Man shot and killed, 4 others wounded near route of West Indian Day Parade

One of the shooting victims is wheeled on a stretcher by emergency personnel.
At least five people were shot, one fatally, near the route of Brooklyn’s West Indian Day Parade in a string of early morning shootings Monday.

A gunman opened fire into a crowd that had already begun parade festivities in Crown Heights about 3:30 a.m., police said, hitting three people and an unmarked police vehicle.

A 55-year-old man, shot in the midsection, died at the scene at the corner of Empire Blvd. and Rogers Ave. — about six blocks from the route of the parade that kicked off at 11 a.m.

A 22-year-old woman was shot in the ankle and a 22-year-old man was shot in the leg, cops said. Both were taken to Kings County Hospital in stable condition.

A round also shattered a window of an unmarked police vehicle, showering an NYPD detective inside with glass, officials said. He was treated and released from SUNY Downstate Medical Center.

An unmarked police car was also hit, with shattered glass injuring an NYPD detective.
A 26-year-old suspect was taken into custody in the fatal shooting and a firearm was recovered, cops said.

Police Commissioner William Bratton called the suspect a “career criminal” and said he was recently paroled. His name wasn’t immediately released.

Minutes later, a 28-year-old woman was shot in the butt on Utica Ave. near St. John’s Place, just two blocks from the parade’s Eastern Parkway route, officials said.

She was taken to Kings County Hospital with a non-life-threatening wound. There were no arrests in her shooting.

At least five people were shot in early morning gunfire Monday, with one man (not pictured) dying at the scene.
Just three blocks from the earlier fatal triple shooting, a 22-year-old man was shot in the foot near McKeever Place and Sullivan Place at 4:35 a.m., cops said. The victim, who was uncooperative with investigators, was taken to Kings County Hospital with a non-life-threatening wound. There were no immediate arrests.

The West Indian Day Parade, one of the city’s largest celebrations, has been marred by violence in past years.

Mayor Bill de Blasio  and family

Mayor Bill de Blasio defended the importance of the parade despite the violence and said the “vast majority have a wonderful time and only a few individuals get out of line.” He was joined at the parade by his wife, Chirlane McCray, who is of Caribbean decent, and their children, Dante and Chiara.

Multiple Shootings Precede Brooklyn's West Indian Parade
One Man Killed Hours Before Parade's Start in Brooklyn

A man was killed and at least four others hurt in a spate of gun violence in Brooklyn early Monday morning, police said.

The rash of gunfire happened near the route of the West Indian Day Parade, which was hours away from stepping off.

New York City Police Department officials couldn't say whether the violence was connected to the parade.

The violence began when a 55-year-old man was killed and two others were injured following a shooting on Empire Boulevard at 3:30 a.m., police said.

The alleged gunman, a 26-year-old man, became incensed following a dispute and shot into a crowd, killing the man whose name hasn't yet been released, NYPD officials said.

Two victims, a 22-year-old woman who had been shot in the ankle and a 22-year-old man who had been shot in the leg, were taken to Kings County Hospital where they were treated for their wounds, police said.

One of the bullets struck the window of an unmarked police van, shattering the glass but missing a detective seated inside, authorities said. The officer, who was injured by the shards of glass, was taken to SUNY Downstate Medical Center, where he was treated for his wounds and released, police said.

The suspected shooter was taken into police custody a short time later, authorities said. He hasn't yet been charged, police said.

Minutes later, at 3:35 a.m., a 28-year-old woman was shot in the buttocks on Utica Avenue, police said. The victim told investigators she heard the shots then felt pain, officials said. She was taken to Kings County Hospital and is expected to survive, police said.

About an hour later, a 22-year-old man was shot in the foot on McKeever Place, police said. The man also reported to police that he heard the shots and felt pain but was uncooperative with investigators after that, police said. He was taken to Kings County Hospital and is also expected to survive, authorities said.

Parade organizers didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

The parade has been marred by violence near the route in recent years.

Last year, at least two people were shot and an NYPD officer suffered minor injuries before the parade started, according to news reports.

In 2012 two men were fatally stabbed and three others were shot after the parade ended, according to news reports.

Denise Gay was sitting on the porch of her building on Park Place when she was shot once in the head during an exchange of gunfire between police and a gunman about three hours after the parade ended in 2011. Ms. Gay slumped into her daughter's arms and died at the scene. The death of Ms. Gay hasn't been linked to the parade. Two NYPD officers were also injured in the gunbattle.

At a news conference last Thursday, addressing their safety plan for the parade, NYPD officials said they would be monitoring gang activity and keeping watch over people recently released from prison.

You are not being judged . You are white Scottish and your husband is Indian
Black people are the ones being judged or misjudged from these type of incidents

i have been living in brooklyn for a few years and have attended the jouvert once and it was a nice time. the trouble is that there are a lot of troublesome afro american kids who come out to jouvert only to make mischief.

unfortunately this is the same dynamic that takes place in nottinghill carnival where there are tons of iddle british youths both black and white who see the parade as an opportunity to misbehave.

as for deblassio, he's a real wanker, this clown is actually seeking an excuse to cancel jouvert and to some extent the whole labor day experience on the parkway, either that or relocating it away from the eastern PKWY under pressure from his jewish voter base.

the jews on the PKWY desperately wants to dead the parade and tried on many occasions under previous mayors to have it limited, and i wont be surprised if they paid people to do these shootings to lay a stain and an indictment on the whole celebrations.

IMO they could take stricter measures to alleviate these shootings, in the same manner they implemented better security measures for the boston marathon and the ball drop in time SQ.

Reginald Moise... yeah that sounds like an "afro american" name.

And I'm sure you can back up that statement with actual proof, right?

Quote
In the hours after two people were killed early Monday, the mayor seemed to suggest that he was open to ending J’ouvert. But on Tuesday, he ruled that option out, saying that his statement that “every option will be on the table” had been misinterpreted.

“I think it was very clear yesterday that we were not including the option of ending something which has gone on for decades and decades,” Mr. de Blasio said at a news conference with police officials. “We have to find out a way to make it safer.”
