U-20 MEN'S TEAM OFF TO MIAMI FOR TRAINING CAMP ON NEW YEAR'S DAY

Trinidad and Tobago’s Men’s National Under 20 team will depart for a training camp in Miami on January 1st for the final leg of preparations ahead of the CONCACAF Final Round of World Cup Qualification in Jamaica.

The 20-man squad will be based at the Shula’s Hotel and Resort in Miami Lakes and will train at the St Thomas University for the camp which includes two training matches before departing for Kingston on January 7th.

TTFA’S National Team’s Operations Manager William Wallace confirmed on Christmas Eve that the Ministry of Sport and the Sport Company of Trinidad and Tobago will fund the team’s campaign for the final round of qualification in Jamaica while a contribution from Telecommunications Services of Trinidad and Tobago (TSTT) will cover the expenses for the training camp in Miami.

Wallace continued discussions with the involved parties and received confirmation of their commitment to the team on Wednesday.  All flight arrangements as well as hotel and training site bookings have also been finalized.

The TTFA wishes to thank the Ministry of Sport, SPORTT and TSTT for their generous contribution towards the National Under 20 Men’s Team in its quest to qualify for the 2015 FIFA Under 20 Men’s World Cup in New Zealand.

Team head coach Derek King, who led T&T to the Caribbean Under 20 title earlier this  year with a convincing 3-0 win over Haiti in the final, said he was looking forward to the commencement of the much needed training camp for the junior “Soca Warriors”.

“This camp is a much welcomed one for the team. It’s an excellent opportunity for us to be together as a team in a camp environment before our first match in the tournament,” King told TTFA Media today.

“We really appreciate the effort of the Association and also very important for us,  the contributions of the Ministry of Sport the Sportt Company and TSTT to ensure we could get the training camp arranged and the team can go into the competition without the off the field headaches,” King added.

Joining the squad with be Duane Muckette, the University of South Florida midfielder as well as Brendon Creed, the captain of the previous Under 17 National team while forward Ricardo John of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and US College-based defender Leland Archer  are also coming in.

“These player such as Muckette, Creed and John will definitely add some quality to what we already have with the likes of Corbin, Levi Garcia and the other boys who did exceptionally well for us in the Caribbean Championship. The sessions this week were of a good quality with a lot of intensity and it’s a good sign of us. We intend to carry this straight into the Miami camp and the tournament in Jamaica,” King said.

T&T will play two training  games against local teams on January 3 and 5 and King is also hopeful that his team will get the opportunity to play against international opposition that will be in Miami during the same period. That particular match is yet to be finalized.

The T&T Under 20 team has  been in training for the past few weeks and there was a two-day break before sessions resume on  Saturday prior to the team’s departure on Thursday.

T&T will open the CONCACAF Final Round of Qualification against hosts Jamaica in Kingston on January 9th.

The Junior “Soca Warriors”  are in Group A along with  Jamaica, Aruba, Panama, the United States and Guatemala.  Group B includes Haiti, Canada, Mexico, Cuba, Honduras and El Salvador, in order of position drawn.

The tournament will crown the Confederation champion at this age level, and qualify four teams to the FIFA Under-20 World Cup New Zealand 2015.  The top team from each group after round-robin play advances to the World Cup, and the second and third place nations from each group advance to the final day knockout phase, with the chance to dispute one of a pair of play-in matches which will determine CONCACAF's other two World Cup spots, as stated by CONCACAF.

When players get visas is it a regular type visa normal citizens get (10 years, 5 years, etc) or is it a one trip kind of visa, like after the said trip visas expires?

The short answer is that they are issued B-1 visas  ... which are distinct from the B-2 visas that "normal citizens" travel on for tourism purposes.

The visas are not issued for the longer periods associated with multiple entry as apply in the circumstance of the B-2s. Single-entry awards are common.

Tappa cancels Xmas
Jamaica Observer

Just a few weeks prior to the start of the CONCACAF Under-20 Championship, Jamaica's head coach Theodore 'Tappa' Whitmore believes his players will have to step up the pace following their dismal showing at the Simon Bolivar Tournament in Venezuela.

Jamaica lost all three games -- 1-3 to eventual champion Paraguay; 1-4 to Peru and 1-5 to Venezuela as they warmed up for the World Cup qualifiers they will host between January 9-24.

