Jones remains with Chicago Fire.
By Shaun Fuentes (Guardian).

As Chicago Fire made cuts to its roster for next season, T&T winger Joevin Jones is guaranteed to be under contract with the American MLS club for 2016. But countryman Daneil Cyrus’ loan deal has expired and he will leave the club.

Thirteen players were left in a safe position with the club but nine other players were declined options.

“History has shown that the key to having a successful team in MLS requires a solid nucleus of players who have been together for some time,” Fire general manager Nelson Rodriguez said. “The players adversely affected are talented individuals as well, who we thank for their contributions to our Club and wish well in their careers going forward.”

Jones has been a force for T&T this year on the international stage and has been in good form for the Fire.

“I think this year was pretty good, especially for the national team,” Jones said. “My first season in the MLS has been a great experience.

“The level has been quite good and the club is ambitious and is at a very good level which I am happy about. I know we will be looking to continue improving and looking to achieve greater results in the new season.”

Commenting more on his performances for T&T which saw the team reach the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Gold Cup and make a two-game unbeaten start to the 2018 World Cup qualifiers, Jones said, “I’m enjoying my form for the national team.

“I think I’ve come out of my shell now with the national team. I am more confident, playing more freely and really focusing on doing my best on what the coach wants and what is best for my teammates with me on the pitch.”

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Sounders FC swaps SuperDraft pick, allocation money for Chicago Fire defender Joevin Jones
SoundersFC.com

Sounders FC shored up its back-line via a draft day trade on Thursday, swapping the 15th overall selection in the MLS SuperDraft and allocation money with the Chicago Fire for left back Joevin Jones.

Per league and club policy, details of the allocation money involved in the deal were not disclosed.

Jones, 24, comes to the Sounders after a solid debut season in MLS last year with the Fire, where he locked down the left side of the defense. Jones appeared in 28 games for Chicago (26 starts) and will likely become an immediate starting option in that spot for the Sounders when preseason camp opens later this month.

“We are excited to add a player of Joevin’s caliber to our roster,” said Sounders FC General Manager & President of Soccer Garth Lagerwey. “Making our roster younger and faster has been a priority for the club this offseason, and acquiring a player like Joevin fits that bill.”

Originally from Carenage, Trinidad & Tobago, Jones came to MLS after four seasons with Trinidad club W Connection. He also appeared in six games on loan with Finnish side HJK Helsinki in 2014.

Jones made his senior debut for Trinidad & Tobago in Sept. 2010 and has earned 37 international caps. He appeared in the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2015 and 2013, and most recently started and logged 90 minutes in each of the team’s World Cup qualifying matches in November.

“Joevin is a player with speed and versatility that can come in and help our team,” said Sounders FC Head Coach Sigi Schmid. “He played well for Chicago this past season and we look forward to seeing what he brings to our roster.”

The Sounders leaned heavily on youngster Oniel Fisher at left back down the stretch last season, with the Jamaican rookie appearing in 12 games during the regular season and two more in the postseason.

Dylan Remick also appeared in 19 games at left back before Fisher took over during the final third of the season.

Joevin Jones Dealt to Seattle in Exchange for Draft Pick, Allocation Money
By Scott Hammer (chicago-fire.com)

Amid a slew of draft-day dealings, the Chicago Fire said goodbye to Trinidadian left back Joevin Jones on Thursday, sending him to Seattle Sounders FC in exchange for general allocation money and the No. 15 pick in the SuperDraft.

A second transaction, this one with the Colorado Rapids, turned that No. 15 selection into the No. 12 pick, where the Fire nabbed centerback Jonathan Campbell out of North Carolina.

The departure of Joevin Jones after a single but solid season in Chicago caught the attention of fans and pundits around the league. Jones played in 28 games with 26 starts in his debut MLS campaign, featuring primarily at left back but also showing an ability to glide into the attack, adding a goal and an assist.

He also impressed with his performances at the international level in 2015, most notably throughout Trinidad and Tobago’s run at the CONCACAF Gold Cup as well as in a Sept. 4 friendly vs. Mexico.

“Joevin Jones was a player that was coveted by many teams around the league,” GM Nelson Rodriguez said following the draft. “Over the course of the entire offseason, there have been steady offers made for his services. Through the combine and as we got closer to the draft, those offers increased.”

