Bootan guides Hillview to victory

Jesse Bootan slammed 48 runs and snatched four for 28 to lead defending PowerGen Secondary Schools Cricket League (SSCL) Premier Division Champions Hillview College to a 21-run win over Vishnu Boys Hindu College in their round seven game at Esmeralda Recreation Ground, yesterday.
Bootan hit five sixes and two fours in a 75-run stand with his brother Jonathan (28) to lead Hillview to 177 all out off their reduced 45 overs.
In reply, Vishnu were dismissed for 156 in 42.3 overs, but despite their loss, Vishnu stayed at the top of the standings, with fellow title contenders Barrackpore West Secondary in second.

Shiva Boys crowned

A seven-wicket-haul from left-arm orthodox spinner Isaiah Gomez (7/20), partnered with a captain's knock of 51 from Nicholas Ali, sealed a commanding 82-run victory and the capture of Shiva Boys Hindu College first-ever PowerGen Secondary Schools Cricket League (SSCL) premiership division crown, at PowerGen Grounds, Penal, on Tuesday.

Against three-time winners Hillview College in the seventh and final round of matches, Shiva Boys recovered from a shaky start and rallied to a fair total of 191 all out after 49.1 overs.

Hillview, already out of contention for this year's crown, showed some glimmers of hope from Andrew Rambaran (38) and opening batsman Rickash Boodram (33) during their chase, but was soon rattled out for just 109 after 24.3 overs.

Shiva earned 18 points from the win and ended the season with 109 points. St Benedict's College got past Fatima College by 153 runs at Fatima grounds in Port of Spain and picked up a maximum 20 points to also end with 109 points.

However, Shiva won the title based on the head-to-head rule as Shiva defeated St Benedict's by four wickets earlier in the season.

Secondary schools cricket is back after two-year hiatus

OVER 5,000 secondary school students will get to participate in the 2023 Secondary Schools Cricket League (SSCL), which returns on Thursday after a two-year hiatus.

The last time the 50-over competition was held was in March 2020, which came to an early end owing to the covid19 pandemic. It was this same reason which led to it not being held at all for the following two years.

SSCL president Nigel Maraj said the last two years have been a challenge, especially for student athletes.

“...Some of whom were on the verge on being selected for national youth development teams when competitions were curtailed in March 2020.”

He said the league, created in 1962, aims to be the leading grassroots sports organisation for cricket in TT, and has produced many talented, professional cricketers.

“As a responsible organisation, our mission is to provide equal opportunities to pursue their hopes and dreams of one day becoming international cricketers.”

Thanking PowerGen for being the main sponsor of the league, he called on other corporate entities to support other national sport organisations to “assist our children in their goals their dreams in what ever fields that they choose.”

He urged the public to attend matches and support the students.

And to the participants, he said: Play hard, play well and enjoy the wonderful game.

PowerGen general manager Dr Haydn Furlonge said sport is one of the company’s “main pillars” when it comes to corporate social social responsibility activities.

Having sponsored the league since 1996, he said the company remains committed to the cause as it is “the largest single sponsorship PowerGen makes on an annual basis.

“Cricket really is a part of who we are.

“We are really glad to be the lead sponsor this year yet again.”

He said the league brings out the best in TT’s youth cricketers. The first match will begin at 10.30 am at the Queen’s Park Oval, Port of Spain. Defending champions Shiva Boys Hindu College will take on Fatima College.

Fatima crush Shiva Boys' by 139 runs in Secondary Schools' cricket opener.

Fatima College had a wonderful start to their 2023 PowerGen Secondary Schools Cricket League campaign on Thursday as they romped to an emphatic 139-run victory over defending champions Shiva Boys’ Hindu College when round one action bowled off at Queen’s Park Oval, Port of Spain.

Zachary Siewah’s stellar knock of 98 propelled Fatima to 237/5 from 44 overs, batting first. The strong total proved too much for the 2019 winners, who failed to show much fight and eventually capitulated for 98 in 38.2 overs.

Siewah led the charge with the bat for Fatima and was ably assisted by Niall Maingot (41), Joshua Davis (27) and Adrian Mahase (25 not out).

Sachin Nandlal (3/36) and Raoul Goolie (2/42) were Shiva Boys’ best bowlers.

In their turn at the crease, Shiva Boys’ lost wickets in quick succession, with Goolie (24) finishing as their top scorer.

Fatima’s Davis also shone with the ball as he snapped up 2/6 from nine overs, which included five maidens. Aditya Ramdeen (2/18), Caiden Mack (2/29) and Siewah (2/20) also bagged two wickets each in the one-sided affair. In the other premiership opener, Presentation College Chaguanas also recorded a heavy 160-run win over Vishnu Boys’ Hindu College in Endeavour, Chaguanas.

Two half-centuries from Dillon Balkaran (52) and Adam Furlonge (51) launched ‘Pres’ to 236/8, with Rajesh Maharaj (31) and Justin Jagessar (29) also contributing.

Aidan Lakhansingh (3/52) and Aaron Basant (2/51) topped Vishnu Boys’ bowling.

In reply, Vishnu Boys’ were dismissed for 76 in 31.3 overs with Sanjicv Balliram (31) leading the vain charge. Presentation’s Zachary Madray (2/7) was their best bowler.

And at Lewis Street in San Fernando, home team Naparima College made amends for their shaky 148 all out from 41 overs performance by dismissing St Mary’s College for 68 in 24 overs, to seal an 80-run triumph.

Naparima batted first and were led by a half-century from Fareez Ali (57) and skipper Kyle Ramdoo (40). Rahul Lakhan (3/29) and Reuel Williams (3/43) were the picks of the bowlers for CIC.

In their turn at the crease, St Mary’s struggled to build partnerships with Rahul Soodeen (11) top scoring. ‘Naps’ Ali showed good form with the ball as well as he took 2/11 and was assisted by Liam Mamchan (2/12).

Round two matches in the premiership, north and south championship bowl off on Tuesday.
