Commonwealth Games Thread - Other Sports
« on: July 29, 2014, 06:33:50 AM »
Our hockey teams and rugby team are getting their ass whipped. If these teams are not up to standard why did de TTOA send them? Did they have to go through a qualifying procedure? if so, de standard in de region is dirt poor. De word use in de press around de world for our women's hockey team losing to India 14 -0 was annihilate that's not good for a country's image.

The standard of field hockey in the English Caribbean has fallen. In TT the talent pool is stretched. A lot of talented players are going to TF and football because of potential scholarships. yes, there are scholarships in hockey but not as much as TF and football. Plus less females are NOT   encouraged to play sports as males. Plus most of the hockeys teams are west of the Dry River. and one or 2 in South(correct me on that). Also apart from UWI and SAGS, I don't know of any other teams in the east. The National Hockey Center has been in Tacarigua(East) for over 10 years. Not one formation of a team. Netball has suffered the same fate also.

And as far as the country's image. Don't even worry about that. There are more important things than losing 14-0 in a hockey game. The Association will think twice next time. Either prepare the team or do not send one.

How are our swimmers performing?  Keep in mind this is a global tournament that does not include American and Chinese swimmers so it's really less competition for our swimmers

Trinidad and Tobago defeats Malaysia in Hockey

http://www.thestar.com.my/Sport/Hockey/2014/07/29/Trinidad-beat-worldclass-Malaysia-in-hockey/

Good win for the T&T team. Especially since a team ranked higher than T&T. This part of the article stood out the most to me. Our teams need to play more against World class teams before entering these competitions

Quote
Trinidad skipper Cowie Darren acknowledged that “we hardly get to play against world-class teams”.  “We came into the Glasgow Games to gain experience for next year’s Pan American Games … so it’s a huge boost for us to win our first-ever match in the Commonwealth Games,” said Darren.

 :beermug: :beermug:

That guarantees him a bronze medal.

I think Aaron Prince is one win away from the semis as well.

Vijender won the Gold Medal at the last C'wealth Games. So no shame there.

Coolie Power.  ;D

The medal table is showing two braze for T&T One each for Ayanna Alexander and Lalonde Gordon. So does this mean boxer Michael Alexander has to fight the other semi final loser to earn a bronze medal? I am confused because the T&T media reported that he secured his bronze medal. Doesn't he have to fight the other semi final loser to win the bronze?

he has secured AT LEAST a bronze. It could be also Gold or Silver so de medal table can't sure dat as yet until the events are completed.

So my question again is how is one guaranteed a medal from winning a quarterfinal bout? There are four fighters total from two semi finals. If he lose his semi he still has to fight again for the bronze. What is secured?

in boxing BOTH semi finalist losers get bronze. They don't fight for 3rd place. In other words boxing has  FOUR medalist (2 bronze,1 silver and 1 gold))

Correct. Thus even if Alexander loses he has secured minimum a bronze medal. They have not put down that medal for TT yet, because if he wins, then it's at least a Silver. Once his competition is over and they know the final colour it will be stated.

There was a time when the TT Netball team was badass for decades. But something happened in the 90s we just started to recede. Sad - this team used to be the one source of constant pride when I was a yute.
