Bovell heads T&T squad to CAC Games
Story Created: Nov 12, 2014 at 11:15 PM ECT (T&T Express)TRINIDAD and Tobago Olympic Committee (TTOC) is hopeful that its 197-member contingent for the November 14-30 Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games in Veracruz, Mexico, can surpass the 34-medal haul achieved in Puerto Rico four years ago.
At that edition, Olympians George Bovell, Cleopatra Borel and Roger Daniel all won gold medals and with them spearheading the team, the TTOC is very optimistic that T&T can record their best showing ever at the CAC Games.
Bovell will be seeking to register a hattrick of 50-metre freestyle swimming titles having also copped gold in Cartagena, Colombia in 2006 while Borel will be looking to retain her crown by improving on her 19.76m effort four years ago.
And Daniel, who emerged king among the shooters in the 25m standard pistol after bagging silver in 2006, will be looking to maintain his level of consistency as he also seeks out another title.
Triple jumper Ayanna Alexander, who claimed bronze four years ago with a best effort of 13.64m, is another likely to be in the medal hunt though this time around she would probably be looking to earn one of a different colour.
Decorated table tennis player Dexter St Louis is also another with CAC Games experience under his belt, having captured men’s singles silver and bronze in the mixed doubles with Rheann Chung in 2006. He leads a team with a wealth of experience.
And T&T female Soca Warriors, winners of the 2014 Women’s Caribbean Cup, will also be flying the red, black and white in Mexico.
TTOC president Brian Lewis said the team is a well-balanced one, blended with youth and experience, with some 97 female athletes set to see action.
He said for logistical reasons the entire team did not travel together as some members departed on Tuesday, some yesterday with the last set due to leave on the November 24.
The team will be led by TTOC’s secretary Annette Knott, who will serve as the Chef de Mission.
