Sports Ministry to help Wilkes’ family

THE FAMILY of late national weightlifting great Rodney Wilkes is expected to receive assistance from the Ministry of Sport, with regards to his funeral expenses.
So said Ashwin Creed, the permanent secretary in the Ministry of Sport, in a brief telephone interview yesterday. “The Minister (Anil Roberts) instructed that we assist the family,” said Creed, “we’re talking with the family to ascertain what they want exactly.”
Creed added, “we’re hoping by (today) to get full details.” Wilkes, Trinidad and Tobago’s first Olympic medallist (silver in the featherweight class in the 1948 Games in London, England) died at the San Fernando General Hospital on Monday, at the age of 89.
