Barbados survive Leeward scare, advance to semis
By JOEL BAILEY Tuesday, February 11 2014
T&T Newsday

BARBADOS SURVIVED a massive scare to defeat the Leeward Islands by four wickets at the Queen’s Park Oval in St Clair yesterday to top Zone B and seal a spot in this week’s NAGICO Super50 Cricket Tournament’s semi-final round.

The Leewards, who ended the preliminary round stage without a point, won the toss and elected to bat but they crumbled against the spin pair of Ashley Nurse (six wickets for 29 runs) and Sulieman Benn (2/15) to be bundled out for 103 in 39.5 overs.

Opener Kraigg Brathwaite stayed until the end, with a painstaking 29 not out (98 balls, one four) while Rashidi Boucher notched 25 (42 balls, three fours and a six) as Barbados reached 104/6 off 34.5 overs. Leg spinner Anthony Martin and the pace duo of Kelbert Walters and Lionel Baker each grabbed two wickets for the Leewards.

Barbados completed the group stage with 11 points, with Trinidad and Tobago on 10 and the Combined Campuses and Colleges (CCC) on seven.

With the result, Barbados will meet Guyana (Zone B’s runners-up) on Thursday, 24 hours after the first semi-final between hosts Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica on Wednesday. The final is scheduled for Saturday.

The Leewards got a slow, but steady opening stand of 46 between captain Kieran Powell (34 off 65 deliveries) and Montcin Hodge (14) but the medium pace of Dwayne Smith forced Hodge to drive low to short extra cover.

Powell struck three out of the seven boundaries in the Leewards’ innings (Jahmar Hamilton had two fours, while Hodge and Devon Thomas had one apiece). And the Leewards’ left-handed opener was the first of off-spinner’s Nurse scalps, as he was leg-before to a straight delivery.

Sylvester Joseph, who did nothing to justify his recall, was run out by a direct throw, to the bowler’s end, by Jason Holder before left-handed Mali Richards, who looks a pale imitation of his legendary father Sir Vivian, backed away to cut a turning ball but edged to the wicketkeeper.

Jahmar Hamilton looked visibly upset when he was given out leg-before and, by the time the second powerplay began, the Leewards were tottering at 100/5 after 35 overs.

What followed was a horrendous collapse, with Nurse and Benn holding sway.

Hayden Walsh was neatly stumped, Devon Thomas was adjudged leg-before, Justin Athanaze was beaten by the flight and was bowled, Kelbert Walters spooned a catch to midwicket and Lionel Baker was leg-before playing a huge swipe.

Smith played loosely at one early in his innings and was bowled by Walters before the interval (which saw Barbados on 34/1 off 10 overs with Boucher on 15 and Brathwaite on 10).

The scoring came to a near halt with Martin and off-spinner Athanaze in effect, with Martin removing both Boucher and Jonathan Carter via the leg-before route.

In between, Athanaze could have gotten the wicket of Brathwaite when he was on 18, but his first aggressive shot was embarrassingly dropped by Walsh at point.

Brathwaite returned to his anchor role but wickets fell around him – captain Kevin Stoute’s LBW decision looked slightly harsh as the ball appeared to be going down leg, but Shane Dowrich poked one to Hamilton behind the stumps and Carlos Brathwaite saw his off-stump cartwheeling by Walters.

And it was left to Man of the Match Nurse to get the winning runs, with two to square leg off Baker.

Red Force unafraid of unbeaten Jamaica
By STEPHON NICHOLAS Tuesday, February 11 2014
T&T Newsday

RED FORCE coach, Kelvin Williams, says his team is unafraid of Jamaica who they come up against tomorrow in the Nagico Super50 semi-finals at the Queen’s Park Oval, Port of Spain.

Yesterday, Barbados predictably whipped the Leeward Islands to take top spot in Zone B as TT finished runners-up.

The results sets up a meeting for the hosts with Zone A winners Jamaica who qualified from their group with three straight victories.

Despite missing their West Indies stars Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels, Jamaica have been getting the job done with contributions all- around. Asked about TT’s chances against their unbeaten opponents, coach Williams exuded confidence ahead of the mouth-watering clash.

