It would be nice to rebuild Mahaica for football. But I am not sure that will work. First of all, who owns Mahaica. Will other events scheduled when rebuilt. What type of events. Is Mahaica used for cricket also?
I knew I'd heard the name - they're in the process of rebuilding it - http://newsday.co.tt/sport/0,173203.html
Apparently, they've been rebuilding it for a couple of years! There were comments made at Akeem's funeral. The pitch is superb at the moment, but it is well protected. Once the refurbishments are completed, it will go back to being a community field and the guys I spoke to down in Point are concerned that the pitch will be ruined.
This whole concept of community fields is flawed. SPORTT invest money to create a decent venue, but it belongs to the Regional Corporations who don't understand football and insist the fields are available for all. Same problem at Ojoe Rd.
Create an open football field for everyone, but preserve your "Wembleys" for Pro & Super League football, Regional cup finals, school cup finals etc.
There must be an element of achievement and excitement about playing on an elite field. That's part of the whole cup final dream. If you can play their everyday, what's the big deal?
