News - 19.06.2014
Press Conference : Announcement Athletes

A very strong field and several head-to-head races at Athletissima 2014

A total of 17 Olympic and world champions will be part of the line-up of the 39th edition of the IAAF Diamond League event Athletissima, at the Pontaise Stadium on July 3. Both the track and the field events will offer a great show in all the corners of the stadium.

The high jump has been one of the most exciting events this year so far, both because of the many excellent jumpers and the various winners. Athletissima will gather the dominators of this season Bohdan Bondarenko (2.42 m), Moutaz Essa Barshim (2.42 m), Ivan Ukhov (2.41 m) and Derek Drouin (2.40 m). A first, as Lausanne has never gathered so many high level jumpers in one single event.

In the pole vault, the new world record holder Renaud Lavillenie will aim at winning his fourth Diamond League event of the year. In the women’s shotput, Valérie Adams will try to add a 51st victory to her incredible strike of 50 back-to-back victories. In the long jump, Greg Rutherford, reigning Olympic champion and leader of the world ranking this year (8.51m), will need to bring his A-game in order to win against the podium of the last world championships Aleksandr Menkov, Ignisious Geisah and Luis Rivera Morales. The women’s javelin throw will feature the 3 best performers of the year, Barbora Spotakova, Linda Stahl and Kimberley Mickle. Piotr Malachowski (discus throw) and Caterine Ibarguen (triple jump), both topping the world rankings of their event, will be the favourites of their events.

As for the races, they will offer several fantastic head-to-head races. Justin Gatlin, undefeated this year so far, will try to retain his invincibility in the 100m against Tyson Gay and Jimmy Vicaut. In the 200m, Yohan Blake will be up against fellow Jamaican Nickel Ashmeade and Frenchman Christophe Lemaitre. The 400m will be a very fast event, with Kirani James and LaShawn Merritt facing each other for the second time this year. Last time, both clocked sub 44 second times, and James was just a few thousandths of a second fast the Merritt. In the 1500m, Rome winner Silas Kiplagat will face Olympic champion Taoufik Makhloufi. In the 3000m steeple, Brimin Kiprop Kipruto and Paul Kipsiele Koech will fight for the victory.

The hurdle races will be just as exciting, as they will feature the two world best performers of the year Pascal Martinot-Lagarde and Hansle Parchment in the 110m h, and Javier Culson and Michael Tinsley in the 400m h.

As for world lead holder Veronica Campbell-Brown, she will try to win the 100m event for the first time in Lausanne. Kenyan athlete and reigning world champion Eunice Jepkoech Sum will have a similar objective in the 800m. In the 3000m, Genzebe Dibaba, who beat 3 indoor world records this year (1500 – 3000 – 2 miles) will offer a fantastic show.

The Athletissima main programme has never featured as many Swiss athletes as this year. This is mostly due to the Swiss athletes’ aim to chase a qualification spot for the European Championships in Zurich in August. They will be led by Kariem Hussein (400m h), Selina Büchel (800 m) and Mujinga Kambundji, who has just beat the 100m Swiss record. Other Swiss athletes are entered in the sprint races, long jump, pole vault and women’s 4 x 100m relay.

Doping Troubled Tyson Gay added to Lausanne Diamond League 100m Field
Wednesday, 25 June 2014 (Watchathletics.com)

American sprinter Tyson Gay, who was banned for only one year after testing positive for banned anabolic steroid will be under lots of pressure as he will run his first race in the 100m at the Lausanne Diamond League event on 3 July.

"There's still a lot of pressure on him coming back," "It's not just on you as a person but on your family, your friends and your associates. You've got to live in a different comfort zone now." Justin Gatlin told BBC, who is also entered in the meet.

Tyson Gay tested positive last year on June at the USA national championships.

The 32-year-old is fresh from victory at the Jamaican Championships over 100m, running 10.96, the sixth fastest time of 2014. She now has the two of the top ten fastest times of the year 10.86 done in Florida last month and 10.96 at the Jamaica Trials last weekend.

"With much disappointment, I regrettably withdrew from @athletissima Lausanne due to a sore hamstring. I will return to the track soon," VCB tweeted on Wednesday.

Campbell-Brown's tweet were followed by two from her On Track Management account "VCB will not compete tomorrow at #athletissimaLausanne due to discomfort in her hamstring. Thanks to all for the support!"

"VCB is out of Lausanne due to minor setback. Thanks to the meet organizers and fans for understanding," the second tweet read.

One US athlete remarked that we had a very fast track in T&T but we tend to believe that fast times are faulty. keep doing it guys ...the olympic silver medallist running below 10 is no surprise to me though.

