UKHOV OUT TO HIT THE HEIGHTS AGAIN IN BEIJING – IAAF WORLD CHALLENGE
« Reply #8 on: May 20, 2014, 11:45:01 PM »
19 MAY 2014 PREVIEW BEIJING, CHINA
UKHOV OUT TO HIT THE HEIGHTS AGAIN IN BEIJING – IAAF WORLD CHALLENGE

Ivan Ukhov, perhaps the hottest man in the hottest event in the world right now, returns to the high jump apron at the IAAF World Challenge meeting in Beijing on Wednesday (21).

With four men over 2.40m this year, and a fifth hovering near it, there has been plenty of talk that Javier Sotomayor’s world record of 2.45m, set in 1993, could finally fall this summer.

At the opening leg of the IAAF Diamond League in Doha almost two weeks ago, four men cleared 2.37m or better, the first time that had ever been achieved in a competition. One of them, Olympic champion Ukhov, topped them all when he cleared 2.41m.

This leap gave Ukhov the outdoor world lead for the year, just a centimetre clear of Canada’s Derek Drouin and Ukraine’s world champion Bohdan Bondarenko. Qatar’s Mutaz Essa Barshim, who won at the 2014 World Indoor Championships, cleared 2.40m last year.

Ukhov, though, has been the most prolific of the contenders.

The Russian had a stellar indoor season, clearing 2.40m, 2.41m and a national record of 2.42m under a roof. Now, he is already at 2.41m in outdoor competition.

All eyes will be on him here, that’s for sure, where his listed opposition includes the USA’s 2011 world champion Jesse Williams and The Bahamas’ Trevor Barry.

El Sayed back after his 89.21m

Ihab Abdelrahman El Sayed was the sensation of the evening in Shanghai, the Egyptian hurling the javelin a massive 89.21m with his first throw to effectively end the competition.

No one else was able to cope with that throw on Sunday night. Now, it will be interesting to observe how El Sayed copes with the pressure and rivals here.

His toughest opposition is likely to come from Kenya’s Julius Yego, El Sayed’s occasional training partner and fourth at last year’s IAAF World Championships, and the surprise Olympic champion Keshorn Walcott from Trinidad and Tobago.

The women’s hammer, part of the 2014 IAAF Hammer Throw Challenge, projects a clash between world champion Tatyana Lysenko and this year’s world leader, 2013 Asian champion and local star Zheng Wang.

Lysenko threw 78.80m to win in Moscow last August but was well below-par, not even reaching 70 metres, in Tokyo on 11 May.

By contrast, Wang threw an Asian record of 77.68m at the end of March this year. On paper, Wang wins.

Ana Simic was another of the surprises of the IAAF Diamond League meeting in Shanghai, taking the high jump with a personal best of 1.97m after clearing every height successfully with a first-time jump.

A repeat of that performance could see Simic win again here, with not many women in top form this early in the season.

It is six years since 2004 Olympic champion Yelena Slesarenko last cleared 2.00m or better (her best is the former Russian record of 2.06m), but she competes here, along with another two-metre performer in Spain’s European champion Ruth Beitia and St Lucia’s Levern Spencer.

Schwanitz to shine in the shot?

Germany’s world silver medallist Christina Schwanitz will start favourite in the women’s shot put, but Chinese fans will be looking for a strong performance from Gong Lijiao, while USA’s Michelle Carter will be a strong contender too.

Justin Gatlin and Veronica Campbell-Brown will, for different reasons, both be keen to compete in the Birds Nest Stadium, the athletics arena for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and next year’s IAAF World Championships.

Gatlin had hardly regained his breath after winning in Shanghai on Sunday before he was positively bubbling over about the chance to assess the World Championships stadium.

“I’ve got a lot more in the tank,” said Gatlin, adding that he was looking to run fast in 2014 and that a lot of athletes took the ‘off’ (non-championship) year for granted, but not him.

“Beijing next, a rehearsal for next year. Can’t wait,” he added.

