Shah joins CPL cast

The Limacol Caribbean Premier League (CPL) yesterday revealed four additional names who will be taking part in the high-octane T20 competition.

The quartet will be travelling this Friday to Grenada for the opening weekend of the tournament along with Jimmy Nesham and Daniel Vetorri.

England international, Owais Shah, will link up with defending champions, Jamaica Tallawahs, while Ben Dunk, player of the tournament in this year’s Big Bash League, will bring his big hitting to the Antigua Hawksbills. West Indies batsman, Kirk Edwards, who played in all three Tests in the recent series against New Zealand, will join the Barbados Tridents, while batsman, Shacaya Thomas, will join Dunk at the Hawksbills.

Those standing aside for the newcomers are Thisara Perea, Antigua Hawksbills; Kieran Powell, Antigua Hawksbills; Ahmed Shezad, Jamaica Talawahs and Imran Nazir, Barbados Tridents. St Lucia Zouks are also in the market for a replacement international player, after experienced Australian batsman, Brad Hodge, unfortunately suffered a broken arm in a warm-up game.

CPL Cricket Operations Director, Michael Hall remarked that, “It goes to show the strength of the Caribbean Premier League that we are able to draft in such talented and popular replacements for those who are now unavailable. It is a tournament that is on this lips of every cricketer in the world at the moment, and although international commitments and injuries have taken their toll, we are always confident of having plenty of talented cricketers ready and willing to step in.”

The Limacol Caribbean Premier League returns on July 11, as the Guyana Amazon Warriors take on the Antigua Hawksbills at the National Cricket Stadium, Grenada in the opening game of the tournament.

CPL II will take place from July 11 to August 16, 2014.

Player Changes -

Hawksbills - Thisara Perera (Sri Lanka) replaced by Ben Dunk (Australia) - Perera selected for Sri Lanka “A” tour of the United Kingdom.

- Kieran Powell (West Indies) replaced by Shacaya Thomas (West Indies) - Powell withdraws for personal reasons.

Tallawahs- Ahmed Shehzad (Pakistan) replaced by Owais Shah (England) - Shezad unavailable due to PCB camp.

- Muttiah Muralitharan (Sri Lanka) replaced by Daniel Vetorri (New Zealand) - Unavailable for the tournament.   

Tridents - Imran Nazir ( Pakistan) replaced by Kirk Edwards (West Indies) - Nazir withdraws due to injury.

According to CEO of the Limacol Caribbean Premier League Damien O’Donohoe, the 2014 edition will be beamed to “over 220 million homes”.
However, those millions and everyone at the National Cricket Stadium here in Grenada will also be looking anxiously at the skies today, eager that the sunshine returns to give the so-called “biggest party in sports” a bright start.

The sun hardly showed itself in St George’s yesterday And more rain his forecast for today.  The wet weather kept the six teams –defending champions Jamaica Tallawahs, Guyana Amazon Warriors, Barbados Tridents, St Lucia Zouks and the Trinidad and Tobago-based franchise now known simply as the Red Steel-- indoors.

However, the captains all anticipated a more competitive series than the acclaimed  first season in 2013. “There are no easy teams,” said Denesh Ramdin, captain of last year’s beaten finalists, the Amazon Warriors at the launch of the series at the Stadium yesterday. They will open the tournament today against Marlon Samuels and the Hawksbills from 2pm.
“I’m sure it will be a very interesting tournament,” he added. “I think it will be about who plays well on that particular day. You never know who can come out and play a magnificent innings and hopefully this year, you never know it might be Warriors.”

The Hawksbills,  like all of the others sides except the Amazon Warriors have changed coaches. And new man, former Australia coach Tim Nielsen is keen to get started. “Really looking forward to seeing the tournament kick off tomorrow,” he said. “Give the crowd something to cheer about; lot’s of sun, lot’s of real good cricket; make sure the television ratings are good and most important from our perspective, we get a win.”

The Zouks are also desperate to create a good first impression this weekend. “We never came up to the tournament last year, so we’ve got everything to look forward to,” Zouks skipper Darren Sammy.  “And as the previous captains have said, it’s an open tournament. This year the draft treated us a little better, we got the players we wanted.”

The Zouks, have acquired former England standout Kevin Pietersen this year. He is one of  five changes to the roster this season. They will open their campaign tomorrow against defending champions Jamaica Tallawahs in the second match of a double-header from 2.30pm.
Tallawahs skipper Chris Gayle, is conscious that repeating as champions is “never easy”.
He also noted that his side has some new faces also, “so you have to take that into consideration as well”.

