keep playing every match for the community of Point Fortin, then have a good chance.”

The debuting Pro League campaigners, Point Fortin, defeated Police FC 4-1 (Round One Match Day One), and registered 1-0 wins against North East Stars (Match Day Two) and St. Ann’s Rangers (Match Day Three), but were ousted in the quarter-final round of the First Citizens Cup by rivals W Connection 6-5 on penalties following a goalless draw at the Mahaica Oval in Point Fortin.

“So far playing against teams like W Connection and North East Stars … North East Stars were the ones to really test our ability at this level,” admitted Carrington.

“On Tuesday against Central, they will obviously be on a high coming off winning the First Citizens Cup, and no way at all, will be a team that we can walk over easily. The contest will be very challenging.

“In saying that, our players now have an opportunity to go out and prove themselves and not let down the  magnitude of the double header, because W Connection and North East Stars will play in first match,” said the Point Fortin coach.

Meanwhile, the 15-month old Central football club, unquestionably still glowing over its inaugural title, stands unbeaten in all competitions this season.

Central sounded its 2013-14 intentions by defeating defending league champions Defence Force 3-1 in Round One Match Day One, but were held to a goalless draw against Caledonia in Match Day Two.

In the First Citizens Cup, eventually captured by the Sharks, the Terry Fenwick coached club defeated North East Stars 2-1 in the quarter-final round and Connection 3-2 on penalties following a 0-0 draw with 10-men.

“It’s really important for us to keep winning,” said Central FC captain Jason Marcano. “We want to show the (Trinidad and Tobago) national team and the general public what we are capable of with our mixture of youth and experience. We are playing an attacking style of football and hopefully our performances can bring the best out of other teams as well.”

Marcano—who missed the First Citizens Cup Final through red card suspension—added, “Point Fortin (Civic) have a good support at home and at away matches, but we have a good support from the people of the central region and we play to the best of our ability. We are young and vibrant, and great things will be coming out of us.”

The midfielder, eager to return to action, said it was difficult having to watch on from the stands during last Friday’s FCC Final at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, but had full confidence in his team.

“During a radio interview the night before I said that Rundell Winchester and Dwight Quintero would score. Defence Force were lucky that I wasn’t playing, because I would have added more. I was always confident in my players to win the title,” ended Marcano.

Point Fortin all the way.

The manager (Steve David), the coach (Carrington) and the players all from Point.

Good community service.

Probably Quintero and Marcano need to switch places. But my real question is: Where is Toric Robinson in the line up? Central's best Defensive midfielder. With Point scoring freely, I feel that a strong DM is needed to break up attacks and pass the ball out of danger.

I'm liking that line up. Real competition for places now. Drogba started on Friday, but he trying to win one of the two AM roles and is up against Marcano, Peltier and Mitchell. Meanwhile, Dwight Pope pushing Oliver and Robinson for the DM role!

You need Oliver, he is a good passer of the ball, leave Robinson to win balls and feed him and he will handle de rest, he can play good under de 2 strikers.

Peltier is very frustrating to watch... his close control and technical ability is outstanding,  his application, attitude and football brain ie decision making is piss poor.

If Terry can sort those three things out you will have a good young player in your squad.

Nothing more frustrating as a coach to see a promising player hold himself back

Toric Robinson is very composed and no fuss type player..does his job well. Chucky's work ethic and application is very good and he also has some ability to him, will definitely keep an eye on him.

Big Dread Marvin Oliver, the Ryan Giggs of the pro league, good lad.  Marcano, quality player.  Quite a midfield you guy's have.

Rundell Winchester , what an athlete, Need's to polish up his passing and decision making but only 19 ... our "Benteke"

What's up with Darryl Trim ? injured ? dropped ?

Goodridge(#3) had a shocker, looked quite bad at Left Back vs Defence Force after Terry switched him from a LCB in a 3-5-2 to a left back in 4-4-2.... I like Jamal Jack , presses hard, reads the game well, nice drive out of CB with the ball on his feet...has to be careful with his rushing , sometimes misses the ball/man and gets caught out of position but I loved his enthusiasm.

Unfortunately I doubt I would be there for tonight or Friday's games. I live in the West and after work to get to Couva in horrible traffic is horrendous.

Pro League should really make those Ato Boldon games a Saturday occasion.

Nice crowd tonight. W.Connection beat North East Stars (I think it was 2-0). 2nd Connection goal was a blinder.
So Connection are the only team with maximum points:- 12pts from 4 games.

Central looked in control of first half and Winchester missed his easiest chance of the night before putting the Sharks in front. Point gave a good fight and had some chances to equalise. Central extended the lead inside the 46th minute and the third came soon after.

Best play of the night however followed a good move by Point which left Williams in no mans land and an empty goal beckoning, but although the striker shot on target, Jamal Jack (I think) came from nowhere to boot the ball to safety. Both teams had more chances to score and Point kept battling to the end.

3-0 may have been a little flattering, but kudos to Central for converting their chances.

7 days in the life of Rundell Winchester:

Tuesday 16th: Replaces Kenwyne Jones to win his first cap
Friday 18th: Scores winning goal to give Central their first trophy and is voted MVP
Tuesday 23rd: Scores his first Pro League hat trick to end Point Fortin's 100% record.

FS please keep Winchester's feet on the ground! He's looking pretty handy to say the least.

One of the notable things about Winny is that he can have an unimpressive game, yet still score. On Friday he got a bollocking at half time for his performance and scored the winner! Last night he missed a sitter early on. None of his three goals were spectacular last night.
But the boy does his job....filling the onion bag. What more can you ask from a striker??

I would estimate the crowd at around 1500, but I'd say 60% were Point supporters with the rest being North East, Connection and Central.

Looks like a good time to be coming through since Kenwyn Jones is 29 and has a couple years left in him. What more you want from a striker depends on your formation and squad depth :p

FS you're being kind, Point had no chance in this game, they attempted to play a very good brand of football but didn't have anyone to finish off some of their midfield play. Central looked stronger and fitter - very efficient and organized. The fact that Joseph and Phillips were never on the pitch made it even tougher for Civic. At 3 nill down, Civic got some chances and should have finished the night with at least one goal. That said Central was very prepared for this encounter. Should be said that Civic plays any extremely good brand of football and its too bad that a couple of big time players let down their coach and most importantly - their fans.

Well, maybe, but I was impressed how they kept going until the 90th minute. Not easy to do when you're 3-0 down, frustrated and it appears that luck is not on your side. They kept fighting until the end.  :beermug:
