New Caribbean champions T&T want financial support.
By Ian Prescott (Express).

Help us, please

They have reached the final leg of an historic first World Cup qualification, and the Trinidad and Tobago’s senior women’s footballers are begging for financial assistance.

In six weeks’ time, they play the final round of qualifying for next year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada. Football pundits are confident this campaign represents T&T’s best chance to qualify for the first time for the World Cup. Yet, no good corporate citizen has as yet stepped forward to assist the team.

Needs range from a six-week training camp, to warm-up matches, to proper nutrition and water.

“Sometimes it’s not even financial (help needed). It’s Nestle (for instance) giving us some protein drinks after training sessions. Water, Gatorade, those things,” said the captain Maylee Attin-Johnson.

“They have to be blind to not see that we are moving to qualify. I hope they help us. I hope they hear us now,” Atttin-Johnson added. “With or without the support, we are going to qualify."

The Soca Princesses captain hopes that beating Jamaica 1-0 and winning the first-ever Women’s Caribbean Cup two nights ago — a historic event in its own right- stirs the passions of the local business community.

So far, some help has come from abroad. The kit the women wear is sponsored by JOMA, a Spanish clothing manufacturer, while even the head coach, American Randy Waldrum, has made an investment in the Soca Princesses.

A highly-rated coach with 279 wins and two national titles with US school Notre Dame at college level, Waldrum should be on vacation now, having just last week ended a tough season as head coach of the Houston Dash, a professional women’s club playing at the highest level in the United States. Instead, he coached T&T free of charge.

“Eight teams and three-and-a-half (qualifying) spots. I think this is the best opportunity in the next ten years (for Trinidad and Tobago) to qualify,” stated Waldrum, who as recent as 2013 , coached the United States women’s Under-23 team.

“I can’t think of a more deserving group than this group. They are talented, passionate and committed,” Waldrum added. “Many of them spent ten, 12 years of their lives to have this one dream come through and I want to be a small part of it.”

Waldrum further echoed the need for help before the final qualifiers.

“We desperately need the six weeks to be together as much as we can. That is why the local community who supported us so great tonight can help us. We need help funding it and we need all the help we can to generate the resources we need to go six weeks, Waldrum said.

”I appreciate the fans’ support tonight. I have so many nice comments from the fans congratulating us on the job we’ve done. Everybody’s happy with what they have seen.”

‘Princesses’ crowned Caribbean ‘Queens’
By Ian Prescott (Express).

The Reggae Girlz probably felt set upon by a bunch of football bullies, when losing the first edition of the Women’s Caribbean Cup 1-0 to Trinidad and Tobago’s Soca Princesses, the senior women’s national football team, at the Hasely Crawford on Tuesday night.

T&T won all four matches played, scoring 21 times while not conceding a single goal, on the way to being crowned first-ever Caribbean champions in women’s football. Not that it was one-sided in any way. It was a worthy final, nail-biting and hard-fought.

After being outplayed for much of the first half, Jamaica fought back, especially late, when they were firing on all cylinders. They would have done anything to get one of the 17 goals scored against their opponents in the group phase.

But, the closest they got was when Arin King’s defensive header bounced off Jamaican striker Shakira Duncan and struck the T&T crossbar. Jamaica only really got this close again when Kenesha Reid’s low shot just beat the far post in the dying stages of the match.

The tournament’s ‘Most Valuable Player’ US-based T&T college player Mariah Shade, got the lone goal, her sixth of the tournament. And it was an early one too, scored in just the eighth minute, when Shade put a well-placed finish onto an over-the-top pass from Tasha St Louis, whose seven goals earned her the finals’ ‘Golden Boot’ award.

In fact, the hosts swept all the awards, including ‘Best Goalkeeper’—though Tobago-born Kamika Forbes owed much to her central defenders Arin King, Rhea Belgrave and the injured Ayanna Russell, giving her virtually nothing to do throughout the tournament. Forbes clearly did not make as much saves in the tournament than St Kitts-Nevis custodian Tynetta McCoy, who despite conceding ten against T&T saved her teammates as many times.