But he said, “once we can get a start then you build momentum and try and get into the final four and then you can take things from there. We are going to take it slowly but at the same time the energy is gonna be high”.

High energy will also likely characterise the tournament’s opening ceremony, scheduled to begin at 12.45 pm. Once the rain does not come to the party.

Dwayne Bravo’s Red Steel made hay in the Grenada sunshine yesterday. Their disciplined bowlers took advantage of some indisciplined Barbados Tridents batting and Man-of-the-Match Ross Taylor and Darren Bravo then ensured that their side completed a seven-wicket win with little fuss.

The Red Steel completed victory at the National Cricket Stadium with 15 balls to spare, with Bravo’s 54th run completing proceedings. “It’s good to start with a win, I think that will ease some pressure on us and I am very glad the guys executed and delivered today,” skipper Dwayne Bravo said afterwards.
The Red Steel lost their first three games in the inaugural season of the LCPL last year, and Darren Bravo went through the series without a half century. But he put that right immediately this time, in partnership with Taylor (62, 51 balls, six fours, one six), who also had a lean 2013. The pair added a match-clinching 95 for the third wicket, chasing just 125 for victory, with Taylor fluent and composed right from the start and Bravo finding his rhythm as the innings progressed.

Earlier, the Tridents had briefly given themselves hope of pressing the Red Steel when Shoaib Malik removed Nasir Jamshed, first ball of the innings, caught at slip and Ravi Rampaul had Evin Lewis caught on the hook at deep backward square by Neil McKenzie.
But Kieron Pollard’s side, deprived of the all-round skills of banned Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, simply did not make enough runs after Bravo won the toss and inserted them. “We weren’t at our best today and I think Trinidad and Tobago, sorry, Red Steel deserved to win...We lost one of our biggest players in the last week or so; we had to struggle to get a replacement..We only played with two overseas players (Malik and McKenzie.)”

There was no sharp edge to the Tridents innings. They were blunted by a solid collective bowling effort by the Red Steel. The Tridents never gathered momentum after the first six powerplay overs which ended with them on 40 for one. It would have been a perfect start had Dwayne Smith not given Darren Bravo on the long-on boundary catching practice off Samuel Badree.

Shane Dowrich who shared in that opening stand with Smith, could not supply the same explosiveness as his departed partner, but his was an attractive 37 off 38 balls before he was fourth out at the start of the 16th over, bowled by Kevon Cooper, trying to get on with it.
But it was Kevin O’Brien who set the Tridents back on their heels after Dowrich and Shoaib Malik put on 34 for the second wicket.

The Irishman removed Malik and South Africa veteran McKenzie in each of his first two overs, while skipper Bravo snuffed out any late innings momentum the Tridents might have gathered by removing Pollard who gave a skier of a return catch following a top-edged pull, and Jonathan Carter, caught in the midwicket region off another skier. Jason Holder with 17 off nine balls boosted the total somewhat at the end. But 124 for six was hardly going to be enough. Taylor and Bravo made sure the Red Steel cut to the chase.

West Indies cricketing knights, Sir Garfield Sobers and Sir Viv Richards, yesterday confirmed their long-term support for the Limacol Caribbean Premier League, after being appointed to the senior management team. Sir Viv has been appointed as performance director, and Sir Garfield assumes the role of CPL brand ambassador.
 
Sir Garfield and Sir Viv are widely regarded as two of the greatest cricketers of all time, and their support speaks volumes for the success of the CPL, which began its second season with a thrilling opening weekend in Grenada, which saw wins for Guyana Amazon Warriors, the Red Steel, and the Jamaica Tallawahs, for whom, Chris Gayle scored the first ever CPL century.
 
Dubbed ‘The Biggest Party in Sport’, CPL thrilled sell-out crowds across the Caribbean in 2013. The tournament is set to be even bigger and better this year, with global stars including Gayle, Ross Taylor, Kevin Pietersen, Sunil Narine, Shoaib Malik and Marlon Samuels among the world class cricketers on show.

The League bowled off on Friday and will end on August 16, with 30 matches taking place over 37 days.
 
