Champions League Twenty20, 6th Match, Qualifying Group: Mumbai Indians v Northern Districts at Raipur, Sep 16, 2014

7.30pm Toss time. It's heads, and Northern Knights have chosen to bowl. Both teams are unchanged.

8.00pm Here we go then. It's Hussey and Simmons to open for Mumbai, and Trent Boult has the new ball, with two slips in position. As the players make their way out, a final look at the scenarios (scenarii?), completely up-to-date.

Navdeep Kumar P: "Those Extra $150,000 were spent to stop Anderson from scoring against Mumbai in this all important decider match."

Vinay: "Got to shake my head at Mumbai Indians not picking Corey Anderson: the man who a) is ridiculously destructive, b) knows the Knights better than anyone else in the team, c) cost them an extra $150,000 and d) is the reason they (rather than Rajasthan) are even here in the first place! "

8.00pm Here we go then. It's Hussey and Simmons to open for Mumbai, and Trent Boult has the new ball, with two slips in position.

3.1
Southee to Hussey, OUT, down the pitch, and he gets no elevation on that attempted big hit down the ground, and mid-on has to dive forward and to his right to catch that. Well taken!
MEK Hussey c Kuggeleijn b Southee 7 (12b 1x4 0x6) SR: 58.33

End of over 5 (15 runs) Mumbai Indians 26/1 (RR: 5.20)

Jalaj S Saxena10 (7b 1x6)
LMP Simmons8 (11b 1x4)

SC Kuggeleijn1-0-15-0
TG Southee2-0-2-1

5.3
Styris to Jalaj S Saxena, OUT, fantastic low catch from Williamson at short cover. That was full, and Saxena drove that hard, almost parallel to the ground barely a foot above the turf, and Williamson stayed low and threw himself forward and to his left to take that inches above the ground. They look at a couple of replays, and his hands are well underneath the ball
Jalaj S Saxena c Williamson b Styris 10 (8b 0x4 1x6) SR: 125.00

7.3
Styris to Simmons, OUT, you miss, Styris hits, in the grand tradition of Kiwi dibbly-dobblers. Simmons made room to slap that through the off side, and the ball sneaked below his bat and crashed into off and middle
LMP Simmons b Styris 13 (17b 2x4 0x6) SR: 76.47

End of over 8 (6 runs) Mumbai Indians 39/3 (RR: 4.87)

AP Tare5 (3b 1x4)
AT Rayudu3 (8b)

SB Styris2-0-12-2
IS Sodhi1-0-1-0

9.4
Styris to Tare, OUT, what a catch! I don't think Watling knew too much about that as Tare made room for the late cut. The ball, angling in towards middle stump, bounced on him and took his top-edge, and the keeper somehow got his gloves in the way and clung on to the ball
AP Tare c †Watling b Styris 7 (10b 1x4 0x6) SR: 70.00

End of over 10 (2 runs) Mumbai Indians 45/4 (RR: 4.50)

KA Pollard1 (2b)
AT Rayudu6 (11b)

SB Styris3-0-14-3
IS Sodhi2-0-5-0

10.5
Boult to Rayudu, OUT, follows it with the bouncer, and Rayudu's feet are stuck in cement. He leans back, trying to ramp that over the keeper, and only manages to glove it through to the keeper
AT Rayudu c †Watling b Boult 6 (14b 0x4 0x6) SR: 42.85

End of over 11 (1 run) Mumbai Indians 46/5 (RR: 4.18)

Harbhajan Singh0 (1b)
KA Pollard2 (4b)

TA Boult3-0-10-1
SB Styris3-0-14-3

15.3
Kuggeleijn to Harbhajan Singh, OUT, full outside off, and Devcich takes a well-judged catch on the long-off boundary, reaching over his head and looking back to ensure his foot is inside the rope, after Harbhajan launched it down the ground
Harbhajan Singh c Devcich b Kuggeleijn 10 (14b 0x4 1x6) SR: 71.42

End of over 16 (9 runs) Mumbai Indians 83/6 (RR: 5.18)

KA Pollard28 (21b 2x4 1x6)
S Gopal0 (0b)

SC Kuggeleijn3-0-24-1
IS Sodhi4-0-25-0

16.6
Southee to Pollard, OUT, taken! It's short again, and Harris dives to his left at deep square leg to catch Pollard's uppish pull
KA Pollard c Harris b Southee 31 (24b 2x4 1x6) SR: 129.16

End of over 17 (6 runs) Mumbai Indians 89/7 (RR: 5.23)

S Gopal2 (3b)
TG Southee3-0-8-2

SC Kuggeleijn3-0-24-1

End of over 18 (11 runs) Mumbai Indians 100/7 (RR: 5.55)

SL Malinga9 (4b 2x4)
S Gopal4 (5b)

TA Boult4-0-21-1
TG Southee3-0-8-2

19.1
Southee to Malinga, OUT, shuffles across his stumps, goes too far across, and he bowls it full and bowls Malinga behind his legs as he misses the flick
SL Malinga b Southee 20 (8b 3x4 1x6) SR: 250.00

