CPL players draft to feature 228 cricketers
ESPNcricinfo staff
March 10, 2014

The players draft for the second edition of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) will be held on April 3 in Kingston, Jamaica, and will include 228 players. In a release, the CPL said 121 overseas players had signed up for the draft, which is more than five times the number of overseas players in the 2013 draft.

English cricketers will feature in the tournament for the first time this year, if drafted in by the franchises, the CPL said. Players from Australia, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa and Sri Lanka have also signed up. West Indies aside, Australia will have the largest representation at the draft, with 30 players lining up, including 15 internationals.

The release said: "The vast majority of Pakistan's T20 World Cup squad has also signed up. New Zealand, South Africa and Sri Lanka are also well represented, and the draft will include several current and former international captains, leading Test stars, T20 specialists and limited-overs legends."

The full list will be made public on March 17. The tournament will be played in July and August. Jamaica Tallawahs had won the inaugural edition, ahead of Antigua Hawksbills, Barbados Tridents, Guyana Amazon Warriors, St. Lucia Zouks and Trinidad & Tobago Red Steel; these same six franchises which will play the 2014 competition.

This team needs a local owner , it will get the population involved and the suggestions above
make sense about player selections.

MS Dhoni woulda been nice , he helped the young indians players and he can help Katawoo. But I guess no IPL indians.
We would need a guy like Brett lee for Marlon also.

CARIBBEAN PREMIER LEAGUE 2014 EXPANDS TO ST. KITTS AND NEVIS
Tue, Mar 11, 2014

Caribbean Premier League

Tuesday 11th March 2014 –

Basseterre, St. Kitts & Nevis: Warner Park, St. Kitts has been chosen as the host of the final, semi-finals and six group-phase matches during the 2014 Caribbean Premier League. The venue, originally built for the 2007 ICC World Cup, has gone undergone a huge renovation in time to welcome the CPL this summer, as the success of the tournament continues to spread across the Caribbean.

The 8,000 capacity ground is set to welcome the CPL for the very first time, giving the people of St. Kitts and Nevis the chance to experience the thrill of the competition first-hand. The people of St. Kitts & Nevis will also be able to enjoy a week of celebration and entertainment put on to support the final, ensuring that the CPL lives up to its reputation as being the Biggest Party in Sport.

Launched last year to sell-out crowds, over 250,000 spectators attended matches across Antigua, Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, Trinidad and St Lucia, whilst a global TV audience of 36 million were entertained by the skills of international stars including Chris Gayle, Kieron Pollard, Ricky Ponting and Muttiah Muralitharan.

In addition to the arrival of world class Twenty20 cricket, the local community of St. Kitts and Nevis is set to reap the economic and social benefits created by the tournament. A recently released report from the Mona School of Business revealed that last year’s competition improved the GDP of all six host islands[1], with a combined impact of US$105m generated across the region.[2]

Warner Park has undergone recent development to enable it to host CPL matches with the construction of state of the art lighting facilities. In addition to being awarded the games, the investment is set to be key to the development of local grassroots projects, with the Ministry of Sport planning to utilise Warner Park’s new capabilities to hold after school programmes for local students.

Pete Russell, Chief Operations Officer of Caribbean Premier League, said:

“We cannot wait to bring the big-hitting excitement of the CPL to Warner Park. By awarding these prestigious matches to St. Kitts and Nevis we are demonstrating that the whole of the Caribbean can celebrate and enjoy the successes of this global tournament. The renovation of the stadium was a key factor in the bid succeeding; the new facilities are second to none, and we’re keen to provide show-stopping cricket to match.”

St. Kitts and Nevis’ Minister of Sports, the Hon. Glen Phillip, said:

“We are delighted to welcome some of the biggest stars in cricket to Warner Park during this year’s competition. Carnival cricket has always been synonymous with the Caribbean, and we’re looking forward to showing an audience of millions around the globe that St. Kitts and Nevis can host a party like no other.”

The Limacol CPL returns in July and August 2014 where Jamaica Tallawahs will defend their title against the St. Lucia Zouks, Trinidad & Tobago Red Steel, Antigua Hawksbills, Guyana Amazon Warriors and Barbados Tridents.

Lycamobile gives up Red Steel franchise
Story Created: Mar 11, 2014 at 8:35 PM ECT
Express

The Caribbean Premier League (CPL) and Lycamobile have reached a mutual agreement about the ownership of the Trinidad & Tobago Red Steel franchise, which will see Lycamobile relinquish ownership of the franchise with immediate effect.
The joint decision has been taken ahead of the next round of franchise sales, and CPL is in advanced discussions to identify and secure a new owner for The Red Steel, who have already attracted significant interest from a number of potential owners.