In addition, the final week of the tournament, in St. Kitts and Nevis, will host Beefy’s Bash, an all-star charity match featuring Sir Ian Botham, Brian Lara and Piers Morgan, as well as a concert by hip-hop megastar, Rick Ross.
 
The Limacol Caribbean Premier League is a franchise-based T20 format cricket tournament that combines two of the most compelling aspects of Caribbean life – dramatic cricket and a vibrant Carnival atmosphere. The inaugural CPL, billed as “the Biggest Party in Sport” featured six teams competing throughout the region in August 2013 – Jamaica Tallawahs, The Red Steel, Barbados Tridents, Guyana Amazon Warriors, St Lucia Zouks, Antigua Hawksbills. Gold and a Trini tiff in Grenada

 The opening weekend of the Limacol Caribbean Premier League (LCPL) found me on the road, in Grenada. It was World Cup Final weekend as well, so those two things combined, it was an eventful time. Here is how it went.

Thursday, National Cricket Stadium, 11.45 a.m.
The official launch of the 2014 season of the LCPL is over. The teams captains, coaches and mentors are all present, and speaking optimistically about the month-long series and their team’s chances. The coming weeks will tell whether such optimism is justified. But this morning the new coaches on the scene are making the right noises. The new men, with the exception of South African Mickey Arthur with the Jamaica Tallawahs, have replaced West Indies cricket legends who were appointed as team coaches in the first season. Those gentlemen-Sir Viv Richards, Gordon Greenidge, Desmond Haynes and Sir Andy Roberts are now mentors, along with Sir Curtly Ambrose and Courtney Walsh.
Got a chance to chat with Sir Andy after the formalities. Says he has “no problem” with the shift to the mentor role and was looking forward to working with the younger players. There is so much that a Tonito Willett or a Sunil Ambris can learn from picking the brain of a man who himself was a student of the fast bowling art, and who was second to none with identifying the weaknesses of batsmen.

Administrators in the Caribbean have struggled to figure out how best to use the region’s outstanding former players. But I could see Sir Viv being much more at home getting Shacaya Thomas or Danza Hyatt psyched up for an innings for the Antigua Hawksbills than being burdened with the day-to-day affairs of the team.
Looking around at some of cricket’s all-time greats milling around in almost every corner of the room, I’m struck by the priceless opportunities these current players have to learn from the best without much effort. Why don’t more of them take advantage?

Time to go and sort out some problems with my recording of the launch. At least the rain has stopped now. But it’s a bleak day with more rain on the way. Hope this not a sign of things to come tomorrow.

Friday 11, 1.40 p.m.

Game time is coming up in 20 minutes. Remarkably, it looks as though we will start on time. Rare to see a day like this, so cloudy but not a drop so far. Media colleague from Grenada tells me he was praying for no rain last night. Guess his faith in prayer has been renewed as Ben Dunk lays into the Amazon Warriors bowling.
Dunk, the top player in Australia’s Big Bash this year, was a late addition to the LCPL but didn’t seem to need acclimatisation the way he hit the ball so fluently. Would not have minded seeing him get more than 38. His teammates could not follow his lead though, and in the end, the Hawksbills’ 136 didn’t seem a winning score. Wonder what the crowd is thinking.
The CPL is taking a chance this year. It was the success it was in 2013 because it turned into a people’s festival. But the tournament was run at a loss. The night time matches allowed for big crowds to turn out. But prime time in the Caribbean is hardly that in the bigger television markets outside the region. So, in an attempt to address revenue this season, the majority of games will be day-time affairs to cater for the overseas audience.
Don’t think rows of empty seats looked too great on TV though. But the stadium is one of the bigger ones in the Caribbean, so even a decent crowd like Friday could look inadequate. Will see what happens tomorrow.

Saturday 12, 1.30 p.m.

The first match is over and the Red Steel have won, but captain Dwayne Bravo is still on the attack. He makes a point during the post-match presser to say how “disappointed” he was with the decision to drop the Trinidad and Tobago label from the Red Steel. He goes on for minutes. It is an emotional response, an angry one. A defiant one.
“Maybe I might get in trouble for it, but so be it. I believe it’s the right way,” he says.
Not sure Minister of Sports Anil Roberts, who approached the CPL about removing the T&T name, would be too pleased.

