Congrats to Naps  :D

Game Highlights  http://www.tv6tnt.com/sevenpm-news/-NAPS-WIN-BIG-4-281244811.html

This highlight show you everything you need to know about T&T football. You see this approach to the game in NTs also and it is a very sad thing. Basic understanding of the game is lacking.

Apparently defending is an after thought. Individual defending is woeful at best. Group defending non-existent . Not good at all.

Fyzabad make QRC see red
By Kern De Freitas (Express).

Queen’s Royal College may have made it back to top flight football in the BG T&T Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL), but it won’t be a triumphant homecoming.

That’s because the “Royalians” were beaten 3-1 by Fyzabad Secondary in a penalty shoot-out to finish second best in yesterday’s Championship a Division “Big Eight” final at Hasely Crawford Stadium’s training ground in Port of Spain.

Marvin Seuradge rifled the decider high into the right corner of Jadel Poon Lewis’s net to send his team and their fans screaming with delight, while a subdued QRC sank to the turf, perhaps in equal measure of weariness and disappointment, as a hard-fought, balanced contest that remained 0-0 after regulation time ended in a drubbing from the spot.

“Fyzo” coach Brian London, best known in the calypso fraternity for his consistent appearance in the Dimanche Gras Finals--with a best finish of runner-up--and his maiden extempo crown in February, was more sober in his reflection but every bit as satisfied.

London, who also has a degree in sport studies from the University of Trinidad and Tobago, pointed out that his team has been through a lot this season, and only got into the Big Eight via protest.

Once they were here, though, Fyzabad made the best of heir opportunity, getting to the semis, where they whipped fancied team Trinity College 4-1.

Fitness was a big part of his thrust in his second year at the helm, and for London, himself a national former youth player and marathoner, it paid off.

Said London: “Funny enough, we got the team nobody wanted to play...Trinity. We happened to draw them in the semi-finals, and when we beat Trinity 4-1, nobody wanted to play us after that.”

It was a keenly contested match, but the goal scoring chances were few and far between, with most of the battle in midfield. QRC looked a bit more organised, but Fyzabad were solid in defence to ensure a 0-0 halftime scoreline.

But as QRC tired late on in the match, and a few Fyzo players started swooning to cramp, the Southern, dressed predominantly in red, surged looking for the go-ahead goal. They shut it down in the final 15 minutes, but QRC’s attempts to dribble their way into the box forced their opponents into no more than a a couple of nervous glances.

Kicks from the penalty mark were a fitting way to decide the contest, and Fyzabad, kicking second, went 2-0 up after QRC missed from Joash Williams and Dimitry Dunkley.

The Royalians seemed to have given up by their body language, until Fyzabad missed one after T’Shad Selvon had hit the net.

Another QRC error allowed Seuradge to seal it, and Fyzabad a big celebration for their long travels.

Today, St Augustine Secondary’s girls will take on Scarborough Secondary in the girls Big Four finale from 3 p.m., two hours before Championship Big Eight losing semi-finalists face off, both at Hasely Crawford Stadium.

Fyzabad takes Big-Eight title.
T&T Guardian Reports.

Princes Town, Trinity go for promotion spot today

Fyzabad Secondary yesterday lifted the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Championship Division Big-Eight title, following a penalty shoot-out win over Queen’s Royal College (QRC) following a goalless stalemate.

The South Zone team got the edge by converting three penalty attempts to QRC’s one.

Both teams will be represented in the second Premier Division season, next year, along with one other team - either Princes Town West or Trinity College of Moka.

Those two teams will meet in the Big-Eight third-place playoff, from 5 pm today at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo, from 5 pm, in the second match of an SSFL double-header.

Both teams already met in the group stage of the Big-Eight competition with Princes Town taking a 2-1 win.

After topping Group A with all three wins, Princes Town West came up short in the Big-Eight semifinal losing 1-0 to QRC.

Trinity College, the runner-up of Group A lost 4-1 to Fyzabad.

The opening match will see defending league and InterCol champion, St Augustine Secondary face off with Scarborough Secondary in the final of the Girls’ Big-Four competition.

Fixtures

Today—Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo

Girls Big-Four final

St Augustine Secondary v Scarborough Secondary, 3 pm

Boys Championship Big-Eight third-place playoff

Princes Town West v Trinity College (North Zone), 5 pm

And this is where people expect the next crop of national players to develop from? These 16 & 17 year olds should be playing full seasons professionally so that they can learn the professional game. By the time these kids rejoin their Pro League clubs it will take 2-3 months to get them fit and forgetting the bad habits they have picked up. They may be lucky to get half a dozen Pro games before the end of the season.

Undisputed: St Augustine crowned Girls’ Big-Four champs again.
T&T Guardian Reports.

St Augustine made it back-to-back Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Girls’ Big-Four titles, yesterday, when the “Green Machine” triumphed 2-0 over Scarborough Secondary, at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Port-of-Spain.

An own goal in the dying moments of the first half spurred on the tenacious girls in green, who then went on to seal the win with a second goal, scored by Anna Williams in the 75th minute.

It was a fitting result for St Augustine, which recently ended their East Zone campaign with wins from as many matches, scoring 27 goals along the way while conceding only two. Just over a week ago, St Augustine yet again made a case for champions’ status when it defeated Point Fortin East, 4-1, in the Big-Four semi-final.

Point Fortin was off to an almost equally impressive league campaign, which included seven wins from eight matches with a goal tally of 55 for and one against.

Scarborough, too, was no walkover, as the Tobago Zone winner defeated North Zone’s Bishop’s Anstey, 3-1, in the other Big-Four semi-final.

That, after winning all their league fixtures. In the second match at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Trinity College (North Zone) got the edge over Princes Town West by virtue of a penalty shoot-out after both teams played to a goalless draw at full-time in the Boys’ Big-Eight third-place playoff.

Trinity won the shoot-out 4-3 to gain promotion to next year’s SSFL Premier Division, joining Big-Eight champion Fyzabad Secondary and QRC, the runner-up.

It was a bitter pill to swallow for Princes Town West, which was otherwise outstanding this season. Princes Town West first took the South Zone title by winning seven out of ten league matches, before advancing to the Big-Eight.

The Big-Eight was played with two groups of four, with the top two teams in each group advancing to the semi-finals.

Princes Town dominated its group winning all three matches (12 goals for and one against). However, at the semi-final stage, Princes Town was blanked 1-0 by QRC.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Light and Life outshine Scarborough in InterCol.
T&T Express Reports.

Pentecostal Light and Life outshone Scarborough Secondary to snatch a 3-2 victory and a place in the Secondary Schools Football League Coca Cola InterCol at Mt Pleasant yesterday.

Scarborough were on level terms with Light and Life for 18 minutes of the encounter, and trailed 2-1 at halftime. They lacked the determination of the underdogs, though, who managed to scrap to victory.

Light and Life oscillated between purposeful and clumsy, hallmarked by a number of silly free kicks they gave away.

Scarborough needed a little more of that purpose to match their opponents, and only seemed urgent in the last 15 minutes.

Before the crowd — predominantly comprising pupils from Signal Hill and Bishop’s High School awaiting the second match of yesterday’s double header — could get into the match, Light and Life were ahead.

They won an early free kick, and Kareem Phillips was there to head in the opening item. From another set play Scarborough levelled, this time Kareem Thomas tapping home from close range in the 16th after the Light and Life defenders failed to deal with a corner kick. It would not be the only time a defensive error resulted in a goal.

In fact, the third item in the 33rd minute was quite comical. After goalkeeper Shaheem Carrington competently collected the ball from a Light and Life attack, he promptly gave it back to Turell James with a poor, low kick, and the latter complied with a toe-poke right back into a wide open goal.

They were 3-1 up on 50 minutes, this time from the goal of the match. Carrington’s pudgy replacement Kurt Roachford, not the most athletic in the air, beaten by a beauty of a blast from 20 metres by Jabari Francis after he collected the lateral pass from Hakeem Baynes.

Scarborough tried to fight back and cut the advantage to a goal through Shaquille Cox, who thumped in from close range, once again benefitting from a defensive error.

Scarborough should have equalised a few minutes later from a close range free kick but La Shawn Roberts hit the post.

Light and Life came closest to beefing up the scoreline after that, but their desperate defending late on became more important, as they closed out the match, living to fight another day.

Princes Town responds with InterCol win.
T&T Guardian Reports.

Princes Town Secondary brushed off a disappointing inability to gain Premier Division promotion yesterday, by booking a spot in the South Zone quarterfinal of the Coca-Cola InterCol, with a 2-0 win over Point Fortin East.

The clearly superior Princes Town team did so having held onto the advantage and then extending its lead, while losing a player in between for the last 25 minutes. The team’s maestro, top scorer and captain Anderson Toussaint tracked back from his advanced position to the goal posts after starting goalkeeper Kevin John was shown a straight red card for dangerous play around the 65th minute.

Princes Town already held a 1-0 lead at that point following a first half goal from Kadeem Joshua in the 38th minute. And, despite the added pressure with John’s dismissal, Princes Town managed to bag another goal, an insurance item in the 88th minute from Marcus John.

It was the ideal way for Princes Town to respond after narrowly failing to gain promotion to the Premier Division. Princes Town had won its group in the Big-Eight competition, but the suffered a loss in the semifinal and the third place-playoff to finish fourth, behind the three promoted teams.

Despite the win, Princes Town knew before hand, that its hurdle yesterday would be much more simple than the task ahead on Monday.

On Monday, a South Zone quarterfinal double-header will be played with Shiva Boys Hindu College facing Pleasantville (6-0 winner over Siparia West), at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium, from 2 pm, before Princes Town meets the mighty Naparima College, Big-Four and inaugural Premier Division champion, from 4 pm. Yesterday, preliminary action was also played in the East and Tobago Zones.

RESULTS

East Zone

Toco Secondary 3 v Sangre Grande 0

North Eastern 3 v El Dorado East 0

Five Rivers 2 v Hillview College 0

Barataria South v Valencia - Did Not Play

South Zone

Princes Town West 2 v point Fortin East 0

Pleasantville 6 v Siparia West 0

Moruga Secondary 4 v La Romain

Fyzabad Secondary 3 v Ste Madeleine 0

Tobago Zone

Pentecostal L&L 3 v Scarborough 2

Goodwood 2 v Roxborough 2
- Goodwood won 6-5 via penalty shootout

Naps keep on winning
T&T Express Reports.

Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Premier Division and Big Four champions Naparima College continued their winning ways as they advanced past Princes Town Secondary 2-0 in their Coca-Cola InterCol 2014 South Zonal quarterfinal match yesterday at Manny Ramjohn Stadium in Marabella.

Pleasantville Secondary also got past Shiva Boys by the same 2-0 margin in the first game of the double-header Programme at the venue to advance to the South Zonal semifinals.

At another double-header at Larry Gomes Stadium in Malabar, saw Arima North pounding Five Rivers 7-0 in the East quarterfinal game, while San Juan North also handed Toco a 7-0 thumping in the second encounter.

And in the Central Zone, Presentation College had to resort to penalty kicks to eke out a win over Couva West after both sides were locked at 1-1 after regulation time. Pres won confidently 4-0 on penalties.

Tigers whip QRC, Mucurapo hammer Diego Central
T&T Express Reports.

St Anthony’s College did what was expected of them, sweeping by Queen’s Royal College (QRC) 4-1 at their Westmoorings home ground yesterday.

But the Premier Division number two team also showed they have some areas to work on to keep their title aspirations high, even though their victory was a mere formality.

They will meet East Mucurapo Secondary in the semi-final round, after the latter, demoted to the Championship round this season, found some confidence with a 9-0 drubbing of Diego Martin Central Secondary at Diego Martin.

Tekay Hoyce registered a hat trick in the 60th, 85th and 88th minutes after Diego Central managed to keep them down to a 2-0 halftime advantage.

Malique Quow opened the scoring for Mucurapo in just the first minute and Kazim Donald added another seven minutes later. The other scorers in the second half were Kathon St Hillaire (51st), Sherlon Roberts (55th), Keshawn Mark (80th) and Aquinde Marcellin (84th).

The “Tigers” of St Anthony’s also had a hat trick from Kwesi Allen, while midfielder Matthew Woo Ling, the standout player of the day, had the other effort against a spirited QRC, who responded late on from the spot.

Allen scored the first two items as the hosts took 25 minutes to break down the opposition, finishing a Woo Ling corner kick with a header back across goal into the far corner. Five minutes later they were firmly in the driver’s seat when the Tigers won a penalty and Allen stepped up to convert.

Throughout the match, though, St Anthony’s never really seemed to get into top gear, which left coach Nigel Grosvenor a lot more vocal than usual, perhaps trying to keep his team focused against a weaker, less physically imposing team.

QRC played with determination and at times, desperation, but lacked that penetration in the final third to get to the net.

Three minutes after the restart Woo Ling put the match beyond reach, as St Anthony’s demonstrated their patience in bringing back a play after being blocked in the QRC penalty area. Jules Lee pulled back from the right to feed Leon Whyle in midfield, and he played on for Denzil Woods, who slipped Woo Ling through. The latter had enough time to pick his spot to the left in a one-on-one opposite QRC custodian Jadel Poon Lewis.

In the 74th Woo Ling and Allen again combined, this time a near post header from a right-sided corner.
St Anthony’s gave up a clumsy penalty two minutes later, which Joash Williams won and finished, but it was only consolatory.

The Tigers move on to next week’s encounter with an opponent that has been unlucky this season, and not a prospect to take so lightly.

RESULTS
St Anthony’s 4 (Denzel Woods 24th, Kwesi Allen 29th, 71st, Matthew Woo Ling 50th) v QRC 1 (73rd pen)

East Mucurapo 9 (Tekay Hoyce—hat-trick, Malique Quow, Kazim Donald, Sherlon Roberts, Akquinde Marslin, Keshawn Mark, Kathon St Hillaire) v Diego Martin Central 0

Today’s Fixtures

East Zone Quarterfinals

St Augustine v North Eastern, Larry Gomes Stadium, 2 pm

Trinity East v Valencia, Larry Gomes Stadium, 4 pm

Tobago Semifinals

Signal Hill v Pentecostal L&L, Roxborough, 3 pm

Speyside v Goodwood, Roxborough, 5 pm.

