Birthday-boy Guerra's goal sinks Reggae Boyz.
By Inshan Mohammed.

Ataullah Guerra celebrated his birthday in fine-style when his seventh minute goal for the Soca Warriors was enough to steal a 1-0 victory over Caribbean rivals Jamaica at the Catherine Hall Stadium in Montego Bay, Jamaica.

Trinidad and Tobago last defeated Jamaica 2-1 at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in May 2001, a CONCACAF Copa Caribe Championship game with goals coming from midfielders Brent Rahim and Angus Eve. However, according to the Soca Warriors Online (SWO) database, Trinidad and Tobago last defeated Jamaica in Jamaica- May 1949, a 2-1 victory over the Reggae Boyz at Sabina Park.

Ataullah Guerra meanwhile, only turned 26 on November 14th, a day before his historic goal sealed the victory over Jamaica in what is dubbed as the 'Caribbean Classico'. The first of two matches to be played between both nations with the second-leg scheduled for November 19th (next Tuesday), the "Red Day' at the Hasely Crawford Stadium from 8pm.

The former San Juan Jabloteh midfielder only got his second start under new T&T head-coach Stehpen Hart. Guerra, now based in Finland and ply his trade with Rovaniemen Palloseura (RoPS) crashed his shot off the underside of the crossbar after captain Kenwyne Jones initial shot was blocked.

Guerra now has 27 caps for his country and a total of 3 goals, his first were against St. Kitts and Nevis, then Cuba and now Jamaica, all of which T&T has won.

Guerra's goal in enough... T&T defeats Jamaica 1-0.
By Shaun Fuentes (TTFA).

Trinidad and Tobago’s senior men’s team timed the occasion of this country’s eight-year World Cup qualification anniversary with a gritty 1-0 victory over Jamaica at the Catherine Hall Stadium in Montego Bay on Friday night.

Today, November 16th , skipper Kenwyne Jones and his teammates will return to Port of Spain where they will be joined by Carlos Edwards and Christopher Birchall on the unforgettable date of the 1-0 victory over Bahrain which qualified T&T for Germany 2006. Friday’s win was also the first win for T&T over the main Caribbean rivals since May 28th 2001.

It took a 5th minute goal by Finnish-based midfielder Ataullah Guerra to separate the teams in what turned out to be a highly competitive encounter which had been dubbed a friendly international.

T&T came out the blocks quickly and almost grabbed the lead inside the first minute when Justin Hoyte ran onto a through ball from Lester Peltier after a neat dummy by Kenwyne Jones on the right of the penalty box but his effort was deflected over for a corner.

That close shave silence the 4800 Jamaican fans at the venue and the sound of Soca could have been heard in the stands emanating  from an earphone four minutes later when Jones neatly slipped behind the defence to pick up a pass by Andre Boucaud and shot against goalkeeper Richard McCallum but Guerra ran into power the rebound over the goal line off the underside off the crossbar.

Jamaica, with seven US-based players in their squad, settled midway through the first half and began to come into their own and tested the T&T backline of Daneil Cyrus, Aubrey David, Sheldon Bateau and Hoyte as head coach Stephen Hart rested Carlyle Mitchell and Radanfah Abu Bakr who eventually made a late entry into the game. Columbus Crew midfielder Kevan George also made his first start for T&T.

Winchester had a couple good looks at goal, one a header which he mis-timed from a Lester Peltier right side delivery after the Slovakia-based player left his man for good on the right flank. The Central FC forward later blasted over bar from close up on a one time effort from Joevin Jones’ ball from the left. Before the break, T&T goalkeeper Jan Michael Williams advanced well off his line to deny Deshorn Brown.

T&T were forced on the backfoot more times than they would have liked in the second half as the Jamaicans pressed for the equalizer. And as the match progressed, the Jamaicans became more physical and were robust in their challenges.

Defender Daneil Cyrus also cleared Michael Seaton’s attempt off the line in the closing ten minutes.

T&T dug deep to maintain a clean sheet and will look to maintain their winning ways in Tuesday’s return friendly at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.

Lester dragging them fellas like puppies !!!!

 :rotfl: :rotfl:

T&T wasteful though and them kinda thing does cost you.