Call the Minister for a response. He says the T&T brand is not for sale and that there had been many talks with the CPL and CEO Damien O’Donohue who “clearly understood” the position. None of the other governments in the region have sought to disassociate themselves from the franchises in their territories however.
Seems a case of the letter of the law being enforced rather than the spirit of cricket prevailing.
This is a story that will run for a while. Not the kind of copy the organisers were hoping for.
One gets the sense season two in the CPL is not going to be the honeymoon of season one.

Sunday, 5.45 p.m.

Chris Gayle, having blazed away for 111 not out in the last game of the weekend, is taking a jump now with the fans in the party stand. Ipad and tablet cameras are clicking away, capturing the scene. This is gold for the marketing people. They will hope dearly by tournament’s end it’s not fool’s gold.

CPL confirms name change

The Caribbean Premier League (CPL) has confirmed that it has agreed to omit the words “Trinidad and Tobago” from the Red Steel team name based on a request from the Minister of Sport Anil Roberts, who expressed the view that the use of the country name “infringes on the protocols surrounding the use of the name and the sovereignty of the nation”.

“The CPL would like to take this opportunity to reiterate that the Red Steel team is not a franchise that is based in Trinidad and Tobago. It is a team selected from the fantastic talent pool across the country,’’ CPL CEO, Damien O’Donohoe, said in a statement. ‘The team is not restricted to play its home games in Trinidad and Tobago, and ultimately, any decision on where the team is based is dependent on the commitment and support that CPL has already enjoyed with other Governments and owners,” the release added

The change of name has brought about mixed reaction in Trinidad and Tobago, with Red Steel captain Dwayne Brave questioning Roberts’ intervention, while some members of the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board (TTCB) agreed with the decision to remove the Trinidad and
Tobago title from the franchise. The change leaves the Red Steel as the only CPL franchise without a country name attached to it. Last year’s first season of the competition saw the Jamaica Tallawahs winning the competition.

O’Donohoe’s response hinted that the possibility exist that the Red Steel one day could leave Trinidad and Tobago. “The fans in Trinidad and Tobago are second to none. They were fantastic supporters of CPL during its first year, and we look forward to bringing more games to Trinidad and Tobago, no matter where the franchise is based,” the CPL statement ended.

Guyanese fans crazy over CPL

Cricket starved fans in Guyana are going crazy now that the Limacol Caribbean Premier League (CPL)T20 tournament has reached their land. With the Amazon Warriors due to play the Red Steel last night at the Providence Stadium, the atmosphere outside the ground was electric.
 
Fans started arriving at the ground from as early as 4 pm and some were making the long trek from remote parts of Guyana. Ticket sales for the match was robust and a full house was expected. With the Amazon Warriors based in Guyana the interest amongst the fans is tremendous. The scenes were unlike what transpired in Grenada for the opening round last weekend. No franchise is attached to Grenada and this would have resulted in small crowds there.
 
Since arriving in Guyana on Sunday, the Amazon Warriors players, led by T&T’s Denesh Ramdin, have been aggressively marketing the tournament. The players made several appearances at sponsors outlets and this helped to create the hype.
 
The cricket vibes here were similar to the World Cup football that just ended. Even the radio talk show hosts were going at it, with one remarking that the Guyana Amazon Warriors would: “Teach those Trinis a lesson in cricket.”
 
He probably did not know that four men on the Amazon Warriors team are from T&T, including the captain. However it was just all part of the fun and interest shown in the tournament.
 
A fan from Charity in Essequibo, reached the ground at 1pm and was not allowed in until 4pm. He and his wife were however still upbeat as they entered. He told the T&T Guardian: “This is the best thing right now for cricket here. With all the problems we have in cricket administration in Guyana, we needed to see cricket and I am glad that the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) is not interfering with this cricket. We are going to see a great game, we love cricket here in Guyana and we will spend our money to come and see the matches. Imagine I have to rent a room in Georgetown to stay the night, as I cannot get home until tomorrow after this match is done.” (VM)

Skipper Bravo backing Pooran to bounce back

Red Steel skipper Dwayne Bravo is standing by his decision to allow Nicholas Pooran to take on Sunil Narine in the Super Over against the Guyana Amazon Warriors which resulted in their first and only loss so far in the second edition of the Limacol Caribbean Premier League Twenty20.
Bravo, speaking to the media yesterday also noted that 18-year-old Pooran wanted to bat in the Super Over.
“I would not do anything different,” said Bravo.

