Lendore bids for NCAA gold
By Kwame Laurence kwame.laurence@trinidadexpress.com
Story Created: Jun 10, 2014 at 10:15 PM ECT (T&T Express)

Deon Lendore will try to turn silver into gold at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Outdoor Track & Field Championships, in Eugene, Oregon, USA, this week.

At the 2013 Championships, Lendore finished second in the men’s 400 metres final in 44.94 seconds. The Texas A&M University athlete is hoping to go one better in Friday’s one-lap final. But first he must negotiate today’s qualifying round.

Lendore has been drawn in heat four in the first of three heats. Two lanes to his right, in six, will be another Trinidad and Tobago/Texas A&M athlete, Carlyle Roudette.

Lendore is the favourite for gold thanks to the 44.36 seconds personal best he produced to win the Southeastern Conference (SEC) title, in Kentucky, on May 18. The 21-year-old quartermiler is third on the 2014 world performance list, behind Grenada’s reigning Olympic champion Kirani James and American LaShawn Merritt, the 2013 World Championship gold medallist.

Both James and Merritt clocked 43.97 seconds at the Prefontaine Classic IAAF Golden League meet, in Oregon, on May 31. It was James, though, who struck gold, getting to the line just ahead of Merritt.

T&T will have two representatives in the NCAA Championship men’s 110m hurdles—defending champion Wayne Davis II, of Texas A&M, and University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee senior Durell Busby. They have both been drawn in heat one for tomorrow’s qualifying round.

T&T/Texas A&M athlete, Janeil Bellille will run in heat three in today’s women’s 400m hurdles.

In the women’s 100m hurdles, tomorrow, North Dakota State University’s Deborah John will be on show in heat two.

And Pennsylvania State University’s Steve Waithe will bid for honours in Saturday’s men’s triple jump.

Lendore, Roudette, Bellille and Louisiana State University (LSU) sprinter Shermund Allsop are all expected to see relay action at the NCAA Championships. Lendore is likely to compete in the men’s 4x100m and 4x400m events, Roudette in the men’s 4x400m, Bellille in the women’s 4x400m, and Allsop in the men’s 4x100m.

Lendore, Bellille into NCAA finals
By Kwame Laurence kwame.laurence@trinidadexpress.com
Story Created: Jun 12, 2014 at 9:14 PM ECT (T&T Express)

Deon Lendore has been drawn in lane four for today’s men’s 400 metres final, at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Outdoor Track & Field Championships, in Eugene, Oregon, USA.

Lendore goes into the championship race as the fastest qualifier, his 45.18 seconds run having earned the Texas A&M University student the easiest of victories in heat one on Wednesday, the opening day of the collegiate meet. His closest challenger clocked 45.83.

Another Trinidad and Tobago/Texas A&M athlete, Carlyle Roudette finished fifth in the same heat in 46.36 seconds, and did not advance to the eight-man final. He was 14th overall. Texas A&M’s Janeil Bellille will make her bid for precious metal in the women’s 400m hurdles from lane six. The T&T athlete topped heat three on Wednesday in 56.44 seconds--the third fastest time in the qualifying round.

Also on Wednesday, Shermund Allsop was part of the Louisiana State University (LSU) men’s 4x100m team that finished second in heat two in 38.85 seconds, advancing to tomorrow’s final third fastest, behind heat two winners Texas A&M (38.60) and heat three victors University of Florida (38.77).

After press time, last night (T&T time), Wayne Davis II began the defence of his men’s 110m hurdles title. The Texas A&M University senior was drawn to run in lane five in the first of three qualifying heats. Another T&T athlete, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee student Durell Busby was in lane seven in the same heat.

In the women’s 100m hurdles preliminaries, North Dakota State University’s Deborah John competed in heat two. She was drawn in lane one.

The men’s and women’s 4x400m heats were also contested last night.

Deon Lendore claims NCAA 400m title
June 14th 7:53am (TrackAlerts.com)

EUGENE – Texas A&M Aggie junior Deon Lendore completed a sweep of NCAA titles in winning the 400 meters with a 45.02 as he added the outdoor title to his indoor crown on Friday’s action at Hayward Field.