The execution of Chicago’s agreement with NYCFC to turn the No. 1 pick into highly touted outside back Brandon Vincent -- who last week was added to Jurgen Klinsmann's U.S. National Team January training camp -- and allocation money sealed Jones’ move to the Emerald City.

“It got to the point that in the scenario that could be viable, securing Brandon Vincent would enable us to move Joevin’s services, get a draft pick that we felt we could convert into a player, which we did, and again add more money to our allocation war chest," Rodriguez explained. "For us, it was a natural flow of events and part of things that we had outlined prior to walking into the draft room today.”

This trade of Joevin highlights everything that meshes US NT interest with MLS interests.

This is great news.  The fact they wanted him enough to trade a pick bodes well for him

The Fire believe they have replaced him with a more intelligent player.

This trade is accommodating to all parties and I suspect both sides feel they have gotten a steal.

As mentioned by asylum, Fire have traded their #1 pick for Vincent who is a direct replacement for Joevin and gotten allocation money and a subsequent draft pick for Jones. His departure also opens up a valuable International roster spot that they intend to fill.

Seattle have gotten a versatile, proven commodity in the MLS (albeit one season), still young with room for growth. They have also seemingly solved their year long quandary at left back and all it cost them was a 15th pick and some allocation money. No brainer.

THE BEATINGS WILL CONTINUE UNTIL MORALE IMPROVES

The other thing I'm trying to figure out is whether Jeremy Gunn is a boss recruiter, or whether Klinsmann has a bias for identifying West Coast talent for direct promotion to the NT, at the expense of other locations?!

Who knows? Maybe this should serve as a lesson to Woo Ling that he should go to college! Which, incidentally, is an item that separates him from De Silva.

Who is older? Levi Garcia or Woo Ling?

Seattle is an excellent club to be a part of, great organization in a city that rallies behind the club. Not to mention they're one of the better teams in the MLS. With Fire he was logging a lot of minutes and that had a positive impact in his development, I hope he doesn't go to the Sounders and ride pine.

Jones excited about Seattle switch.
TTFA Media.

Trinidad and Tobago Midfielder Joevin Jones says he excited about his new move to Seattle Sounders in the American MLS but he is saddened that he has to leave a city that he had become attached to.

Jones was Seattle’s 15th overall SuperDraft pick on Thursday. The 24-year-old former W Connection player made 28 appearances in his lone season for Chicago. He scored his first MLS goal in a 3-2 win over Toronto FC.

“I’m excited about this move,” Jones told TTFA Media on Thursday.

“But I’m just a bit down knowing that I have to go to a new city and settle with new people especially after I had settled in Chicago and I grew to like the city.. But that’s part of it and it’s the life of a professional footballer.”

Jones will now be teaming up with American forward Clint Dempsey and Nigerian forward Obafemi Martins who has in the past played with Inter Milan, Newcastle, Birmingham City, VFL Wolfsburg and has 38 appearances for Nigeria, also appearing at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

“I’m looking forward to a good season and playing alongside Martins and Dempsey. These are two strong players and I think the squad will be a formidable one for the coming season. They have a good record and I will be looking to help them achieve more success this season,” said the Carenage-born player.

Jones also spoke about the upcoming year for the Trinidad and Tobago national team.

“It’s a huge year for us. Obviously I am still disappointed about now qualifying for the Copa America. But we have a lot to look forward to in 2016. The first aim is to get six points in the two games against St Vincent/Grenadines in March and start looking ahead to the final round. It will be anything but easy but I think we have the ability to get back on the right footing and enjoy a solid year on the international stage,” Jones added.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Scouting Report: Joevin Jones
By Dave Clarke (sounderatheart.com)

Let's use the power of the SB Nation network to check in with Hot Time In Old Town to see what they think about losing their former left back to the Seattle Sounders. Sean is their former manager and still a writer there. The following is his scouting report on the Trinidad & Tobago national:

When Joevin Jones was signed by the Chicago Fire, the general reaction was puzzlement. The guy who'd flamed out on two trials with Toronto, of all places? He's the answer at left back? Of course, as the results bore out, there was plenty of reason to be skeptical of the personnel decisions of the then-Fire braintrust of Frank Yallop and his band of merry somnambulists - but the rancor over Jones' signing was short-lived, as he exceeded expectations from the first week of training camp. Now we're left scratching our heads again, this time because he's being shipped out.

