Big League returns

It promises to deliver good football and bring back the big crowds to secondary schools football. Today, the 14-team BGTT First Citizens Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) kicks off. It’s exciting time for schools football, a return to the days when the best teams all played each other.

St Anthony’s College, for instance, head to La Romain on Saturday to play St Benedict’s, the same time East Mucurapo take on Arima in the East. It is a nostalgia moment remembered by those who played then, including San Juan North Secondary coach Jerry Moe.

‘’When I was young growing up it had that kind of atmosphere in school football. We had to travel all over Trinidad,’’ stated Jerry Moe, now coach at his former alma mater. ‘’It good that the school chose to go back in that direction.’’

The first day of Premier Division action takes place in the north with a double-header at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, featuring East Mucurapo and St Benedict’s College at 3.30 p.m., followed two hours later by a repeat of last season’s Big-5 semi-final clash between defending InterCol champions St Augustine Secondary and finalist St Mary’s College.

Below are a look at the four teams playing today. The Express will also feature some of the other teams tomorrow.

St Augustine the team to beat

Last season’s InterCol champions St Augustine Secondary are aware that everyone will be coming to beat them. The champions kick off the new Premier Division against St Mary’s College, the team which knocked them out of the Big 5 semis 6-5 on penalty kicks last season, following a goalless draw.

Coach Michael Grayson says defence will be his team’s strong point. He no longer has some of his big name players, but is confidence is not lessened. ‘’We have essentially a new team, but we expect to do just a good as last year,” Grayson said. “We not underrating ourselves, we not overrating ourselves either, but we aiming for the highest. If we fall short, we hit the stars.’’

The old team is gone, including former top players Ricardo John, the top-scorer in the SSFL last season, Shanon Gomez and Aiken Andrews. But Grayson thinks he has talented replacements. ‘’We had a pretty vibrant Under-16 and we had a number of incoming transfers into sixth form,’’ Grayson said. ‘’But we are not underestimating anyone. The difference with the league is that it have no weak side. Every game will be like a final. ‘’
 
Special brand from East Mucurapo

Selris Figaro, head coach of East Mucurapo, said he would love to see his team win the league and go further, but this season his charges are pretty young and are still developing. ‘Mucurapo has always been about development over the years and the reality is that most of the time players leave, some of them walk out of the system so my team is really a young team as most of them are 16-year-old.

They have been together for 2 1/2 months but like all the team have had difficulty gathering players.

‘’Everybody wants to win and win at all cost but at Mucurapo we try to play a special brand of football because that’s the direction football is going on the international stage.

St Mary’s College is another team hit by the loss of several key players and coach Jason Edwards said he would be happy with a top half finish for the ‘Saints.’ ‘’Last season was a real watershed for us and this season we are without the services of players like captain Miles Yorke, Rashad Hyacinth and goalkeeper Christian Attong who were all key players but have completed their final year of schooling.’’

Edwards said their departure is a big loss to the ‘Saints’ but there are some youngsters stepping in to fill the void so hopefully the team will not be as adversely affected. He identified last season’s promising striker Chinua Bernard as an improved player and one to note. He also mentioned midfielder Aaron Noel as well as senior defenders Rikhail Dickson and Marcus Wattley as being key to the ‘Saints’ line-up.

Benedict’s optimistic

St Benedict’s College coach Dexter Cyrus, while not overly confident was enthusiastic and optimistic about his team chances in the inaugural Premiership Division of the SSFL despite the ‘’La Romain Lions’’ having lost his entire attacking line-up, including promising striker Yaseu Rougier, who got a full scholarship.

Cyrus said the youngster held their own well to emerge victorious when placed against bigger boys in a series of pre-season friendlies against south zone teams. Cyrus said that because they will now face teams they may normally have met only at Intercol or Big-5 his main aim is to get the team to stay organised and keep its formation whether going forward or coming back.