Because the team is not where he wants it to be, Whitmore has cancelled any perceived Christmas break, instead keeping the players in camp for extra work.

"When you talk about professional football you don't talk about holidays, so there will be no Christmas and we will see the committed people," said Whitmore.

"We have a couple players from overseas already in the squad and we have Michael Seaton now to join," he added.

"We have a lot of work to do in a short space of time," Whitmore told the Jamaica Observer on Tuesday, sounding the battle trumpet.

At the recent championship, the former Reggae Boyz star underlined a combination of things that went wrong.

"The pace of the game is a bit different than ours and I think we didn't adjust. We made a lot of defensive errors that caused the goals and at international level we can't give up goals like these," he noted.

With Jamaica set to open against Caribbean neighbours and arch rival Trinidad and Tobago at the National Stadium, Whitmore believes there are indeed some positives from the Simon Bolivar experience.

"There are a lot of positives because of the whole experience with the guys playing at a different level and I guess it would have sunk in now. The attitude, the mentality has to change to play at a faster pace," said Whitmore.

"There is still a lot of work, not only at the national level, but at the local level because most of the times when the players come to the national team for a short period of time they have to make a transition, so there is a lot of positives that can be taken from it," he added.

Jamaica are drawn in Group A alongside Trinidad & Tobago, Aruba, Panama, United States and Guatemala, while the Group B teams are Haiti, Canada, Mexico, Cuba, Honduras and El Salvador.

The National Stadium in Kingston and the Montego Bay Sports Complex in St James will each play host to Group A matches.

The Montego Bay Sports Complex will hosts all the action in Group B and the final phase on January 24 when CONCACAF crowns a champion. The top team from each group after round-robin play advances to the World Cup.

The second and third place nations from each group will advance to the knockout phase where they will fight for the final two CONCACAF World Cup spots.

Improved Stadium Lights for CONCACAF U-20s
Jamaica Observer

KINGSTON, Jamaica — All indications are that the lights at the National Stadium will be good enough to host matches in the CONCACAF Under-20 tournament, scheduled to start January 9, 2015.

That is according to Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) boss Captain Horace Burrell, who expressed optimism after an inspection carried out by regional body CONCACAF late on Monday.

Recently, Burrell criticised Independence Park Limited (IPL), which runs the National Stadium, for failing to meet the guidelines set by CONCACAF.

Burrell had said that the IPL, under the supervision of general manager Major Desmon Brown, was being tardy while the country ran the risk of having the tournament "taken away" and staged in another country.

But given the short time to the start of the tournament and the various obligations involved, such a switch would have been unlikely.

On Tuesday, Burrell held an optimistic view.

"The CONCACAF representative Mr Kevin Messam arrived in the island yesterday and went straight to the National Stadium with his equipment where he met with Major Brown and his technical team. The lights were all turned on and as we understand it there has been a marked improvement in the standard of the lighting," Burrell told OBSERVER ONLINE.

"However, we expect to get the official position on the situation within the next 24 hours. We should have a formal report from the CONCACAF headquarters in the United States within 24 hours," the JFF president added.

In an Observer article published on Sunday, Burrell said CONCACAF representatives visited the stadium on three occasions and were not satisfied with the standard of the lighting of the football field.

King selects US-based quintet in T&T U-20 squad; Warriors await visa appointments
By Lasana Liburd (Wired868)

There were four new inclusions but no major surprises today when Trinidad and Tobago national under-20 head coach Derek King named his 20-man to contest next month’s CONCACAF Championship in Jamaica.

The top four teams at CONCACAF level will advance to the New Zealand 2015 FIFA Under-20 World Cup.

The young “Soca Warriors” lifted the Caribbean crown in September—albeit in a competition that did not include regional rival, Jamaica—and King believes his team is even stronger now.

Caribbean Cup MVP and gifted frontman Kadeem Corbin, attacking midfielders Levi Garcia and Kishun Seecharan, holding midfielder Neveal Hackshaw and versatile defender Jesus Perez all had trials in Europe since while defender Maurice Ford and winger Akeem Garcia played regularly in the local Pro League for defending champion DIRECTV W Connection. The 17-year-old Garcia (L), who is a Form Five student at Shiva Boys Hindu College, is believed to be close to a European move.

