Top 50 Calypsonians of the 20th century!
« on: January 24, 2014, 04:08:32 AM »
It is mostly a very credible list but I don't understand why Machel Montano is on the list.
Yes I know that he started his career singing Calypso before switching to Soca but he is no where nearing being one of the top 50 Calypsonians of the 20th Century! He won't even make my Top 150 List. Machel's name should be replaced by Swallow from Antigua , Arrow from Montserrat or Becket from St Vincent.

Who is the best calypsonian? | The Trinidad Guardian Newspaper

Who is the best calypsonian of the 20th century? This question has been asked so many times and no one has ever been able to come up with a conclusive answer.

Dating back to the early 1900s calypsoes have been so diverse, topical and poignant it is a monumental challenge to chose the best calypsonian in almost a century of the art form. Dubbed “the voice of the people,” world and T&T history, indeed the history of mankind, can be traced through every major epoch of civilisation.

Names like Atilla the Hun, Beginner, King Radio, Executor, Railway Douglas, Tiger and Spoiler are but a few etched in the annals of calypso. Since Independence in 1962, that dynasty has been enhanced by the likes of Kitchener, Sparrow, Bomber, Terror, Lord Shorty, Shadow, Merchant, Duke, Chalkdust, Black Stalin, Cro Cro, Sugar Aloes and Calypso Rose.

To arrive at the best calypsoes of the 20th century, Trinbago Unified Calypsonians Organisation (Tuco) embarked on an exercise to identify the Top 50 calypsonians of the period. The list makes interesting reading and you can e-mail your thoughts, responses, and probable omissions to bloodline@guardian.co.tt
