Plans ongoing for Pro League, Super League merger.
By Joel Bailey (Newsday).

PLANS ARE still ongoing towards a proposed merger between the Pro League and TT Super League.

Both parties met yesterday at the TT Football Association (TTFA) office, located at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva.

“We had a meeting, a very successful one I might add,” said TT Super League president Keith Look Loy. “We’re trying to put infrastructure in place to (ensure) that we will have the finances that has been promised to us from the Sports Company and FIFA. But, until then, it’s just numbers on a paper.”

He continued, “We’re doing our best to ensure that we get this money before the season begins as planned. In the meantime, we’re trying to ensure that the league has a proper structure, a proper legal framework etcetera. It is all very urgent because the League is due to kick off in June.”

Among those involved in yesterday’s meeting were Jamaal Shabazz and Brent Sancho (Pro League), Look Loy and George Joseph (Super League), Anthony Moore (TTFA) and Lindsay Gillette (independent member).

Look Loy mentioned three things which the commission (comprising those in attendance yesterday) plans to do.

“The money that has been promised will, in fact be delivered,” Look Loy said. “Secondly we can set up the legal framework, constitutions, regulations and thirdly to put things in place, to hire staff to run the league, that we can begin on time.”

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Sancho: Talks ongoing into Pro League/ Super League merger.
By Joel Bailey (Newsday).

BRENT SANCHO, owner of local football club Central FC, says talks are still ongoing over a proposed merger of the Pro League and Super League.

But the former TT football team defender said the proposed merger must be planned correctly, to ensure growth in the sport locally.

Businessman and president of the Amateur Swimming Association of TT (ASATT) Lindsay Gillette is the chairman of a commission entrusted with the task of formalising the merged league.

Other members of the commission are Sancho, Jamaal Shabazz (both Pro League), Keith Look Loy, George Joseph (both Super League), Anthony Moore (TT Football Association) and Anthony Harford.

“The conversations have been very positive,” said Sancho, in an interview on Monday. “The clubs are very receptive to the idea and it must be noted that the reason why it’s taking such a while is we’re being cautious in making sure that we get this right.

“We sympathise with the players that we’re not having any football, but we have one chance to get this right. If we can get this right we’ll have, at least, a lot of longevity in it.

“For the players and for football, we’re actually putting things in place to make sure (TT) would be a major contender for qualifications for World Cups 2026 (etcetera).”

The unified league will have two tiers – first (with ten teams) and second (with 12 teams).

Asked if any date has been set for the start of the league, Sancho replied, “We have one or two dates.

“The challenge we have is we’re still putting together the framework,” he added. “We should have some sort of assistance from the TTFA (regarding) putting things in place. Other than that, we’re looking at a possible pre-season tournament. We’re working on things.”

Sancho said the TTFA is assisting with the venture, even though they are battling financial difficulties.

“Everything seems to be on board,” he said. “They’re confident we can get things going.”

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Actually that is a good idea seeing that some of the ttfa transactions take longer than ever.