These players will be joined in Jamaica by a United States-based quartet of university students in: Brendon Creed (Temple University), Leland Archer (College of Charleston), Duane Muckette (University of South Florida) and Ricardo John (Virginia Tech).

Houston Dynamo Juniors custodian Johan Welch, who was first choice for the young Warriors during the Caribbean qualifying stage, completes King’s tally of five US-based players.

“These player such as Muckette, Creed and John will definitely add some quality to what we already have,” said King, “with the likes of Corbin, Levi Garcia and the other boys who did exceptionally well for us in the Caribbean Championship.”

Creed, Archer and Welch have all graduated from the national under-17 team while Muckette, who was installed as vice-captain of the current squad, was a starter on the national under-20 squad in 2012, which crashed out in the first qualifying phase.

The rest of King’s under-20 squad includes: captain Shannon Gomez, Martieon Watson, Jabari Mitchell, Aikim Andrews (all W Connection), Javon Sample, Kevon Goddard (both Central FC),  Akeem Humphrey (Club Sando) and Matthew Woo Ling (St Anthony’s College).

North East Stars’ holding midfielder Keon Joseph and Naparima College striker Nicholas Dillon failed to keep their spots from the Caribbean qualifiers while others like Defence Force winger Akeem Roach, who missed several sessions due to illness, did not do enough to force their way in.

Roach was among the scorers on Saturday when the young Warriors whipped Caledonia AIA 5-1 in a practice match. Corbin, who is a Pro League player with St Ann’s Rangers, scored twice against Caledonia while Woo Ling got one goal from the penalty spot.

Last week, King told Wired868 he would try to stuff his team with utility players for the gruelling tournament that comprises of five group matches in 12 days, which is contrary to the FIFA bylaw for the welfare of players.

“We need players who can play in more than one position,” said King. “The 20 we select will more or less be players who can play in more than one position so it gives us an opportunity to rotate.”

The national under-20 team has not played a single international practice game since they got together as they made do with match-ups against local Pro League and Super League clubs. In contrast, the United States and Canada both had European tours with games against the likes of England and Russia while teams like Jamaica and Panama recently finished invitational international tournaments.

The young Warriors were forced to cancel a trip to Mexico due to financial issues while they also delayed their proposed Fort Lauderdale tour, which was initially supposed to begin on Saturday.

At present, the national under-20 team does not have US visas.

“We are waiting for an Embassy appointment for either Monday evening or Tuesday morning,” said King.

It would have cost an estimated TT$17,000 for visas for the squad and the Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA), by its own record, banked TT$1.6 million from the senior women team’s FIFA Play Off contest against Ecuador on December 2.

However, TTFA official William Wallace said he delayed the acquisition of visas due to uncertainty over the funding of the trip to Fort Lauderdale.

“I put a hold on the visa (applications) when I heard the funding was a trouble because that is about $17,000,” said Wallace. “There was a definite ‘no’ from the PS on Monday who said that there were no funds. So we were then hoping to train here and travel to Jamaica directly and we wouldn’t need visas for that.

“So I put a hold on it until I was sure about the funding. Not knowing put a spoke in our planning.”

Unfortunately it meant that, when the SPORTT Company did agree to fund the young Warriors last Tuesday evening, the players did not have the necessary travel documents to immediately proceed to their pre-CONCACAF camp.

At present, the under-20 squad is due to depart for Florida on Thursday January 1. The Warriors will then play matches against undisclosed teams on January 3 and 5 before heading for Jamaica on January 7. King hopes that at least one of those matches will be against the Canada under-20 team.

The team’s camp in Fort Lauderdale is fully funded by TSTT.

Trinidad and Tobago is grouped with hosts Jamaica, Aruba, Panama, Guatemala and the United States at CONCACAF level. The group winner will qualify automatically for the Under-20 World Cup while the second and third placed teams will enter a play off.

(Trinidad and Tobago national under-20 team)

Goalkeepers: Johan Welch (Houston Dynamo Juniors), Javon Sample (Central FC);

Defenders: Shannon Gomez, Martieon Watson, Maurice Ford (all W Connection), Brendon Creed (Temple University), Leland Archer (College of Charleston), Jesus Perez (North East Stars);

Attacking Midfielders: Aikim Andrews, Akeem Garcia, Jabari Mitchell (all W Connection), Duane Muckette (University of South Florida), Levi Garcia (Shiva Boys HC), Kishun Seecharan (Club Sando);

Forwards: Kadeem Corbin (St Ann’s Rangers), Ricardo John (Virginia Tech).

