Borde excited about T&T Red Steel inclusions

The Caribbean Premier League (CPL) is less than three months away, and last year’s T&T Red Steel manager Colin Borde is happy with the new additions to the line-up and hopes the team can improve on last year’s performance.

In the 2013 inaugural tournament, the Red Steel were defeated by the Guyana Amazon Warriors in the semifinals at the Queen’s Park Oval, Port-of-Spain. The Jamaica Tallawahs, led by Chris Gayle, eventually won the tournament.

Five new players have joined the 15-man Red Steel squad, led by captain Dwayne Bravo. T&T’s Evin Lewis, Jason Mohammed and Shannon Gabriel (, and Nasir Jamshed (Pakistan) and Kenar Lewis (Jamaica) have been added to the line-up. Unfortunately, T&T’s Adrian Barath, Justin Guillen and Yannick Cariah, and Miguel Cummins (Barbados) and Davy Jacobs (South Africa) were omitted.

In a telephone interview with the T&T Guardian yesterday, Borde was satisfied with the team.

He said: “I think it’s good to have as many local players as possible because it is a T&T franchise, Lewis has proved himself at the Champions League, Gabriel has the experience and Mohammed has been around for some time.”

Borde said it is good to have international flavour at the tournament. Other than Jamshed, Ross Taylor of New Zealand and Kevin O’Brien of Ireland will also be in the Red Steel setup. Taylor and O’Brien were both part of the team last year.

Some of the notable names who will feature in this year’s tournament are Kevin Pietersen (England/St Lucia Zouks), Corey Anderson (New Zealand/Guyana Amazon Warriors), David Hussey (Australia/Antigua Hawksbills) and Thisara Perera (Sri Lanka/Antigua Hawksbills).

Borde believes all the teams have an equal chance to win the tournament.

“All the teams are evenly balanced, which would make it a better tournament.”

In an effort to broaden the game of cricket, the CPL plans to stage the first round of matches in Toronto, Canada, an idea supported by Borde.

“The CPL wants to spread the game and we want to get into the North American market.”

Borde also said it is an exciting time in world sport, as the World T20 cricket tournament (recently concluded), the Indian Premier League (April 16-June 1), the FIFA World Cup (June 12-July 13) and the CPL (July 5-August 10) will be played right after each other.

Meanwhile, the respective players have been retained by their franchises. Samuel Badree (T&T), Denesh Ramdin, Krishmar Santokie and Lendl Simmons (Guyana), Dwayne Smith (Barbados), Andre Russell.

Limacol to sponsor CPL for another season

New Guyana Pharmaceutical Company Incorporated (NEW GPC INC), under its popular Limacol brand, has renewed its sponsorship of the hugely successful Caribbean Premier League T20 tournament.
 Limacol was title sponsor as the CPL launched in 2013 to sell-out crowds, with over 250,000 spectators attending matches across Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago and St. Lucia.
 Commenting on the sponsorship, CEO of the CPL Damien O’Donohoe said, “it’s great to have Limacol on board again. It recognised the potential of the CPL in our early days, and after the success of our inaugural competition, we’re looking forward to working with Limacol again to further develop our brand.”

Canada out, Grenada in for CPL

The proposed opening of the 2014 Caribbean Premier League in Canada has been squashed and the opening will now take place in Grenada. The T&T Guardian was reliably informed that the organisers decided against the Canadian move for logistical reasons and then opened the offer to the Caribbean countries. Three countries stated an interest in hosting the opening ceremony and the first round of matches. The countries that indicated their willingness were Grenada, Barbados and Antigua but in the end the Spice Isle was chosen. It will mark the first occasion that CPL matches will be played in Grenada as none were played there in the inaugural season in 2013.
 
Looking at the proposed structure of the 2014 tournament, the opening ceremony is carded for July 11 and on the same day the Guyana Amazon Warriors will battle the Antigua Hawksbills.


The following day, also in Grenada, the T&T Red Steel will open their account when they come up against the Barbados Tridents. The second match on that day will see the defending champions Jamaica Tallawahs against the St Lucia Zouks. This would then mark the end of the Grenada leg of the series and the teams will then host matches in their respective countries as well as travelling to their opponents venues.
 
Red Steel will play their second match of the tournament on July 17 against the Guyana Amazon Warriors at the Providence Stadium in Guyana. They then hit the road three days later as they face off with the Antigua Hawksbills at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua. After this, the action switches to Trinidad where the Red Steel play their first home game against Amazon Warriors on July 24. Two days later Red Steel battles Jamaica Tallawahs, also at the Queen’s Park Oval. And the following day the St Lucia Zouks come calling at the Oval.
On August 2, the Red Steel hits the road again when they make the trip to St Lucia to battle the Zouks at Beausejour.

