Warriors tackle Curacao
...in opening Caribbean Cup fixture
By Ian Prescott (T&T Express)
Story Created: Oct 26, 2014 at 11:04 PM ECT

The two finalists of the men’s Caribbean Cup Football Championship two years ago have been grouped together for the 2014 final tournament, which takes place from November 10-17 in Montego Bay, Jamaica. Trinidad and Tobago, the Caribbean’s number one ranked football team, at #49 in the world, will open its 2014 Men’s Caribbean Cup against Curacao.

The Caribbean’s top football competition will be contested among eight finalists: hosts Jamaica, defending champions Cuba, and six qualifiers. And for the first time the competition will be staged within a FIFA international match window, thus giving all eight teams access to their foreign-based professionals.

T&T’s Soca Warriors are drawn with defending champions Cuba in Group A, along with Curacao and French Guiana. Group B is a virtual group of death featuring Jamaica, 2012 semi-finalist Haiti, Martinique, as well as a strong Antigua and Barbuda. Both Caribbean group winners will contest the 2014 final, while runner-up from both groups will contest third spot.

T&T open its campaign on November 10 against Curacao. Two days later, they face French Guiana—who they beat 4-1 in qualifying two years ago—before facing Cuba on November 14 in a rematch of the 2012 grand finale. Defending champions Cuba won its first title two years ago, when edging eight-time champions T&T 1-0 at the Antigua Recreation Ground.

The 2014 Caribbean Cup Football Championship serves as a qualifier for two major tournaments; the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup and a special centennial edition of the Copa America. The new Caribbean Cup champions qualify directly for the 2016 COPA, to be staged in the USA, and involving the top South Americans teams Brazil, Argentina, Colombia against CONCACAF teams Mexico, USA and other qualifiers.

In addition, all four 2014 Caribbean Cup semi-finalists go to the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup, again to be held in the USA. A fifth-placed Caribbean qualifier will face Honduras for another Gold Cup spot. The spot for fifth Caribbean qualifier will be won by the best of the two team finishing third at the group stage.

Trinidad & Tobago look to make a statement in Caribbean Cup opener
digicelsportsmax.com

Fueled by a desire to get back to the pinnacle of Caribbean football, Trinidad and Tobago, the dominant force in Caribbean Cup folklore, came to Jamaica with only one thought in mind - we want our trophy back.

On paper it would seem a pretty straight forward fixture to open the tournament at 5:30pm (6:30 ECT) on Tuesday.

In addition to a 98-place differential between the respective countries’ FIFA rankings, the Soca Warriors face a Curacao team that they have dominated historically.

In nine games played between the teams, T&T have won five, lost one and had three draws. The only win for the Dutch Caribbean team was close to half a century ago, coming in San Jose at the 1969 CONCACAF Championship.

The twin island republic were in impervious form in qualification for the final round, easily topping group 7, after receiving a bye to the second round.

Led by the double threat of strikers Kevin Molino and Kenwyne Jones, the Warriors racked up an impressive nine goals, while conceding one, and could have just a bit more firepower than its south Caribbean neighbours can handle.

Curacao is, however, not completely bereft of quality and has looked mainly to Holland’s top-flight league, the Eredivisie, to bolster their ranks.

After missing the previous qualifying round, FC Twente’s Cuco Martina is expected to return to take up a spot alongside the experienced Shelton Martis. Despite not finding the back of the net regularly, Curacao were a fairly organised unit over two rounds of qualifying, conceding a total of five goals.

Young midfielder Papito Merencia of ADO Den Haag, another Eredivisie club, will be looking to make his mark for the team going forward. He scored twice during the qualifiers.
