Most cannot afford to go if they don't get funded. That clinic is very expensive. Not too many in the track world could afford to go there out of their own pockets.

Going to Racers is a big investment and a move of his base which will no doubt be disruptive.
Cedenio, Jehue and others have gone to MJ's facility to fix fundamentals in short term visits, then returned to their camps to reap the results.
Has any of the 100m men or women gone as well?

What I find funny is that posters were saying that since DB record is broken it will be the last time they have to hear about his comeback. In a way they are correct , it is no longer a comeback he has arrived. Such sweet irony

I disliked Gatlin as well but the man has proven himself by being mentally tough and persistent, let's see what he does in US nationals next weekend.

It would be great to see them both head-to-head later this summer.

Stop jumping the gun on DB before you blight the fellow.
When DB wins another major world senior medal after his solitary senior medal in 2003 at the World Champs then we can say he has arrived as a senior athlete.

I think he still has lots of work to do if he still wants to fulfill his potential at 29 going on 30 later this year.

I hope TTOC can fund him to go to the Michael Johnson Training Centre for a full assessment as that may help to finally see him joining the other top world class sprinters by next year barring injury.

Agreed. he can go for a visit to work on a few things, but I think the emotions are running high with the talk of moving to Racers or elsewhere. The sport requires stability to succeed and the local crew have obviously done a good job to get him back into shape. Not to mention he is 30 so doesn't really have the flexibility for trying new things.

Yeah looks like the 400m final was the race of the meet for real. Just imagine if Cedenio and Lendore were also involved and didn't sit the race out as they decided to do.

Quow edges Lalonde in thriller

Renny Quow edged Lalonde Gordon in a thrilling men's 400 metres final.

Gordon held the advantage coming off the final turn. But Quow was stronger in the final stages of the race, overhauling Gordon at the line to win in 45.08 seconds, the same time produced by second-placed Gordon. Quow beat his rival by just four-thousandths of a second.

Bellille breaks 16-year-old record

Janeil Bellille broke a 16-year-old record, the Trinidad and Tobago athlete clocking 51.83 seconds to improve on the 51.96 T&T standard established by Beverly Pierre way back in 1998.

Ahye in 10.88

Michelle-Lee Ahye clocked 10.88 seconds to capture the women's 100 metres title. In the semifinal round she had produced a 10.85 run - a new personal best and the fastest time in the world in 2014.

In the final, Kai Selvon was a distant second in 11.32 seconds, while bronze went to Reyare Thomas in 11.37.

Torpedo in record run

Richard "Torpedo" Thompson won the men's 100 metres title in 9.82 seconds - a new national record and the fastest time in the world this year. Keston Bledman was second in 10 seconds flat, while third spot went to Darrel Brown in 10.05.

Ahye leads the world

Michelle-Lee Ahye clocked a personal best and world-leading time in the women's 100 metres semis. The Trinidad and Tobago sprinter clocked 10.85 seconds to win the second heat. The clocking was just two-hundredths of a second outside the 10.83 national record, established by Kelly-Ann Baptiste at the National Championships last year.

Davis strikes gold in sprint hurdles

Good afternoon, and welcome to our coverage of the 2014 NGC/Sagicor Open Track & Field Championships, at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain.

Wayne Davis II is among the athletes who have struck gold this afternoon. Davis topped the men's 110 metres hurdles field in a Championship record time of 13.21 seconds, beating Mikel Thomas (13.45) and Durell Busby (13.64) into second and third, respectively.

Deborah John emerged victorious in the women's 100m hurdles in 13.36 seconds, finishing ahead of Josanne Lucas (13.41) and Cuban Belkis Milanes (13.43).

There were titles too for George Smith in the men's 1500 metres (4:00.64), Dawnel Collymore in the women's 1500m (4:48.31), Deandra Daniel in the women's high jump (1.75m), Cuba's Yarianna Martinez in the women's triple jump, and Akeem Stewart in the men's shot put (17.76m).

Flying Torpedo
Thompson thrills with 9.82 scorcher

By Kwame Laurence kwame.laurence@trinidadexpress.com
Story Created: Jun 21, 2014 at 9:03 PM ECT

Richard “Torpedo” Thompson produced an absolute sizzler at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain, yesterday.

The 29-year-old sprint star established a new national record, bolting to victory in the NGC/Sagicor National Open Track & Field Championship men’s 100 metres final in 9.82 seconds! The clocking was three-hundredths of a second faster than the 9.85 T&T standard established by the Torpedo back in 2011.

“I’m thrilled with the performance,” Thompson told the Express. “I didn’t come in chasing any time. The national record was the furthest thing from my mind. I knew I had a quality field to deal with, people like Rondel Sorrillo, Darrel Brown, Keston Bledman, Marc Burns, the usual suspects.”

By midpoint in the race, Thompson looked a winner, the Louisiana-based track star motoring to the line ahead of defending champion Bledman, the silver medallist in 10 seconds flat. There was a welcome return to form for Brown, the former world junior champion earning bronze in 10.05. Burns (10.21) and Sorrillo (10.23) finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

Michelle-Lee Ahye was on fire at the Crawford Stadium, seizing gold in the women’s 100m dash in a fast 10.88 seconds. Ahye darted to the front, and then opened up a huge gap on her rivals, Kai Selvon finishing a distant second in 11.32.