“I think to win the tournament we have to beat everybody that is in front of us. Jamaica will be a good game because they’re three-out-of-three (in Zone A) and they’re the form team. At the end of the day it’s what happens on the day that counts and we’re growing in confidence,” he pointed out.

After losing their opening match against Barbados, TT have reeled off resounding wins against the Leeward Islands (five wickets) and Combined Campuses and Colleges (seven wickets) to book their spot in the last four.

And with momentum going their way, the Red Force coach implored his players to not get carried away with their last two results.

“The most important things is we can’t be complacent. So long as we’re not complacent we will get there (in the final),” he continued.

Williams expressed satisfaction with the effort of his new batting opening pair of Evin Lewis (44 from 27 balls) and Lendl Simmons (38 from 41) who put on 65 runs for the first wicket in their last match vs CCC.

“We tried something (changing the lineup) and it worked. I was quite pleased with what I saw. We were confident that Evin would come good last night (Sunday),” he explained.

Commenting on the form of batsman Adrian Barath - who after scores of 10 and zero was demoted from his opening spot - Williams says he is keeping faith with the 23-year-old.

The right-handed Barath went caught and bowled for just one against CCC as his batting slump continued.

“Barath is one of our major players an I expect him to come good. The mood in the camp is quite good and it’s nice to have that gelling in the team. The mood is fantastic,” he pointed out.

The TT coach sang the praises of his bowling unit which has been in devastating form in their last two fixtures. The pacers Ravi Rampaul, Dwayne Bravo and Rayad Emrit have been hitting their line and lengths while ace spinner Sunil Narine and part-timer Jason Mohammed are impacting as well.

“For TT, the bowlers have always done tremendous work. We have to come back and do it again (on Wednesday). We’re taking it one game at a time,” he declared.

Bravo confident ahead of semis
By Roger Seepersad roger.seepersad@trinidadexpress.com
Story Created: Feb 10, 2014 at 9:16 PM ECT

Trinidad and Tobago skipper Dwayne Bravo is proud of his team’s seven-wicket demolition of the Combined Campuses and Colleges (CCC) in their NAGICO Super50 Zone B match at Queen’s Park Oval, Port of Spain on Sunday, but insisted that they will have to up the ante for the semi-finals.
Jamaica booked their place in the semis by topping Zone A while Zone A runners-up Guyana are also through despite losing to Jamaica in their final group game.

The Jamaicans will face T&T in tomorrow’s semi at the Oval while Guyana will face Barbados on Thursday.
The hosts were under pressure throughout the tournament after losing to Barbados by 28 runs in their opening game.
Their five-wicket win over the Leeward Islands in a low-scoring game at Shaw Park in Tobago followed by Sunday’s clinical performance is an indicator that they are improving, but Bravo believes they can do better.
Speaking after his team’s easy win on Sunday, Bravo said: “We are a team that always wants to keep improving and keep setting ourselves high standards and raising that bar. We are always under pressure to perform because of the standards we set ourselves as a team but more often than not we deliver under pressure.

“We started well with the new ball,” the captain continued, “and put some pressure on the CCC batsmen. The new ball bowlers got some wickets as well so that was key. It was good we put pressure on them early and then we capitalised on it.

“We have to beat all teams to win the competition. I think once we play to our true potential, we will win...it does not matter who we face.”
Key to the T&T victory over CCC was Jason Mohammed’s part-time off-spin which yielded three for 19 from ten overs including a wicket from his first delivery.
Mohammed was also confident he and his teammates can raise their game another notch for the semis.

“It is going to be a big game (the semifinal) but we will go into that game with a lot of confidence after two wins. The team will be boosted. The crowd will come out. It is going to be a little bit of pressure but I think the guys are going to rise to the occasion,” said Mohammed.
“I think it was a very good spell. In that situation there were two left-handers at the crease and the captain decided to use my off-spin, and it worked out well in the end,” he added.