Jones is a guy who can play anywhere on the left side of the pitch; most of his reps for the Fire were at left back, but he did feature as an out-and-out winger a few times, and plays that position routinely for Trinidad & Tobago. His primary attributes are fantastic pace, which he leverages by combining well at high velocity through the midfield. His first touch is uneven, and he much prefers dribbling toward the area to crossing. He has the positioning issues typical of a guy who's shifted to defense later in his career, but can often simply outrun those mistakes. He was an uncomfortable fit for the Men in Red in 2015, simply because attacking wingbacks usually struggle when asked to sit back and soak up pressure; the Fire were under siege most of the second half of the season, and Jones had difficulty making an impression under those circumstances.

All that said, Jones did come back from the Gold Cup in a bit of funk, and never really recovered. Rookie Patrick Doody took advantage of that to win the starting left-back job that had been Jones' from preseason. Was Jones making noises about his contract (which is admittedly a steal)? Was he just tired from international play? Did Yallop decide that playing a swashbucking wingback on a bunker-and-counter side was madness, and prefer Doody's safety-first inclinations? Here's the maddening thing about supporting the Fire: We know that we'll never know.

My best guess? Garth Lagerway just fleeced the Fire something fierce, and Jones will become the Leo Gonzalez replacement Seattle's needed for a couple years. I wouldn't be surprised to see Jones on MLS Best XI lists sometime over the next three years.

Joevin Jones, by the Numbers
sounderatheart.com

In 2015, Joevin Jones was one of 47 players in Major League Soccer to accumulate at least 1000 minutes as a starter at a fullback/wingback position. That position alone isn't particularly descriptive; it includes everything from attacking specialists (New England's Chris Tierney is an extreme example) to stay-at-home defenders (for example, Montreal's Donny Toia). When I tell you Tierney created chances from open play 4 times more often than Toia, the comparison more meaningfully contrasts playing style than ability.

What does Joevin Jones bring to the Seattle Sounders?
By Paul Taylor (emeraldcityswagger.com)

The Seattle Sounders made a significant move at the MLS SuperDraft by trading for Joevin Jones, but how exactly will his addition impact the team?

The Seattle Sounders understand the MLS SuperDraft is somewhat of a crapshoot. Compared to the likes of the NFL and NBA, the chances of a selection panning out are often lower.

As such, the Sounders should be commended for Thursday’s trade, when they acquired Joevin Jones from the Chicago Fire. In fact, you could almost accuse Seattle of daylight robbery, as all they had to give up in return was the 15th overall pick and allocation money.

Jones immediately strengthens the defense at the left back position. As coach Sigi Schmid told Matt Pentz of The Seattle Times: “(He) checked all the boxes in terms of things we’re looking for.”

The Trinidad and Tobago international’s addition is a tremendous coup for the Sounders. Chicago fielded multiple offers during Thursday’s draft.

While Jones is undoubtedly an upgrade for the Sounders, how much depends on who you speak to. For example, former Fire coach Frank Yallop believes Jones is close to being the best left back in MLS.

However, some pundits believe the 24-year old does not cross the ball enough, something which is often expected of fullbacks. In addition, he sometimes has positional issues, although he can normally overcome this, due to his excellent speed.

Ultimately, the Sounders are thrilled by what Jones brings to the Pacific Northwest. As General Manager & President of Soccer Garth Lagerwey told soundersfc.com: “We are excited to add a player of Joevin’s caliber to our roster.

“Making our roster younger and faster has been a priority for the club this offseason. Acquiring a player like Joevin fits that bill.”

One last aspect to consider is the Carenage, Trinidad and Tobago native’s versatility. If needed, he is more than capable of playing as a winger, something which he has done both at the MLS and international level.

Joevin Jones isn’t Sounders’ biggest new name, but he’ll be a critical addition
By Matt Pentz (Seattle Times)

The acquisition of Joevin Jones didn’t feature a photo shoot on top of the Space Needle or a special presentation involving the club’s owner, general manager, coach and sporting director.

The Sounders weren’t even able to officially confirm the draft-day trade for the left back until hours after the details leaked out. They and the Chicago Fire were frantically trying to track down the player to give him the news before going public.

But Seattle’s trade of its only first-round SuperDraft pick and allocation money to Chicago for Jones filled the most glaring need in its starting 11.

