This is not good enough. We need a Center mid to boss the ball around. Maylee is a luxury on the field that we cannot afford for the next rounds.

Trinidad & Tobago tops Guatemala, nears CWC semis

Trinidad & Tobago tops Guatemala, nears CWC semis

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Kennya Cordner and Maylee Attin Johnson each scored in the second half goals to lift Trinidad & Tobago to a 2-1 win over Guatemala in the 2014 CONCACAF Women’s Championship (CWC) at Robert F. Kennedy Stadium on Monday night.

The Trinidadians (2-0-1, 6 points. +1GD) currently sit second in Group A on goal difference behind the United States (2-0-0, 6 points, +6GD), which needs only a tie against Haiti later in the evening to advance to the semifinals.  That result or an American win would also give Trinidad a place in the knockout rounds.

While the Soca Princesses had ample attacking opportunities, Guatemala held firm until the 73rd minute.  Trinidad took a 1-0 lead, when an unmarked Cordner headed home Ahkeela Mollon’s right-sided cross.

Cordner, who scored Trinidad’s winner against Haiti on Friday, was a threat throughout the game and proved pivotal in the second goal 10 minutes later.  Her weaving run through the Guatemalan defense drew contact in the box, obliging referee Lucila Venegas to point to the spot. Attin Johnson, the Trinidad captain, stepped up and slotted penalty kick into the bottom right corner.

The Guatemalans would pull a goal back – their first in 12 CWC games – in the 90th minute.  Kimberley De Leon’s free-kick was flicked in by Maria Monterroso past Trinidad goalkeeper Tenesha Palmer.

Offensively, Trinidad was frustrated for most of the match.  In the 20th minute, Cordner collected a ball in the box, but flashed her shot high.

Second-half substitute Mariah Shade shot wide from 12-yards out in the 54th minute off a pass from Dernelle Mescall.

Guatemala had a chance to take the lead late in the first half only for Palmer to come off her line and block an Ana Lucia Martinez effort in the 37th minute.

The United States booked a spot in the 2014 CONCACAF Women's Championship semifinals by winning Group A behind an emphatic 6-0 victory over Haiti on Monday night.

The result also enabled Trinidad & Tobago, a 2-1 winner over Guatemala in the first game of the doubleheader at RFK Stadium, to secure a final-four berth.  The U.S. will play the winner of Tuesday’s Group B match between Mexico and Jamaica, in Chester, Pennsylvania, on October 24.

World Cup Qualifying - Women Group 1

United States 3 3 0 0 9
Trinidad & Tobago 3 2 0 1 6
Haiti 3 1 0 2 3
Guatemala 3 0 0 3 0

One for the road: T&T dusts off setbacks; on brink of Women’s W/Cup
By Lasana Liburd (Wired868)

One more win will do the trick.
The Trinidad and Tobago national women’s senior team moved within 90 minutes of a place at the Canada 2015 Women’s World Cup tournament yesterday after another hard-fought triumph at the 2014 CONCACAF Championship.
This time, Guatemala was the victim as the “Women Soca Warriors” downed the Central American nation 2-1 at the RFK Stadium in Washington to advance to the semi-final of the confederation’s show piece tournament.
The Warriors are guaranteed two more fixtures in the CONCACAF competition. If they win just one of those matches, they will become the first Caribbean women’s team to ever qualify for a FIFA tournament.
“We know that Trinidad and Tobago needs this and we are honoured to put Trinidad and Tobago on the map in a more positive light once again,” said Trinidad and Tobago captain Maylee Attin-Johnson. “This is our first time at senior level we ever qualified to the second round of a tournament so this group is about making history and leaving a legacy.”
The Women’s Warrior captain was mostly right. In truth, Trinidad and Tobago got to the semi-finals of the inaugural Women’s CONCACAF Championship in 1991, under late coach Robbie Greenidge, and finished third. The two island republic’s only defeats of that competition came against the soon-to-be world champions, the United States, and Canada.
Attin-Johnson was five years old at the time.
The Trinidad and Tobago women were fourth again in 1993 and 1994. In contrast, it was not until 2000 that the men’s team got past the group stage in the CONCACAF tournament.
Two decades ago, then FIFA vice-president and local football special advisor Jack Warner said the women’s game represented Trinidad and Tobago’s best chance of advancing to a senior FIFA tournament and promised to develop their football. But, for the most part, it proved to be lip service and the ladies soon slipped behind the likes of Mexico and Costa Rica.

Are you aware of our strengths and weaknesses as a team and aware or our tactics to score ! Do explain why we need a boss of the ball when our strengths are down the sides n we utilize speed. Do you ever see bayern utilizing a boss of the ball no they have two defensive mids protecting their back four and a center forward that holds the ball and allow the mid to get in the game to utilize the speed of robin n ribery! Ur tactical analysis seems floored sir