Lendore had to contend with Oregon’s Mike Berry in the homestretch of the 400 as the crowd cheered the Duck home. With a lean at the line it was Lendore with a 45.02 victory over a 45.07 from Berry. LSU’s Vernon Norwood placed third in 45.45 ahead of a 45.49 by Pittsburgh’s Brycen Spratling while Florida’s Najee Glass finished fifth in 45.63.

In winning his second NCAA 400 title this season Lendore became just the second Aggie to capture the NCAA Outdoor 400 meters. The other A&M sprinter to do so was Curtis Mills in 1969 when he set the school record of 44.67 that Lendore recently broke with a 44.36 in winning the SEC title.

A runner-up in last year’s NCAA final on the Hayward Field track, Lendore used the crowd’s reaction towards Berry as motivation to battle to the finish.

“I was trying to get the double because it’s a nice double to have,” stated Lendore. “So I’m thankful I accomplished that goal.

The Aggie women scored 31 points on the third day of the meet to reach a total of 41. A&M men produced 14 points to improve its tally to 17.5 points.

Oregon leads the women’s team chase with 43 points while A&M is second with 41. Florida and Texas are tied in third with 29 each and Georgia is fifth with 25. The Ducks have a larger lead in the men’s team scoring with 53 points ahead of Florida’s 28 with Georgia third at 24 and Wisconsin fourth with 20. Texas has 19.5 points in fifth while the Aggies are currently sixth with 17.5.

Saturday’s final day includes some key events for Texas A&M with the 4x100 and 4x400 relays, defending NCAA champion Wayne Davis II in the 110 hurdles, as well as returning NCAA runner-up Kamaria Brown and SEC champion Olivia Ekponé in the 200 meters. In addition Devin Bogert is in the javelin and Olabanji Asekun competes in the triple jump.

The Aggies totaled 16 team points in the 400 hurdles as Janeil Bellille (Trinidad & Tobago) placed third in a time of 56.14 behind SEC champion Kendra Harrison of Kentucky (55.55). LSU’s and Jamaican tandem of Nikita Tracey (56.35) and Chanice Chase (56.51) placed fourth and fifth.

In the 100 meter finals the Aggies scored seven points in the women’s race and picked up four points in the men’s race.

The Aggie tandem of Olivia Ekponé and Jennifer Madu, running into a -3.4 headwind, placed fifth and sixth in the women’s final with times of 11.43 and 11.54.

The race was won by Alabama’s Remona Burchell, the NCAA Indoor 60 champion, with an 11.25 while Morolake Akinosun of Texas finished second in 11.33. Then Oregon’s Jennifer Prandini claimed third after a slow start from the blocks in 11.42 (11.416) over Florida’s Shayla Sanders 11.42 (11.417).

Shavez Hart clocked 10.15 (1.8 wind) for fifth place in the men’s 100 as Baylor’s Trayvon Bromell broke the world junior record with a 9.97 victory. Florida State’s Dentarius Locke repeated his runner-up finish from 2013 with a 10.02 over USC’s Aaron Brown (10.07) while Justin Walker of Northwestern State placed fourth in 10.12.

Trinidad and Tobago's Wayne Davis II will be in lane five for the defence of his National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Outdoor Track & Field Championship men's 110 metres hurdles title, in Eugene, Oregon, USA, this evening (T&T time).

In the qualifying round, late on Thursday, Davis won heat one in 13.36 seconds, the Texas A&M University student leading all qualifiers into the final.

Another T&T athlete, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee student Durell Busby finished fourth in the same heat in 13.75, earning a spot in the final as a "fastest loser". He has been drawn in lane one for the championship race.

In the women's 100m hurdles preliminaries, Deborah John finished fifth in heat two and 15th overall in 13.47 seconds. The top eight advanced to the final.

Carlyle Roudette and Deon Lendore were part of the Texas A&M men's 4x400m team that returned a time of three minutes, 00.76 seconds to win heat one, advancing to this evening's final as the fastest qualifiers.

And Janeil Bellille helped Texas A&M to victory in heat two in the women's 4x400m in 3:28.89. Bellille is expected to be back in the line-up for the championship race.

Also on show today will be Steve Waithe. The Pennsylvania State University student bids for honours in the men's triple jump. And in the men's 4x100m final, Shermund Allsop is expected to be part of the Louisiana State University (LSU) team, while Lendore is likely to be in the Texas A&M line-up.