“Obviously the result did not work out in our favour so you will hear the negative side in terms of why we chose young (Nicholas) Pooran. Obviously he was a bit low in confidence (after the final over) but the type of player Pooran is, he is very confident. He is the one who walked up and said ‘skip I want to do it’ so we gave him the opportunity,” the Red Steel captain added.
Pooran had dropped a catch in the final over of the Guyana chase and while Bravo admitted that the player might have been a bit low in confidence, he and the rest of the team backed the youngest player in the side to deliver.

“He will only learn from it. Obviously it was only one over and anything could have happened and he was facing the best bowler in the world in Sunil Narine so there was not much he could do, even myself might not have been able to get the 12 runs in six balls,” Bravo explained.
And despite not scoring any runs in the Super Over, the Red Steel skipper was still very happy with Pooran.

“It is a learning process and I am happy with him and I like his attitude and his belief in his ability and the team believes in him as well.
“We did very well to defend 118 so that in itself sends a message and if you look at the other two games, we won by big margins, so it shows we are on the right track and that the players are clicking at the right,” he added.
The Red Steel are now in Trinidad and Tobago for three home games at Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain and Bravo is excited ahead of those encounters.

He said the players are more relaxed this time around having been successful on the road.
“Last year we played our first three games on the road and we lost all three and coming home to play was a bit of pressure, so to win two on the road now, we obviously feel more comfortable coming home to our fans and based on reports, tickets are selling out so the fans are happy with the way the Red Steel team is playing so far and I am just looking forward to playing here and putting on a great performance for our fans home in Trinidad,” said Bravo.
Looking ahead at the matches, Bravo said:
 “We have two very tough games in Guyana and Jamaica up front on Thursday and Saturday followed by the Zouks on Sunday. The Barbados Tridents now have the official support of the ‘Beer of Barbados’.
Banks (Barbados) Breweries Limited has signed a deal with the local franchise that will see the Tridents prominently sporting the iconic Banks Beer logo on their match caps for the remainder of the 2014 Limacol Caribbean Premier League (CPL).

“We are pleased to partner with the Tridents as they seek to bring cricketing glory to the people of Barbados,” said Bernard Frost, Group Marketing Manager of Banks Holdings Limited (BHL). “We have enjoyed a longstanding relationship with both the West Indies Cricket Board and the Barbados Cricket Association, and we see our new partnership with the Barbados Tridents as an evolution of BHL’s continuing support for local culture and sport, especially our beloved cricket.”

In January this year, the ‘Beer of Barbados’ became the ‘Official Beer Partner of West Indies vs England 2014’.
“The CPL has been billed as the ‘Biggest Party In Sport’ and Banks Beer fully intends to keep the party going whenever the Tridents play,” added Frost.
The Tridents, captained by Kieron Pollard, tried to defend home turf at Kensington Oval against the St Lucia Zouks yesterday afternoon, the Antigua Hawksbills tomorrow and the Guyana Amazon Warriors on Saturday.

The Barbados Tridents squad includes West Indies stars Pollard, Dwayne Smith, Jason Holder, Kirk Edwards, and Ravi Rampaul, while international players include Shoaib Malik of Pakistan, Jeevan Mendis of Sri Lanka, and Neil McKenzie of South Africa.
The team is under the guidance of head coach Rabindra ‘Robin’ Singh, assistant coach, Henderson Springer, and is mentored by West Indies batting legend, Desmond Haynes.  The final of the 2014 Limacol CPL is scheduled for August 16 at Warner Park in St Kitts.

Local CPL games sold out

Tickets for the Limacol Caribbean Premier League (CPL) matches in Trinidad and Guyana have been sold out with CPL management boasting yesterday that the League has hit its stride.

Pete Russell, Chief Operating Officer of the CPL, said, “Guyana last week was just rocking and we would like to thank the fans for coming out in full force. I’m delighted to say that Trinidad is set to be the same with all matches taking place this week already sold out which is a fantastic achievement.”

Next week, the CPL matches will be on at Sabina Park, Jamaica where reigning tournament champions, the Jamaica Tallawahs, will play the Antigua Hawksbills, the Guyana Amazon Warriors and the Barbados Tridents on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday respectively.

Also happening next week, at the Beausejour Stadium, the St Lucia Zouks will be at home to face the Barbados Tridents, the Trinidad and Tobago Red Steel and the Antigua Hawksbills.

CPL advised cricket fans and people interested in attending matches in Barbados and in St Lucia and Jamaica to buy their tickets soon as these were also selling rapidly.