Five days later, Dwayne Bravo’s squad comes up against Tridents in St Kitts and conclude their preliminary round play against the Antigua Hawksbills on August 9 also in St Kitts. The first semifinal takes place on August 14, with the second on August 15 and the grand final on August 16, all in St Kitts.

T&T Red Steel gets local owners

Uncertainty surrounding T&T’s Red Steel’s future in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) appears to be over following news yesterday that the T&T-based team has been able to attract an owner.
 
With just over two months to go before the 2014 edition, players have been greeted with the news that the franchise has an owner, after last year’s mobile company Lycamobile, gave up its rights following the inaugural year of the tournament.
 
A number of local businesses have bought advertising spots on the team and all seems rosy with the second year approaching. Last year, the Red Steel lost at the semifinal stage of the tournament to the Guyana Amazon Warriors who went on to lose the finals to Jamaica Tallawahs.
 
In February, the Guardian reported that Lycamobile had given up ownership of the team and it was indicated that the owners of the St Lucia Zouks were also out.
 
That left only one of the six teams with an owner and that was the Guyana Amazon Warriors, who is owned by Dr Ramjisingh Ramroop.
 
Uncertainty surrounded the team despite the fact that it was involved in the draft for players earlier this month in Jamaica.
 
When T&T Guardian spoke to one of the advertisers recently they said that they had been approached by officials from CPL about coming on board and after showing an interest they were never contacted again.
 
Now all that will be put to rest as CPL is expected to make public the sale of the franchise next week and from that point there will be a flurry of activity surrounding the team.
 
The 2014 season has already seen some teams cutting back on their expenses and those that don’t have owners will not even have a manager. A travelling liaison officer will take care of the needs of the team for the tournament.
 
Four teams in this year’s tournament still remains without an owner. They are the Jamaica Tallawahs, Antigua Hawksbills, St Lucia Zouks and the Barbados Tridents. CPL has been having talks with interested parties but the new season is closing in and over the next few weeks, they are expected to aggressively market the franchises.
 
The tournament gets off on July 11 with the opening ceremonies in Grenada and will close off on August 16 with the finals in St Kitts.
 
As soon as the official announcement of the sale of the Red Steel is made, owners of the team will fill the management posts and a preparation plan for the team will be drawn up.
 
Red Steel skipper Dwayne Bravo who is currently missing the Indian Premier League (IPL) through injury is expected to be available to give his input on preparations leading up to the tournament.

Fans of the Trinidad and Tobago Red Steel will only see their team play three matches at their Queen’s Park Oval base when the second edition of the Limacol Caribbean Premier League gets going on July 11.
According to the fixtures released yesterday, the Red Steel, losing semi-finalists in the first season of the tournament in 2013, will only have home games against defending champions Jamaica Tallawahs, the St Lucia Zouks and the Barbados Tridents, but will be on the road for their remaining five games, including their opening fixture against the Tridents on July 12.
That match will be played at the National Cricket Stadium in Grenada which will be host to the opening weekend of the tournament. The series will be opened the day before the Red Steel v Tridents clash by Guyana Amazon Warriors and Antigua Hawksbills. The third match of the weekend will feature the Tallawahs against the Zouks on Sunday July 13. While no new teams have been added to the CPL for season two, two additional venues--the stadium in Grenada and Warner Park in St Kitts will host matches.

The Red Steel will play at both these venues, Dwayne Bravo’s side going to Warner Park towards the end of the tournament in August to play the Tridents a second time, meaning neither side will play each other at home. The Red Steel will also play the Antigua Hawksbills in St Kitts. In addition, the T&T franchise will also play the Hawksbills in Antigua and the Zouks in St Lucia.

As was the case last season, all CPL teams will not play each other twice. The Red Steel are only scheduled to play the Tallawahs once.
Warner Park will stage the semi-finals and final of the CPL from August 13-16. A reserve day for the final is scheduled if necessary for August 17.

Cost cutting to hit CPL

After a bumper first year, the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) is cutting back for the second edition and some teams may not even have a manager.
 
Mere weeks before the start of the tournament, cost cutting seems to be the order of the day, to make the league viable.
 
