Craig to Benn, OUT, that's Craig's fourth wicket. It's tossed up on off stump and Benn slogs wildly across the line and misses. Crashes into off stump.

81.2
Southee to Shillingford, OUT, that cut away again, and he pokes at it and gets a thin edge through to the keeper. It went off the inside edge, in fact. Are they enforcing the follow-on? Let's wait and watch...
S Shillingford c †Watling b Southee 14 (21b 2x4 1x6) SR: 66.66

New Zealand 508/7d
West Indies 262 (81.2 ov)
West Indies trail by 246 runs with 0 wickets remaining in the 1st innings

New Zealand to bat again ...will not send West Indies back in an enforce the follow on...

No follow-on. Southee has bowled superbly all day. He's finished with figures of 4 for 19 in 16.2 overs. Simply outstanding. Craig got four wickets on debut too, and he was always at the batsman and got it to spin and bounce consistently. There will always be debate about Chanderpaul's methods while batting with the tail but you can't argue about how well he batted, and how untroubled he looked, to make that unbeaten 84.

New Zealand will have a minimum of 15 overs to bat out today. Fulton and Latham have come out again, and it will be Jerome Taylor with the new ball.

New Zealand took big strides towards a winning position, with Southee and Craig taking four wickets apiece to bowl West Indies out for 262 and secure a 246-run lead. They chose not to enforce the follow-on and then failed to extend their advantage to any real extent, ending the day 14 for 2 in their second innings.

Cricket: Black Caps in control

9:32 AM Wednesday Jun 11, 2014
nz herald

New Zealand will be able to sense a drought-breaking test victory after dismissing the West Indies for 262 this morning.

Paceman Tim Southee and debutant Mark Craig combined for eight wickets on the third day of the opening test in Kingston, leaving the tourists in complete control and holding a lead of 246 runs

Brendon McCullum opted against enforcing the follow-on as his side chase their first test victory overseas since 2012, instead giving New Zealand a chance to rack up an unassailable advantage.

That chance was aided chiefly today by the work of Southee and Craig. Having begun the day on 19-0 after New Zealand declared on 508-7, Craig ended the West Indies' opening partnership by trapping Kieran Powell in front for 28.

The Otago off-spinner struck again just two balls later to remove Kirk Edwards for a duck and, the following over, things got worse for the hosts when Darren Bravo was also dismissed without scoring, the victim of a caught-and-bowled by Ish Sodhi.

The Kiwi spin duo left the Windies teetering at 97-3 at the lunch break, although dangerman Chris Gale was still at the crease, unbeaten on 59. The opener's stint didn't last much longer, however, denied a century in his 100th test when Southee had him caught behind for 64.

Southee followed up that key wicket by trapping Marlon Samuels for a duck, leaving the Windies trailing by more than 400 runs with only five first-innings wickets in hand.

And, after a brief period on consolidation between Shivnarine Chanderpaul (43no) and Denesh Ramdin (39), Southee struck again to remove the Windies' captain and reduce the home side to 176-6 at tea.

Craig made early inroads in the final session of the day, claiming the scalps of Kemar Roach and Sulieman Benn to finish with figures of 4-91 in his first run in the black cap, while Southee took the final wicket to fall to record 4-19.

Taylor honoured to return
Story Created: Jun 10, 2014 at 10:19 PM ECT
Express

Jamaican fast bowler Jerome Taylor says he feels honoured to have been recalled to the West Indies squad after an absence of nearly five years. Taylor’s return to the regional setup has been plagued by a series of back-related injuries over the years.

“It’s a prestigious feeling, a feeling I’ve always wanted,” he told the Jamaica Observer. “I’ve been looking forward to this for some time”.
Taylor was the pick of the West Indies bowling attack with one wicket on Sunday’s opening day of the current test against New Zealand. He has returned to the ground where his sensational second- innings spell of 5-11 and match haul of 8-85 helped to wreck England in February 2009.

“I’ve had very good performances here so it’s just to try and get as close as possible to the one I had against England,” said who turns 30 later this month. “It’s going to be difficult, but it’s a target and if I can get that it would be good for me and for the West Indies.”
The Jamaican has 29 Test matches between 2003 and 2009 and took 82 wickets at 35.64. He also has a Test century to his credit. “I’m here again and I’m trying my best to stay on the park. It’s about continuing to improve and see how best we can take it from here,” said Taylor, who was Jamaica’s top pace bowler in this season’s Regional Super50 and Four-day tournaments.

“It’s a lot of work that has been put in over the last couple of months. In the [training] camp the other day I did a lot, physically and mentally. Everything is okay with the back, so if selected, I’m just looking to go out there and exploit (the opposition)”.
West Indies and New Zealand are due to play the second Test match at the Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad & Tobago from next Monday to Friday, while the third is scheduled for the Kensington Oval in Barbados from June 26-30.

Shillingford: NZ’s watchful approach worked
Story Created: Jun 10, 2014 at 10:18 PM ECT
Express

West Indies spinner Shane Shillingford said New Zealand’s watchful batting set up their huge total and put them in a strong in the first Test at Sabina Park in Jamaica. It was hard work for the West Indies bowlers on the first two days of the Test on Sunday and Monday with Shillingford bowling 46.3 overs and picking up three wickets for 145 runs.