Signal Hill, Speyside in Tobago InterCol final
T&T Express Reports.

Signal Hill will play Speyside in the Coca-Cola InterCol Tobago Zone final Monday after both teams won their semifinals yesterday at Roxborough. Speyside took the easier route to the final when they won in regulation time 4-1 over Goodwood in the first of a doubleheader.

Signal Hill Secondary took the game all the way to penalties, but won convincingly there 4-1 over Pentecostal L&L after both teams were tied 3-3 at the end of 90 minutes.

In the East Zone, St Augustine Secondary and Trinity East advanced to the semifinal stage when they posted similar wins at the Larry Gomes Stadium, Malabar yesterday.

In the first game of the double-header the Green Machine defeated North Eastern College 3-0, while Trinity East also managed a 3-0 victory over Valencia.

Trinity upset Fatima to reach InterCol semis
T&T Express Reports.

Fatima College became the first North Zone Premier Division casualty of the 2014 Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Coca Cola InterCol series when they were upset 3-1 by Trinity College at Fatima Grounds, Mucurapo Road yesterday.

St Mary’s College were also in action yesterday, and they managed a 7-0 win over Malick Secondary to keep their InterCol ambitions alive at their St Mary’s Serpentine Road, St Clair base.

Rickel Dickson and Aaron Skeene both doubled up for St Mary’s, while Justin Brooks, Ethan Shim and Nathan Hart all registered on the score sheets.

Fatima have not been consistent this season in the Premier Division, and failed to get out of the blocks in their favoured tournament this time around.

It means that at least one Championship Division side will play in the North semi-finals, with Trinity set to face St Mary’s in one semi-final four encounter, while St Anthony’s College will face East Mucurapo for a place in the final.

Yesterday’s Central Zone quarter-finals, slated for Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva, were postponed due to issues with the venue.

Instead, Chaguanas North will now play Preysal Secondary today at Hugo Francis Ground, Chaguanas, from 3.30 p.m., the same time ASJA Boys tackle Miracle Ministries at Carapichaima East.

In Girls East Zone semi-final action, St Augustine Girls and Bishop’s East High School scored emphatic 4-0 and 4-1 victories over St George’s College and Five Rivers Secondary respectively.

Yesterday’s InterCol Scores

North Zone quarter-finals:

Trinity 3 v Fatima 1

St Mary’s 7 v Malick 0

Central Zone matches postponed

Girls East Zone semis

Champs St Augustine out; Pres, St Benedict’s win big in South
T&T Express Reports.

Coca Cola InterCol quarter-final matches yesterday stayed true to form, with no upsets in the three Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) zones that saw action. But national champions St Augustine Secondary was knocked out of the competition.

It rained goals in the South with 12 items in two encounters at Manny Ramjohn Stadium in Marabella. Premier Division team Presentation College San Fernando hammered lowly Moruga Secondary 5-0, with Kyle Moodie doubling up for “Pres”, while his teammates Kareem Riley, Nate Brooks and Darnell Hospedales all got their names on the score sheets.

The other South encounter saw St Benedict’s College whip Fyzabad Secondary 5-2.

In Central, Chaguanas North stepped up from a 1-0 halftime lead to cruise home 4-1 against Preysal Secondary at Hugo Francis Ground in Chaguanas.

Matthias Williams’ hat-trick made it an easy day for Chaguanas North along with an Isaiah Cadogan penalty, while Leon Gilmore got Preysal’s consolation goal.

And ASJA Boys needed a penalty shootout to edge Miracle Ministries after the teams played out a 0-0 regulation scoreline at Carapichaima East.

A Larry Gomes Stadium double-header in the East saw San Juan North Secondary tame Arima North Secondary 3-1, but Trinity East had to work harder to end St Augustine Secondary’s season and their title defence with a 1-0 triumph at the Malabar venue.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Speyside, Scarborough claim InterCol titles.
T&T Guardian Reports.

Speyside Secondary and Scarborough Secondary lifted the first InterCol titles among the boys and girls teams, following wins over Signal Hill Secondary and Bishop’s High, respectively in the Tobago Zone finals.

In the girls’ contest Jahmila Edwards and Aaliyah Charles scored first half goals, before Njemile Charles and Jeanile Lawrence completed another comfortable win, this time, 4-0 for Scarborough.

Scarborough added the biggest trophy in school girls’ football to the league crown it recorded in the Tobago Zone recently. The school from Tobago’s capital was also close to capturing the Big-Four title recently as well, but the team lost 2-0 to St Augustine Secondary.

In the second match in Tobago, Speyside Secondary and Signal Hill were locked 2-2 at the half, before the former went on a rampage to pick up the prestigious title. Top scorer Brandon Benjamin notched a brace for the winning team, while Weah Adams, Quanc Frank and Kerri McDonald got one each.

Akeil Frank and Ackel Carrington scored in the first half for Signal Hill.