You are correct about this. It was not such a big deal in my time. Early 70s. The travelling and traffic issues have increased tremendously. The inter zonal games should not be that bad. But the North-South, East South would have some problems iin the mid-week.

St Benedict’s wins SSFL opening match.

A goal on either side of the half by Mariba Des Cartes and Shaquille Williams sealed a comfortable 2-0 win for St Benedict’s over East Mucurapo in the opening match of the new look Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, yesterday.

Des Cartes gave St Benedict’s a deserved lead in the 31st minute after a period in which the southerners dominated the premier division clash. After receiving a pass inside the box Des Cartes made no mistake with a wide open goal in front him.

Diminutive number seven Williams gave his team a 2-0 lead in the 60th minute with a brilliant effort. Williams collected a pass just outside the box and cracked a left footed shot in the top corner beating the diving Mucurapo goalkeeper Terral Cambridge.

Before taking the lead the final pass let down St Benedict’s on a couple occasions. Shortly before the first half ended Travell Edwards had a decent attempt at goal, but his shot from about 25 yards failed to test the St Benedicts keeper as the ball sailed over the crossbar.

Mucurapo’s Kazim Donald unfortunately picked up a leg injury in the closing stages of the first half. With the man advantage, St Benedict's almost doubled its lead in first half injury time. After a corner kick was initially cleared by Mucurapo, the ball was struck back into the box, but the Benedict’s player could only hit the crossbar from eight yards out. Mucurapo looked to regroup as they trailed 1-0 at the half.

Mucurapo got two free kicks in the early stages of the second half but failed to test the Benedict’s keeper. In the 58th minute, Shemar Ravello who was a thorn in the side of Mucurapo for the entire evening got a good chance to score.

After a poor clearance by the Mucurapo keeper, Ravello took a shot from close to the penalty spot but could not finish.

After Williams gave the southerners a 2-0 lead, Mucurapo picked up the momentum and started to create some chances but failed to capitalise. As the match came to a close, many players started struggling with their fitness. In the 75 minute another Mucurapo player was forced to leave the field. Two minutes later, Des Cartes started suffering with cramps and he was also forced to leave the field. Both players were substituted.

In the 82nd minute Mucurapo failed again to find the target after a scramble in the box.

Ravello almost made it 3-0 in the 89th minute. Ravello found himself in the box after a brilliant run on the right side but misfired and failed to test the keeper. The final whistle came handing St Benedict’s a 2-0 victory.

In the second match at the same venue, St Mary’s College dominated the defending national Intercol champion St Augustine Secondary, defeating the “Green Machine” 3-0.

Scoring for the Saints were from Chinua Bernard in the fourth, Aaron Noel in the 15th and Ethan Shim in the 58th.

THE new season and new format of the BG T&T Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Premier Division certainly promised much on Day One, with a pair of ‘upsets’ in the opening double header at Hasely Crawford Stadium.

St Mary’s College got off to a winning start by running over St Augustine Secondary’s normally powerful “Green Machine” 3-0, while St Benedict’s College’s “La Romaine Lions” had a light snack in their 2-0 defeat of Mucurapo East Secondary, which could have easily been a full meal but for errant finishing by the South team.

The “Saints” of St Mary’s looked the best team on the day, though. Their organisation, ball possession and well-oiled passing mechanism ensured they were too much for a new-look St Augustine, even though St Mary’s themselves have quite a number of new faces in their lineup.

The scores read 2-0 in St Mary’s favour at halftime and could have been double that but for some glaring misses. Goals in the fourth, 15th and 58th minutes by Chinua Bernard, Aaron Noel and Ethan Shim settled the affair without fuss.

The Saints bulldozed their way to an early lead through Bernard, who finished a swift attacking play started by Shim. Shim slipped he ball to Noel, who laid on for Bernard to slot home from six metres out on the right.

It took 11 more minutes for St Mary’s to double the lead and Michael Grayson’s Green Machine was completely stalled on the ‘Hasely Crawford’ grass. Noel was only required for the simple tap in after Jamiel Williams lost his marker on the right and crossed for Bernard, who found Noel in front of goal.