Coach Williams says T&T ready for semi-final duel

By Roger Seepersad roger.seepersad@trinidadexpress.com
Story Created: Feb 12, 2014 at 12:01 AM ECT

Trinidad and Tobago coach Kelvin Williams is expecting a tough battle against Jamaica in today’s NAGICO Super50 semi-final at Queen’s Park Oval, Port of Spain from two p.m., but is confident his players can pull off the win after fighting hard to reach the knockout stage.
Both teams have a lot of respect for each other but go into the semi on the back of contrasting performances.

The Jamaicans strolled out on top of Zone A with three wins in three games including some high-scoring matches against dethroned champions Windward Islands and Guyana. They also beat Ireland in Zone A.
T&T had to bounce back from an opening round loss to Barbados to qualify as the second-placed team in Zone B having won two low-scoring matches against the Leeward Islands and the Combined Campuses and Colleges (CCC). Barbados qualified at the top of Zone A and will face Guyana in tomorrow’s semi-final.
Despite what their respective records show, both the Jamaican coach Junior Bennett and T&T coach Williams expect today’s match to be intense.
Williams said his charges are in good spirits following their win over the CCC, and believes his team is beginning to peak at the right time.

“We normally have a good bowling unit but the batting falls short at times. But the way we executed against CCC, although it was a small target, tells me things are getting back on track. It was pleasing to see the batsmen go out there and attack the bowling the way they did.
“Jamaica is a good side. They are 3-0 up and they played some fantastic cricket but we need to beat them to move forward. There are some interesting players there,” Williams noted, making special mention of centurion Nkrumah Bonner.
“We are looking forward to a competitive game against them and the way we are playing I think we started to peak at the right time.”

Asked about T&T’s batting after they lost five wickets in chasing 140 against the Leewards and then three wickets in their chase of 98 against the CCC, skipper Dwayne Bravo said they were not too concerned.
“We have good enough batsmen on the team. Tomorrow (today) is a whole new game, new situation. We look forward to the challenge. It could possibly be another low-scoring game but I think who holds their nerves better will win the game,” the T&T skipper added.
Bennett and Jamaica wicket-keeper Carlton Baugh are both expecting a tough time against the hosts.

“We are expecting a very competitive match,” said Bennett.
“It is two quality teams and we are just looking to go out there and play some good consistent cricket. It (T&T) has a good attack. They have a good all-round team so we just have to treat it that way. They are a good quality team and this is a semi-final so it is going to be a high-intensity game,” the Jamaican coach added.

Baugh said T&T are a dangerous team at home.
“It is a very big occasion. Trinidad over the years have always been a good team especially when they have the home advantage, but nonetheless we are playing good cricket and trying to play our best game yet.”

Nurse: Consistency the key
Story Created: Feb 11, 2014 at 11:58 PM ECT

Barbados off-spinner Ashley Nurse described his match-winning six for 29 against the Leeward Islands as one of his better performances for his country, adding that it did not come about by simple luck and chance.
Speaking to the media following Barbados’ four-wicket win at Queen’s Park Oval on Monday night, Nurse said that after a mediocre showing against Trinidad and Tobago in the opening match, when he bowled seven overs for 46 runs with four wides and a no ball, he went back to the nets, put in the hard work and reaped the rewards on Monday.

“I just tried to be as consistent as possible because in the first game I did not have a good night. I was bowling a bit too straight and got a lot of turn and the balls were just going down the leg side so I just tried to bowl just outside the off-stump and bowl a fuller length,” Nurse said.
“After the Trinidad game I worked very hard in the nets on my line and lengths and tried to vary...bowl slower, bowl faster but with a fuller-pitched ball.
“It was one of the better games I had for Barbados for sure. I did the job today. Today was just my day.”
Nurse is also hoping to attract the attention of the regional selectors in the future and believes consistency will be the key.

“I am just trying to be as consistent as possible and hopefully the selectors will look at me in the future.”
The spinner was pleased to help his team clinch a semi-final spot.
“Anytime Barbados play, there is always high expectations that we will be in the last four or last two so it is nice to make the fans at home happy by making the semi-finals and living up to those expectations.”
Looking ahead to their semi-final clash with Guyana at the Oval tomorrow, Nurse said: “It is a simple game. Whoever bats the best will win the game. There is really no big difference in the teams. The batting is there, the spinners are there, the pacers are there.”
The Leewards also put in an excellent bowling performance, with leg-spinner Anthony Martin taking two wickets for eight runs in ten overs.
While they did well to put Barbados under pressure in a small chase, Martin conceded that they just did not have enough runs on the board.