West Indies left-arm spinner Sulieman Benn bowled 52 overs and took three for 142 runs. The home team bowled 174.3 overs before New Zealand declared their innings at 508 for seven. “Looking back at when we started on the first day, we all thought we would get more from the pitch but unfortunately that did not happen,” said Shillingford at the end of day two.

“Even though the pitch was a flat one, the (New Zealand) guys really played the pitch really good. They batted well and did not take too much risk. This is what you expect in Test cricket and I thought they handled it well and they played well” the West Indies off-spinner added.
Speaking about his return to international cricket Shillingford said: “I am just enjoying every moment. I know once you are coming back into international cricket it is going to be hard work but I am just enjoying it and it is nice to be back with the guys. There are challenges in life in everything so you just got to stick with it and work hard,” he added.

The 31-year-old was reported for a suspected bowling action for the second time in his career during the Test series against India last November. A report from all four match officials highlighted specific concern with Shillingford’s doosra. However, the off-spinner was cleared to return to international cricket after agreeing not to bowl his doosra delivery.

Eden: "What a way to throw the game back to the West Indies. McCullum should really look at his tactic of never enforcing the follow-on. He should treat each scenario separately and not just do the same everytime. Remember the England test in Auckland? And with that, they've declared. The batsmen run quickly off the ground, and New Zealand have set West Indies a target of 403.

New Zealand 508/7d & 156/8 (60.5 ov)d
West Indies 262

New Zealand lead by 402 runs with 2 wickets remaining

Taylor ran through New Zealand's top-order, but Tom Latham held their innings together and brought it slowly back on track with a very assured 73. New Zealand's second-innings score of 156 for 8 is a reflection of how well West Indies bowled in the early part of the innings, and also of how the pitch is behaving at the moment. This will be anything but easy for the batsmen as they look to bat out 130 overs (by my potentially dodgy calculations) to save this Test.

And here they come now, Gayle and Powell. Can the big man play a superlative innings in his 100th Test, on his home ground, with a dodgy back? First up is Boult, who troubled him with his away swing in the first innings.

New Zealand 508/7d & 156/8d
West Indies 262 & 15/2 (7.0 ov)

West Indies require another 388 runs with 8 wickets remaining

New Zealand, to state the obvious, are right on top here. West Indies have lost both their openers, and Edwards and Bravo haven't looked anywhere near comfortable against the swing of Southee and Boult. New Zealand's bowlers are fresh, have their tails up, and all that debate about the follow-on now seems entirely irrelevant.

Gayle can smack a ball and get to his average of 42, but send in a pace bowler who can produce a full swinging delivery and he's toast. Thats always been his weakness cuz he doesn't move his legs. But Gayle is far from the problem. Our other batsmen look like scared little boys out there."

Craig to Edwards, OUT, was that bat-pad? Yup! Edwards walked, after he prodded forward and inside-edged this onto his front pad. Looped up to leg gully. Craig has got him twice in this match

DM Bravo c †Watling b Craig 12 (42b 1x4 0x6) SR: 28.57

When Chanders was young he would walk 45 mins to play cricket for 15 mins and walk back home. This man absolutely loves to bat and I think if a youngster could develop some level of commitment from that type of mental application then he can play for as long as he is capable!"

Along with a strong batting lineup, it would be nice to finally have a spinner that can bowl us to victory at the end of a test match." Sodhi to Ramdin, OUT, bowled him! that was the leg break on the stumps, and just turned enough to straighten. Ramdin slogged across the line and missed. Crashed into middle stump, and they may not need that extra half-hour

That's New Zealand's second win in the West Indies, and their first on this ground. They've been the far superior side throughout, and this last 82-run partnership between numbers ten and eleven should't distract the West Indies team management from taking a long hard look at their performance.

Surrender at Sabina
Windies go down on fourth day of 1st Test

Off-spinner Mark Craig captured the best figures by a New Zealand bowler on debut as the visitors beat West Indies by 186 runs late on the fourth day of the first Test at Sabina Park yesterday.
The hosts were dismissed for 216 after New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum had asked for an additional 30 minutes of play when they reduced West Indies to 115 for seven with four overs remaining in the regulation day’s play.
Craig finished with four for 97 and match figures of eight for 188, the best from a New Zealand bowler on debut, as the hosts were dismissed in the final over of the day, chasing an improbable 403 runs for victory in Kingston.

Tim Southee had torn the top off the hosts’ second innings with two wickets while Craig and legspinner Ish Sodhi shared the wickets in the final session with Sodhi taking three for 42 as New Zealand won just their second Test in the Caribbean.
Tailenders Shane Shillingford and Suleiman Benn had provided a cameo 10th-wicket partnership for the crowd, belting 82 runs from 56 balls before Benn was caught by wicketkeeper BJ Watling from part-time spinner Kane Williamson for 25 with two balls remaining in the day’s play.

