Brent Calloway, performance director-International at EXOS

Athletes and sports enthusiasts will have the opportunity to be part of a discussion about the developments in performance training from an international sports performance coach this Monday and Tuesday.

Brent Calloway, performance director-International at EXOS, a company that provides specialist services in elite athlete training, will be in Trinidad imparting his knowledge about sport science.

On Monday, Calloway will host athlete workshops at the SporTT Elite Performance Unit at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Mucurapo and at the Movement Mechanics Performance Facility in Maraval. On Tuesday, he will be one of the featured speakers at the Agility Sports Launch, which will be held at the Ballroom of the Queen’s Park Oval, St Clair.

Calloway brings some 12 years of expertise in human performance, strength, speed and multi-directional ability and coaching elite athletes on the intricacies of human movement across a broad spectrum of sports.

Calloway is coming as the guest of Agility Sports Limited, a newly-established sporting goods company that will be introducing a new line of sports equipment. Through a professional partner network, Agility Sports will also offer a range of services — performance sport and athlete training, fitness, nutrition, physical therapy, and sport psychology.

A NEW CONCEPT in fitness and performance training, called Agility Sports, was launched on Tuesday evening at the Century Ballroom, Queen’s Park Oval, St Clair.

Agility Sports, which is based in Trinidad and Tobago, is the Caribbean hub for team sports and athletics.

According to its profile, “we provide premium brands, world class technology and training equipment for athletes of all ages and ability.

Many of our products come with access to training plans, video tutorials and on demand online training content.

“We also provide performance sport and athlete training, fitness, nutrition, physical therapy and sport psychology services through our professional partner network.

We have a special focus on the health and betterment of young athletes in communities throughout the Caribbean and we are aligned with organisations who share our uncompromising belief that everyone can achieve their dream of performing at the highest level of sport.”

The profile continued, “our people are committed to our core values of sportsmanship and teamwork, and to serving athletes with innovative products and a training experience unlike any other.”

The managing director of Agility Sports, Graham Leitch, stated at Tuesday’s launch, “we’ll ensure some of the work that we’re doing in the last few months with some of our partners and athletes, using skills equipment to also leverage our expertise in the area of sports performance and training.”

Also speaking at Tuesday’s event was former Trinidad and Tobago cricket team captain and ex-West Indies opening batsman Daren Ganga.

“We (the Daren Ganga Foundation) have already begun to collaborate with Agility Sports to identify the best range of equipment for use, both at the beginners’ level as well as the development and youth level of cricket,” he said.

LOCAL sportsmen and women from every discipline now have access to world class training equipment and performance development systems, following last week Tuesday’s launch of Agility Sports Limited at the Century Ballroom at the Queen’s Park Oval.

Agility Sports is a locally-owned company that has established a strategic alliance with EXOS, an organisation internationally- renowned for its athletic performance enhancement programmes.

Together, they have created network of trainers, nutritionists, physiotherapists, coaches and sports psychologists who will provide services to all levels of athletes and sports enthusiasts throughout Trinidad and Tobago.

Agility Sports are also agents for the SKLZ range of high performance training equipment.

Managing director Graham Leitch told guests at the launch, the partnership between SKLZ and EXOS was created to harness the abundant raw talent in Trinidad and Tobago and to provide all athletes with the best possible opportunity to realise their true potential.

Last week’s function attracted personalities from all disciplines within the sporting community, including West Indies allrounder Dwayne Bravo, former national footballer Stern John, para athlete swimmer Shanntol Ince, world champion 400 metres hurdler Jahue Gordon, Olympic sailor Andrew Lewis, national women’s football captain Maylee Attin-Johnson and many others.

Daren Ganga, a partner of Agility Sports said: “I am very much looking forward to working with Agility Sports and SKLZ now and in the future to adapt existing technology and create new technology for the sport of cricket.” Brent Callaway, EXOS performance director with 12 years experience in human performance, strength, speed and multi-directional ability, has coached elite athletes on the intricacies of human movement across a broad spectrum of sports, including baseball, football, track and field, tennis, boxing and soccer.

He has overseen all international performance staff for EXOS, some of whom were responsible for teams including the Los Angeles Galaxy, Everton Football Club, and the German, UK and the US national soccer teams.

In his presentation at the launch, Callaway, who has taught sport and performance coaches in the US, China, Mexico and Brazil, said achieving optimum performance required far more than simply going to the gym and running: “You can’t out-train poor nutrition.”

His message was well aligned with the Agility Sports philosophy. Leitch said “We will work tirelessly to achieve this success through our deep relationship with SKLZ and EXOS and our team of professionals.

“Our people are committed to our core values of sportsmanship and teamwork, and to serving athletes with innovative products and a training experience unlike any other.”

“Elite” in this context means that athlete or relay team is capable of making the final at a major world athletics event and can also be a strong medal contender.
Winning a medal at the last Olympics or World Championships also helps to qualify you as an "elite" athlete but it doesn't guarantee you to keep that status if you don't achieve the "elite standards" in the current outdoor athletics season.