Late yesterday, Bellille battled for precious metal in the women's 400m hurdles, and Lendore competed in the men's 400m final.

Lendore strikes NCAA gold
Published: Sunday, June 15, 2014 (T&T Guardian)

T&T Olympian Deon Lendore, a junior at Texas A&M brought glory yet again for his school when he captured a gold medal in the 400m event at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, in Eugene, Oregon, USA, on Friday. Lendore, who earlier this year won the NCAA 400m indoor crown, stopped the clock in 45.02 seconds, after winning heat one in 45.18.
He became only the second runner from his school to capture the 400m outdoor crown. The last Texas A&M athlete to win it was Curtis Mills in 1969, who set a school record of 44.67, which Lendore broke recently with a 44.36-second effort in winning the South-Eastern conference title. It was the perfect double for Lendore, who finished runner-up in the outdoor event in 2013.

Lendore had to endure the pressure of home-favourite, Mike Berry, who held a good challenge against the T&T runner particularly in the final 70m. Berry placed second in 45.07.
In March, Lendore claimed his first US-national individual title after winning the NCAA Indoor Championships 400m final in 45.21 seconds. Lendore, who has been described by his coach Pat Henry as the fastest quarter-miler in the country said he was pleased with his recent achievements. “I was trying to get the double because it’s a nice double to have,” he said. “So I’m thankful I accomplished that goal. I know the crowd was helping Berry a lot, but I tried to use the crowd to help me power back into the lead and get the win.” Lendore was expected to feature in his team’s 4x400m final, which took place last evening.

Meanwhile, another T&T athlete, Janeil Bellille, who represents Texas A&M, placed third in the women’s 400m hurdles on Friday. She clocked 56.14 seconds, an improvement on her 56.44 which she ran a day prior in the semifinal. The race was won by her team-mate, Shamier Little in 55.07 for a school record.

Trinidad and Tobago quartermilers, Deon Lendore and Carlyle Roudette teamed up with American Aldrich Bailey and Grenadian Bralon Taplin for gold in the men’s 4x400 metres relay, on the final day of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Outdoor Track & Field Championships, in Eugene, Oregon, USA, on Saturday.

Roudette split 44.7 seconds on the second leg, while Lendore anchored in 44.11 as Texas A&M University won in two minutes, 59.60 seconds, missing out on the American collegiate record by just one-hundredth of a second. University of Florida clocked 3:00.42 to finish second, ahead of Louisiana State University (LSU) in 3:01.60.

“It was an amazing experience and I’m happy to be here as a senior,” Roudette said, in an interview on the Texas A&M website, www.aggieathletics.com. “It was an amazing run, I couldn’t ask for a better way to go out. I just wanted to put my team in a good position to win. I was able to come back on Florida and close the gap so we could make it a close run for Deon on the anchor.”
Lendore, the individual 400m champion, said the collegiate record was a team goal.

“Going into the race we had a lot of hope for each other especially after the time we ran in the semifinal (3:00.76). We knew there was a chance we could break the collegiate record. We came so close, but we missed it this time. Hopefully next year or in the near future we will get the record.”

Earlier on Saturday, Lendore anchored Texas A&M to silver in the men’s 4x100m in 38.84 seconds. He outleaned another T&T athlete at the line, Shermund Allsop and his LSU teammates taking bronze in 38.85. Florida (38.73) grabbed gold.

T&T’s Janeil Bellille was part of the Texas A&M team that secured silver in the women’s 4x400m in 3:25.63. University of Texas won in a meet record time of 3:24.21, while third spot went to University of Oregon (3:29.03).

“I’m really blessed and happy to be part of an amazing team,” Bellille said. “Today meant a lot to the team, so I came out and put my best foot forward in the relay.”

Texas A&M captured the women’s team title with 75 points. Texas (66) and Oregon (59) were second and third, respectively.

In the men’s team competition, Texas A&M finished third with 41.5 points. Oregon (88) captured the title, while Florida (70) secured the runner-up spot. LSU (29 points), Steve Waithe’s Pennsylvania State University (5) and Durell Busby’s University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (2) were fourth, 44th and 64th, respectively.

On Saturday, Waithe finished fifth in the men’s triple jump with a 16.14m effort—a new personal best.