Given the expected warm conditions, Gatlin could easily improve on the 9.92 world lead he ran in Shanghai. Michael Rodgers, Kim Collins, Dwain Chambers and China’s Su Bingtian are also in the 100m filed in the Chinese capital.

Campbell-Brown returns to the stadium in which she won the Olympic 200m title six years ago. On reputation, the Jamaican looks the best of the women’s 100m field, but a 23.08 200m in  Shanghai suggests that she is some way short her top shape.

Rollins looking for good run

Both the men’s and women’s sprint hurdles are also on the programme.

The women’s 100m hurdles is highlighted by world champion Brianna Rollins, whose 12.26 last year took her to equal-third on the all-time list.

Rollins, after going unbeaten in 2013, lost narrowly to fellow US sprinter Kristi Castlin at the Drake Relays in Des Moines last month with both clocking the same time of 12.58, but bounced back with a win in Tokyo just over a week ago. Another US athlete, Kellie Wells, looks to be Rollins’ toughest opposition here.

China’s Xie Wenjun, the surprise winner in Shanghai, will face 2008 Olympic champion Dayron Robles and world silver medallist Ryan Wilson in the men's sprint hurdles.

The Beijing program also includes both the men’s and women’s 3000m steeplechase, the men’s pole vault and long jump, and a women’s 1500m.

Walcott lands Beijing javelin gold
Published: Thursday, May 22, 2014 (T&T Guardian)

T&T Olympic champion Keshorn Walcott turned the tables on his rivals when he topped an 11-man field to win gold in the men’s javelin at the IAAF World Challenge held at the 2008 Olympic Bird Nest, Beijing, China, yesterday.

In a relatively subdued final, Walcott, the 2012 IAAF World Junior champion, took the event with a distance of 83.94 metres—the third-best mark of his life behind his 2012 London Olympic Games winning effort of 84.58 and an 84.39 effort on home soil last year.

Second was Russian Valeriy Lordan with a distance of 82.05 while third placed Czech Republic, Petr Frydrych had a distance of 80.30, the only other distance beyond 80 metres.

Egypt’s Ihab Abdelrahman El Sayed, days after his 89.21m stunner in the men’s javelin in Shanghai, limped off the runway this time with a knee injury and a best of 74.03m in four injury-hampered attempts.

On Friday last, at the Shanhgai Golen Grand Prix, El Sayed finished ahead of Sweden’s Kim Amb (84.14) and Czech Republic’s Vitezslav Vesely (83.80) followed by Kenyan Julius Yego (83.00), Russia’s Dmitri Tarabin (82.66), Finnish athlete Tero Pitkamaki (81.38) and Walcott, who was the seventh athlete over the 80 metres mark, with 81.09 from a field of 12.

The 21-year-old Walcott’s effort of 83.94 now ranks as the fifth best of 2014 behind El Sayed; Japan’s Ryohei Arai’s 85.48l Amb (84.14) and American Tim Glover’s 84.01 metres.

The other T&T athlete to compete in China, Mikel Thomas failed to get among the medals after he placed seventh in the men’s 110m hurdles in 15.19 seconds.

The winner of the event was China’s Wenjun Xie who made it a Shanghai-Beijing double in 13.31 followed by American duo, Ryan Wilson (13.37) and Kevin Craddock (13.56).

Overall, the one-day event produced three world leads, but just as importantly, a big night for China and Beijing, showing that it retains the ability to stage a major championships and its athletes have the talent to compete well at global level.

After his 9.92 in Shanghai, USA’s Justin Gatlin made it two wins, two world leads from two starts in China with a 9.87 in the Birds Nest.

Again he gave fast starters Michael Rodgers and Kim Collins no chance, blunting their biggest weapon with a fast getaway of his own. In front at the half-way point, Gatlin exploded away impressively in the second half to beat Rodgers (10.03) by a metre and a half with Collins almost another metre back in 10.11.

