Lucas on show at President’s Classic

Josanne Lucas is among the athletes expected to be on show at today’s President’s Classic, at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain.

Lucas, the 2009 IAAF World Championship women’s 400 metres hurdles bronze medallist, was forced out of the 2012 London Olympics with a serious knee injury, and missed the entire 2013 season. But she is back on track in 2014, and keen to battle her way back to the top.

The President’s Classic is an invitational meet, and will also feature sprinters Rondel Sorrillo, Jonathan Farinha, Kyle Greaux and Reyare Thomas, and half-milers Jamaal James, Alena Brooks and Jessica James.

The first event at the Crawford Stadium today is scheduled for 4.20 p.m.

Walcott expected at President’s Classic
Saturday, June 14 2014 (T&T Newsday)

KESHORN WALCOTT is expected be on show today at the Hasley Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo, at the annual President’s Classic. Olympic gold medallist Walcott is expected to take part in his pet event javelin throw.

Walcott who opened his season locally at the 2014 International Twilight Games won with a heave of 79.33m.

He then went on to win at Beijing IAAF World Challenge with 83.94m.

National woman 100m hurdler Josanne Lucas will be also tin action at the Classic.

Alena Brooks who represented Trinidad and Tobago at the IAAF World Relays in Bahamas recently will be in the women’s 800m event. Gates open at 4.20 pm.

Sorrillo, Thomas win at President’s Classic

Rondell Sorrillo took the 100 metres sprint at the 2014 President’s Classic yesterday at Hasely Crawford Stadium, clocking 10.47 seconds to cruise to victory in the marquee event.

Sorrillo, running for La Brea Athletics eased into the race on a windy Saturday evening, and was comfortable in the end in edging LeSean Noel of UTT Fast Track, who stopped the clock at 105.8. Courtney Bascombe (Memphis Pioneers; 10.63) was third.

Sorrillo’s fellow national athlete, Reyare Thomas (Neon Trackers), grabbed the women’s equivalent in 11.48 in tougher circumstances, only eduging Kamaria Durant (11.49) of Simplex by a split second.

Jonathan Farinha (Abilene Wildcats) won the Boys Under-20 100m sprint as expected, his 10.44 seconds enough for victory over teammate Holland Cabara (10.62), while Akanni Hislop (Zenith) won the Boys Under-18 equivalent.

Jenea Spinks (12.36) of Neon Trackers was the Girls Under-18 100m winner.

Over 200m, Jereem Richards (Abilene Wildcats; Men), Asa Guevara (Abilene Wildcats; Boys Under-20), Timothy Frederick (Point Fortin New Jets; Boys Under-14) and Caliyah Wallace (Cougars; Girls Under-14) were the winners.

And Josanne Lucas, T&T’s former World Championships bronze medallist in the 400m hurdles event, won the women’s 100m hurdles for Tobago Falcons in 13.73, an easy victory over second-place Akila McShine (Cougars; 14.08)

Other notable results saw Alena Brooks (Memphis Pioneers) take the women’s 800m in 2:07.65, and Jamaal James (Rebirth) took the men’s version with a 1:50.54 run. Hezekial Romeo (Rebirth; 17.15m) beat clubmate Quincy Wilson (16.85m) to the men’s shot put title, and Chelsea James (Tobago Falcons; 13.97m) won among the women in that event.

Seon Michael Stafford of Defence Force had a best throw of 7.10m to take the men’s long jump, while his clubmate George Smith (4:05.79) led an Army to the podium in winning the men’s 1500m.

National juniors shine at President’s Classic
Published: Sunday, June 15, 2014 (T&T Guardian)

Several of T&T’s national juniors, including Ruebin Walters and Akanni Hislop, who are in preparation for the upcoming CAC Games were in winners’ row yesterday at the T&T National Association of Athletics Administrations (NAAATT) President’s Classic, staged at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, in Mucurapo.

Hislop, of Zenith, who is set to represent T&T in both the 100 and 200 metres events at the CAC event in Mexico, next month, won the Boys Under-18 100m dash in 10.64 seconds, ahead of Xavier Mulugata and David Winchester, who clocked 10.79 and 10.88 seconds, respectively.

Meanwhile, Walters, one of only two T&T hurdlers for the CAC Games eased to gold in the Men’s 110m hurdles winning easily in 14.49 seconds. The Memphis runner finished exactly a second ahead of Kuniba Steward of Falcons.

Among the women, Josanne Lucas of Falcons was once again the hurdles champion in the 100m distance. Lucas (13.73) also finished well ahead the runner-up, Akila McShine of Cougars (14.08) and Anya Akili of Zenith (15.99).

Yesterday’s meet will be followed by NGC/Sagicor National Open Championships, which will run from Friday to Sunday, at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.

Sorillo, Thomas win President's Classic 100m crowns

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad & Tobago - World Relay medallists Rondell Sorillo (La Brea Athletics) and Reyare Thomas (Neon Trackers) warmed up for next weekend’s NGC/Sagicor Open Championships by taking the 100m titles at the 3rd President’s Classic at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Port of Spain on Saturday (14 June).

Sorillo, who ran the third leg on T&T’s silver medal-winning men’s 4x100m at the inaugural IAAF World Relays Championships in Bahamas last month, took the men’s 100m title in 10.47. Ashron Sobers 10.57 finished second overall.

In the women’s 100m, Thomas won in 11.48 ahead of her World relay team mate, Kamaria Durant (Simplex) 11.49 while Carifta girls under 20 100m silver medallist Aaliyah Telesford (Pt. Fortin New Jets) was third (11.61).

World Championships 400m hurdles bronze medallist Josanne Lucas (Tobago Falcons) had her first race at home in close to two years. She won the women’s 100m hurdles in 13.73. The national 400m hurdles record holder was back in competition after injury ruined her participation at the 2012 London Olympic Games. Lucas’ time was 0.44 seconds off her season’s best of 13.29. The 30 year old created history at the 2009 World Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Berlin, Germany, when she became the first local woman to win a medal at the global senior meet. Then she won bronze in the one lap hurdles final in a national record time of 53.20.