Carry de team Tobago..stay in some guest houses , camp on de beach ..run rong de island..chat wid Bertille..drink some fish brof..and train hard..No money fuh dem...
You have to wonder, why no one ever thought of that, easier, cheaper and stress free. ???

Are they playing against regional teams on their visit to Florida? I have seen previous TT teams do it before. Vranes brought a Shell cup team to Virginia beach to play the U.S. B team, before flying to JA for Shell finals. I think they won it that year. So it is not a far fetched idea. But seeing the confusion to get funds for tours, I can see why some people will question this move.

U-20 MNT Prepares for Pre-Qualifying Training Camp in Florida

CHICAGO (Dec. 27, 2014) – U.S. Under-20 Men’s National Team head coach Tab Ramos has submitted its 35-player provisional roster for the 2015 CONCACAF U-20 Championship and has gathered a group of players for one final camp before heading to Jamaica for the qualifying tournament.

The final camp will take place in Sunrise, Florida, located near Fort Lauderdale, and begins on Sunday, Dec. 28. Ramos will name the final 20-player roster on Friday, Jan. 2.

While there are 21 players in the final camp, all 35 players are available for selection to the final roster.

“I am looking forward to our last camp leading into U-20 World Cup qualifying, and there will be some very difficult selections in what we think is a very competitive, deep and united pool of players,” said Ramos. “They have performed well together over the past 18 months.”

The final camp, which will last until Monday, Jan. 5, when the U.S. leaves for Jamaica, will also set the groundwork for the team’s opening match for U-20 World Cup Qualifying against Guatemala on Friday, Jan. 9, at Independence Park in Kingston.

That match will be followed by Group A games against Panama (Jan. 11) and Aruba (Jan. 14) in Kingston, followed by games against host Jamaica (Jan. 18) and Trinidad & Tobago (Jan. 21) at the Montego Bay Sports Complex. The tournament will qualify four teams to the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup.

The CONCACAF U-20 Championship format has changed for 2015 with two groups of six teams. Previous tournaments had featured four groups of three teams. Under the new setup, the first-place teams in Group A and Group B will automatically qualify for the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup and advance to face each other in the CONCACAF U-20 Championship Final. The second- and third-place teams in each group (four teams) will be reseeded based on group-stage results. In this playoff stage, the top seed will play the No. 4 seed and the second seed will face the No. 3 seed. The two winners from these respective games will also qualify for the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup.

This year marks the 25th occasion in which the U.S. U-20 MNT is competing in the CONCACAF Youth Tournament or Championship. The USA has earned second place in the qualification tournament six times (1980, 1982, 1986, 1992, 2009, 2013), but has yet to win a CONCACAF U-20 Championship title.

Brent Sam's attitude has been mentioned before, I imagine it's a similar case this time too.

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad & Tobago – The Trinidad & Tobago under-20 national team will convene for a training camp in Florida on January 1 as it prepares for the 2015 CONCACAF Under-20 Championship.

Based at the Shula’s Hotel and Resort in Miami Lakes, the 20-man squad will practice at St. Thomas University.

Head coach Derek King, who led the squad to a 3-0 win over Haiti in the final of the Caribbean Under-20 Championship earlier this year, is looking forward to completing preparations for the confederation competition, which will be played in Jamaica, January 9-24.

“This camp is a much welcomed one for the team,” King told TTFA Media on Wednesday.  “It’s an excellent opportunity for us to be together as a team in a camp environment before our first match in the tournament.”

Linking up with the selection will be United States-based players defender Leland Archer (College of Charleston), midfielders Duane Muckette (University of South Florida) and Brendon Creed (Temple University) and forward Ricardo John (Virginia Tech University).

“These player such as Muckette, Creed and John will definitely add some quality to what we already have with the likes of Corbin, Levi Garcia and the other boys who did exceptionally well for us in the Caribbean Championship,” King continued.  “The sessions this week were of a good quality with a lot of intensity and it’s a good sign of us.  “We intend to carry this straight into the Miami camp and the tournament in Jamaica.”

The junior Soca Warriors open the tournament against host Jamaica in Kingston on January 9.

All the players were granted their US Visas with only the team trainer Sharon Joseph being denied.
