T&T U20s prepare for W/Cup campaign without skipper Shannon
Lasana Liburd

The Trinidad and Tobago National Under-20 football team entered the final stage of preparations for its New Zealand 2015 FIFA Under-20 World Cup this weekend when head coach Derek King welcomed his squad to their training camp in Miami Lakes, Fort Lauderdale. But there were four notable absentees.

Team trainer Sheron Joseph was unable to get a visa for the trip and doctor Terrence Babwah was unavailable while the Sportt Company and Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) decided not to fund the travel of press officer Shaun Fuentes, who also does video work for the technical staff.

However, a more telling absence was national under-20 captain Shannon Gomez who cannot enter the United States at present as he is awaiting a green card.

Gomez returned to Trinidad last month to join the team in training. If the DIRECTV W Connection right back had stayed in the United States, he would have been able to join his colleagues in Fort Lauderdale before jetting off to Jamaica with the young “Soca Warriors” for the CONCACAF Under-20 Championship, which kicks off on 9 January 2015.

But then the Warriors did not know whether their Fort Lauderdale camp would come off or not due to uncertainty over funding.

Gomez is the only specialist right back in the national youth team and his absence for their final tune-up matches again demonstrates the setbacks King faces due to administrative issues beyond his control.

The Under-20 team’s trip to Florida was covered by the Sportt Company while TSTT met the full cost of accommodation and meals. The team, minus Gomez and two technical staff members, finally got to Miami Lakes on Friday evening after leaving Trinidad in three batches between Wednesday and Friday due to visa delays.

And, on Saturday, the teenagers faced a strong assembled United States XI in a 70-minute scrimmage match behind closed doors at the Sunrise Holiday Inn Ground.

The Warriors lost 2-0 but King described it as a good outing for his troops against fast and technically competent opponents. He singled out midfielders Matthew Woo Ling, Neveal Hackshaw and Jabari Mitchell as well defender Leland Archer and goalkeeper Johan Welch for their performances.

“We got a chance to mix it up and take a look at all the players and I am pleased with the level of play at this crucial stage heading into the tournament,” King told the TTFA Media. “I am particularly impressed with the level of organization we showed in attack with (Matthew) Woo Ling, (Neveal) Hacksaw and (Jabari) Mitchell handling their roles well. (Leland) Archer also marshalled the defence well and Goalkeeper Johan Welch displayed impressive distribution of the football.

“So, all in all, we are rounding into form.”

Former “Strike Squad” midfielder Richard Chinapoo, who now coaches in the United States, was a guest at the scrimmage and told the TTFA Media that he felt optimistic about what he saw.

“Given the fact that the team only arrived a couple days ago, they represented well and showed balance,” Chinapoo told the TTFA Media. “Clearly we have options with the second unit demonstrating as high a level as the first in most areas which gives us options…

“There are things to be tweaked but if I was the coach I would be pleased. All we need is a few more games to fine tune things for next week.”

The Warriors should be in action again from 7 pm on Monday when they face the Weston United Alumni at Vizcaya Park in Marimar. Meanwhile, Gomez is expected to leave Trinidad for Kingston, early this week, where he will wait on his teammates.

T&T U-20s fine tune in Miami.
T&T Guardian Reports.

This country’s Under-20 men’s national football team has settled in with its full compliment of 20 players at the training camp at Miami Lakes, USA as it fine tunes for Friday’s Concacaf Under-20 Championship opener against host Jamaica in Kingston.

The last batch of ten players arrived from Port-of-Spain on Friday, allowing coach Derek King to move full speed ahead with his training sessions with skipper Shannon Gomez and his teammates ahead of the 12-team tournament which serves as a qualifier for this year’s Fifa Under-20 World Cup in New Zealand.

T&T engaged in their first bit of match practice with a 70-minute scrimmage against a USA Soccer Academy outfit behind closed doors which ended 2-0 in favour of the home-team at the Sunrise Holiday Inn Ground.

“We got a chance to mix it up and take a look at all the players and I am pleased with the level of play at this crucial stage heading into the tournament,” King said.

King indicated that the opponents were fast and technically correct and this gave him and his staff a perfect opportunity to analyse their charges as they are in the process of finalizing the squad for the opening encounter of the championship.

“I am particularly impressed with the level of organisation we showed in attack with Woo Ling (Matthew), Hacksaw (Naveal) and Mitchell (Jabari) handling their roles well. Archer (Leland) also marshaled the defence well and Goalkeeper Johan Welch displayed impressive distribution of the football, so all in all we are rounding into form,” King added.

Taking a guest spot on the staff bench for the scrimmage was former national team defender Richard Chinapoo who was also pleased with the level of organisation shown in attack as well as the chemistry surrounding the entire unit.

