His name was the focus of a question at a recent post-match press conference ... so that caught my attention. Fortunately, there's life after U-17 or not some would be 'permanently' dead and buried.

Corbin tricks Haiti as T&T lifts U-20 Caribbean crown
Posted by Lasana Liburd
Friday 19 September 2014 |  In International Sport, T&T National Teams, Volley

A Kadeem Corbin hattrick tonight secured a second Caribbean title for Trinidad and Tobago in just a month as the young “Soca Warriors” defeated Haiti 3-0 in the regional final at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain.

To be fair, the title of “Caribbean champ” sounds hollow when Jamaica is not involved. The just concluded competition was actually a qualifying tournament for the 2014 Under-20 CONCACAF Championship and Jamaica had already qualified as host nation.

Still, it is a welcome sight to see the two island republic walking off with trophies at this rate.

On August 26, Trinidad and Tobago lifted the inaugural senior women’s Caribbean title at the same Port of Spain venue. And, despite low-keyed marketing at best, over 4,000 supporters turned out to see the teenaged boys repeat the trick tonight.

They did not leave disappointed either as St Ann’s Rangers striker and former St Anthony’s College schoolboy Kadeem Corbin announced his presence on the international stage with a hattrick when it mattered most.

Both Trinidad and Tobago and Haiti will represent the Caribbean at CONCACAF level along with Cuba, Aruba and hosts Jamaica. Cuba clinched the third place prize earlier this evening with a 2-1 win over Aruba at the same venue.

The three goals in the final were not shared as evenly though. The young Warriors made sure of that.

Haiti kicked off with a reputation for incisive, attacking play; but the French-speaking islanders were out of their depth tonight.

The Haitians prefer a 3-4-3 system with one midfielder, Alessandro Campoy, operating as a free playmaker behind three orthodox forwards. But Campoy and company were hopelessly outmanned against Trinidad and Tobago’s stronger and faster five-man midfield.

The menace of Trinidad and Tobago wingers Levi Garcia and Aikim Andrews meant Haiti’s 3-4-3 system quickly became 5-2-3. And the visitors simply could not get a toehold on the game.

Haiti coach Jerome Velfert pointed to another reason for his team’s flat final display.

“Four games in seven days is too much,” said Velfert, via a translator.

Haiti’s final qualifying game was on Wednesday night while Trinidad and Tobago, who qualified for the final on Sunday night, took a calculated risk of using an experimental XI on Tuesday. It meant that some of the Warriors, like midfielder Neveal Hackshaw and central defender Martieon Watson, had four days rest while the Haitian players had just one.

Velfert moaned too that he was without four players who were either suspended or injured.

He got no mercy from the Warriors, though.

“Haiti’s strength is their two central midfielders,” Trinidad and Tobago coach Derek King, “so we tried to close them down as soon as (possible) and get behind them.

“When we analysed (Haiti), no one really pressured their back four and squeezed them (in any of their group matches).”

Trinidad and Tobago meant business.

“This was the game of the tournament,” said Trinidad and Tobago captain Shannon Gomez. “In all the other games we didn’t settle as fast and we conceded some soft goals. We were warned about that…

“If we went behind against Haiti, they are set up to counter…”

The Haitians never got a chance to display their counter-attacking capabilities. After 34 minutes, the Warriors were ahead.

Levi Garcia, the highly touted 16-year-old Shiva Boys HC student, won a half yard of space down the left flank to swing in a low cross and Corbin diverted the ball clinically into the near corner.

It was a rare sight at goal for either team and Garcia did not have the same joy against Haiti that he did in the earlier rounds. But it was enough to send the Warriors into the break ahead.

Velfert tweaked his formation after the interval as Haiti sacrificed a defender for an additional midfielder in a 4-3-3 set-up. The visitors’ best passage of play came after that and they even had a stifled penalty appeal when Trinidad and Tobago defender Jesus Perez dragged Desire Jonel to the ground in the 71st minute.

Cuban referee Yadel Martinez was unconvinced, though, and the Warriors made the most of the reprieve.