The first half was all St Mary’s after that, and they were embarrassed for riches in missing in the 41st and 42nd minutes, first Noel failing to get over a nice Shim free kick which his header over bar, and then when Shim hesitated and allowed the St Augustine defence to recover from good shooting position on the left of the penalty area.

Shim did not regret an early second half miss for long, as he got another opportunity when St Augustine gave away the ball in their area in the 58th, and Bernard latched onto the error and held off two challengers before crossing for a neat, point blank range finish by Shim.

It was no doubt the better half of the match from a St Augustine point of view, but still not good enough to impact the result. They saw more of the ball and even launched a few threatening attacks of their own, the best falling to Keishawn Marcellin in the 68th, but St Mary’s defence held firm to keep out his shot from six metres.

Still, all is not lost for St Augustine. They still have a long season ahead of them; they may already know, though, that there is little tolerance for mistakes in the new 14-team Premier Division.

‘TIGERs’, ‘Naps’ coming hard.

St Anthony’s College coach Nigel Grosvenor said his team’s aim is to be crowned the first premiership champion despite a lot of new faces in his line-up. ‘’We are coming to play hard and to win, we’re not going to roll over and say our players are young so we don’t have that expectation,’’ said Grosvenor, adding that it is the ‘Tigers’ intent to reign supreme.

‘’We have had a lot of changes due to losing nine or ten players from last season’s starting line-up, so the team is a very young one and this is going to be a rebuilding year for us. Hopefully, we are going to be competitive.’’

Grosvenor said his young charges have been hard at training during the pre-season and they benefitted from two one-week camps, with the last one in Tobago used for bonding and camaraderie. He said the ‘Tigers’ are a disciplined team with some measure of experience but it’s difficult to predict how they will perform at this point, adding that captain Mwasi Charles is earmarked to make an impact.

Also possessing lofty aspirations is Naparima College coach Angus Eve, who is confident that whoever wins the Premiership Division of the Secondary Schools Football League, have his team to beat.

‘’We lost influential national youth player Barry Humphreys from what was primarily an Under-16 team last season and we currently have a little issue where five of our players including captain Martieon Watson, Nicholas Dillon and Gerard Dass are with the national Under-20 team and another four are on tour with W Connection.

‘’So we have to count them as losses because the season is only one round so by the time they return we would have played about five or six matches already and could either be winning or losing.’’ Eve said the team did its pre-season warm-ups in Tobago where they had creditable performances against bigger and stiffer opposition.

“We suffered losses to Stokely Vale and Phoenix FC by 2-1 and 4-2 margins, respectively, while we drew with Bethel and defeated St Clair Coaching School 4-2.

“I believe in the work we’ve done with the group that we have, I believe in the boys and I think that anybody who comes up against us will have a very tough game.’’

At Fatima College, coach Richard Hood said that while survival in the Premiership is the main aim of Fatima College, he hasn’t ruled out winning a few titles. “The loss of two of last season’s full backs, including stopper Leland Archer was covered by the drafting of defenders Adrian Constantine and Mosiah Griffith from Queen’s Royal College (QRC).

“They have fitted into the team and our system really nicely so I think we’ll be fine.’’ Hood said it’s difficult to make any predictions due to a lack of pre-season matches and a certain degree of unfamiliarity with some of the teams.

“First and foremost, we would want to ensure that we survive in the Premiership, however, I think we have enough quality in the squad to do well,’’ Hood said. “We have Shiva Boy’s and I know absolutely nothing about them at all so we’ll have to play it ear by ear.’’

Meanwhile, the Central Zonie is represented by familiar rivals Carapichaima East Secondary and Chaguanas North Secondary who meet today.