King especially, was a rock throughout the tournament. The Canada-born T&T defender, calm and assured, the perfect defender a goalie would want holding the line. On at least three occasions, King was the only obstacle between Jamaica star Duncan and a goal. Once, pacey Duncan got ahead onto an overhead pass.

Caught on the wrong side, King switched just in time to put in a decisive tackle, just as the Jamaican looked for her 15th goal (entire tournament). Later King, lunged in, but got such good position on Duncan, it gave the no-nonsense Cuban referee Irazema Aguilera no choice, but to dismiss the Jamaican appeals for a penalty. Someone mentioned “Trinidad’s Franco Berrazi, comparing King to the legendary Italian and AC Milan defender.

T&T played sweet football, almost ticky-tacky like the Spanish, and controlling the first half hour. After trying to ambush the Soca Princesses in the opening seconds, Jamaican were forced to retreat and defend until the storm passed.

They conceded a goal, but Jamaica defended well, shutting out the dangerous Kennya Cordner out of the match. Under similar pressure, deep-lying T&T playmaker Karen Forbes neither defended nor attacked well. But, as Jamaica emerged an attacking force in the second half, T&T fought wholeheartedly, until Shade dropped to the floor exhausted.

“I’m proud of Caribbean women(s) football. It was a great final,” stated Merron Gordon, Jamaica’s head-coach. “Both Trinidad and Jamaica are where they should be now. Hopefully, at least one of us will be in the World Cup.”

Likewise, T&T’s American head-coach Randy Waldrum thought it was a competitive final. “I think we played a great side in Jamaica. I think we saw a bit tonight; the fact that they had been together most of the summer in Miami,” Waldrum said.

“It wasn’t our best performance, but we needed a game like this where we were going to get stretched, so we could find out the area we needed to work on. But having said that, we are proud of the effort of the girls to have scored 21 goals and not given anything up.”

TTFA needs $4m
...seeking funds to get women’s team to W/Cup
By Ian Prescott (Express).

THE Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) will petition Government and the business sector for between two to four million dollars in funding for the World Cup preparation effort of the Trinidad and Tobago women’s national team.

American Randy Waldrum, Trinidad and Tobago’s national women’s coach has discussed with the TTFA having training camps here and abroad, and a couple of high calibre international friendly matches as well.

All this, prior to the new Caribbean champions participating in the CONCACAF Women’s Championship, the final leg of World Cup qualifying which begins in six weeks in the United States. Also proposed is that the team arrives in the United States at least a week before the competition which runs from October 16-25 in the United States.

Newly-installed Minister of Sport, Dr Rupert Griffith and members of the local business community were among the TTFA’s guests at the inaugural Women’s Caribbean Cup which Trinidad and Tobago won when beating Jamaica 1-0 in the final on Tuesday night at the Hasely Crawford Stadium. The TTFA has petitioned some of those persons for financial assistance.

“We are also looking to have the team in the United States seven to 10 days before the tournament depending on the cities where we are drawn,” TTFA general secretary Sheldon Phillips told the Express. “The draw takes place on September 5 in Miami, and that will also determine the teams we play in warm-up matches.”

Phillips added: “Between Government and the private sector, we hope to raise the money needed to ensure proper preparation of the women’s national team.

We are having some discussions which are ongoing. At the final, there were a lot of good impressions about the quality of play produced by the team on the field, and the overall production of the Women’s Caribbean Cup.”

Phillips also revealed that the TTFA had a meeting with Griffith immediately upon his recent appointment, with a view to continuing of the Association’s programme with the involvement of the Ministry of Sport. He said that five national teams are currently active and in need of funding, including the national Under-20 and senior teams which host Caribbean Football Union qualifying tournaments in September and October respectively.

“When the new TTFA executive came into power, we inherited millions of dollars in debt,” Phillips declared. “Yet, we are still able to have five national teams functioning. We have been able to restart the development programmes and the Association has been functioning despite its challenges.”