Seeing all the support from people from all over Trinidad and Tobago at the Oval today against the Tallahawks I am glad they have this team named T&T instead of POS Red Steel. By naming it T&T Red Steel fans from everywhere in T&T have an emotional obligational to the team when they battle the teams from other countries. Naming it Port Of Spain Red Steel is not a good idea in this type of regional competition because fans from South, Central and East Trinidad may not have the same sentimental attachment to the the team. Plus its good for business because it encourages national support for the team in terms of buying tickets to see them play.

The Jamaica Tallawahs were just slightly off their game and the Trinidad and Tobago Red Steel took full advantage, thanks to some good strategic moves in their Limacol Caribbean Premier League Twenty20 match at the Queen’s Park Oval yesterday.
Red Steel skipper Dwayne Bravo lobbied for Javon Searles to play his first match of the tournament yesterday and he rewarded the faith placed in him by smashing two sixes in the last over to ensure his team got to 183 for five.

Evin Lewis was another who came back into the squad yesterday and lashed 72 off 43 balls at the top of the innings.
Then Kevin O’Brien took four wickets to restrict the Tallawahs to 170 for six.
Speaking after the 13-run win, Bravo explained that it was all about strategy.
“After we lost to Guyana, the coach and I decided that we are going to pick teams based on conditions and the opposition. We are not necessarily going to keep a winning team,” said Bravo.
“It was a good choice (to bring in Searles),” he added.
“No matter how good you are, it is very difficult to chase down a total going at 12 runs an over for an entire innings. Something had to give at some point in time, and I knew Chris would have probably been waiting on the spinners—Samuel Badree and Sulieman Benn.
“They only got three overs with the spin and it is good we had options like Kevin O’Brien, and it shows that we have depth in our team,” the Red Steel skipper explained.
“He came on and did a fantastic job, getting the wicket of Gayle and from there I knew the game changed,” Bravo added.

The Tallawahs coach Mickey Arthur and skipper Gayle both noted that their side was not at its best and got a lesson, having won its first three matches in the tournament,
“We have played very well through this tournament and today (yesterday) we were just slightly off in all three departments and when you are not on your game in all three departments, you get punished and we were punished,” said the Tallawahs coach.
He added: “I think it is probably a good wakeup call for the side and we will come back strong in Jamaica without a doubt.”

Gayle said they “played good cricket in patches” but it was not enough to complete the win.
“They got on top of us with the ball. In the bowling department we had our chances earlier but we didn’t make the best use of it and a few hiccups in the field kind of cost us a bit as well,” the Tallawahs skipper added.

The win was the Red Steel’s third in a row and they will be going for another  when they tackle the last-placed St Lucia Zouks in the only match today at the Oval from 4 p.m.

Three arrested for suspicious CPL behaviour, including from Guyana

Three individuals have been arrested for suspicious behaviour at Limacol Caribbean Premier League games over the course of the tournament so far.
This was announced by the CPL in a media statement Friday which said the arrests came as a result of ongoing monitoring by representatives of the CPL and the Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU) of the International Cricket Council (ICC).

The CPL also confirmed to the Express that the arrests were not related to match-fixing and that no CPL representatives or any players were involved.
The arrests were made in Barbados, Guyana and Trinidad. However the persons arrested were not from Caribbean territories.
In its release, the CPL also stated its “commitment to running a clean tournament and operating within the set ICC rules and regulations.”

“In line with this commitment, CPL has ensured that its staff are well able to identify any instance of corrupt or illegal behaviour by providing extensive training to them on what to be aware of,” the release added.
CPL CEO Damien O’Donohoe said the CPL will not tolerate any illegal activities.
He said: “We take our responsibility to ensuring that we protect and promote the integrity of the tournament and the game itself very seriously.”

”Put simply, we have a zero tolerance policy towards any forms of corruption or illegal activity and will deal with it quickly and effectively through the appropriate channels.
“We are working closely with all our partners —the ICC, the police and ground security in each of the Limacol Caribbean Premier League venues —and would like to thank them for their efforts on our behalf,” O’Donohoe added.

Bravo impressed by Red Steel run

DWAYNE BRAVO, captain of the Trinidad and Tobago Red Steel, is impressed by the four-game winning streak of the franchise team at the 2014 Limacol-sponsored Caribbean Premier League (CPL).