In the 81st minute, Corbin doubled Trinidad and Tobago’s advantage in some style after some more clever wing play. On this occasion, substitute Kishun Seecharan provided the delivery and Corbin dragged the ball past Haiti custodian Steve Sanon before tapping home his second.

Four minutes later, Garcia and Corbin combined to telling effect again as the Rangers attacker converted his hattrick from another raking left side cross.

Garcia had been the talk of the tournament. But Corbin’s final showing saw him walk off with the MVP and Most Goals trophies.

King, who is also a senior team assistant coach, revealed that the 18-year-old Corbin might make his debut with the senior Warriors in next month’s Caribbean Cup qualifying rounds.

“Corbin is a special player,” said King. “He is really a number 10 but we used him as a number nine. We are looking to bring him up to the senior team.”

Tonight, the young men were happy to just soak up their Under-20 triumph in front of an appreciative audience.

The eloquent Gomez, who just quit Form Six at St Augustine Secondary to turn professional with W Connection, thanked everyone from the Alicia’s Palace Hotel staff to the cleaners and security at the stadium.

“The rhythm section was really good tonight,” said Gomez. “I wanted to dance on the field… Everything was spot on… Once we get that support, I guarantee you that we can qualify for the Under-20 World Cup.”

The national under-20 team has just over three months to prepare for the likes of Mexico and the United States in the CONCACAF competition. The giant trophy that Gomez brought to the post-game press conference suggests the team is worth the gamble from corporate and public Trinidad and Tobago.

Corbin comes a long way.
By Felix Paul (Guardian).

Since his mother died while he was just a toddler, his aunt Michelle “Trudy” Corbin brought him up as her own.

He was always involved in sports and Trudy egged him on all the way. As a 16-year-old, nobody really knew about Kadeem Corbin on a national, regional or international level.

But there are people who, as guardians, invest in their charges with all they have. Trudy is one.

As the referee blew the final whistle at the Hasely Crawford stadium in Port-of-Spain two Friday nights ago, it was recognised by all that this 18-year-old was a football star in the making: scoring a hat trick against a formidable Haiti eleven, and earning himself most outstanding player, most goals by netting five in the entire tournament and bringing home the title Caribbean Football Union Under-20 champions.

This result will also see T&T going to Jamaica in January 2015 for the Concacaf Under-20 World Cup qualification tournament on a high.

An elated Trudy, who is the political adviser to Diego Martin Regional Corporation Chairman, Darryl Smith, boasted to me that she always knew Kadeem would have proven himself if he got the right opportunity.

And this is what she saw happening with him since he had been selected on the Under-20 national team.

This new-look Trinidad and Tobago Football Association executive is showing that their experience is a paradigm for young footballers like Kadeem, and they have put in place an ingenious concept simply titled “TTFA Proposal”.

I cannot get into all the details concerning what this is all about in this article as a matter of space, but my inside knowledge shows this to be pro-team.

Two years ago the Trinidad and Tobago Football Association was shut down by a group of players from the 2006 World Cup team. Led by Brent Sancho, they raided the TTFA’s office and seized as much as they could, blaming Jack Warner for withholding their entitled dues.

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar listened to the Trinidad and Tobago Football Association, who made their own contribution of $1.7 million and paid the disgruntled former soca warriors the remaining $1.3 million of a $3 million settlement, which was one of the first initiatives launched by TTFA president Raymond Tim Kee.

There was no hosting of tournaments in Trinidad and Tobago. Fifa had threatened to withhold all funding following Haiti’s claim that they did not get their “earthquake money”, while Warner attempted to cite the matter as contratemps.

ZNo development plan could have been had by the media. The Ministry of Sports stopped funding under the Honourable Anil Roberts. Then there was the 2011 bribery scandal with Bin Ahmin. Football in T&T was dead.

Early last month Trinidad and Tobago won the Women’s Caribbean Cup in fine style. The Women Soca Warriors compiled 22 goals to share between their Caribbean counterparts without getting any.

Now the Men’s Under 20s, in copping the CFU’s title, will be giving up some of their players to the senior squad for the October 8, CFU Caribbean Cup second round at the Alto Boldon stadium.