Carapichaima East Secondary has a new coach in Kevin Jeffrey, who makes his debut as a schoolboy football coach. Jeffrey has played for the T&T national U-23 team, four semi-professional teams in the US, and also for North East Stars in the local professional league. Jeffrey admits that Carapichaima’s preparation has not been the greatest, yet he still looks for a top six finish. He has lost top-scorer Simon Joseph to St Anthony’s College and several potential top players, some of whom did not get favourable enough exams results to keep them in the school.

‘’The squad is not as strong as we would have originally hoped for but, nevertheless, we plan to give a good account of ourselves,’’ Jeffrey said. “We have a young squad and in terms of preparing for the future, that is what we plan to do. We plan to be a solid team.’’

Their rivals Chaguanas North Secondary have lost key player Deon O’garro to a full scholarship at Wiley College in Texas, USA. Coach Nicholas Griffith is confident his players can step up. Led by captain Jesse Frank, Chaguanas won the Central Zone league and InterCol and will lead again this year.

Also returning to the line-up are utility player Malik Campbell, attacking midfielder Cassim Kellar and stopper Chad Paul. With a few ‘development games’ under their belts, the coach sees a lot of promise in the youngsters who will make up the rest of the squad.

In the East, San Juan North Secondary has an old boy as its head-coach in Jerry Moe, who is also coached professional club Caledonia AIA. Moe has a young squad with a lot of guys now going from form four to form five. A lot of key guys from last season did not get back in the school because of bad exam results.

‘’Its a work in progress right now. The biggest challenge is coming up against guys older that us because their are some teams with guys in upper six,’’ Moe declared. “The biggest challenge is getting them to play as a team. They have the talent, but they don’t work as a team.’’

Moe expects to take a couple of games before his team gel as a unit, as oppose to being ready from the first match.

Moe, a former national youth player, has also decided to give back to the game by assisting his former school. “When I was growing up it had good coaches in the schools. Alvin Corneal was coaching Fatima, Jimmy Blanc was in St Mary’s, you had Bertille St Clair in Tobago and Edgar Vidale in South. So, you get a good education in your football.“Even though these guys were coaching the national team they were still giving back to the schools. That was one of the main motivation for me going back in the school system.’’

Trinity College East have set their sights high this season and have brought in a few players who could possible take them to their goal. Their coach Adrian Romain, one of the youngest coaches in the Secondary Schools Football League Premier Division, believes he has brought together a talented and experienced group of players and wants to finish in the top six at the end of the campaign.

Arima North Secondary placed third in the SSFL East Zone last year and were InterCol quarter finalists. They will have some of last season’s players back for 2014, but will also have a number of new players. They started their preparations in July and all the players are excited about the new format which will see the best teams in the country do battle in one league.

“It is the top teams and it is a national tournament. We are expecting a tough season,’’ said a spokesperson for the team.

it don't matter..Here HS games sometimes play at 1 and 2, to allow travel, and the boys finish school on time. At some schools they are then require to arrive early next day for ped support on what was missed/assigned. My observation in studies & Canada, is that fan support at that age is more an event for the fan, than it is about level of football development & performance. There is actualy less negative pressure if no one is there to see you at a time(age and maturity), when you will most likely make your most mistakes in a game in your life, besides having more freedom to develop. Don't get me wrong doh, i think tt boys do develop faster, but it's not because of the fan part..but the high football knowledge, they get from an early age.. I actually wonder if the fans sometimes negatively affect many players. Unfortunately, something we cannot scientifically measure. What u think ?

When we went Toronto in 74 for the youth tournament, was the same thing. Mexico and Costa Rica give us a lesson in ball possession. What save us was the preparation for that tournament. We were extremely fit and played within our limitations. And we had a couple of exception players who carried the team. I think we are always a year or two behind especially at youth levels. At times when the teams are prepared well without the TTFA bachannal, the teams play above expectation.