Chinapoo who had a stellar career in the United States which included a stint with the famed New York Cosmos recently relocated to Miami from Pennsylvania and accepted an invitation from Goalkeeper Coach Michael Maurice to view the match. “There are things to be tweaked but if I was the coach I would be pleased. All we need is a few more games to fine tune things for next week,” Chinapoo added.

Those games are already in the works according to manager Captain Douglas Archer, with the first being at 7 pm tonight (Monday) versus the Weston United Alumni at Vizcaya Park in Marimar.

In addition to host Jamaica, T&T, the reigning Caribbean Football Union Under-20 champions after blanking Haiti 3-0 on a Kadeen Corbin hat-trick at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, in early September, will also meet Aruba (January 11), Guatemala (January 14) and Panama (January 18) before ending round-robin play against USA three days later.

The National Stadium in Kingston and the Montego Bay Sports Complex will each play host to Group A matches, while the latter venue hosts all the action in Group B, and the final phase on January 24.

Group B comprises Mexico, the two-time defending Concacaf Under-20 champions; Cuba, Canada, El Salvador, Honduras and Haiti.

At the end of the group play, the top team from each group advances to the World Cup, and the second and third place nations from each group advance to the final day knockout phase, with the chance to dispute one of a pair of play-in matches which will determine Concacaf’s other two World Cup spots at the Fifa Under-20 World Cup New Zealand 2015.

The young Soca Warriors are also carded to meet Canada U-20s during the Miami camp ahead of their departure for Kingston on January 7.

T&T U-20s lose second warm-up.
T&T Express Reports.

Trinidad and Tobago Under-20 men’s footballers will depart Miami for Kingston today ahead of the final round of CONCACAF Qualifiers for the 2015 FIFA Under 20 Men’s World Cup in New Zealand.

The squad, under head coach Derek King, completed their second training fixture on Monday night, losing 2-1 to the Weston United Alumni at Vizcaya Park in Miramar. Akeem Garcia was the lone scorer for T&T which also fell 2-0 to a US Soccer Development Eleven on the weekend.

“Game two was a decent exercise for us. We started the game well. We conceded two late goals. We are finalising our starting eleven and the first team in this game played quite well,” King said.

“Regardless of the result, we saw good ball movement and we were solid defensively which is important for us at the international level,” the coach added.

“I would like to thank the Ministry of Sport and the TTFA for allowing us the opportunity for the training camp because at this level the guys need this international preparation,” he said.

“I think come Friday we will be ready for the opening game against Jamaica. We will take each game as a final but our first focus will be on the opening game versus Jamaica,” the T&T coach concluded.

Here we have All the usual 3 Bad omens. Loosing to a sh***y training squad, claiming that results of such matches don't count, and then claiming to be ready to face the opposition.

Regardless, I feel for King, his staff and the all players. They are probably the most promising upcoming footballers in close to a decade but they will be going into battle woefully underprepared. I wish them all the best. They need our prayers and support bad.

U-20 men start CONCACAF final qualifiers in Kingston.
By Shaun Fuentes (TTFA).

Trinidad and Tobago Under 20 team captain Shannon Gomez says this country will start the CONCACAF Under 20 Championship by approaching Friday’s opening game against Jamaica as though it were a final.

Gomez was speaking on the eve of the match as head coach Derek King and his team headed to a practice session at a training pitch located near to the National Stadium in Kingston, venue for the match which kicks off at 9pm TT time.

T&T arrived on Kingston on Wednesday following a short training camp in Miami where they played two training matches against the Westin United Alumni and a US Soccer Development outfit.

Gomez was optimistic saying  T&T were in no mood to be push overs. T&T were knocked out in the Caribbean phase of qualification last time around in 2013 during the regional leg in Jamaica as well.

“One of the goals for this tournament, captaining the team as well, is qualifying for the youth World Cup and letting the others know we are not the underdogs in this tournament and that we are one of the big dogs. We didn’t come here to lie down to any team,” Gomez said.

“We will treat every team with the same respect but  on the field of play it’s a dog fight out there and we are going after every point. We will go for a win in every game and try to qualify straight to the World Cup,” Gomez said.

“The football style of Jamaica is rugged and they run for the entire game. We will go out and treat this game against one of our biggest rivals as a final just like we’ll do for every other game,” he added.

T&T were crowned Caribbean champions in 2014 but did not face off with the young “Reggae Boyz” who were already through to the CONCACAF Finals as hosts and were not required to contest the Caribbean championship.

But a hattrick in the 3-0 win over Haiti in the final by Kadeem Corbin saw T&T lift the Cup in convincing fashion and they will surely want to prove their worth against the home team which is coming off two training games against Cuba, losing one and drawing the other.

Jamaica also played against the likes of Peru and Paraguay last month in Venezuela, going down heavily in those matches in which they lost three and conceded 12 goals.

But King is not in the mood to take Theodore Whitmore’s team lightly.