And though defenders rarely inspire the pomp and circumstance surrounding the signing of U.S. men’s national team forward Jordan Morris last week, the addition of Jones was an important bit of business, as well.

Outside backs always play influential roles on Sigi Schmid’s teams. Sounders sporting director Chris Henderson and longtime U.S. national team standby Cobi Jones played there for Schmid’s UCLA Bruins, and Robbie Rogers for his Columbus Crew. DeAndre Yedlin has been the highest-profile example on the MLS Sounders, but Schmid has always relied on talented two-way speedsters to stretch the field.

The need is especially pressing given the tactical tinkering likely to define Seattle’s first few months of this campaign.

Schmid has hinted that the Sounders will experiment with a three-forward formation in lieu of last year’s 4-4-2. And while chemistry is being developed and partnerships defined, versatile defenders who can both push forward and cover for mistakes at the back will be invaluable.

“Outside backs, even in a 4-4-2, in today’s day and age, outside backs have become far more important and more complete players,” Schmid said Monday.

“The outside backs see more of the ball; sometimes your initial buildup coming out of the back is through them. When you look around the world and see different outside backs, there are guys who are instrumental in their teams’ ability to retain possession.”

The opening at left back developed in part because of Leo Gonzalez’s age — the 35-year-old signed with Herediano in his native Costa Rica last month — and Dylan Remick’s inconsistency late last season. That a right-footed rookie, Oniel Fisher, was the team’s best defensive option on the left during playoff time spoke volumes.

“In the last two seasons, Dylan has had some good moments,” Schmid said. “He’s also had some moments where it hasn’t gone as well. I think Dylan is stronger having gone through that experience.”

Jones still enters preseason camp as a clear No. 1 on the depth chart. The 24-year-old has been easy to pick out during Seattle’s first two practice sessions at Starfire Sports Complex — orange cleats and nearly-as-bright hair forming a distinctive blur burning up the left sideline.

“I’m always composed on the ball,” Jones said when asked to describe his game. “I can dribble, can go down the line and get some good crosses in. I’ve got some speed, as well.”

That last point was the first one most of his new teammates brought up.

“Quick,” goalkeeper Stefan Frei said. “He’s a really quick guy. … First impression: Good player, very athletic and good with the ball at his feet.”

Jones’ hometown of Carenage, Trinidad and Tobago, is a fishing village first and vacation destination second. But the Jones brood is a soccer family. Father Kelvin is a former T&T international, and an uncle also played professionally.

“Football is in our blood,” Joevin said Wednesday with a slightly puffed chest.

Joevin Jones made his international debut at 19 in 2010, coming on as a second-half substitute in a match against Panama. He helped lead W Connection, a club on the southern part of his home island, to a league championship and was named team captain before the 2013 season.

Jones tried his luck abroad, spending part of 2014 on loan with HJK Helsinki in Finland, before hearing of Chicago’s interest.

“The opportunity was a big one for me, to show my worth,” Jones said.

That’ll be the case in Seattle, as well, for a team with legitimate MLS Cup aspirations whose lineup shuffling will only increase the pressure on the back line.

No, the trade for Joevin Jones wasn’t the headliner of the Sounders’ offseason, but it could be an integral part of their 2016 destiny nevertheless.

Seattle Sounders FC’s goalkeeper, Stefan Frei, comments on the play of Joevin Jones during a CONCACAF Champions League Quarterfinals First Leg match against Mexico’s Club America:

“He played well. He is a very, very good player and a great addition for us. He knows when to go forward and he has good pace. He is also a good defender. He can shuttle players out wide and if they take it out wide he still has the pace to catch up and then close it down. I am really happy he is on the squad. Like I said it is going to take us a little bit of time to gel for all of us again and get into the rhythm of things but I’m happy for all of the guys in front of me.”

Joevin Jones' debut was solid yet unspectacular

Joevin Jones' debut was solid yet unspectacular
By Ryan Cowper (sounderatheart.com)

After a promising preseason, Tuesday's match against Club America was in a way going to define our expectations of Joevin Jones this season. This was, in all likelihood, going to be the premier level of opposition that he'll face this season as long as Club America brought a majority of their first team. In that respect, Club America did not disappoint as they pitted not just Mexican national team right back Paul Aguilar but also Colombian national team striker Darwin Quintero directly against the youngster from Trinidad and Tobago.