Damien O’Donohoe, CEO of Caribbean Premier League, said: “Our goal is to create long-term meaningful partnerships with franchise owners that benefit cricket in the region. We part on good terms and we are both keen to establish other ways in which we can work together in the future to help develop the CPL brand globally.”
A spokesperson from Lycamobile said: “Lycamobile has a long tradition of supporting cricket and cricketing communities and we look forward to aligning our cricketing interests to the continued expansion of the Lycamobile global footprint. We will continue to look at opportunities across the world and we wish the team the very best for the 2014 season.”

The franchise rights for the remaining teams—Antigua Hawksbills, Barbados Tridents, Jamaica Tallawahs and St Lucia Zouks—will go up for sale shortly, and are likely to be acquired in the coming months.

Honestly Weary CPL is the best thing to happen to cricket in the region. Regardless of what some Trini people think. No other tournament before pulls the kind of crowd and money that CPL did.

I think it is silly of the CPL organizers to use the names of the islands as part of the franchise name.  Using the names of capital cities would have been the more appropriate thing to do.  Many fans are still looking at the CPL as a competition of national teams, which it is not.  Which is why some people like Weary refuse to support it.

If fans realize that the CPL is now a franchise league like the BPL or La Liga and put nationalism aside they may be able to see the benefits of the new format.  By using the island names as part of the franchise name CPL organizers are making it more difficult for fans to put aside nationalism.

Many T&T fans are upset because over the last few years the T&T red force had enjoyed international success in T20 cricket and built a internationally recognized name brand.  So yes, in the short run T&T might have lost some potential international glory but I believe in the long run the CPL is better for the region as a whole including T&T.

Also, I would eventually like to see the CPL expand to 8 franchises with 2 franchises in North America.  Toronto would be my first choice followed by a franchise in either New York or Miami.  Two North American franchises have the potential to boost the league's revenue by increasing crowd support and generating TV revenue.

The original names were supposed to be capital cities. Not sure why they changed it. Maybe to get the country behind the team?

Looks really interesting, there are good arguments on both sides about hte names though - with a franchise system maybe it doesn't make sense, but I'm a fan of community-based sports organisations

Zouks draft Pietersen for CPL
By Roger Seepersad (Express).

England’s Kevin Pietersen was the first player to be selected in yesterday’s Caribbean Premier League (CPL) Twenty20 draft in Jamaica, being scooped up by the St Lucia Zouks team for US$80,000.

The Zouks were lucky enough to have the first selection in the draft while the Antigua Hawksbills had the second pick, taking Sheldon Cottrell for the same price.

The Trinidad and Tobago Red Steel retained Darren Bravo (US$80,000) with their first selection and Samuel Badree (US$70,000) with their second pick.

They also retained all-rounder Kevon Cooper for US$40,000 and Nicholas Pooran for US$10,000.

They strengthened their top order with the addition of aggressive left-hand opening batsman Evin Lewis, who was overlooked last year, for US$15,000.

Among the international players in the Red Steel team are Ireland’s Kevin O’Brien and Pakistan’s Nasir Jamshed. Other newcomers include pacer Shannon Gabriel and middle-order batsman Jason Mohammed.

The West Indies franchise player for the Red Steel is Dwayne Bravo.

T&T pacer Ravi Rampaul was selected by Kieron Pollard’s Barbados Tridents for US$50,000 while Rayad Emrit was retained by the Tridents for US$20,000.

Rampaul missed last year’s tournament due to injury.

The Tridents also kept Shakib Al Hasan with their second round draft pick for US$70,000.

The Guyana Amazon Warriors, with franchise player Sunil Narine in their ranks, held on to Lendl Simmons (US$70,000), Denesh Ramdin (US$50,000) and Navin Stewart (US$10,000).

Pakistan’s Mohammed Hafeez was also retained by the Amazon Warriors for US$80,000.

The international franchise players are Muttiah Muralitharan (Jamaica Tallawahs), Shoaib Malik (Barbados Tridents), Ross Taylor (T&T Red Steel), Saeed Ajmal (Antigua Hawksbills), Corey Anderson (Guyana Amazon Warriors) and Brad Hodge (St Lucia Zouks).

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.