Impressively, Chinese record-holder Zheng Peimeng (10.18) and Su Bingtian (10.19) were the next two across the line, showing they can mix it in this company.

Gatlin had one win over Usain Bolt last year, at the Rome IAAF Diamond League meeting, and was asked whether he was sending a message with his impressive early-season form.

Not particularly, said Gatlin, but he added: “I think he knows I’m one of his toughest rivals in terms of being mentally strong. But I’m trying to focus on my own running. My aim is to be a better athlete each year.”

Jamaican Veronica Campbell-Brown may be working hard on her technique, but that trademark scuttling style is still unmistakable. She was in control of the women’s 100m from early in the race and then defied the efforts of 200m winner Simone Facey to run her down over the final metres.

Campbell-Brown won in a season’s best 11.14 from Facey’s 11.19 and another Jamaican, Trisha-Ann Hawthorne (11.23).

This after Facey had earlier won the 200m in 22.67, followed by 100m fourth placed finisher Aleen Bailey (23.11) and China’s Yongli Wei (23.25) in a race in which Tiffany Townsend broke down with a leg injury half-way along the straight.

Walcott wins in Beijing

Olympic champion Keshorn Walcott produced the third best throw of his career to strike gold in the men’s javelin at the IAAF World Challenge meet, in Beijing, China, yesterday.

The Trinidad and Tobago field athlete hurled the spear 83.94 metres--his best effort since throwing 84.39m to win at the Twilight Games, here in Trinidad, on May 3, last year. Walcott’s personal best, 84.58m, earned him gold at the Olympic Games in London, England, on August 11, 2012.

An ankle injury put a damper on Walcott’s 2013 campaign, and he finished 18th at the World Championships in Moscow, Russia, with a 78.78m throw. But with the injury behind him, the 2012 world junior champion is approaching his best form again, and will be among the favourites for gold at the July 23-August 3 Commonwealth Games, in Glasgow, Scotland.

Walcott opened his 2014 campaign with International Twilight .Games victory at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, landing the spear 79.33m. He was back in action on Sunday, throwing 81.09m to finish seventh at the Shanghai Diamond League meeting, in China.

Walcott followed up with yesterday’s triumph in Beijing, his big 83.94m effort earning the 21-year-old thrower sixth spot on the 2014 world performance list.

Ihab Abdelrahman is the world leader with a huge 89.21m effort. The Egyptian, however, was disappointing in Beijing, throwing 74.03m to finish 10th.

Russian Valeriy Iordan (82.05m), Czech Republic’s Petr Frydrych (80.30m) and Kenyan Julius Yego (78.78m) were second, third and fourth, respectively, in yesterday’s IAAF World Challenge meet.

T&T’s Mikel Thomas, meanwhile, clocked 15.19 seconds to finish seventh in the men’s 110m hurdles. China’s Wenjun Xie topped the field in 13.31.

And at the Loughborough International meet, in England, on Sunday, 19-year-old T&T runner Nicholas Landeau returned a time of one minute, 50.38 seconds – a new personal best – to bag bronze in a men’s 800m event.

Anil salutes Keshorn
Published: Friday, May 23, 2014 (T&T Guardian)

Sports minister Anil Roberts has congratulated Keshorn Walcott on his victory at the IAAF World Challenge in Beijing, China, on Wednesday.

Walcott produced the third best throw of his career with a hurl of 83.94 metres to strike gold. “Indeed, it is great to see our Olympic gold medallist once again mount the podium in the gold position after throwing what was his best in competion throw since the London 2012. This is evidence of the young man’s consistent dedication and focus. I also extend congratulations to his coach Ismael Mastrapa who has created a program that saw Keshorn fully recover from his injury last year and deliver an amazing performance in China.”

Roberts said Walcott’s performance was very encouraging in the lead up to the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Scotland. “Like the rest of the population, I will continue to monitor his progress and will ensure that the Ministry of Sport and the Sports Company stand ready to provide the necessary support for Keshorn and all our national athletes to shine and succeed on the international stage.”
