Honduras to Host CONCACAF Under-17 Championship in 2015

MIAMI (Tuesday, July 29, 2014) – The Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) today announced that Honduras will host next year’s CONCACAF Under-17 Championship, scheduled to kick off in February.

Two stadiums in San Pedro Sula will be the sites for the CONCACAF Under-17 Championship Honduras 2015, to be played from February 27 – March 14. Group stage games will be played in both the Estadio Olímpico and Estadio General Francisco Morazán, with the final rounds to be contested at the Estadio Olimpico, culminating with the final on March 14.

Honduras will welcome the region’s top youth teams back to Central America, following a successful 2013 Under-17 Championship disputed in Panama. The tournament will crown the Confederation champion at this age level, and qualify four teams to the FIFA Under-17 World Cup Chile 2015.

“CONCACAF has produced some world class youth sides throughout the years, with Mexico’s under-17s lifting the World Cup twice in recent years,” said CONCACAF President Jeffrey Webb. “We’re looking forward to seeing the next champions emerge from next year’s competition in Honduras – a country passionate about its football. I’m sure this will be a great Under-17 Championship.”

The 2015 CONCACAF Under-17 Championship will include a field of twelve teams: five from the Caribbean Football Union (CFU), four from the Central American Football Union (UNCAF), and three from North America. Qualifying in the Caribbean is currently underway, while qualifying in Central America will take place in coming months.

This year, a new format favoring development and competition will be introduced to the Under-17 Championship. The twelve qualifying teams will be divided into two groups of six, to play a round-robin format on the first five match days. The resulting top team from each group will earn a direct berth to the FIFA Under-17 World Cup, and a place in the championship match on the final day.

The second- and third-place teams from each group will be re-seeded into a four-team table, based on points obtained during group play. The top team from that table will play the fourth-ranked team, and the second-ranked team will face off against the third-ranked nation in a pair of one-off matches, with the winners of each of those two final-day games securing one of the two remaining tickets on offer to the FIFA Under-17 World Cup.

As with the recently announced CONCACAF Under-20 Championship Jamaica 2015, to be played in January, the new Under-17 Championship structure emphasizes youth development by assuring all twelve competing teams multiple high-level, competitive matches. During the CONCACAF Under-17 Championship Honduras 2015, eleven match days will feature triple-header action, with 33 total games set to be contested among the finalists.

A date for the official draw will be announced in coming weeks.

Mexico is the defending CONCACAF under-17 champion, having claimed the title in Panama in 2013. Mexico won the FIFA Under-17 World Cup in 2011, and was runner-up in 2013.

2015 CONCACAF Under-17 Championship
Dates:        February 27 – March 14, 2015

Location:   San Pedro Sula, Honduras

Stadiums: Estadio Olímpico and Estadio General Francisco Morazán

Participating Teams: 12
Caribbean Football Union: 5 Teams
North America: 3 Teams
Central American Football Union: 4 Teams

Number of teams qualifying to the FIFA World Cup: 4

Format: The twelve (12) teams shall be divided into a group stage consisting of two (2) groups (A, B) of six (6) teams each. The group winners qualify automatically for the FIFA U-17 World Cup Chile 2015. The second- and third-place teams from each group are re-seeded by group stage results, with the top team of the four facing the fourth-best team, and the second-best finisher facing the third-best. The winner of each of those two matches also advances to the FIFA U-17 World Cup Chile 2015.

U.S. U-17 MNT Head Coach Richie Williams Names Rosters for Nordic Tournament and Copa Mexico

CHICAGO (July 22, 2014) – U.S. Under-17 Men’s National Team head coach Richie Williams has named two rosters for the upcoming Open Nordic Tournament starting July 28 in Kolding, Denmark, and the third Copa Mexico de Naciones, which kicks off Aug. 2 in Mexico City.

An 18-player group will represent the United States in Denmark, with the tournament kicking off July 28 against host Denmark. A 20-player roster has been named for the third Copa Mexico de Naciones, with the USA opening against China PR on Aug. 2.

The tournaments overlap, but there are four players who have been rostered for both tournaments: goalkeeper William Pulisic, defender Edwin Lara and forwards McKinze Gaines and Elijah Rice.

The USA’s U-17 pool has had an unbeaten 2014 in international competition with a 7-0-2 record. The U-17s went 3-0-1 and defeated Turkey 2-1 in the Aegean Cup championship in January. In early April, the USA defeated Bosnia 4-1 in the Katalinski Memorial Tournament title match in Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina, to cap off a 2-0-1 performance at the event. The U.S. U-17 MNT then posted back-to-back wins against Croatia on April 8 and 10.