Players will be paid their salary as was determined during the draft but their per diem has been cut from US$70 per day to US$50 per day. Last year, all 15 members of each team were allowed a single room at hotels during game but now six players will have to share three rooms, with the others getting single rooms. It will be left up to the management of each team to decide who gets what type of accommodation.
 
With only one team having an owner and that being the Guyana Amazon Warriors, the others are expected to undergo some serious cost cutting, which may see no role for a manager or trainer. It is understood that the role of manager will be taken up by a travelling liaison officer.
 
Lycamobile, the owners of the T&T Red Steel, has ended their relationship with the team, so too the owners of the St Lucia Zouks. It is understood that there is an effort to have the Red Steel bought and information on this will be revealed soon.
 
The owners of the Red Steel lost a total of US$1.2M during the first year and this forced them to look elsewhere. They notified the organisers of the tournament, Verus International, that they will look at some other arrangement but it is yet to be revealed.
 
The asking price for the Red Steel for this year’s tournament is US$2M and the organisers will be hoping that someone comes forward with the cash.
 
What has been a stumbling block so far is the fact that the Red Steel has only three home games where potential owners can get a return on their investment. They would have hoped for more games in order to cash in.
 
Last year, the winners of the tournament, the Jamaica Tallulahs, got a first prize of US$250,000. The winner of each match during the tournament pocketed US$25,000.
 
There is no information to date as to what will be the bonus, if any, for winning a match and what will be the first prize.
 
This year the tournament will bowl off on July 11 in Grenada and the finals weekend will take place in St Kitts.
 
Last year’s runners-up, the Guyana Amazon Warriors, take on the Antigua Hawksbills, with two of the world’s finest spinners, Sunil Narine and Saeed Ajmal, going head-to-head.

St Kitts shells out millions to host CPL games

BASSETERRE, St Kitts -- US$5 million is the figure insiders are giving as the amount paid by St Kitts to host the semi-finals and finals of this year’s Caribbean Premier League (CPL) .

Caribupdate News and Times Caribbean had both reported that CPL organizers had been pressuring Caribbean governments to cough up huge sums of money to host the games.

Grenada reportedly shelled out US$500,000 to host the official opening and some first round match-ups. Initial reports suggested that St Kitts shelled out US$2.5 million to secure the semifinals and finals. However, insiders have revealed that the figure maybe closer to US$5 million or over EC$13 million. This is a massive amount by Caribbean standards, especially in the struggling economies of the region.

The announcement of St Kitts as hosts for the finals caught everyone by surprise, as its Warner Park Stadium is the smallest venue in the region, with an 8,000 seat capacity. The decision by CPL organizers to host the semi-finals and finals in St Kitts had many scratching their heads. However, with an alleged US$5 million bid to host semi-finals and finals by St Kitts, it was not as strange a decision as most would think.

In announcing St Kitts as host, Pete Russell, CPL chief operations officer, said, “We cannot wait to bring the big-hitting excitement of the CPL to Warner Park. By awarding these prestigious matches to St Kitts and Nevis we are demonstrating that the whole of the Caribbean can celebrate and enjoy the successes of this global tournament.”

But many are questioning the wisdom in spending such huge amounts to host CPL matches. The Grenada government has been heavily criticized for their half million US dollar investment. But observers in St Kitts have said that the issue has been very quiet as the government has been mum on the amounts spent in order to secure the bid to host the CPL matches.

Reports suggest that, while St Kitts coughed up millions to host matches, other countries like Antigua and Saint Lucia balked at the idea of spending large sums of money despite both having franchises. St Kitts does not have a franchise or even a player in the CPL.

The first semi-final of the 2014 Caribbean Premier League takes place on August 14, with the second on August 15 and the grand final on August 16, all at St Kitts’ Warner Park Cricket Stadium.

BT Sport lands Caribbean T20 rights: Graeme Swann signs up

BT Sport has made its first serious investment in cricket coverage, snagging the rights to the Caribbean Premier League T20.

The deal gives BT exclusive UK and Ireland rights to the tournament, which will feature former England star Kevin Pietersen, Pakistan's Shahid Afridi and Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralitharan playing alongside West Indian stars such as Chris Gayle, Kieron Pollard and Dwayne Bravo.

BT has also signed up ex-England spinner Graeme Swann as part of the commentary team.

The coverage will include 30 primetime T20 matches from July 11 to August 16.

Amazon Warriors and Hawksbills play the first match, which will air at 7pm on BT Sport 2 on July 11.