There was also action in the Central Zone, yesterday, but at the semifinal stage, with Chaguanas North easing into the final with a 3-0 win over ASJA Boys. The opening double-header match at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva, however, was less straightforward. However, in the end, Carapichaima found itself in a familiar place in the final after defeating Presentation College of Chaguanas in a penalty shoot-out following a 2-2 draw at full time.

Today, eight teams from the North and South Zones will be seeking their spots in one of two InterCol zonal finals. In the North Zone, St Anthony’s College and East Mucurapo will clash at St Mary’s College Ground, Serpentine Road, from 3.30 pm, while Trinity College and St Mary’s meet at Fatima College Ground, Mucurapo Road.

In a highly anticipated encounter, Premier Division and Big-Four champion Naparima College will vie for a spot in another final against Pleasantville Secondary in the last-four stage in the South Zone, at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella, from 2 pm.

Two hours later, Presentation College of San Fernando and  St Benedict’s College will face off in the second double-header match.

‘Naps’ go for triple crown repeat
By JONATHAN RAMNANANSINGH (NEWSDAY).

Naparima College will be hoping to repeat their iconic triple-crown haul of national football titles which was achieved 15 years ago under former coach Jan Steadman, when they square off against rivals St Benedicts in the this year’s edition of the Coca Cola Intercol South Zone finals which kicks off tomorrow.

Having already hoisted the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) and Big Four crowns for the competitive season thus far, Naparima College are once again on the brink of creating football history.

In yesterday’s semi-final clash against Pleasantville Secondary at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella, yesterday, ‘Naps’ moved one step closer to another historic season haul when they disposed of their opponents 4-0 to advance.

From as early as the 11th minute, Naparima led the charge forward with Nicholas Dillon swinging a menacing cross in from the flank. However, there was no one following through to slot it home. Dillon continued to pester the Pleasantville defence and shot wide of the target seven minutes later. Naparima continued to apply pressure and were duly rewarded in the 34th minute when Martieon Watson received the ball at the edge of the penalty area and slapped it into the far corner (1-0).

Two minutes from the half-time break, national Under-20 standout Jabari Mitchell played a defence-splitting pass to forward Akinola Gregory who made no mistake to find the back of the net (2-0).

At the resumption, Pleasantville squandered their rare chances and were made to pay as Mitchell then etched his name on the scoresheet with a well-built play comprising teammates Dillon and Michael Basdeo (3-0) in the 68th. One minute before the end of normal time, Dillon latched on to a precise Basdeo through-ball and netted once more to complete the 4-0 sweep and secure a place in the 2014 Zonal final.

Additionally, St Benedicts advanced to tomorrow’s final by holding off Presentation College, San Fernando, in the penalty shootout. Both teams played to a 0-0 result before kicks from the spot went in favour of the Southern Lions.

And in what can be considered the upset of the season, East Mucurapo Secondary dumped defending Intercol champions St Anthony’s College out by squeezing out a 5-4 win on penalty kicks yesterday. At the end of 90 minutes and extra time, the scores were deadlocked at 1-1 and resulted in kicks from the spot. They now meet St Mary’s in the North Zone final after they ousted Trinity North 2-1 in yesterday’s semi-final.

Naparima College will play St Benedict’s College on Thursday at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium at 4pm to decide the South Zone Intercol champion.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

San Juan North claim East Zone title
T&T Express Reports.

San Juan North Secondary grabbed the first national semi-final berth when they edged Trinity East 3-2 in the East Zone final yesterday at the Larry Gomes Stadium in Malabar, yesterday.

San Juan will now play the winner of the national quarter-finals between Tobago Zone InterCol winners Speyside and the yet to be determined North champions to be played on Tuesday at Shaw Park.

East Mucurapo will play St Mary’s College in the North InerCol finals for the crown at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, tomorrow.

Today, there are two finals in the Coca-Cola Boys InterCol competition. The South title will be decided when Naparima, the 2014 SSFL Premier Division and SSFL Big Five champions, continue their quest for a thrid consecutive title when they square off against rivals St Benedict’s College at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium in Marabella from 3:45 p.m. Then at 4:30 p.m. at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva, Carapichaima and Chaguanas North will tussle for the Central crown.

In the BGTT/First Citizens Girls Intercol 2014, Point Fortin East tackle Debe Secondary at Mannie Ramjohn from 2 p.m. for the South Zone title. Point Fortin girls walloped Cowen Hamilton by a massive 26-0 margin in their quarterfinal match, before dominating Fyzabad Secondary 5-0 in their zonal semi-final last Thursday to advance to today’s final.

Debe also had an easy time of advancing to the final, defeating Princes Town West 10-0 in the quarters before shutting out St Joseph’s Convent, San Fernando, 4-0 in the semis.

Benedict’s takes South InterCol at Naps’ expense.
T&T Guardian Reports.