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Careful what you ask for. Remember what happened the last time Gov't was pressured into helping the football federation. 10's of millions of taxpayers money disappeared into someone's pockets and gov't was unable to force an investigation into the matter because of FIFA's laws on gov't interference in the affairs of the local federation.

.. and that's why I would rather a private business entity help our women instead of the Govt. TTFF has to do the job of engaging and encouraging private businesses

The TTFA has been doing a very good job with the little funds they have and have proven they need some assistant.

I hope they get some support.

My only advise, they need to hire a marketing director and get more ambitious.

El Presidente gave his word.

Tim Kee vowed to give the team all available resources to prepare for the CONCACAF final round of World Cup qualifiers scheduled for the US in October. “Now in the remaining six weeks or so, before the final round in the US, and with the limited resources available to us, we will do whatever is possible to have the team engage in the best preparations for the final round in the US,” Tim Kee said.

T&T Express Reports.

Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) president Raymond Tim Kee has praised the recent performances of the national senior women’s team and also pledged to do all possible to assist them to become the first from this country to qualify for a FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Port of Spain Mayor Tim Kee saluted the team on its triumph at the just concluded Women’s Caribbean Cup, which ended with the hosts securing a one-nil victory over Jamaica in the final on Tuesday at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.

Tim Kee witnessed the match in the presence of Minister of Sport Rupert Griffith, president of the Caribbean Football Union Gordon Derrick, CFU general secretary Damien Hughes, Sonia Bien-Aime, the first woman to be appointed to the CONCACAF Executive Committee, and Jamaica football president captain Horace Burrell.

“It was such a splendid display of pride, honour and true representation by our National Women’s Team during the one-week tournament here in our country,” Tim Kee stated. “What we saw from the team coached by Randy Waldrum and captained by Maylee Attin-Johnson was an indication of what true belief and proper execution can do in terms of achieving positive results and we saw them being able to bring a kind of joy to our fans who followed the team from the opening game against St Kitts/Nevis to the final against the never say die Jamaicans. “

The TTFA and the Caribbean Football Union also expressed gratitude to the supporters of the recent tournament. These include the Ministry of Sport, Sportt, Coca-Cola, Subway, Lifestyle Motors, Miscellaneous Marketing, the local organising committee and all volunteers, ball attendants, Matrix and Fully Loaded, Sound System, the protective services and the management and staff of the Hasely Crawford Stadium.

I know there is a shortage of some of the more obvious items such as drinks, equipment etc and these things need to be targeted, but items such as life cover, medical insurance, travel insurance and kit for the physio should be easy to provide.

Life cover for women under 30 with a healthy lifestyle is cheap as chips. One of the T&T life assurance companies could provide this for free. The press coverage they would receive would compensate for the loss of premiums. In fact, it would cost much more to place a life assurance ad in each newspaper, advertise on local T.V. and purchase a pitch side ad board than they would lose in annual premiums from 25 young women.

Medical insurance would cost less than $20k for the whole squad.

The problem as it perceive it, is that while Sheldon is working on attracting the big bucks, there is nobody chasing the minor sponsorships. This is understandable as
 a) as General Secretary, Sheldon doesn't have the time to put together a package for the minor sponsorships (designing, producing and presenting a $20k proposal takes pretty much the same time as a $2m proposal) and
b) There is no money to hire a full time marketing guy who would be able to generate income (which ironically, would provide a salary for the marketing guy!)
c) You cannot risk damaging your brand by sending out an inexperienced marketing person

Ideally, someone would volunteer to fill this role on a commission only basis to start. But, even then you would have problems.
e.g. The marketeer goes to (say) Superpharm, who agree to supply all medical equipment up to $10k per month in value. Great. But how does the marketeer get his commission? He doesn't want to be paid in band aids.