19.6
Southee to Gopal, 1 run, OUT, full now, on middle and leg, and he clips it off his toes towards deep midwicket and turns back for the second. Throw beats Shreyas to the keeper's end, where Watling collected the ball in front of the crease and underarmed it into the stumps on the dive
S Gopal run out 24 (12b 2x4 1x6) SR: 200.00

End of over 20 (16 runs) Mumbai Indians 132/9

PP Ojha1 (1b)
TG Southee4-0-24-3
SC Kuggeleijn4-0-40-1

9.35pm Not the biggest total, 132, but they've recovered from 46 for 5 thanks to Pollard and lower-order contributions from Shreyas Gopal and Lasith Malinga. Mumbai need to win to qualify. Knights are through unless they are bowled out for 49 or less, in which case Lions will go through in their place.

9.45pm Mumbai's players run onto the field after breaking out of their huddle. What do they say anyway that hasn't been said in the dressing room? It won't be the question on top of the minds of Kane Williamson and Anton Devcich, of course. It's Devcich to face Malinga.

14.3
Bumrah to Watling, OUT, taken! Harbhajan leaps to his right to pluck a one-handed catch after Watling flicks this full ball uppishly
BJ Watling c Harbhajan Singh b Bumrah 0 (4b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

End of over 15 (2 runs) Northern Districts 114/3 (19 runs required from 30 balls, RR: 7.60, RRR: 3.80)

DR Flynn13 (14b 2x4)

JJ Bumrah4-0-26-2
Jalaj S Saxena2-0-21-0

15.6
Ojha to Flynn, OUT, oh my. That wasn't short enough to pull, and he's deposited that straight into the hands of Harbhajan at short midwicket
DR Flynn c Harbhajan Singh b Ojha 13 (16b 2x4 0x6) SR: 81.25

End of over 16 (1 run) Northern Districts 115/4 (18 runs required from 24 balls, RR: 7.18, RRR: 4.50)

PP Ojha3-0-20-1

DJ Mitchell16 (13b 2x4 1x6)
SB Styris0 (0b)

SL Malinga4-0-31-0
PP Ojha3-0-20-1

Three to win, and Ojha will continue

17.1
Ojha to Styris, no run, tossed up on middle stump, and he defends with soft hands, with the turn, towards cover point
17.2
Ojha to Styris, 3 runs, and that is that. It was full and wide, and he scoops it over cover, and the batsmen run three as it dribbles towards the boundary with the cover fielder giving chase

Mumbai Indians 132/9 (20/20 ov)
Northern Districts 133/4 (17.2/20 ov)

Northern Districts won by 6 wickets (with 16 balls remaining)

11.20pm Presentation time. Daniel Flynn: Exceptional performance with the ball, with Tim and Trent setting the tone, and the openers set up the chase. [Main draw] should be fantastic. The boys have really enjoyed the atmosphere."

Scott Styris is the man of the match. "We've been trying to get into this tournament for 4-5 years. Now we have some very good young players. Kane Williamson is a quality player, and the two quicks are world-class."

11.15pm Mumbai lost too many wickets, and asked too much of their lower order, says Kieron Pollard. "Most teams, when they come to India they want to beat Mumbai Indians so they bring their A game. [Knights] fielded well, we could have had 150-160. They could have relaxed but they didn't, that's their professionalism."

Kane Williamson: "We started off the competition a bit shaky [with our fielding], but we know we are a good fielding outfit and it was great to put up a good display in the last two games. It's great to go into the main draw and hope to keep the confidence going."

Pollard’s Mumbai Indians eliminated

Captain Kieron Pollard started a fight back that stalled as defending champions Mumbai Indians crashed out of the Champions League Twenty 20 here, yesterday. Lendl Simmons was dismissed cheaply as Mumbai suffered a six wicket defeat to a motivated Northern Knights in the final qualifying round match to be eliminated from the tournament.

Northern knights coasted comfortably to 133 for four in 17.2 over’s after restricting Mumbai to 132 for nine in 20 overs. Pollard and Harbhajan Singh stalled the fall of wickets for nearly five overs as the champions struggled.

Pollard scored 31 off 24 balls while Simmons, who hit two fours in scoring 13 runs from 17 balls, missed completely and lost his off stump. The win was Northern Knights’ third qualification game victory in a row while it was Mumbai’s second loss in three matches.
‘Yeah, it is disappointing. In two games, we had an opportunity to post good totals, but we lost regular wickets. I can’t really put a finger on it. But, we did not apply ourselves,” said Pollard. “The experienced guys did not step up. We will have to take some positives. We made a match out of it. There will always be pressure on Mumbai. It is a difficult pill to slow. But, we have to move on”.

Northern Knights join Barbados Tridents, Cape Cobras Hobart Hurricanes and Kings XI Punjab in Group B while Lahore Lions join Chennai Super Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders, Dolphins and Perth Scorchers in Group A.
