Posted this in another thread but since it was slightly off the topic, I did not want folks here to miss it.

Most Black people don't really understand the meaning of the term Uncle Tom and so use it out of context.

Based on the character in Harriet Beecher Stowe's book, "Uncle Tom's Cabin", being called an uncle tom is a compliment. It's amazing how this kind, honest, honorable Christian character has been turned into something derogatory.

The book "Uncle Tom's Cabin" shaped the opinions of many people before the Civil War. This book told of the cruelty and evil of slavery. It no doubt had an influence on people worldwide.