So, here's my suggestion: While in negotiation with Ministry of Sport, explain that if TTFA could hire a Marketing Manager at (say) TT$10k per month,(funded by MoS for 6 months) they could reduce the burden on MoS in the future. It would actually be an investment for MoS. The marketeer would be targeted to achieve a minimum income of TT$30k per month and after that, would receive a commission including $ value of product.

Petrotrin, MYCard Sport partner with TTFA
By Ian Prescott (Express).

PLEDGE TO ‘PRINCESSES’

A $3million medical care plan, which covers players and staff of ten Trinidad and Tobago national football teams, and training facilities for the senior women’s national team in the build-up to their World Cup qualification campaign, are among the sponsorship deals announced yesterday by the Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA).

And after boasting the TTFA are hosting tournaments, and that national teams are beating whoever they meet, TTFA president and Port of Spain mayor Raymond Tim Kee is urging other corporate citizens to partner with the TTFA in support of football.

“I sincerely hope that other corporate citizens who are looking and who read the newspapers, would wish to join this organisation (TTFA) as a demonstration of future interest in football,” Tim Kee declared.

It was announced that T&T’s women’s team, the Soca Princesses, had on Thursday entered a live-in camp at the beach facility of oil company Petrotrin, for two weeks intensive training in preparation for World Cup qualifying.

“An Arrangement is provided for access to the facility, room, board, transportation to the facility is provided as well to and from the facility to Petrotrin Velodrome,” TTFA general secretary Sheldon Phillip disclosed. “Access to the club, the pool, the gym certainly, so it really is an all-inclusive enviroment that is conducive to the teams preparation for CONCACAF qualification.”

The Soca Princesses are believed to have their best ever chance to qualify for a FIFA Women’s World Cup at the 2014 CONCACAF Women’s Championships, which will automatically qualify three teams for the 2015 Women’s World Cup, while a fourth team also have a qualifying chance via a playoff.

The ‘Princesses’ will remain at Petrotrin’s facilities until October 4, after which they travel to the US, seven days prior to meeting two-time world champions, the USA, in the opening match of a World Cup qualifying series.

Plans are to possibly play a couple of warm-up matches before the tournament. “The plan is to take the team up to the US, very close to Kansas City, which will be their first venue for the tournament. And we are looking to have them in the US about seven days before the first match.”

However, yesterday’s major announcement by the TTFA was medical care for the Soca Princesses and all national footballers and staff under a MYCard Sport medical programme, specially designed for the TTFA by Medical Lab Group.

“MYCard Sport will invest $3 million over the next four years into the TTFA to ensure that all players, including the Soca Warriors and Soca Princesses, are at peak performance and health, while representing the red, white and black,”stated Lab Medical Group CEO Richard Ramrekha.

“It is designed to take care of the health of the (TTFA) footballers. All ten (national) teams will have this service free of charge. It is a card which will provide continuous medical care for the footballer through his life as a footballer,” Ramrekha added.

“We will essentially offer to all the footballers the free national screening programme. “It’s the cardio, the metabolic profiles, kidney function, lung function, ECG and all that,’’ Ramrekha explained.

MYCard Sport is also open to members of the public at a $299 yearly subscription. which covers medical and discount coverage at HealthNet Caribbean Clinics. It is available for purchase at all Lab Medical labs, Healthnet clinics, TT Post Shops and www.mycard.tt.

“In addition, all MYCard Sport TTFA cards sold will provide a $20 cash-back to the TTFA for youth and players development,” added Ramrekha.

TTFA General Secretary Sheldon Phillips also announced today at the Petrotrin has come forward to support the Women’s National Senior Team by offering to host the the team in a live-in training camp which commenced on Thursday at its camp facilities in Palo Seco where head coach Randy Waldrum and his squad is now based.

“We are fully appreciative of the support given to the TTFA and our National Women’s Team by Petrotrin and this will go a long way in getting coach Waldrum and his team ready for the final phase of qualification. We’re looking to get the team over to the USA at least a week before its opening game against the United States also,” Phillips stated.

All good developments but I would still like to see the team play games against quality opposition to help prepare them for the final round.