Shillingford was left 53 not out, having scored the second-fastest test half century from 25 balls. He hit five sixes and three fours in his innings.
McCullum had earlier declared New Zealand’s second innings on 156 for eight, pushing the tourists to a lead of over 400 runs. Craig ended up scoring the final runs after having belted a six on the first ball he faced in test cricket.
Southee had earlier reduced the hosts to 15-2 at tea when he captured Kieran Powell for a duck and the dangerous Chris Gayle for 10 before Craig took over in the elongated final session.

The off-spinner captured two wickets in an over when he had Darren Bravo caught behind for 12 and then Marlon Samuels caught at forward short leg for a two-ball duck, the batsman making his first pair in Test cricket.
Sodhi had the obstinate Shivnarine Chanderpaul trapped lbw for 24 with about an hour’s play remaining before Craig had Kemar Roach (19) caught behind.
Sodhi then bowled West Indies captain Denesh Ramdin for 34 and had Jerome Taylor caught by wicketkeeper BJ Watling for 19 before Shane Shillingford and Benn produced their cameo.

New Zealand, resuming on 14 for two, began the day poorly with Taylor taking two wickets in two balls before the tourists could add to their overnight score.
Opener Tom Latham, however, followed up his 83 in the first innings with 73 to anchor the second innings.
Taylor finished with three for 28 from 12 overs.

West Indies Thrashed By 186 Runs

Jermaine Lannaman, Gleaner Writer

Another inefficient batting display, coupled with incisive bowling on New Zealand's part, condemned West Indies to a 186-run defeat in the first Test of their three-match series at Sabina Park yesterday.

Set a victory target of 403 runs - after New Zealand posted 156-8 in their second innings - 45 minutes before tea on the fourth day - West Indies capsized before being dismissed for 216, three minutes before the close of play.

The New Zealanders, who were recording their second win in the Caribbean and first at Sabina Park in four attempts, were led to victory by another fine bowling spell from the duo of debutante off-spinner Mark Craig and fast bowler Tim Southee.

Craig, who earned the Man-of-the-Match award, claimed four for 97 for a match haul of eight for 188, while Southee, who took four for 19 in the first innings, followed up with two for 32.

Gayle, competing in his 100th Test, scored 10. The 34-year-old, who during his innings passed the 7,000-runs landmark - a feat achieved by only eight other West Indians - hit two fours off 13 balls during his stay.

Sulieman Benn and Shane Shillingford, while hitting some big sixes, added 82 for the final wicket.

Benn was last man out for 25, while Shillingford, who went on to record Test cricket's second fastest 50 - off only 25 balls - slammed five sixes and three fours in an unbeaten 53.

Shillingford's feat took one ball more than the record held by South Africa's Jacques Kallis.

West Indies coach Ottis Gibson has blamed the side’s batsmen for their 186-run defeat

KINGSTON, Jamaica (CMC) --

West Indies coach Ottis Gibson has blamed the side’s batsmen for their 186-run defeat to New Zealand in the first test match which ended in Kingston on Wednesday.

Gibson has blasted the regional side’s batting in the two innings as “bitterly disappointing” after they scored 262 and 216 with only two top-order batsmen making fifties.

"Obviously, [I'm] very disappointed with the way we batted especially," Gibson said.

"By all accounts, after the first day's play, we agreed in the dressing room afterwards that it was a flat pitch, so to have a batting performance like that over two innings is bitterly disappointing and something that we need to put right as quickly as possible.

New Zealand crushed West Indies inside four days at Sabina Park to claim only their second ever win in the Caribbean.

The tourists have now taken a one-nil lead in the three-test series.

"They have just got to occupy the crease and look at New Zealand, the way they went about it - making runs, starts, getting yourself in first, assessing the conditions, assessing the bowlers, scoring areas,” said Gibson.

“We had five batsmen over two innings in our top six who made ducks and that puts your batting under pressure”.

The Caribbean side collapsed in less than a session and a half attempting to chase 403 victory target.

"First-innings runs have always been important. Any team that's going to win Test matches needs big first-innings runs. New Zealand showed that in the first innings, getting 500, and we didn't really respond,” he said.

“We needed to respond with a 450 or 500 score and take some more time and overs out of the game. We didn't do that. To get bowled out on that pitch in the second innings in 48 overs is very, very disappointing."

However Gibson said he was pleased with the efforts of his front-line bowlers, who had all come into the match after significant time away from international cricket.

Jerome Taylor and Kemar Roach were battling injuries, while Shane Shillingford played his first Test since his suspension due to an illegal bowling action.

Taylor was the best bowler on Wednesday with three for 28 while fellow new ball partner Roach finished with two for 12 and Shillingford 2 for 39.

"I thought the bowlers worked really hard. When you look at workloads, I thought Jerome Taylor playing in his first Test after such a long time, stood up to that task very well and got better as the Test match went on. Kemar Roach, also, after a long layoff from injury and his shoulder surgery, got better as the Test match went on and bowled really well in the second innings as well, “ said Gibson.

"Taylor swung the new ball nicely and when he came back with the old ball, he was skillful and picked up wickets. Hopefully, he'll be fit and get through this Test series and, going forward, make us a stronger unit by being in the bowling attack."

The second test between West Indies and New zealand starts next Monday in Port-of-Spain.
