Herculis 2014 – The Caribbean athletes come to Monaco for an unforgettable Meeting!

The Caribbean is known for having outstanding athletes and we have the privilege to greet a few of them!

Two Jamaicans Nickel ASHMEADE and Warren WEIR will be running the 200m. Warren is placed in first place in the World Ranking and arrived in third place at the Olympic Games. Moreover he is the current World Record holder with Nickel and their team for the 4x200m. On the other hand, Nickel became 4x100m World Champion last year, and one of the Diamond Leagues he won was in Monaco. Both of them have won several times the Diamond League; which one of them will beat the other?

On the 400m for the Dominican Republic will be running Luguelin SANTOS. He was silver medalist at the Olympic Games and bronze medalist and the World Championships. Currently ranked 5th in the World Ranking, we can in for a treat to watch him perform.

Olympic bronze medalist and double Diamond League winner Hansle PARCHMENT will be hurdling at our meeting. His seasonal best was currently set in Paris at 12.94, we hope he will do even better at our meeting!

Jamaican’s sprinter Shelly-Ann FRASER PRYCE will be competing in Monaco and we couldn't be happier! Her outstanding times led her to becoming not only silver medalist at the Olympic Games and gold Medalist at the Olympic Games twice for each, but also five times gold medalist at the World Championships. She has won five times the Diamond League; will she win another one at our meeting? Joining Shelly-Ann will be the world leader Michelle Lee AHYE from Trinidad and Tobago in the starters for the 100m. She set her personal best this season, the time being 10.85, is that not incredible? Which one between the two will win?

The fastest 400m hurdler will be present in Monaco, the one and only Kaliese SPENCER! Her seasonal best in an astonishing 53.41 and has had two silver medals at the World Indoor Championship, as well as one silver medal at the World Athletics Championships. The public will have the chance to see such a great athlete run for them at the Meeting and will not be able to believe their eyes when they will see at what speed she will be racing!

Triple jumper Kimberly WILLIAMS will be jumping too! The athlete has won the World Indoor Champion and the Diamond League, her seasonal best is currently 14.56m.

Such an amazing crew with light up the stadium with their incredible results and will leave the crowd gob smacked!

09 JUL 2014 GENERAL NEWS MONACO
LOADED SPRINT FIELDS AMONG THE LATEST ADDITIONS TO MONACO LINE-UP – IAAF DIAMOND LEAGUE

The women’s 100m and men’s 400m at the Herculis meeting will feature a host of talented sprinters when the IAAF Diamond League descends upon Monaco on 18 July.

There may not be a senior global championship this summer, but if there were, the start-list for women’s short sprint final would read something like the 100m line-up in Monaco.

World and Olympic champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce will be up against Olympic 200m champion Allyson Felix, double world silver medallist Murielle Ahoure, world 200m bronze medallist Blessing Okagbare, world leader Michelle-Lee Ahye, double Olympic 200m champion Veronica Campbell-Brown, Diamond Race leader Tori Bowie and former European 200m champion Myriam Soumare.

Meanwhile, the men’s one-lap sprint will be a battle of the ‘Ms’ as world champion LaShawn Merritt takes on African record-holder Isaac Makwala, world indoor champion Pavel Maslak and Asian record-holder Yousef Masrahi.

Hejnova returns

World 400m hurdles champion Zuzana Hejnova has been out of action so far in 2014, having undergone surgery in the winter, but the defending Diamond Race champion will make her return in Monaco, where she’ll face current world leader Kaliese Spencer and US champion Kori Carter.

In the long jump, US champion Jeff Henderson will look to extend his unbeaten run in 2014 when he takes on world champion Aleksandr Menkov and world indoor silver medallist Li Jinzhe.

Elsewhere in the field events, world champion Caterine Ibarguen will be up against world indoor champion Ekaterina Koneva in the triple jump, Olympic pole vault champion Jenn Suhr faces world indoor champion Yarisley Silva, while shot putter Valerie Adams, javelin thrower Barbora Spotakova and discus thrower Piotr Malachowski will be the favourites in their respective events.

Last-minute additions strengthen over fields

With the likes of world champion Bogdan Bondarenko, Olympic champion Ivan Ukhov, world indoor champion Mutaz Essa Barshim, Commonwealth record-holder Derek Drouin and 2011 world silver medallist Aleksey Dmitrik already announced in the high jump, it seemed as though the field couldn’t get any stronger.

But it just has. And the addition of world indoor bronze medallist Andrey Protsenko means that for just the second time in history, six men with PBs higher than 2.40m will all be on the same high jump start list.

Half of the field for the men’s 110m hurdles had already been announced, and now world leader Hansle Parchment will join the likes of world champion David Oliver, world record-holder Aries Merritt, world indoor silver medallist Pascal Martinot-Lagarde and European champion Sergey Shubenkov.