Among the combined 34 players involved in this two-tournament stretch, there are 23 who are currently registered with Development Academy clubs.

Two players advanced to the recently-completed 2013-14 Development Academy Championships. On the USA’s Nordic roster, defender Miles Stray was on Real Salt Lake AZ’s U-15/16 national runner-up team. Rice, who is on both U.S. U-17 MNT rosters, had a goal and two assists to lead Chicago Magic PSG’s U-15/16s in their third-place victory against Strikers FC.

The two rosters are mostly composed of players born in 1998, with the exception of defender Tyler Adams, midfielder Jonathan Gonzalez, defender Lara and goalkeeper Eric Lopez who were born in 1999.

U.S. U-17 MNT’s Open Nordic Tournament Schedule:
Monday, July 28: USA vs. Denmark
Tuesday, July 29: USA vs. Norway
Thursday, July 31: USA vs. Faroe Islands
Saturday, Aug. 2: Placement match

U.S. U-17 MNT’s Copa Mexico de Naciones Schedule:
Saturday, Aug. 2: USA vs. China PR
Sunday, Aug. 3: USA vs. Argentina
Monday, Aug. 4: USA vs. Paraguay
Wednesday, Aug. 6: TBD
Friday, Aug. 8: TBD
Sunday, Aug. 10: Placement match

Looking forward to see how the young warriors play. The youths from this team will make up most of the senior team qualifying roster for 2022, so I am curious to see the talent and how well they play as a team

TTFA needs a Life Support infusion of cash. Just think if the government could ever recoup the millions of misappropriated funds  we could be ahead- how does Haiti do it ? One of the poorest countries out dey and Jamaica doing it?
Next source of lost funding- FIFA - doesn't FIFA allocate development funds to countries? Think again if all the funds that were allegedly steered away from our coffers could ever be recouped we may again be ahead-

Does business have a role ? Probably but more importantly our ministry of sports and tourism ought to collaborate to support our programs as the potential spin off from a national brand of our country could be immense.

We should not worry about Haiti or JA. They are doing what it takes to get their teams ready. We may be "richer" than them, but is who want to put money in sports. Like I said before, those people with money do not have football in mind until the team rise from the ashes. They are not prepared to do the grass roots development. Maybe those with money want a substantial say in the running of football. That is up to the TTFA.

And anotherthing,  don't fool yourself to think that there are not very wealthy JA and Haitians. You would be surprised.

The USSF does manage their money "properly" so businesses have no problem working with them. It is not our fault that businesses do not trust the TTFA.

Our responsibility is to support the team, not the federation directly. We demand a U17 team, that's our job.

Moral support is all fine and well. The teams need financial support. That means we have to support or not support TTFA.

Cooper’s U-17s head to St Lucia.
By Ian Prescott (Express).

No training camp but...

“It is the first time in my six or seven years preparing national teams that we didn’t have a camp before a tournament,” national Under-17 men’s head coach Shawn Cooper declared yesterday.

“It is not  ideal conditions, but we are working within the constraints which the Association (TTFA) are under. We are making the best of the situation,” he said.

It is no secret that the cash-strapped Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) is struggling with funding issues. Recently affected have been the senior and women’s Under-15 teams and now, Cooper’s Under-17 footballers.

The team leaves tomorrow for St Lucia, seeking a spot in the final round of the CFU Under-17 championship carded for Haiti in September. It is a path to the Concacaf final zone of World Cup qualifying.

The young Soca Warriors play  St Lucia, Grenada and Curacao  between August 20 and 24 at the Beausejour Cricket Ground, looking for top spot in the group.

“We are trying to work within our constraints because of the lack of resources we have,” Cooper added.

Cooper begins with a new squad, his former bunch having gone onto Under-20 level. His main concern is that most of his current players are new to international football and would not have also built the type of camaraderie which being in a camp develops.

“It’s the first time they are in a competitive environment, so we are cautiously looking to see how  our squad will perform,” Cooper said. “We are behind (other teams) because the other Concacaf teams which we hoping to qualify against have already been exposed to a lot of international matches.”

Cooper thinks his team has raw talent and is captained by W Connection’s Kareem Riley. It also includes Anthony Herbert, a top-scorer in the Youth Pro League.

Cooper is also excited by former primary school star John Rochford, the younger brother of former youth World Cup midfielder Jean-Luc Rochford. The team also has two young goalkeepers from Naparima College, who Cooper hopes will grow as the tournament progresses.

Not happy with the preparation of this team but I wish our team the best. Like I said earlier I look forward to seeing the talent on display, as well as how they play together as a team (yes even at this level). Remember these youths will make up most of our team for the 2022 World Cup campaign.