And Joevin Jones more than held his own on both sides of the ball.

He combined for 2 interceptions in the box and a tackle on Aguilar in the defensive end to pair with 8 recoveries. He was an active defender on the left and kept Aguilar from doing damage with his passing in the Sounders' half.

On the offensive side of the ball, Jones was a box-to-box player holding down the left side of the Sounders' tactical schema single handedly. But he accomplished this with much more than his dribbling and passing, as Jones made a concerted effort to push play back into the center of the pitch and the waiting feet of both Clint Dempsey and Andreas Ivanschitz. The centralized approach worked to suck the America forwards into the middle on defense, neutralizing their ability to get in behind Jones as he did made his forays deep into the opposition half.

This had it's most dramatic effect on Darwin Quintero. The Colombian was most dangerous when making runs from outside in trying to move off the back shoulder of the Sounders line. When he was forced to come inside to defend by Jones' almost steadfast approach to pushing play into the middle, he became largely ineffective on offense. Meanwhile Jones' pace and aggressive stance on the left kept Paul Aguilar isolated wide, opening space for both Dempsey and Ivanschitz to attack the space between himself and the America centerbacks separating them.

While nothing Jones did was particularly flashy, he showed conservatism and a commitment to the gameplan on offense to go with a commanding control of his own portion of the pitch on defense. While that's not to say he was flawless because he made mistakes in either phase of the game --  like every other Sounder on the pitch -- if this is the ability he can bring to the Sounders week-in and week-out, I can't wait to see what we can do against MLS quality oppositions.

Review of Joevin Jones' performance vs Club America
« Reply #86 on: February 27, 2016, 04:26:40 PM »
I heard a considerable debate about the merits of Jones' game on Tuesday, but I can definitively state that after my analysis, he played above MLS average in my opinion.

Jones announced himself in the 3rd minute with a calm control while he retained possession under pressure. In the 17th minute he showed range getting forward and putting in a well-placed cross. I was really impressed with his 1v1 defending, and he does it with a combination of athleticism (28th minute shutting down the entire right side of America's offense) and intelligence (67th just beating an attacker to the spot in the box to earn a goal kick). On defense Jones looked calm and assertive.

Jones did have a number of mistakes, and I noted some unforced errors he will need to fix, like his poor pass in the 7th minute. The main issues I had with his performance revolve around decision making. Multiple times (55th, 64th) Joevin was caught in possession. Because the wing is so wide open with no committed wide midfielder in front of him he will need to learn where the release point in the formation is. If that is going to be a center mid square pass, a forward down the line, or even the opposite corner flag he needs to recognize these outlet points and use them if he gets in trouble instead of taking on multiple opponents and losing possession. A good team will (and CA did) counter immediately into the holes he leaves when advancing. Jones needs to have a plan, which seemed lacking on multiple occasions when he attacked to the corner of the 18 and was unsure if he should cross or drop the ball.

One factor that continually impressed me about Jones was just how essential he was to what the Sounders were pulling off. I am not sure how many people in the league would be able to do what he did. Having a guy completely cover about 75 yards of the field allowed so many good things to happen. His pace and quality play tilted the entire field away from his side and limited the numbers that America was able to push on his wing. Maybe most importantly it kept the SSFC center mids tight to the middle of the field. This was huge, as it stopped the team from getting stretched and let Alonso and Friberg play destroyer in the middle. Any buildup had to be over the top or off counters, and I believe Jones was a big reason CA's only goals came from a break out and when the Sounders were stretched and fatigued.

Watched most of the game last night.. Joevin's excellent pass out of defense is what lead to the first goal. But right after he was left in no man's land between two players and could not make up his mind and they equalized mere seconds after going ahead.

This team plays without a left midfielder as Dempsey starts on the left, but is clearly a central player. It showed a few times as Joevin was caught up field, and the team exploited the space he had left. This is something that the team has to solve in training, possibly changing their formation.

They played against a team that scouted them well and exploited their weaknesses....

That being said they are still in Pre-Season so it would be hard on them to really compete against a team in full season. MLS has to do something about that if they want to realistically challenge in this tournament in the future.

On Joevin's game.... 50-50. A few mistakes but mostly solid. Got in some good covering and tracking and a few 1 vs 1 tackles. I expect his play.....and the team's play to improve. Against lesser MLS opposition these problems might not even be evident.