Naparima College, the school which brough thrills and excitement to the SSFL this year met an exit from the CocaCola competition yesterday, after losing 2-1 to St Benedict’s College in the final of the South Zone competition.

It was a come-from-behind effort from St Benedict’s, the fourth place finisher at the inaugural SSFL Premier Division over “Naps”, which took the season by storm winning both the top tier league competition and the Big-Four.

Martieon Watson opened the scoring in the 40th minute to give Naparima the narrow lead into the break, after a flurry of missed opportunities from the highly rated Nicholas Dillon and Jabari Mitchell.

Then, five minutes after the restart, St Benedict’s found the equaliser from Moriba Des Cartes, before taking the shock lead and the winner from Shemar Ravello.

Even before the match, St Benedict’s was one of few teams to do damage to Naparima all season. Just before going on a brilliant run to the Premier Division title, Naparima suffered a 3-0 defeat by St Benedict’s midway through September.

St Benedict’s will now represent the South Zone in the National InterCol competition and will face Carapichaima in the semifinal, on Thursday at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella.

Carapichaima East secured the Central Zone title by dethroning Chaguanas North Secondary in the final. Caps exacted revenge for last year’s loss by issuing a comfortable 3-0 victory against a team, which was already deflated by its relegation from the Premier Division.

Today, the last team in the National InterCol competition will be determined in the North Zone final. East Mucurapo and St Mary’s College will square off at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo, from 4.30 pm.

The winner of that match will meet Speyside Secondary in the lone InterCol quarterfinal match on Tuesday in Tobago.

St Benedict’s end Naps’ triple crown bid
T&T Express Reports.

St Benedict’s College ended Naparima College’s bid for a season sweep yesterday, defeating them 2-1 on an 82nd-minute goal from Shemar Ravello in the Coca Cola InterCol South Zone final.

The win was St Benedict’s first zonal InterCol title since 1992.

At Manny Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella, Ravello’s strike ended Naparima’s season and crowned the La Romain Lions’ South champs, also putting them into the national semi-finals, where they will face Carapichaima East Secondary of the Central Zone.

“Caps” snatched the Central Zone crown yesterday with a 3-0 whipping of Chaguanas North Secondary.

In the South match, Big Four and Premier League winners “Naps” looked to have one foot in the door for the final four competition, but InterCol has proved there is never any sure victor.

Marteion Watson put his team ahead in the 40th for a 1-0 halftime lead. St Benedict’s came surging back through Mariba Des Cartes, five minutes after the resumption before Ravello had the last word.

St Benedict’s coach Dexter Cyrus is pleased with his troops’ efforts, but says thy must take it one match at a time.

“We actually beat Naps 3-0 earlier in the season,” Cyrus told the Express. “We had no reason to fear.” He chalked the results up to heir fitness regime, which he said was among the best in the League, allowing them to be superior late on in matches.

Cyrus added: “We want to take it one game at a time. I don’t want thinking about the final during the semis.”

Today will be last zonal final, with East Mucurapo Secondary taking on St Mary’s College from 3.30 p.m. for a chance to face Tobago’s Speyside Secondary in the lone semi-final

Skipper Sam fires San Juan to East Intercol title
By JONATHAN RAMNANANSINGH (Newsday).

A HAT-TRICK from captain Brent Sam propelled San Juan North Secondary to be crowned 2014 Coca Cola Intercol East Zone champions by holding off a persistent Trinity College East 3-2 in the final at the Larry Gomes Stadium, Arima yesterday.

Sam led the charge for his outfit and blanked Shawn Bonval’s two goals coming from the opposition.

San Juan North became the first team to capture its Zonal Intercol crown as the remaining finals will be contested today and tomorrow.

In action today, Naparima College are on the brink of repeating their historic 1999 triple-crown schools football title-haul but will have one final challenge to face at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella, from 3.45 pm today, when they lock horns with St Benedict’s College in an anticipated Coca Cola Intercol South Zone final.

The Angus Eve-led unit has already captured the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) and Big Four trophies for the season thus far and is intent on retaining the hat-trick of titles, some 15 years later.

‘Naps’ have proven to be the most dominant force on the schools circuit this year and are favoured to win today’s encounter.

Speaking to head coach Eve yesterday, he revealed that today’s match will be approached like all of the team’s previous matches - with the sole intention of victory.

“We have a dedicated bunch of guys and they have been working really hard this year. A win today is our ultimate goal but the triple-crown would indeed be a pinnacle factor for me, the entire team and the school at large,” said Eve.

The former national player noted that his players have achieved a unique balance between their football and academics, a mix which has helped them progress through the season by succeeding in both disciplines. Also in action in their zonal finals today are Carapichaima East versus Chaguanas North (Central) at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva, from 3.45 pm.

Tomorrow will see both finalists of the North Zone, St Mary’s and East Mucurapo, go for glory at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo, from 4.30 pm.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Penalty InterCol glory for Mucurapo
T&T Express Reports.