World champion Asbel Kiprop has already signalled his intentions of running a fast time in the 1500m. Joining him will be world indoor champion Ayanleh Souleiman and 2011 world silver medallist Silas Kiplagat.

Elsewhere, European under-23 champion Pierre-Ambroise Bosse and US champion Duane Solomon have been added to the 800m, where they’ll face world record-holder David Rudisha, world champion Mohammed Aman and Olympic silver medallist Nijel Amos. And Alonso Edward, winner at the recent winner of the IAAF Diamond League meeting in Lausanne, will take on Justin Gatlin, Warren Weir and Christophe Lemaitre in the 200m.

Warren Weir & Christophe Lemaitre Vs Justin Gatlin. The 200m experts Warren Weir, Olympic Bronze medalist in 2012 and silver medalist at the world championship in 2013 on the distance, and Christophe Lemaitre, bronze medalist in 2011 and French record holder, will have a lot to do against the 100m world leader this year, Justin Gatlin with 9.87 in Beijing, but even more with 9.76 during the IAAF Diamond League in Eugene, unfortunately too-winded. With personal records at 19.79 for Warren Weir and 19.80 for Christophe Lemaitre on 200m, they will be the favorites against the 20.00 of Justin, but once in the starting blocks on the Louis II Stadium' track on July 18th, they will wipe the slate clean ...

Ahye sits out Diamond League
..Borel in shot put action

Published: Friday, July 18, 2014 (T&T Guardian)

Described as a precautionary move, world leading sprinter Michelle-Lee Ahye will sit out of today’s Diamond League 100 meter action in Monaco.

Ahye, who pulled up and collapsed on the track holding her hamstring on Wednesday after winning the women’s 200m events in Switzerland, was originally carded to line-up against Jamaican pair Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Veronica Campbell-Brown as well as USA’s Allyson Felix, today. However, she confirmed her decision to opt out of the race today on her Twitter account saying: “Won’t be competing this weekend resting up for Commonwealth.”

Ahye has confirmed that a cramp was the cause of her pulling up on Wednesday and was “nothing serious”. She is expected to compete at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, which runs from July 23 to August 3.

In Switzerlands, Ahye won both the women’s 100m and 200m races, in 11.09 seconds and 22.77 seconds, respectively. The latter time equalled her personal best she secured at the National Championships, last month. In the 100m, Ahye holds the world leading time, 10.85, which she also clocked in Port-of-Spain, last month.

Meanwhile, T&T’s top shot athlete, Cleopatra Borel will be the lone national representative in Monaco today. The women’s shot put will open proceedings. Borel currently sits in sixth position in Diamond League rankings.

Gatlin lights up Monaco
Story Created: Jul 18, 2014 at 8:54 PM ECT (T&T Express)

World and Olympic champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce finished down the field again but it was American Justin Gatlin who nabbed the headlines with a world-leading run in the men’s 200 metres at the Monaco Diamond League, yesterday.

Fraser-Pryce, without a victory in her last five outings finished a disappointing sixth, as American Tori Bowie took victory in the women’s 100 metres in a world-leading 10.80 seconds. Jamaican Veronica Campbell-Brown raced to second, dipping below 11 seconds to clock 10.96 seconds while Murielle Ahoure of Cote d’Ivoire finished third in a season-best time of 10.97 seconds.

Fraser-Pryce, who has struggled with a foot injury in recent months, still managed to post a season’s best time of 11.01, improving on the 11.10 she ran in Glasgow last weekend.

However, it was the resurgent Gatlin who took centre stage, clocking 19.68 seconds—the joint-eighth quickest of all time. The time was also a new record at the Monaco meet and it smashed his previous personal best of 19.86 seconds, set 12 years ago. Jamaican Nickel Ashmeade was second in 19.99 seconds while Frenchman Christophe Lemaitre finished third in a season-best 20.08 seconds.

Borel fourth in Monaco
Story Created: Jul 18, 2014 at 8:51 PM ECT (T&T Express)

Trinidad and Tobago’s Cleopatra Borel finished fourth as double Olympic champion, New Zealander Valerie Adams, recorded a 53rd straight win in world athletics when capturing the shot put at yesterday’s IAAF Diamond League meeting in Monaco.

Adams, the Diamond League record holder (21.03 metres), is favourite for the Commonwealth Games in Scotland. Yesterday, Adams threw 20.38 metres to take victory over Germany’s Christina Schwanitz (19.54m), while American Michelle Carter hurled the steel ball 19.05 metres for a third-place finish.

Borrel, meanwhile, put in a best throw of 18.96 metres to finish fourth of six competitors.

Russian Kolodyyko Yevgeniya (18.81m) and American Felisha Johnson (18.79m) filled the minor positions.