Ahye was even faster in the semi-final round. The 22-year-old sprinter had a personal best of 11.04 seconds ahead of the semis. At the end of the second heat, that clocking was a distant memory, Ahye winning in 10.85 seconds to shoot to the top of the 2014 world performance list. The time was just two-hundredths of a second slower than the 10.83 T&T record established by Kelly-Ann Baptiste at the 2013 National championships.

“It was unexpected,” said Ahye. “For the semis I was like wow. I was shocked. I was very excited.”

Janeil Bellille erased a 16-year-old national record from the books. The Texas A&M University student won the women’s 400m final in 51.83 seconds, bettering the 51.96 standard established by Beverly Pierre way back in 1998.

Renny Quow won the men’s 400m title, edging Lalonde Gordon into second spot. Both quartermilers clocked 45.08 seconds, but Quow had the edge in the photo finish, beating his rival by four-thousandths of a second. Jarrin Solomon bagged bronze in 45.59.

At the top of the home straight, Gordon was in front, but Quow reeled in the Olympic bronze medallist close to the end, before outleaning him at the line.

Wayne Davis II was superb in the men’s 110m hurdles, securing gold with a 13.21 seconds run—a new Championship record. Mikel Thomas picked up silver in 13.45, while bronze went to Durell Busby (13.64).

And Akeem Stewart threw the iron ball 17.76m to retain his men’s shot put title. Stewart and Hezekiel Romeo exchanged the lead throughout the six-round competition, Stewart eventually claiming gold with his final throw. Romeo finished second with a 17.55m effort.

The Championships continue from 2.30 this afternoon at the Crawford Stadium.

Thompson breaks record
Published: Sunday, June 22, 2014
Jalani Beckles (T&T Guardian)

Rebirth’s Richard Thompson broke his own national men’s 100 metre record yesterday afternoon, stopping the clock in 9.82 seconds to win gold on day two of the NGC/Sagicor Open Track and Field Championships at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Port-of-Spain, last night. Thompson, who held the previous record of 9.85 since 2011, was in a different class yesterday. At approximately the 60-metre mark Thompson, running out of lane three, already had a five-metre lead and gold was certain for the Olympic athlete.

Finishing behind Thompson was Simplex athlete Keston Bledman in a time of 10.00, while Thompson’s Rebirth team-mate Darrel Brown was third in 10.05. After the record breaking run Thompson was congratulated by his competitors and 100m women’s champion Michelle-Lee Ahye. A special moment followed, as Thompson called for his one-year-old son Rhys to join him on the track to celebrate. Thompson placed his son on his shoulders, capping off a memorable moment for the Thompson family.

Earlier, Abilene Wildcats athlete Jonathan Farinha was disqualified from the 100m men’s final for a false start, adding more tention to the race. Before the men’s 100m final, Thompson’s Rebirth team-mate Lee-Ahye easily won the women’s 100m final in 10.88, ahead of Air Bon Sonics’ Kai Selvon (11.32) and Reyare Thomas of Neon Trackers (11.37). In the semifinals, Lee-Ahye ran a lightning time of 10.85. The national record is 10.83, set by Kelly Ann Baptiste on June 22 last year. Following the sprints, a star-studded cast including Renny Quow, Lalonde Gordon and Jarrin Solomon lined up for the finals of the men’s 400m. Entering the last 100m Gordon had the lead. However, the Nike athlete could not hang on, as Zenith athlete Quow came back to edge Gordon on the line to win gold in 45.073, just ahead of Gordon in 45.077. Solomon grabbed bronze in 45.59.
Action on the last day today begins at 2.30 pm.

‘Torpedo’ Thompson sets new national record
Sunday, June 22 2014 (T&T Newsday)

RICHARD ‘Torpedo’ Thompson showed why he has been labeled a torpedo yesterday when he blazed his way to a new national record and gold medal in the Men’s 100 metre final at the Sagicor National Track and Field Championship at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo.

Only a day after he cruised to the semis and later final of the 100 metre dash, Thompson left the best for last, sprinting to a fast 9.82 seconds for the gold medal. In the heats on Friday last, Thompson ensured he got an early lead before cruised past the finish line. But yesterday the triple Olympic silver medallist had a point to prove, getting out of the blocks first for the lead and sprinting past the finish line to show his readiness for the coming Commonwealth Games.

He was followed in second position by Keston Bledman in a time of 10:00 flat while Darrel Brown underline his intentions to be among the country’s top sprinters once again, by securing third and the resulting bronze medal in 10:05 seconds.

Fourth in the race was Marc Burns in 10.21 and Rondel Sorrillo was fifth 10.26.

Among the Women- Michelle Lee Ahye did not disappoint in the 100 metre dash final crossing the finish line in 10.88 seconds. Kai Selvon snatched the silver medal by finishing second in 11.32 seconds while Rayare Thomas completed the top three with a time of 11.37 seconds.

Meanwhile Jamaal James won the two-lap 800 metres event in a time of one minute, 51.95 seconds fir his club Rebirth with Mark London taking second in 1:52.42 and Clifton Sylvester in third in 1:52.84 seconds.

Meanwhile Kyron Blaise took the long jump title with a distance of 7.28 metres. He got the better of Seon Michael Stafford in second in 6.98 metres.