The Red Steel spanked the St Lucia Zouks by nine wickets at the Queen’s Park Oval on Sunday, on the heels of their four-wicket win over the Guyana Amazon Warriors (July 24) and 13-run triumph over the Jamaica Tallawahs (July 26). The Red Steel’s winning run began on July 20 with a nine-wicket spanking of the Antigua Hawksbills.

“I said to the guys “winning is a habit”, said Bravo, during the post-match media conference. “We remembered how disappointed we were this time last year and how hard we had to work to win games.

“We’re playing good cricket at the moment, we started well in the tournament. We want to be number one so we can go straight into the final (in St Kitts on August 16).

“That’s our purpose at the moment,” continued Bravo. “There are still three games left (against the Zouks on Saturday, the Barbados Tridents on August 7 and the Hawksbills on August 9). It’s going to be a different ball-game.” Asked about the change of fortunes from last year’s poor start to this year’s consistent start, Bravo responded, “the head coach (Simon Hemlot). That’s the big difference. “The level of professionalism he brings within our group is second-to- none. The relationship we have also, I think that’s more important. We understand the game a lot and we respect each other a lot.”

At times, Bravo has used a fielder behind the standing umpire. About the move, he commented, “it’s more knowing the opposition. Some of the players are very strong straight down the ground so, to try to slow them down, or move them again from their game plan, I just try to be unpredictable and try to set unbalanced fields.

“Sometimes it works, sometimes it don’t work but it’s just to play in the back of their minds and block off their strength.”

Evin Lewis led the scoring for the Red Steel, with 77, his second straight half-century.

“I thought (it) was his best innings, his most organised innings, the way he manipulated the strike,” said Hemlot. “He got his opening partner in the game as well, and then his boundary-hitting and his positivity, I felt this was his best innings in the tournament.”

CPL organisers happy despite changes

Organisers of the Limacol Caribbean Premier League say they are pleased with the second edition of the regional Twenty20 tournament, despite a lukewarm start two weeks ago.
The showpiece got off to a slow start, with noticeably empty stands at the first match in Grenada earlier this month and moderate attendances in Antigua but CPL CEO Damien O'Donohoe said it was encouraging to see increased numbers of spectators attending the matches around the region since.

“We’re really delighted, it’s hard to believe we’re only three weeks in, and I think everyone will agree that the cricket’s been absolutely first class and the crowds that have come out, it’s very exciting,” O’Donohoe told CMC Sports. And we’re rolling into two big weeks next week with Jamaica and St Lucia, before we go to the finals in St Kitts.”
For the first time, Grenada’s National Stadium hosted the opening ceremony and the first three games before action moved on to Antigua and Guyana, the latter of which featured full houses for each match.

The Barbados leg, which bowled off last Wednesday, saw a capacity crowd for Saturday’s final game while matches in Trinidad and Tobago were played before a packed Queen’s Park Oval.
O’Donohoe said the sparse crowds for the opening matches had not impacted the tournament negatively.
“You see here in Barbados this week a sold-out stadium, three sold-out games in Trinidad this week, ticket sales are flying for both Jamaica and St Lucia so I really don’t see that being an issue,” he said.

“Grenada to start was disappointing and I will say Antigua was slightly disappointing but on a whole the ticket sales have been really good and the crowds have flocked in their thousands again.”
One of the major changes to this year’s tournament has been the start time for games. Last year, virtually all games were played at 7 pm, but the current campaign has seen some games bowl off as early as 10 am and midday, with the bulk scheduled for 4 pm.
Only a handful of night fixtures have been carded.

O’Donohoe told CMC Sports some adjustments were necessary to this year’s schedule because of the growing popularity of the tournament.
“Well obviously last year all the games were at 7 pm and this year it’s been a challenge because of the worldwide international TV audience,” he pointed out.
“We’ve had to schedule some games during the day and that has been a challenge from a crowd perspective but overall we sold over 75 per cent of the tickets so it’s been a great success.”

The CPL, which was inaugurated in 2013, replaced the West Indies Cricket Board-run Caribbean T20 which followed on from the Stanford Twenty20, created by now disgraced Antigua-based Texan investor Allen Stanford. He is serving a 104-year jail sentence in the US for fraud.

Six franchises—Antigua Hawksbills, Barbados Tridents, Guyana Amazon Warriors, Jamaica Tallawahs, T&T Red Steel and St Lucia Zouks – are participating in the CPL. The final is scheduled for August 17 at Warner Park in St Kitts.