GML to broadcast all CPL matches

Caribbean Premier League Commercial Director Jamie Stewart at GML’s head office in Port-of-Spain, yesterday, after signing a broadcast agreement which will give GML exclusive rights to broadcast this year’s CPL matches on its television and radio platforms.

Abraham Diaz Limacol Caribbean Premier League (LCPL) and Guardian Media Ltd (GML) has joined hands to deliver free-to-air live broadcasts of all the action from the “Biggest Party” in Sport across the Caribbean. GML will distribute live telecast coverage of all 30 LCPL matches this year, enabling fans across the Caribbean to catch all the action from one of the world’s most exciting Twenty20 competitions, on television and radio platforms. The LCPL global telecast is being produced by IMG Media, one of the world’s leading sports production houses, who also produced the Indian Premier League (IPL).

GML’s radio broadcast team Grand Slam Sports will be producing the live radio commentary across the region utilising leading Caribbean broadcast talents. Vettori joins Jamaica Tallawahs

Daniel Vettori was yesterday confirmed as the Jamaica Tallawahs’ International Franchise Player, replacing Muttiah Muralitharan, who is now unavailable for the tournament. The Limacol Caribbean Premier League returns on July 11, as the Guyana Amazon Warriors take on the Antigua Hawksbills at the National Cricket Stadium, Grenada, in the opening game of the tournament.

The Tallawahs play their first match the following day, against St Lucia Zouks. Vettori, who was recently head coach for the Royal Challengers Bangalore, will once again team with Chris Gayle as he and the Tallawahs aim to retain their CPL trophy.

Vettori said: “It’s a privilege to be able to step in and help the Tallawahs defend their title. Having heard so many positive words about the CPL from my fellow cricketers, when the opportunity to come to the Caribbean and play in arguably one of the world’s most flamboyant and exciting T20 competitions came along, I couldn’t turn it down.”

Cricket: Neesham earns CPL deal

James Neesham's excellent form in the West Indies has been met with immediate reward.

The powerful allrounder has replaced Corey Anderson as the Guyana Amazon Warriors' star import in the Caribbean Premier League, which begins at the conclusion of the limited overs portion of the current West Indies tour.

Neesham played a starring role in New Zealand's 2-1 test series win over the West Indies, scoring 278 runs, including a century in the first test and two half-centuries in the third and final test. His medium-pace was not quite so effective, but he did pick up three wickets in the series from just 32 overs.

Neesham will join compatriots Daniel Vettori (Jamaica Tallahwas), who replaced Sri Lankan great Muttiah Muralitharan, and Ross Taylor (Trinidad & Tobago Red Steel) in the tournament, which begins on July 12 NZT.

It is understood that Anderson was refused clearance to play in the CPL by New Zealand Cricket, with potential concerns over how much cricket the injury prone allrounder's body can handle ahead of the World Cup. He is set to play the Champions League T20 in September for the Mumbai Indians.

Neesham's contract with Guyana is understood to be around US$100,000.

Limacol Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2014, which is just nine days away, will take place from July 11 to August 16 and online ticket sales for this year’s CPL go on sale at 08:00hrs today via CPLT20.com and Kyazoonga.com/CPLT20. Tickets will also be available at Stadium box offices and Courts and Digicel outlets in all eight host countries from 09:00hrs on Thursday.
Grenada will serve as the opening venue on July 11 when the Guyana Amazon Warriors take on the Antigua Hawksbills at the National Cricket Stadium in Grenada.
The ‘Warriors’ then face the Red Steel of Trinidad from 19:30hrs in their opening clash on home soil. The South American based team then face-off with the St Lucia Zouks on July 19 from 16:00hrs before playing their final match at Providence on July 20 when they oppose the Jamaica Tallawahs.
Guyanese can purchase tickets from the Guyana National Stadium at Providence and Digicel and Courts outlets in Guyana from Thursday morning. The Guyana Amazon Warriors play three games at Providence and tickets cost for $5,000 for the Party (Orange) stand, $4,000 for the Red & Green Stands and $2,000 for the grass mound.
The final game for the home team in Guyana should prove to be an epic battle since the Jamaicans cruised to a seven-wicket victory against the Amazon Warriors, in the inaugural final last year at the Queens Park Oval in Trinidad.
Matches this year will be played in Grenada, Antigua, Guyana, Barbados, Trinidad, Jamaica, St Lucia and St Kitts.
The tournament is set to be bigger than last year, featuring global cricketing superstars, Chris Gayle, Kevin Pietersen, Dwayne Bravo, Ross Taylor, Saeed Ajmal, Sunil Narine and Kieron Pollard.
Orin Bailey has been appointed Assistant Coach to Head Coach Roger Harper with former West Indies pacer Curtley Ambrose performing mentorship duties for the ‘Warriors’, who will have their first practice session today at Providence with the local players in the squad.
The ‘Warriors’ side will include International stars Cory Anderson, Mohamed Hafeez, Martin Guptil, Lendl Simmons, Sunil Narine and West Indies Test Captain Denish Ramdin.
Also in the line-up for last year’s runners-up are Chris Barnwell, Krishmar Santokie, Leon Johnson, Veerasammy Permaul, Navin Stewart, Steven Jacobs, Ronsford Beaton, Robin Bacchus and Trevon Griffith.
A concert from Hip Hop megastar Rick Ross will be held in St Kitts, while the Beefy’s Bash’ an all-star charity game for former England All-Rounder Sir Ian Botham will also take place during finals week in St. Kitts.