Determination was the key for East Mucurapo Secondary as they defeated St Mary’s College 3-2 on penalties to lift the Secondary Schools Football League Coca Cola North Zone InterCol title at Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain yesterday.

The two teams who finished on opposite ends of the BGTT Premier Division League competition, played to a 0-0 regulation time score before Mucurapo—who will be demoted to the Championship Division at the end of the season—held their nerve to come out on top for their first North Zone InterCol title since 2004.
Tekay Hoyce slotted home the first kick from the penalty sport before Travell Edwards missed the second to give CIC a lifeline.

However Malique Quow and Kazim Donald both scored, while goalkeeper Aaron Enil stopped two shots to seal the title and give their school something to celebrate at the end of a tough campaign.

“We went into the InterCol with a positive attitude,” Mucurapo manager Brinsley Hudson told the Express following the win.

“I think we had more determination and we believed in ourselves more,” he added.

“Not being able to stay up in the Premier League, we wanted to come away with something so we really trained for this and we had a good plan coming into the game,” the Mucurapo manager explained.

“It was a heavy ground and they had more possession and we had some opportunities to score which we did not capitalise on but we knew that we had the best Under-20 goal keeper in the country so we always had confidence that if we had to go into a penalty situation, we would prevail.

“We played our game and they played theirs and at times we got caught up playing their game as well but we settled in the second half more and we created some chances but we still could not put them away.

“We know St Mary’s are a solid bunch, they have some strong players and we like the passing game so we knew once we kept the ball on the ground we felt we could come away with a win,” Hudson added.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Tobago schools bigger next year says Cadette

Tobago schools bigger next year says Cadette
By Sean Nero (T&T Guardian)

Tobago will return bigger and stronger at next year’s Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) says Huey Cadette, secretary for Sport, Education and Youth Affairs in the Tobago House of Assembly (THA).

He said the new structure adopted for the 2014 season negatively affected the academic progress of athletes; a reality that neither the Assembly nor civil society could not accept.

The premier league concept was the new feature of the championship which coincided with the 50th Anniversary of the League.

Cadette said, “I did have discussions with the SSFL and the Tobago Zone and indicated that because of the new structure, which saw the introduction of a premier league, it would have placed significant pressure of Tobago teams by way of travel, which ultimately would have created a challenge on their ability to function in the school environment.”

He added, “This year, the Tobago Zone winner would have participated at a Big Four level only. I have had some discussions with both the SSFL and the Tobago Zone in terms of determining what happens for 2015 onwards, to ensure that in a real sense Tobago teams can participate for the entire premier league. That is something they would have to revisit, but obviously, I would have been disappointed that a Tobago team would not have had the opportunity to play through the league and therefore have an opportunity to compete against the best in Trinidad, and maybe hone their skills and have more competitive action.”

Providing an overview on the state of sports in Tobago, Cadette was clear that sport was in a “very good” place.

Having former Soca Warriors captain and ex-Manchester United star Dwight Yorke as its ambassador for sport, as well as fielding four athletes on the T&T Senior Women’s Football team, he said, Tobago undoubtedly added tremendous value to the national sporting foot-print.

In table-tennis, he said, athletes on the island seemed to dominate judging from results over the past two decades.

“We have seen excellent performances over the years in term of athletes in particular table tennis. We are seeing our dominance in Secondary School Champions over the last 23-24 years. But we also feel, though, that while we are seeing that success in the number of individuals making it to the elite level, we still feel the need for us to do a little more in terms of (the) community involvement and our facilities maintenance. We feel in some sporting disciplines there is still an opportunity for more Tobagonians to be seen and to get involved in the national set up,” he said.

To achieve that, the division of Sport was in discussions with national governing bodies seeking ways to ensure the structure for screening and selection in Tobago, allowed for more persons to be exposed.

Cadette said, “We also realise that there is constantly a need to improve our facilities and that is something that we are working on. We recently installed at the Dwight Yorke Stadium a certified new track which has been certified class 2 and we are extremely proud of that. We are hoping that in the coming months, we will see some activities to commission that track, and for 2015 we will see a season of athletes in Tobago: Zenith Relays coming back, the Falcon Games coming back to Tobago, (and) the Tobago Games, all in a bid to ensure that good things are happening for sport in Tobago.”
The Conquering Lion of Judah shall break every chain.

Chaguanas North protests Caps’ InterCol trophy win.
T&T Guardian Rports.

Coach claims dishonest record keeping

The referees who officiated the semifinal of the Coca Cola InterCol competition between Presentation College of Chaguanas and Carapichaima East Secondary, were expected to meet last evening to resolve an issue arising out of a protest filed by Chaguanas North Secondary.