I actually meant on average, our boys are relatively as individually skilled as their counterparts in NA. You correctly pointed out countries where football is their #1 sport, referencing National teams. Consequently, at that level where our boys seemed to have been lacking most was in psychology, team skills, and strategies..and again it might be due to, at the higher levels where our coaches were less experienced (this also involves the factor of experience from dealing with larger pools). The gap is closing doh..Our coaches are getting better..even if their selection pools haven't change, many arre now able to travel and learn from the larger pools.. not talking about , going somewhere for a course, but actually interacting with other ppl who have philosophies developed by dealing and living in such situations. If we can get more trained ppl to return home, this will improve even more..but alas, there is the prejudice that many returnees face "because u come from foreign, yuh feel yuh know more than me"... Maybe, maybe not..yet, the foreign ppl telling us stay..we would love you to coach us...I have seen so much of that... any further thoughts , Pete ?  Seeker?

Arima North dismantle ‘Pres’ Sando

Schools from North Trinidad dominated proceedings on day-two of the 2014 BG TT Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Premier edition yesterday as Arima North whipped Presentation College, San Fernando, 3-1, followed by a nail-biting 2-1 victory for Fatima College over Shiva Boys when action continued at Guaracara Park, Point-a-Pierre yesterday.

In the opening match-up, Arima North showed more intent and were able to string together some nice passing in and around the Southern-based team. Presentation never seemed to settle and were caught napping in defence as the Arima outfit pressed for the opener. And it came 25 minutes in, as a defensive blunder from the Presentation Lions saw striker Afton Molino pounce on a stray ball to slot home the first of his three.

Eight minutes later, another misunderstanding in the Presentation penalty area sent Molino squeezing through once more to send the Arima team 2-0 ahead and again past the shaky hands of “Pres” custodian, Tyrek James. As the opening period progressed, Presentation tried to play on the break but were kept in check. Molino would then complete his hat-trick by bagging his third minutes before half-time to send his squad 3-0 up.

Upon the resumption, ‘Pres’ showed a bit more desire and used the flanks as their delivery into the box. Bradley Lee Foon displayed some neat footwork combined with striker Kyle Moodie but the attacking pair still failed to find the finishing touch. In the 65th minute however, Presentation would get a consolation as Kristoff Burkett played one nicely in for Moodie, who sank his shot past Arima goalkeeper (3-1), Shundell Mayers.

In the feature match, a 10-man Fatima unit held their own to grasp a close 2-1 win over Shiva Boys. The opening period saw end-to-end action as both teams started in attacking mode. The Debe-based team had a golden opportunity in the eighth minute but Kadeem Ashford’s free-kick ricocheted off the upright for the first promising chance. Shiva Boys defender, Marvin Seuradge proved a hard one to pass as he kept the Fatima attackers in his pocket with precise clearances and clean tackles.

In the 18th minute it would change however, as Ashford’s clearance off a corner went the opposite direction and into his own net, giving Fatima the 1-0 advantage. Twelve minutes and one substitution later, Shiva would level the playing field as a the ball bounced out of custodian Nicholson Gordon’s hands and onto the feet of striker Quinn Rodney who made no mistake to capitalise (1-1).

Into the second period of play, Fatima settled and knocked the ball around optimistically. Shiva Boys had an opportunity wasted as forward Yohannes Richardson went one-on-one with the keeper, only to place it calmly into the last man’s hands. In the 81st minute with feet tiring on both ends, Fatima striker Marquise Hoyte latched on to a loose ball in the Shiva Boys area and comfortably slotted it into the net to send the visiting team 2-1 up.

Naparima College showed backbone to secure an opening victory in the BG T&T Secondary Schools Football League yesterday, coming from behind to edge their hosts San Juan North Secondary 2-1.

At Bourg Mulatresse, "Naps" overcame a slow start and early goal to take full points back to South, as Akindla Gregory supplied the winner 13 minutes before the end of regulation time.

Before that, Shane Sandy leveled to bring Naparima into the locker room on even terms at halftime, canceling out the 14th minute item from Jaycee David. San Juan pushed hard for the late equaliser, but the clinical finish was lacking, and therefore the points are as well.