There needs to be investment in drainage management ... too much water on that field.

This team missed out on a top quality player based in the US.

Asylum, you hah to be "mad", for you to come to that conclusion. TTFA should have invested in a turf-field for this kind of weather. Ooops! I forget. They have the COE.

U-17 Warriors aim to hurdle obstacles on W/Cup journey
By Lasana Liburd (Wired868)

The Trinidad and Tobago national under-17 football team was brimming with confidence today, despite the shortcomings of the squad’s preparation, as the young “Soca Warriors” set off for the first qualifying phase of its Chile 2015 Under-17 World Cup.

“We’re going there with every intention of topping the group and moving on to the next phase,” said head coach Shawn Cooper, via a press release. “This is a good bunch with a lot of hunger to qualify and represent their country with distinction.

“We may not have had the best line up of warm-up matches but we got in some decent sessions and a couple games against local pro teams, which I think put us in a good shape for the tournament.”

Last year, Cooper guided the previous under-17 squad to the quarterfinal round of the CONCACAF competition before the Warriors bowed out to host team, Panama.

The manner of the team’s departure today was revealing of the issues that continue to plague Trinidad and Tobago’s national squads.

The players left in two groups for St Lucia—at 7 am and 1 pm—and without national gear.

The “Soca Warriors” are sponsored by Joma but the outfits provided to the team had no logos. It is a recurring theme for Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) squads at the moment.

There are, of course, more serious issues.

An unfortunate medical emergency denied the squad of the services of assistant coach Ross Russell and whittled the already undermanned technical staff down to just five persons: Cooper (head coach), Christopher Gouveia (manager), Gilbert Bateau (trainer), Ian Dore (therapist) and Devin Elcock (equipment manager).

Bateau doubles up as assistant coach while Dore will also act as goalkeeper coach and, presumably, Elcock will assist Gouveia with managerial duties when necessary. None of the technical staff members once received the agreed upon monthly stipend of $3,000 for their time and expertise while the players practised without adequate refreshments or training kits

This is the introduction to international football for Trinidad and Tobago’s 20 best players under the age of 17.

Regardless, this is the time when the teenaged men and their adult mentors must put the inadequacies of their preparation aside and do whatever is necessary to bring pride to the “red, black and white.”

Right back Matthaeus Granger, who is a St Ann’s Rangers player, told Wired868 that he was confident the squad will make Trinidad and Tobago proud.

“We have a good team and we are going to surprise people,” said the 16-year-old Granger. “We are going there to win.”

Trinidad and Tobago faces Grenada in its opening Caribbean Football Union (CFU) fixture on Wednesday at the Beausejour Stadium while the young Warriors will tackle Curacao on August 22 and host St Lucia on August 24.

Grenada, Curacao and St Lucia all participated in the inaugural 2013 CONCACAF Under-15 competition, which Trinidad and Tobago forfeited due to a lack of funding. Curacao eliminated the Warriors at under-20 level in 2012 and Cooper’s men have a chance for revenge.

Only the group winners are assured of advancing to the next stage while the two best runner-ups from all five Caribbean qualifying groups will join them.

The Trinidad and Tobago squad is captained by DIRECTV W Connection midfielder Kareem Riley who is one of nine Connection players in the national youth team.

San Juan Jabloteh and St Ann’s Rangers are also very well represented with five and four players respectively within Cooper’s ranks while FC Santa Rosa and Point Fortin Civic contributed one pick each.

Connection might have easily had 10 players in the travelling squad. Cooper explained that teenaged attacker Isaiah Hudson was declared unavailable and there was the suggestion that the left-sided attacker was about to go on trial.

Connection president David John Williams confirmed that he asked for Hudson to be excused from the international tournament but declined to give a reason.

“We asked for Isaiah to be excused from this round of the tournament,” said Williams. “I would rather not say why right now. But he is not on trial or going on any trial.”

Trinidad and Tobago Under-17 squad:

Goalkeepers: Enrique Changiah (W Connection), Levi Fernandez (Point Fortin Civic);

Defenders: Isaiah Garcia, Kierron Mason, Shirwin Noel, Keston Julien (all W Connection), Matthaeus Granger, Tekay Hoyce, Travell Edwards (all St Ann’s Rangers), Kendell Charles (San Juan Jabloteh);

Forwards: Dereem Daniel, Jeankeon Alexander (both San Juan Jabloteh), Anthony Herbert (W Connection).

Technical staff:

Shawn Cooper (head coach), Christopher Gouveia (manager), Gilbert Bateau (trainer), Ian Dore (therapist), Devin Elcock (equipment manager).