Not condoning the criticism of the T&T clock, but Gatling has been running his times consistently and at the most reputable meets the circuit has to offer.

Congrats to Stargirl-Lee Ahye, she is now 2nd in the 100m DL points table and will hopefully get more DL Meet invites so she can compete for the big Diamond prize this season!

Some observations

In that race with a better start MLA could have ran even quicker so hopefully if she can improve on her starts she will be very hard to beat this season by both the Jamaicans and the Americans.
That 10.98 is MLA's 3rd legal sub-11 of the season which means that she is definitely now one of the top female sprinters in the world this year.
Lets hope she can keep her form and remain injury free straight into the upcoming Commonwealth Games and hopefully she will bring home an individual 100m medal for T&T.

On a related note KAB will not have it easy to regain her no.1 T&T sprinter spot when she comes back later this season or next season. It would be nice if the NAAA can make an official announcement to the fans so we will know how long we have to wait for Kelly-Ann's return.
We already know that Hackett will be back next year but still have no official word on Kelly-Ann's return.

Gatlin made a statement with that 9.80 run which means that Richard Thompson's 9.82 WL was only able to move him from the top of this season's top Men 100m sprint list for two weeks.

Also a very impressive season opener from Tyson Gay of 9.93. With 3 or four races under Tyson' belt he will probably be in the shape to beat Gatlin in about 4 to 6 weeks from now.

Would have been nice to see RT in that line up but I suspect he would have found it difficult to beat Gatlin unless he is in the shape of his life and is ready to improve on his PB of 9.82 and dip into the legal mid 9.7x time category.

Will be interesting to see how RT performs in Paris this coming Saturday.

Here is a better quality and longer race video:

Richard's race on saturday is big. He will be facing Nickel Ashmeade who is the only man I see as a formidable challenger for CWG gold. Beating him will provide a mental boost going into the games.

Ahye wins Diamond League 100m in photo finish
Published: Friday, July 4, 2014 (T&T Guardian)

T&T world leading international sprinter Michelle-Lee Ahye clocked 10.98 seconds, the same as Ivory Coast’s Murielle Ahoure, but won the women’s 100m dash in a photo-finish when IAAF Diamond League continued in Lausanne, Switzerland, yesterday.

Ahye, who ran the fastest time of the year (10.85) at the T&T National Championships in Port-of-Spain, last month, took her Diamond League points tally to four to sit second in the rankings. Ahoure’s time was her season best. In third was USA’s English Gardener, who clocked 11.19 seconds.

Meanwhile, Cleopatra Borel, took a fourth-place finish in the women’s shot put. Borel tossed the iron ball 18.88m on her first attempt. Runaway leader Valerie Adams of New Zealand placed first with a 20.42m attempt.

Later, Jehue Gordon was in action in the men’s 400m hurdles and took sixth after running a season-best 49.29m. The race was won by Puerto Rico’s Javier Culson in 48.32 the Diamond League leader, just ahead of USA’s Michael Tinsley, who ran a season-best 48.40 seconds. South Africa’s Cornel Fredericks (49.00) finished third.

T&T’s other representative on the day was Lalonde Gordon, who struggled with an eighth-place finish in 48.38 seconds. The race was won easily by Olympic gold medalist Kirani James, who rewrote his personal record, Grenada’s national record and the Diamond League record with a blistering 43.74 finish. James held the world leading time (43.97) heading into the event, before set a new one. Had James not participated, USA’s Lashawn Merritt may have written the new world leading time. He finished second with a season-best 43.92 and remains the runaway Diamond League table leader with 14 points. Saudi Arabia’s Youssef Ahmed Masrahi placed third with an area-record-breaking time of 44.43 second. Chris Brown of the Bahamas placed fourth in 44.59- also a season best.

The men’s 100m final was dominated by Americans. Justin Gatlin erased T&T’s Richard Thompson’s (9.82) world leading time to win the race comfortably in 9.80 seconds. Tyson Gay was second in 9.93, while Michael Rodgers, was third on the all-American podium with a season best 9.98 seconds.

Kim Collins (10.13) of St Kitts and Nevis and Jamaica’s Kemar Bailey-Cole (10.14) placed fourth and fifth, respectively.

GOLDEN DEBUT
Ahye wins at first Diamond League meet

By Kwame Laurence kwame.laurence@trinidadexpress.com
Story Created: Jul 3, 2014 at 8:40 PM ECT (T&T Express)

Michelle-Lee Ahye struck gold on her IAAF Diamond League debut, in Lausanne, Switzerland, yesterday. The Trinidad and Tobago sprinter topped the Athletissima women’s 100 metres field in an impressive 10.98 seconds.