When de iron hot, beat it and finish off them fellas.

We cant take a team with no fire coming off de bench though. We need fire off de bench to keep de team motivated and to make a difference coming on, our bench was a bunch of defensive players that could not add anything expect for defending.

Good result Hart, yuh doing well, keep yuh eye on de ball though and try and bring in 2 or 3 top 17 year old players on de team, just keep them around training with we top players, in foure years they go be 21 and ripping down man.

Soca silences Reggae: Warriors clinch landmark win in Jamaica
By Lasana Liburd (Wired868.com)

On the last occasion that the “Soca Warriors” returned from Jamaica undefeated, after a 2-2 draw in March 2008, then Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation (TTFF) special advisor Jack Warner held a press conference to honour the achievement under then coach Francisco Maturana.

Maybe present Warrior coach Stephen Hart might have a street in San Fernando named after him.

That was a joke. But there was nothing light-hearted about the friendly international result in Montego Bay last night as Trinidad and Tobago edged the “Reggae Boyz” 1-0 for its first win in Jamaica for 64 years.

Guerra scored Trinidad and Tobago’s winner last night against Jamaica.
Trinidad and Tobago last defeated Jamaica on enemy territory on 7 May 1949 when the visitors won 2-1 at Sabina Park.

Or, to put it another way, Hart was not born yet, Eric Williams had just returned to Port of Spain after quitting his job as a professor at Howard University and Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica were both British colonies.

Since that May day in 1949, Trinidad and Tobago played Jamaica 14 times on enemy territory but only managed three draws to go with 11 defeats.

Finland-based midfielder Ataullah Guerra might remember last night’s triumph for an entirely different reason as the former John John resident scored his third goal for Trinidad and Tobago just a day after his 26th birthday.

Hart told the TTFA Media, after the final whistle, that the tackling in Montego Bay was anything but friendly.

Slovan Bratislava winger Lester Peltier was kicked off the ball by Jamaica and FC Dallas midfielder Je-Vaughn Watson without censor by the Panamanian referee John Patti while Guerra and 19-year-old Central FC forward Rundell Winchester also felt the brunt of some full blooded tackles.

“I thought (the referee) could have calmed some of the tackling,” said Hart. “Some of those tackles were nowhere near what a friendly should be.

“Today was a very competitive game; it just wasn’t a competition.”

Guerra put the Warriors ahead in the fifth minute when he clipped his effort off the underside of the bar after Jamaica goalkeeper Richard McCallum spilled an effort from Trinidad and Tobago captain and Stoke City forward Kenwyne Jones.

The Warriors should have doubled their lead but Winchester wastefully headed wide from six yards after a brilliant run down the right flank by Peltier. Peltier and Winchester played on either side of Jones in a 4-3-3 system, which was used for the first time by Hart.

The Boyz came roaring back though.

Watson volleyed wide from a right side cross when it seemed easier to score while Warriors defender Daneil Cyrus cleared off his goalline in the second half to deny 17-year-old Jamaican striker Michael Seaton.

Trinidad and Tobago goalkeeper Jan-Michael Williams also made several crucial interventions from corner kicks as the Warriors held on for a famous triumph.

'We Can't Blame Them' - Schäfer Defends Local-Based, Young Players After Loss To T&T
By Paul Clarke (Jamaica Gleaner)

Jamaica's Reggae Boyz conceded an early first-half goal to crash to a 1-0 defeat to Caribbean arch-rivals Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) in the first of their two-way international friendly football contests, at the Montego Bay Sports Complex Friday night.

Atavila Guerra struck the winning goal in the fifth minute, when he beat Jamaican custodian Richard McCallum to a rebound off Kenwyne Jones' shot and netted.

Head coach Winfried Schäfer said, after just two days work on the training ground, the game served its purpose.

It also provided an international debut for St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) striker Khesanio Hall.

"We had just two training days with a new team; the first 45 minutes was good and we played better in the second half," said Schäfer.

"It was okay for us. As we used mainly young players, local players and we cannot blame them for mistakes," he added.

In the first half, the midfield was dominated by the Soca Warriors, who had four European-based players in their starting line-up, including Stoke City's Jones.