On Friday, Chaguanas North wrote a letter of protest signed by its principal Premlal Seecharan and head coach Nicholas Griffith to general secretary of the Secondary Schools’ Football League, Azaad Khan, alleging that Carapichaima East fielded an ineligible player during the Central Zone InterCol final a day before, which Carapichaima won 3-1.

Griffith claims Carapichaima East fielded a player in the final, who he says should have been suspended for the final after receiving a yellow card during the semifinal against Presentation College. Griffith said he and his players sat waiting to play in the second semifinal double-header match, they all witnessed the player receive the yellow card.

The player in question is Keon Brown, who was confirmed as having received a yellow card during Carapichaima’s quarterfinal match against Tabaquite Secondary on November 10.

Three days after submitting the first letter, Griffith again wrote to Khan alleging that the referee’s report did not correctly identify the player who he said did in fact receive the only yellow card of the match. Griffith wrote: “We witness(ed) Keon Brown #27 giving away a penalty to Presentation for a handled ball; at this instance, he was not carded. However, earlier he made a tackle which was dangerous and he was immediately cautioned by the referee.”

That claim, however, was not substantiated in the referee’s report of the match, which had Kadiz Chandler as the only player booked in the semifinal. The match was officiated by David Ramkhelawan. Griffith added: “This (yellow) was the only card that the school received. However, in this report, it reflects Kadiz Chandler #3. To our knowledge, this (is) quite inaccurate and our request is that, as referee chair, you contact all persons who officiated on the game and get clarity of the matter and bring closure to this information which is presented.”

Griffith said he is yet to receive a response from Khan. The referee’s report is supposed be submitted to Khan within a 24 hour period, along with a match commissioner’s report. When Guardian contacted Khan, he said he was yet to view the card but was basing his response on the information provided to him by Lawrence Seepersad, the league’s assistant secretary in charge of operations.

The Guardian understands that the referee’s report was in the possession of Seepersad up to yesterday since the day the match was played on November 17. Seepersad, a teacher at Carapichaima East, is also responsible for assigning match commissioners to InterCol matches.

Khan admitted that he was supposed to receive the card from Seepersad, but said the delay was caused by weather conditions. He said there was no urgency in receiving the match report as it contained nothing out of the ordinary. “As far as I’m aware, the match report does not state that he (Brown) was yellow carded. Therefore, he was not suspended for the final,” Khan said.

Griffith, who filed the protest without viewing the referee’s report said he was convinced that Brown was the player who in fact received the yellow, and when he (Griffith) subsequently viewed a copy of the match report on Monday, he was surprised by what was contained on the card. Ramkhelawan was contacted yesterday and asked if he viewed the match card to spot any discrepancies.

The referee responded saying he verified that the signature on the match card was indeed his and said that “if someone forged my signature, they did a very good job.”

He also verified that all information contained in the card was what he wrote but could not confirm or deny if the player who was identified on the match card was not the player who was actually carded, due to the time lapse. Thus, he said he could not suggest that the match card was tampered with.

The Guardian tried unsuccessfully to contact Seepersad yesterday. Carapichaima East is scheduled to face South Zone winner St Benedict’s College tomorrow in the first InterCol semifinal at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Nine-man Mucurapo moves into InterCol semis.
T&T Guardian Reports.

East Mucurapo secured the last available Coca-Cola National InterCol semifinal spot, but will enter that fixture on Friday without a full-strength team, after finishing with nine players in its 2-0 win over Speyside Secondary yesterday.

Mucurapo made the trip to Roxborough, Tobago, and made light work of Speyside scoring two second half goals, even after its Under-17 national player Tekay Hoyce was red carded in the 52nd minute. Hoyce, a stand-out for Mucurapo in its penalty shoot-out win over St Mary’s College last Friday in the North Zone final was ejected for obscene and abusive language.

But, it took all of three minutes after Hoyce’s dismissal for Mucurapo to take the lead with a strike from Micah Lansiquot. And, even with 10 players, Mucurapo was able to double its advantage when Malique Quow scored again in the 77th minute. Then, in the dying moments of the contest, Mucurapo shot itself in the foot when Travell Edwards followed Hoyce early into the dressing room after receiving a red card of his own.

Mucurapo, which was relegated from the Premier Division after finishing second from bottom, saw its dream run continue yesterday, but will now face a daunting test against East Zone winner San Juan North in the second semifinal at the Larry Gomes Stadium, Arima, on Friday.

The winner of that match will play one of the other two semifinalists, St Benedict’s College or Carapichaima, both of which will meet on Thursday at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella. The InterCol final will take place on December 5.

Also in action yesterday was Miracle Ministries which recorded a 3-2 penalty shoot-out win over Scarborough Secondary. The win put Miracle Ministries into the Friday’s National semifinal where it will face St Augustine Secondary at the Larry Gomes Stadium, at 2 pm. Point Fortin East and St Francois will clash in the first girls’ semifinal tomorrow, from 2 pm, also prior to the boys’ encounter.