Running into a 0.3 metres per second headwind, Ahye recovered from an ordinary start to just get the better of Murielle Ahoure, the Ivory Coast athlete also clocking 10.98 to pick up silver. American English Gardner was a distant third in 11.19, while Nigerian Blessing Okagbare was a non-finisher.

“Tonight I felt really good and very pleased to have won my first Diamond League event,” said Ahye, in an interview on the IAAF website (www.iaaf.org). “The time was good and I’m happy to go under 11 seconds. I know that if I can get the first 20-30 metres right, I can run a good race.”

Two Saturdays ago, at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain, Ahye captured the NGC/Sagicor National Open Track & Field Championship women’s 100m title with a 10.88 seconds bolt. The 22-year-old athlete was even faster in the semi-final round, winning her heat in a personal best and world-leading 10.85.
Yesterday, in Lausanne, Ahye proved that her sub-11 form at Nationals was no fluke.

T&T’s Cleopatra Borel finished fourth in the Athletissima women’s shot put with an 18.88 metres throw.
New Zealand’s Olympic and world champion Valerie Adams threw the iron ball 20.42m for an easy victory, beating Gong Lijiao (19.65m) of China and American Michelle Carter (19.38m) into second and third, respectively.

Reigning world champion Jehue Gordon was sixth in the men’s 400m hurdles, the T&T athlete getting home in 49.29 seconds.

Puerto Rico’s Javier Culson (48.32), American Michael Tinsley (48.40) and South Africa’s Cornel Fredericks (49.00) earned gold, silver and bronze, respectively, while fourth spot went to Dominican Republic’s two-time Olympic gold medallist Felix Sanchez (49.08).

T&T’s Lalonde Gordon clocked 48.38 seconds for eighth spot in the men’s 400m. Olympic champion Kirani James was on fire in the one-lap race, the Grenadian stopping the clock at a personal best 43.74 to grab gold, ahead of world champion LaShawn Merritt (43.92) of the United States, Saudi Arabia’s Youssef Al-Masrahi (44.43) and Bahamian veteran Chris Brown (44.59).

Gay loses out to Gatlin on return
Story Created: Jul 3, 2014 at 8:40 PM ECT (T&T Express)

LAUSANNE

Former world 100 metres champion Tyson Gay finished second behind fellow American Justin Gatlin on his return to competition after a one-year doping ban at the Lausanne Diamond League meeting yesterday.

Gatlin, the 2004 Athens Olympics gold medallist who was later banned for four years for doping, clocked a season’s best 9.80 seconds while Gay clocked 9.93. American champion Mike Rodgers, who has also served a drugs suspension, was third in 9.98.

Gay was cleared to compete in the Swiss lakeside city after the international federation decided it would not contest the United States Anti-Doping Agency’s decision to halve his ban. The 2007 world gold medallist tested positive for a steroid at last year’s US championships.

“I’m happy to be back on the circuit, I didn’t miss a beat,” Gay told reporters.

Ahye golden in Lausanne 100m
Friday, July 4 2014 (T&T Newsday)

TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO women 100 metres champions and world leader over the distance, Michelle Lee-Ahye was in winner’s row at the IAAF Golden League meet at Lausanne, Switzerland, yesterday.

Ahye won in a time of 10.98 seconds beating Murielle Ahoure of the Ivory Coast who was afforded the same time of 10.98. English Gardner of the USA was third in a time of 11.19 seconds.

Another Trinidad and Tobago athlete, world 400 metres hurdles champion Jehue Gordon was sixth in the event in a time of 49.38 seconds.

National men 200 metres champion Lalonde Gordon produced a time of 48.38 seconds to finish eighth in the men 400m.

Grenadian Kirani James ran a world leading time of 43.74 to win the men 400m ahead of American Leshawn Merritt in his seasons best 43.92 seconds.

In the men 100m, American Justin Gatlin is the new world leader after winning in a time of 9.80 seconds ahead of fellow Americans Tyson Gay (9.93) who is coming off a one-year suspension after failing a drug test in 2012 at the US Olympic Trials and Micheal Rodgers (9.98).

Richard Thompson is expected to run the men 100m at the Areva Diamond League meet tomorrow.

He will return to Europe after two wins earlier in June, in Hengelo and Oslo.

Thompson will face Jamaicans Nesta Carter, Nickel Ashmeade and Kemar Bailey-Cole among others.

James 43.74, Ahye 10.98 light up Lausanne DL
July 4th 8:09am (TrackAlerts.com)