“Our approach will be very serious with the mindset of taking three points. Jamaica at home will always be solid and their coach likes to play attacking football. We will be compact and tight in the opening stages but we will not be playing defensively because we want to get three points to start this tournament,” King told TTFA Media.

“The mood has been in camp in Jamaica. All the players are fit and available for selection. They are all eager to get things rolling. Like I said before, every game is like a final in this tournament.”

The likes of Levi Garcia, Brendon Creed, Duane Muckette and Ricardo John will want to ensure T&T are in top gear while goalkeeper Johan Welch will hope his defense maintains discipline and keep the opponents off the score sheet.

There are two other matches on the cards tomorrow at the same venue with Aruba meeting Panama from 3:30pm and United States and Guatemala clashing from 5:30pm.

The Junior “Soca Warriors”  are in Group A along with  Jamaica, Aruba, Panama, the United States and Guatemala.

Group B includes Haiti, Canada, Mexico, Cuba, Honduras and El Salvador, in order of position drawn.

The tournament will crown the Confederation champion at this age level, and qualify four teams to the FIFA Under-20 World Cup New Zealand 2015.

The top team from each group after round-robin play advances to the World Cup, and the second and third place nations from each group advance to the final day knockout phase, with the chance to dispute one of a pair of play-in matches which will determine CONCACAF's other two World Cup spots, as stated by CONCACAF.

Muckette fancies T&T's chances in CONCACAF tourney.
By Shaun Fuentes (TTFA).

United States College-based midfielder Duane Muckette has faced Jamaica before at the CONCACAF level, captaining this country’s National Under 17 team in their 2011 CONCACAF Final round clash which ended 2-2.

On Friday he will suit up as the most experienced member of the current T&T Men’s Under 20 team for their opening CONCACAF qualifier against Jamaica at the national stadium in Kingston. Muckette also captained the previous Under 20 team which failed to make the CONCACAF Finals in 2013. He and Akeem Garcia are the only two players from the both that squad and the Under 17 team of 2011 who will be back in action today.

“I expect this game to be a tough one. Jamaica is a very physical team and plays with a fairly good deal of pace,” Muckette told TTFA Media as he looked ahead to the encounter.

“Being the home team doesn’t make it any better for us. However, this is nothing we can’t handle. We will approach the game focusing on us; focus on our game plan and our style,” he continued.

The University of South Florida standout spoke about the recent training camp in Miami, saying it brought some benefits to the team’s readiness for the competition which features top  confederation teams such as United States, Panama, Honduras, Mexico, Canada and Mexico among others.

“The Miami training camp was good. It helped for a lot of things. It took the players away, where we were able to focus on football and the task at hand. It caused the players to build a stronger bond and made sure that we are on the same page, as far as what we want for this team and how we’re going to go about trying to achieve it,” he stated.

T&T didn’t have many warm up matches since copping the Caribbean Championship with a 3-0 win over Haiti in Port of Spain in September, but the former Queen's Royal College student felt the two games in Miami played its role in helping the team.

“The games did help. It gave the staff a better idea of the team and what needs to be done. And I am very confident that we will get it right. I am enjoying these players. This is a good bunch of players as well as a good bunch of young men.

We are showing the right mentality and spirit towards the tournament. We all understand the task at hand and the importance of it, and we are willing to put that before our personal desires. This team understands the word “team” and this is what makes me confident.

T&T faces Jamaica in their opening match from 8pm tonight (9pm TT time) at the National Stadium in Kingston, United States meets Guatemala and Aruba tackles Panama in their two earlier matches this evening.

Scotiabank sponsors U-20 Tournament

Scotiabank, as part of their recently announced partnership with the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association of Football (CONCACAF), is proud to sponsor the CONCACAF Under-20 Championship tournament and support future football stars.

From January 9-24, 2015, twelve countries will gather in Jamaica to compete in the tournament, which determines the regional youth champion and the Confederation's four qualifiers for the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup in New Zealand taking place May 30 to June 20, 2015.

"Scotiabank is proud and thrilled to support these young athletes who all share the same passion for football," said John Doig, Scotiabank's Chief Marketing Officer. "We are looking forward to seeing the future stars of football come together for what promises to be a great tournament."

The 2015 CONCACAF Under-20 Championship tournament will be hosted at the National Stadium in Kingston and the Montego Bay Sports Complex in Montego Bay. The participating countries are Aruba, Canada, Cuba, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, Trinidad & Tobago and the USA. On December 9, Scotiabank announced that it has become the Official Bank of CONCACAF and the league's first official partner. As part of this agreement, Scotiabank will also become the title sponsor of the Champions League and the Caribbean Nations Cup and a sponsor of the Gold Cup.

The multi-year agreement also includes support for multiple CONCACAF youth tournaments including the 2016 Olympic qualifying events and the Men's and Women's Under-20, Under-17 and Under-15 tournaments. The newly-named Scotiabank Champions League tournament will resume in February 2015.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.