Still, on a slick outfield that was blessed with showers prior to the encounter, there was enough to suggest that the new Premier Division might be pretty competitive this year.

Naparima's confidence will only grow under Angus Eve if they get a good early run in the League, while for San Juan, better finishing could see them improve as the season wears on.

The first goal was arguably the best. David got the perfect service, a floater coming in from the left, and his timing was even better as he slammed the half volley beyond helpless Naps goalkeeper Darriel Kurjah.

The exchanges were fairly even, but it took Naparima until the 37th to bring their threats to fruition, Sandy making full use of an attempted clearance. It sat up for him nicely as he sized up and launched the return ball from 30 metres through a crowd and past Jabari Brice in San Juan goal.

The home side pushed for the advantage after the break, but never quite found that touch needed in the final third.

Naparima, though, showed better ball handling and composure in attack, and they were rewarded late in the second half. A long ball into the San Juan defence, and a deflection off a defender invited Gregory to have a go at goal in the 77th.

He obliged by pushing the ball into the box and firing low, and firmly, past the onrushing Brice.

The final minutes of the match belonged to the home team, but late misses did not help their cause, leaving their opponents to go home the happier bunch.

Arima North Secondary made the perfect start to the inaugural Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Premier Division, yesterday, when the East Zone champions handed Presentation College of San Fernando, the reigning Big Five champion, a resounding 3-1 defeat.

The first match of a double-header at Guaracara Park, Point-a-Pierre, saw three different players on target for Arima, all of which were scored in the first half.

Arima North, a team which scraped into this year’s Premier Division after a tough campaign last season, wasted no time in its opening fixture.

The school found a lead within the first minute of play through Mitchell Mulick, before Josiah George added a second in the 25th minute. Aston Molino then scored an insurance item soon after the 30-minute mark.

Presentation College, the most successful school from the South Zone in recent years only found a reply in the 62nd minute through Levon Bass, but could not mount a come back.

The second match of the double-header saw Fatima College edge Shiva Boys Hindu College, 2-1.

Arima North joined Naparima College and St Anthony’s College, both of which recorded opening round victories, at the top of the standings after one round. Naparima got the better of San Juan North Secondary, 2-1, while St Anthony’s defeated Trinity College East, 4-2 in Trincity.

After a 2-2 half time score in the Tigers’ meeting with Trinity, the second half saw a heated battle with three players being ejected moments before the end.

Dareem David, who scored both goals for Trinity in the first half was sent off for violent conduct while Jarod Flament and Shakeem Patrick were also red carded for their retaliation on the same Trinity player. Kwesi Allen scored a brace for St Anthony’s, while Simon Joseph and Darius Ollivierra scored one each.

Then, in a keen cross town rivalry, Carapichaima East Secondary and Chaguanas North Secondary played to a goalless draw, at the former’s home ground.

After all 14 Premier Division teams played their matches, St Mary’s College took a lead in the standings on goal difference after recording the highest margin of victory. The Saints eased past reigning InterCol winner St Augustine Secondary 3-0 on Thursday in a surprisingly one-sided encounter. St Benedict’s College also opened in victory with a 2-0 win over East Mucurapo.

Tobago Championship kicks off today

Having opted to sit out of this year’s inaugural Premier Division, the top schools in the Tobago Zone will kick off the Championship season today with a double-header, carded to kick off at Shaw Park from 3 pm.

Bishop’s High and defending Tobago league and InterCol champion Speyside Secondary will play in the earlier fixture, before Scarborough Secondary and Signal Hill close the day’s proceedings with a 5 pm kickoff in the second match.

Tomorrow, Pentecostal L&L and Goodwood Secondary will close the opening round of matches in the lone fixture of the day. The two teams will meet at Signal Hill Ground, from 3.45 pm. Roxborough is on a bye.

They was provided a tent by st Benedict's and like that wasn't good enough for the Diego boys. Lol. The crowd for the st Mary's game was shocking. More than pro league. Love this format.
