The workshop catered to coaches in six disciplines—football, cricket, netball, volleyball, basketball and track and field—as well as community coordinators and monitoring and evaluation officers from the rural areas of south west Trinidad, Mayaro, Toco, Tabaquite and the north coast.
Head coordinator of "Taking Sport to Rural Areas", Paul Voisin explained the rationale behind the workshop.
"The aim was to have Ministry coaches aid in the development of the community coaches' skills, techniques and knowledge in their relevant sporting disciplines," he said.
Physical Education & Sports Officer II Gabre-Jesu McTair and Physical Education & Sports Officer I Darren Charles were in Cocoyea, and assisted with the presentation of certificates to the 48 participating coaches.
Persons living in rural communities are sometimes at a disadvantage in terms of sporting opportunities available to them. Therefore,
"Taking Sport to Rural Areas" was born out of the need to level the playing field, the ultimate goal being to provide similar opportunities to those in the rural and urban areas of Trinidad and Tobago.