Bravo will be fit for CPL opener

Local cricket fans have been greeted with good news, as Red Steel captain Dwayne Bravo is fit and will take his place on the local franchise in the opening Caribbean Premier League (CPL) match for them against the Barbados Tridents in Grenada on Saturday. Bravo has been out of action since the start of the Indian Premier League (IPL) earlier this year when he injured his shoulder and could not play for the Chennai Super Kings. He returned home and was well on his way to resuming his Test career when he suffered a hamstring injury, which has had him sidelined since.
 
However, with great determination to lead his team in the 2014 CPL, the all-rounder has been working very hard on regaining his fitness and is now at a state where he can resume playing. Speaking to the T&T Guardian yesterday, Bravo said: “Earlier in the week when I played, I got a lot of pain the following day, however, when I played last night, I felt good and am now confident that I can take my place on the team for the opener. “It has been a work in progress in terms of getting myself fit in time for the matches and the more I play, the better I will get. I will just require to bowl four overs in each match so it would not be that strenuous. Last night I batted for about ten overs and I felt good with the bat in my hand.”
 
The Red Steel has their full team assembled in Trinidad at the moment and Bravo is very happy with the form of his foreign imports. “The foreign guys are going to be key for us in this tournament and in terms of preparations they are in good shape. Ross Taylor has been involved in the series against the West Indies, while Kevin O’Brien has been playing in England and showing good form. Nasir Jamshed has been knocking up in the nets and he is looking good.” The T&T Red Steel was knocked out at the semi-final stage of the inaugural tournament last year by the Guyana Amazon Warriors.

Virgin Atlantic Caribbean is sponsoring not one but two teams in this year’s Limacol Caribbean Premier League (CPL). The airline is sponsoring the Antigua Hawksbills and St Lucia Zouks. 

In making the announcement Andre Bello Sales Marketing and Corporate Communications Manager of Virgin Atlantic Caribbean explained: I think the 2013 series managed to capture the imagination of Caribbean fans, and introduced a broader audience to the game.  He added: We wanted to have an opportunity with even more cricket enthusiasts this year and so have sponsored the teams from two of our markets.

Zouks captain Darren Sammy said the team was assembled and practicing for the 2014 tournament: I am excited about playing in this year's CPL T20 and to having Virgin Atlantic as one of our sponsors - like Virgin the St. Lucia Zouks will be Flying In The Face Of Ordinary!    Marlon Samuels has been named captain of the Antigua Hawksbills while Sir Viv Richards will be the team’s Manager.

Kirk Edwards among four CPL changes

Four new players have been included on franchises preparing to battle each other in the high energy Caribbean Premier League (CPL) set to begin in Grenada tomorrow.

England international, Owais Shah, will link up with defending champions, Jamaica Tallawahs, while Ben Dunk, Player of the Tournament in this year’s Big Bash League, will bring his big hitting to the Antigua Hawksbills.
West Indies batsman, Kirk Edwards, who played in all three Tests in the recent series against New Zealand, will join the Barbados Tridents, while batsman, Shacaya Thomas, will join Dunk at the Hawksbills.

The four players are replacing newcomers Thisara Perera of the Antigua Hawksbills who has been selected for the Sri Lanka ‘A’ tour; Kieran Powell, also of Hawksbills who is unavailable for personal reasons; Ahmed Shehzad of Jamaica Tallawahs is unavailable due his commitment with the Pakistan training camp and Imran Nazir of the Barbados Tridents is injured.

St Lucia Zouks are also in the market for a replacement international player, after experienced Australian batsman, Brad Hodge, suffered a broken arm in a warm-up game.