“It was a good pitch to bowl on. The guys gave it a good effort but the runs were not there for us to really defend. We spilled two easy catches and that could have been a twist in the game and made it a little more difficult for Barbados. Barbados panicked a bit in the end to get 104 but the runs were not enough,” said Martin.

Red Force look to stop Jamaicans

A confident Trinidad and Tobago will battle Jamaica in the first semi-final of the Nagico Regional Super50 tournament today from 2pm at the Queen’s Park Oval. Yesterday, members of the T&T team, affectionately referred to as the Red Force, were hard at work and manager of the team Manohar Ramsaran said the players were ready for today’s battle. He said: “The boys have been working very hard at their game and they have been very focused on the task at hand.” Without sounding over confident, Ramsaran said they were quietly optimistic, but more importantly, they were aware of their opposition. “The boys are quietly confident going into the match. However, they are aware that the Jamaicans are strong and they know that they have to be at the top of their game to advance to the finals,” Ramsaran said.

Ramsaran noted that all the players were all fit and there were no injury concerns. “This means that the selectors will have a full squad from which to choose.” As to whether there will be changes, Ramsaran said that decision would be made at the team meeting which was held last night. T&T reached the semi-finals by finishing second to Barbados in group B. They lost one and won two of their preliminary round matches, while the Jamaicans topped Group A with three wins in their three matches. T&T will hope that home conditions work in their favour, as the pitch is expected to favour the slower bowlers. At the start of the tournament the pitch had more pace and bounce but with the dry weather currently being experienced and the regular use of the pitch, it has slowed down. Ramsaran said the pitch was looking good and he was hoping that it will play much better than in the last two matches.

“The pitch is looking pretty good. They are using the one to the east of the square and this was playing well all the time. We are hoping for a good pitch and for our bowlers to utilize it properly.”
Another factor that may assist the locals is the fact that a huge crowd is expected to show for the game. Checks with the T&T Cricket Board (TTCB) ticket office revealed that 75 per cent of the tickets for the match have already been sold, guaranteeing a good crowd. Tomorrow the second semi-finals featuring Barbados and Guyana will be played at the same venue.

End of over 23 (1 run) Jamaica 41/9

JE Taylor 5 (6b 1x4 0x6)

RR Emrit 6-0-19-3

Emrit to Richardson, OUT, and the Jamaica's misery comes to an end, length delivery outside off, stays on the crease and goes for a swing towards cover, mistimes it towards deep point, Lewis took that without any trouble, Emrit gets his fourth for the night.

Jamaica 49 (24.2 ov)  All out

T&T run Chase Next

0.6
Taylor to Lewis, OUT, Taylor strikes, breakthrough? short of a length delivery on off, he goes back for the pull, mistimes it towards mid-on, Russell runs back and holds it, not looked happy and for obvious reasons, no one celebrating that too much.

E Lewis c Russell b Taylor 0 (3b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

T&T 1/1

End of over 2 (9 runs) Trinidad & Tobago 10/1 (40 runs required from 48 overs, RR: 5.00, RRR: 0.83)

I Khan 1 (4b 0x4 0x6)

DE Bernard 1-0-9-0
JE Taylor 1-0-1-1

2.4
Taylor to Khan, OUT, that's the second one for him, length delivery which moves a bit in from outside off, he leans forward for a drive but misses the line and struck infront of middle and off, still this match has something to cheer up for the Jamaican fans or its just the matter of time?

I Khan lbw b Taylor 1 (8b 0x4 0x6) SR: 12.50

Oval pitch no good. :bs:

Now let's say T&T wins this  Super 50. Yuh think maybe they will change the rules ? Maybe call the teams franchises ? Or maybe start a draft and allow some overseas players? Nah I don't think they will want to mess with a good thing just because T&T winning. ::)