Today, Fifa issued a bonus funding of US$ 250,000 under the new executive, US $500,000 for licensing and merchandising, and US$ 1.5 million for the TTFA’s “Goal Project”. Next week I shall unravel the latter. For the time being I am just going beyond the ball.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Felix Paul, perhaps should research his subject matter better.

From what I am hearing, Corbin "this 18-year-old was a football star in the making" has not attended training with St Ann's Rangers since the U20 camp broke and has an agent who will be taking him overseas.

While I believe it is essential for our talented teenagers to further develop their talents on foreign shores, those destinations should be carefully chosen. For example, a player such as Cornell Glen has peaked in his ability. He plays very well in a certain style that he has perfected to his best ability. However, had he gone to India at 18, he may never have developed as well as he has. Kenwyne Jones left these shores as a defensive midfielder. While he may still have been a national first team regular in that role, it was the experienced Southampton coaches that recognised and developed his talent as a striker.

These young boys have to be nurtured by professional coaches who know what they are doing. I am concerned that some of them may be placed with clubs purely because they pay more money than the next club.

Is it better for a developing teenager to earn US$2,000 p.m. at a mid table club in Finland or US$1,500 as a reserve player at Wolverhampton Wanderers?

Sorry, I can, perhaps, excuse the propaganda from Felix Paul, but this?????

"Then there was the 2011 bribery scandal with Bin Ahmin."  :rotfl:

Shameful that a national newspaper can afford neither a proof reader or a sports editor!

Corbin eyes Gold Cup debut.
By Shaun Fuentes (Guardian).

Young T&T forward Kadeem Corbin has a strong likelihood of making his senior international competitive debut at the CONCACAF Gold Cup, which began on Tuesday night.

Corbin of T&T Pro League club St Ann’s Rangers has been impressive in the build up to today’s Gold Cup opener against Guatemala and head coach Stephen Hart has already made his impressions of the player known, describing him as dynamic and with a lot of potential.

Corbin, who is 19, says he intends to keep grounded throughout this busy period and perhaps for the rest of his career.

“It’s good to be in the national team at my age. It’s a dream really I got into the team for my first game against Curacao and it was a good experience. Now being at the Gold Cup is the biggest stage for me so far,” he said.

“But I plan to keep working hard and keeping focused. A lot of things can happen when you are a footballer making progress. God is very important to me. God relaxes me. My family members have been my biggest supporters and I want to make them proud. But doing anything that can help my country will be a blessing for me,” said the T&T Under-20 forward who scored a hat-trick to lead T&T to victory in the final of the Caribbean U-20 Men’s Championship in 2014 at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.

“My favourite player is Mario Balotelli and my favourite team is Barcelona. I try to take pattern from them. I don’t know what the future will bring but I know I want to play at a high level and maybe in two years I can be playing in Europe.”

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Kadeem Corbin returns to Rangers.
By Ian Prescott (T&T Express).

STRIKER Kadeem Corbin has returned to former club Terminix La Horquetta Rangers from Central FC.

The former national youth striker was in 2022 named Player of the Tournament when scoring 11 goals and leading Rangers to the Ascension Invitational football title.

Rangers have been the most active team in the Trinidad and Tobago Premier Football League (TTPFL) transfer window, and have recruited the trio of 26-year-old Corbin, defender Daniel Cyrus and Jaheem Williams, all from Central FC, along with veteran midfielder Nathaniel “Spanish” Garcia from struggling Point Fortin Civic. Boosted by their new recruits, unbeaten and currently third-placed Rangers are back in action tomorrow when taking on TTPFL leaders AC Port of Spain at Larry Gomes stadium from 4 p.m.

The transfer window has also seen Stefan Berkely going the other way, from Rangers to Central FC , while Civic have recruited Indian-based veteran striker Marcus Joseph and 28-year-old defender Justin Cornwall.

Unattached T&T national team defender Alvin Jones has already joined Tiger Tanks Club Sando having last played for Madison FC in the United States. Josiah Joseph moves to Prison FC from Trendsetter Hawks and Panamanian footballer Jairo Lombado has joined Cunupia FC, having previous played with clubs in his native Panama, Trinidad and Tobago with San Juan Jabloteh, Barbados and Antigua & Barbuda.

The TTPFL transfer window ends on May 10.