Red Steel hopes for good weather

With the T&T Red Steel looking to push for top spot at the end of the preliminary round of the 2014 Limacol Caribbean Premier League T20 tournament, rain may be a concern as a weather system is approaching St Lucia, where they are carded to play at 4 pm tomorrow.

The T&T Red Steel currently leads the standings with ten points from six matches and if they win their final three preliminary round matches, they will end as league leaders, which will put them directly into the finals.

Tomorrow they battle the St Lucia Zouks at the Beausejour Stadium in Gros Islet and finish off their matches against the Antigua Hawksbills and Barbados Tridents in St Kitts.

Yesterday, the St Lucia government urged citizens to remain vigilant as the island prepared for a low pressure system that weather officials predict could become the region’s first major cyclone for the 2014 hurricane season.

“I urge St Lucians to monitor closely the approaching weather system. We can’t afford to be caught off guard.

“Let us remain alert at this time and throughout the hurricane season,” Prime Minister Dr Kenny Anthony said in a statement.

The Miami-based National Hurricane Centrer (NHC) said that showers and thunderstorms associated with an area of low pressure located about 1000 miles east of the southern Windward Islands have been gradually decreasing since yesterday.

“However, environmental conditions are marginally conducive for the development of this system into a tropical depression during the next couple of days. while it moves generally west-northwestward near 15 mph,” the NHC said, urging residents in the Lesser Antilles to monitor the progress of this system.

Last December, at least five people were killed and St Lucia suffered millions of dollars in losses after a low level trough system caused widespread damage also in neighbouring islands of St Vincent and the Grenadines and Dominica.

Meanwhile, the T&T Red Steel continued their preparations in good conditions yesterday, training at the match facility.

Manager Colin Borde told the T&T Guardian: “We have been having great conditions here since our arrival. We have had a little rain in the night but apart from that, we have had no rain to hamper us.”

“We are hoping that the predicted bad weather blows away before our game because the guys have a goal in mind and that is winning the remaining three matches.

“We have great momentum with us at the moment and after the excellent performances last weekend at the Queen’s Park Oval, the players are eager to get out on the pitch and do their thing.

“The rest we have had since the weekend, has given the management time to work with the players in terms of some niggling injuries and at this time all the guys are fit and ready for action.

“The coaches have been doing a fantastic job and they will have been working very hard in keeping the players focused on the task at hand as we approach the final stage of the tournament away from home.”

With Tropical Storm Bertha heading towards St Lucia, today’s Limacol Caribbean Premier League clash between T&T Red Steel and St Lucia Zouks at Beausejour Cricket Stadium seems under serious threat.

The match is scheduled to get off at 4 pm and while the cricket was supposed to capture the attention of everyone here, it’s not the case, as they are busy preparing in case Bertha smashes into the Island.

Information coming to hand is that Tropical Storm Bertha formed late Thursday night, about 275 miles east-southeast of Barbados and is now tracking quickly toward the Windward Islands.
A tropical storm watch was issued yesterday as the conditions were possible within the area.

Tropical storm-force winds (sustained wind speeds of 39 mph or greater) was expected to spread into the warned areas of the Windward Islands from last night and sweep through today and unto Puerto Rico by tonight.

An area of low pressure aloft (called a tropical upper tropospheric trough or TUTT) is interacting with the tropical storm, producing wind shear (change in wind direction and/or speed with height) that is hostile for tropical cyclone intensification.

Yesterday the T&T Red Steel had their morning training session called off as the rain, which started falling here from Thursday night continued way into the day.

In the afternoon, there was a slight break in the rain and the players rushed off to the Beausejour for a hastily arranged training session.

Manager Colin Borde said: “The situation here does not look good in terms of the weather. The management of the team is aware of the weather pattern developing and we are hoping that somehow we can get in some cricket tomorrow.

“We have had to play cat and mouse with the rain because there are still some areas that we would like to pay particular attention to, leading into the match and we need some time in the nets. We are going down to the ground with the hope that the rain stays away long enough, so that we can get in some meaningful work out there.”

T&T Red Steel is currently at the top of the standings, having won five of their six matches to date.

The Zouks have lost all five matches and hence the Red Steel will start as favourites to win this match. If rain intervenes and the match is called off, it could hurt the Red Steel chances of finishing in the top sport.

Jamaica is right on their heels and has lost just one match as well.