Jermaine Woozencroft's addition for the second half changed the tide completely, with Jamaica forcing the action vastly. The energy and simple play of Woozencroft was the perfect foil for the Reggae Boyz's leading player, central midfielder Je-Vaughn Watson, allowing him to dictate the pace with controlled passing that pushed T&T back against their goal.

The other Jamaican midfielders prior, and even then at times, tried forcing the play and squandered possession far too often with poor passes.

"You must remember that Trinidad came here with four European-based players and we played well in parts, particularly in the second half, and had chances. These young players did what was asked, but we just did not score tonight," said Schäfer.

Tuffy's sizzling effort

Waterhouse striker and local hero Jermaine 'Tuffy' Anderson provided a sizzling effort that sailed over the head of Trinidad keeper Jan Michael Williams in the 13th minute; and again in the 21st - before being substituted at the half.

However, it was an Omar Daley miss at close range which summed up the Jamaicans' night, as the player sent the ball high over the Trinidad goal from close range.

Schäfer summoned young Hall deep into the second half, while the other schoolboy in the squad, Isamnia Cohen of Manchester High, was an unused substitute.

"I said before, this is a chance to give the young players and the local players a chance. We can't blame them like players from Real Madrid and Barcelona," said Schäfer.

The Jamaicans departed the island yesterday for the twin-island republic, where they will contest the second friendly on Tuesday.

Schafer happy with Boyz secondhalf against Warriors, but...
By Paul Reid (Jamaica Observer)

Jamaica's Reggae Boyz lost to their fiercest rival Trinidad and Tobago for the first time in 12 years, but there was no sense of panic in the Jamaican camp after the first of two friendly internationals between the teams was played at the Montego Bay Sports Complex on Friday night.

Ataulla Guerra, who is based in Finland and one of four European-based players who started for the Soca Warriors, scored the game's lone goal in the fifth minute when the visitors pinned Jamaica back in their
own half.

Goalkeeper Richard McCallum failed to hold on to a cross from Kenwyne Jones and it was Guerra who got to it first and scored from close range.

US-based Omar Daley had a great chance to equalise for Jamaica in the 11th minute, but he put the ball over the crossbar from inside the six- yard box after a good combination between Deshorn Brown and Jermaine Anderson provided him with a good cross into the heart of the Trinidad defence.

Both teams flew out of the island yesterday for Tuesday's return leg in Port of Spain and Jamaica's coach Winfried Schafer said he hoped to see some of the players who did not play on Friday.

"We just had two training days with a new team," he pointed out, adding later that he was, "not upset at the team for losing". "This is the first match with the local players against a very good team that has four European-based players," said Schafer.

The German stressed, however, that while the team was allowed to make mistakes, they must continue to improve and "they need to learn now how they play against big teams".

Schafer told reporters they were forced to change the game plan after midfielder Keammar Daley strained his groin during warm-up and had to be replaced by Andrew Vanzie, who he said was "very nervous".

In other substitutions, Montego Bay United midfielder Jermaine Woozencroft and US-based striker Michael Seaton replaced Vanzie and Jermaine Anderson, respectively. Those changes, noted Schafer, worked and in the final 15 minutes, so did the formation which changed from 4-3-3 to 4-4-2. Still, he lamented Jamaica's inability to score goals with regularity.

"We know what our problem is, we are not scoring, that is the problem in Jamaica and we must work at this in training and in the clubs," Schafer said.

He said he was happy with the fight he saw in the team late in the game, especially when they forced a number of free kicks around the box, but scolded team captain Je-Vaughn Watson who deferred the responsibility to take the kicks to others after taking them in training.

Trinidad Canadian coach Stephen Hart said his team was also in a rebuilding mode and they were trying some "mixes and matches".

"This back four is very young and have never played together before and I was quite impressed with what they did," he told the Jamaica Observer.

"We have been struggling to keep a clean sheet and they did that away from home... we are doing a lot of experimenting right now and they are still getting accustomed to me," he said.

Late in the game the home team, cheered on by a sparse crowd, forced a tiring Trinidad team back into their own defence area and forced a number of free kicks just around the 18-yard area.

Seaton and Woozencroft were particularly impressive with their movements around the box, while Jason Johnson was also a thorn in Trinidad's flesh.
