Defending national two-day champions Powergen got the new campaign off to a winning start, as spin bowler Ancil Bhagan carved his way through the Clarke Road batting to give his team a five-wicket win yesterday at the Wilson Road Recreation Ground in round one.

Bhagan then went on a rampage, grabbing 8/36 to bowl out Clarke Road for 138. Ryan Ramdass fought hard for Clarke Road, scoring 60. Chasing a meagre 60 to win, Powergen stumbled its way to 62/5 as Gregory Mahabir finished on an unbeaten 27.
At the Queen’s Park Oval, Parkites all-rounder Daron Cruickshank was effective with both bat and ball to give Queen’s Park a comfortable eight-wicket win over Moosai. Cruickshank scored 87 in the first innings and ended with match figures of 6/32.
